The Iron Fish

OOC: Right. This is an open roleplay. It may not seem like it, but it is. If you feel there is anyway you can progress the story, please feel free to jump in.

The Offices of The Iron Intelligence Agency (IIA)
Budo, Capital of The Iron Fish
1500 Hours

Deep under the surface of Budo, away from prying eyes, the IIA’s hard working employees sit at their desks, busying themselves with computers. What are they doing? Who knows? That’s the idea of an intelligence agency, you see.

In an office at the far end of the complex, Peter Lock is also busy. He hadn’t expected to be handed this position. In fact, he would have thought it would have gone to one of the more ruthless military types.

But he had it, and he was going to make damned sure he kept it. And that meant results. RESULTS. Renegades, rebels and rouges? Nothing but a bunch of untrained, unskilled, annoyances. But, dangerous annoyances and ones the Iron Fish could not afford to ignore.

So he had his people doing everything they could to locate the leaders. The people who make it all work. And then, when they’d done that, he’d send out a strike team and take them all out. And BAM, no more rebels.

A knock at the door. What? He’d explicitly said he was not to be interrupted. Ah, but it’s OK. It’s his chosen number two.

Charles Lock, his brother. He’d chosen him because he knew he could trust him, and Charles knew how to keep a secret.

“Charles.”

“Peter.”

“Anything interesting to report?”

“Not really…well, there was one thing that one of our operatives picked up on a wire tap.”

“Which was?”

“Well, we’re not that sure. It’s strange. As though they were talking in code. “The bird has taken flight, and will soon lay its eggs.” But we couldn’t determine where the call was coming from.”

“Maybe it was some guy who likes wildlife programs?”

“Maybe. We’ll keep looking into it.”

“Good, good.”

“Also, we’ve had the DLA calling us.”

“Saying what?”

“Why are we running operations without their involvement?”

“And I assume you told them we were operating under the jurisdiction of the Undersecretary, which means we are operating with the consent of the Emperor?”

“Yes, and they said they’d see about that. They also weren’t happy that a file flagged Priority One was being diverted through their offices to ours.”

“Why was it being diverted through their office?”

“Security, Peter. The IIA is still a secret. Only the Emperor, Undersecretary, The General and the DLA know about us. To the rest of the nation and the world we don’t exist.”

“Well let them carry on. We have nothing to worry about.”

“Except the rebels.”

“Yes. The rebels.”

“Indeed.”

“Well, go find them then.”

“I will.”

Charles doesn’t move.

“Now?”

“Yes, Charles. Now.”

MEANWHILE, AT THE IMPERIAL PALACE…

As usual Emperor Matthias is sitting in his huge throne, his every need being attended to.

All of a sudden the huge iron doors of the main hall are thrown open and in walks General Brasco, the man who runs the Iron Fish’s military and acts as “Chief of Defence.” He is flanked by two guards, both privates, and both holding large machine guns.

The Emperor looks slightly startled but regains his composure almost immediately.

“General. Well, this is a pleasant surprise. We aren’t scheduled to meet for another week and a half, you know.”

“I know, Emperor. However, I thought that given the urgency of the situation…”

“Situation? What situation? I wasn’t aware of a situation?”

“No, sir. Which is why I am here.”

“What is the problem, Brasco?”
“Sir, you appointed Michael Longhorn as head of the Department of Law and Order, is that correct?”

“Yes, that is correct.”

“Sir, you did not have him vetted?”

“The DLA vetted him. The IIA wasn’t in operation at the time.”

“Sir, the DLA missed one very important piece of information during the vetting process.”

“Which is?”

“That Longhorn has been meeting with a lieutenant in the rebel movement for the last six months. On countless occasions has been seen handing over documents. Documents that we believed may have been critical to national security.”

“Wh…what?”

“Yes sir. We have been running an operation for the past three months with the aim of somehow finding the rebel leaders via Longhorn.”

“Who gave you authorisation to run this operation? I know I didn’t.”

“Emperor, we didn’t want to run the risk of Longhorn being told via a leak that he was being watched. Of course, we never dreamed he’d be appointed head of the DLA or we would have arrested him the minute we realised what he was up to.”

“Well, where is he now?”

“That’s just it. We don’t know. We raided the DLA offices and he was gone. And an underling of his informed us that several key files were missing. One of which was on route to the IIA concerning our impending venture into space. With that kind of information possibly in the hands of rebels…”

“So find him! Get the documents back and execute him."“Of course, we are trying to…”

“DON’T TRY…JUST DO IT!!! OR YOUR OWN HEAD WILL BE PLACED NEXT TO HIS ON A SPIKE JUST OUTSIDE THIS CITY!”

“Yes, Emperor. Of course.”

“And contact the Snake Eaters, there was some information about their nation in that document. We don’t want to sour the purchase of our new ships by allowing the rebels to affect them in any way.”

And far from the Palace a large group of rebels congregate. In the bushes and shrubs they hide, waiting for the moment to strike...
