Dissenters in Urusia (OPEN)

Urusia
05-05-2005, 06:24
The Federation of Urusia is made up of several small states finally united for their mutual belief in a Judeo-Christian God. One of the more athiestic states, Klement, has always been an uneasy member of the federation.

William walked into the presidential office, and the president was busy reviewing some paper work. "Sir," he said.

"What is it, William?" the president responded, still glancing down at his paperwork.

"We have a situation in Klement. They've declared independence for an athiest government," William replied. The president immediately looked up,

"Good God..."

"That's not all sir, we've got athiests flocking away from our states and moving into Klement," Williams said. "The Christians are trying to leave Klement too, but they're beind held at the borders. We're ready to brief you further, come with me."

The president put down his paper work and the two headed into the briefing room.

President John Wade has called for military aid to reclaim Klement for the federation. The fleeing athiests are being held at Urusia's border until Christians are let out of Klement, but Klement is not cooperating.

OOC: Somebody can be Klement, but in the end they are going to lose since Urusia is much larger. If you want to aid Klement in the defense then you can do that too (in that case they could win), but no invading Urusia! ;)

The Empire of Calpe expresses its worries concerning the situation in Usuria and is ready to send military forces to help with keeping intact the integrity of the federation. If you will not be able to contain this situation on your own, we can send marines or peacekeeping forces to help. Please let us know if we can help in any way.

we will send forces.... but they would be against Urusia if they try any genocidal tactics. the intelligence we have gathered about Klement is that they are allowing those who want to leave go. also, we would be accepting any atheistic refugees from Klement, should they choose not to stay.
Urusia
06-05-2005, 04:10
Urusia has recieved conflicting reports about traffic across the borders, so until is confirmed no refugees will be let into Klement. Urusia officals also note that it would be better to hold back all traffic to prevent confusion during the reoccupation. Finally Urusia assures other nations that the only ones who will be harmed will be those who resist, and full quarter will be given to those who surrender.

Early intelligence indicates that a mixed regiment (1500 men) of the regular army has sided with Klement. In addition a large militia has been formed to aid in the resistance, and it is said to consist of at least 5,000 men.

Urusia has fielded its 1st Brigade of the 1st Corps, 1st Division (4500 men). All are equipped with standard assault rifles. Urusia asks for at least one regiment (1500 men) from each supporting nation.

as we have stated, we are more on the side of Klement, because we do not believe on cracking down on a group because of their beliefs, and we believe this little 'dispute' could be a cover for that. at this point in time, we are sending no troops.
Calpe
06-05-2005, 04:43
The Empire of Calpe will send the 23rd Mechanized Brigade to your aid. We will require a large airport at our disposal for the deployment as the brigade needs around three hundred landings of C-5 Galaxy transport planes to bring the 50 tanks, 100 IFV`s, Humvees and other vehicles plus the 2000 soldiers. The brigade will be deployed in your country in one NS week.

06-05-2005, 04:43
The nation of Big Long Now asks Urusia to put a halt to it's plans to reoccupy Klement. The conflict of religions will only result in the deaths of countless people if you should reoccupy it, they are smaller than you and pose no real threat to your society. We request that you step down from persuing this, or we will take steps to intervene on Klement's behalf.

Letharn
06-05-2005, 04:44
The nation of Letharn will deploy troops to fortify Klement against any brutal Urusian actions, IF the Klementese agree to release the Christians. Until that has happened however nothing can occur because it is not Letharn policy to support governments that repress any religious groups. Furthermore if while the Letharnians are in Klement they observe any repression, it may be grounds for withdrawal. Letharn does in any case condemn the government of Urusia for forcing its beliefs on its people.

As we understand the atheists want to declare independence from the federation, but they are not beeing opressed based on their beliefs. We do not support the separation of a state simply because some dont believe in any form that God might take. If you are expressing your opinion that any region that wants to declare independence from the mother country can simply do so, then we will take the liberty of supporting any religious groups that want to make their own country, taking a piece of your land with them.
Urusia
06-05-2005, 05:05
Freedom of religion is important in Urusia, nobody is opressed for their beliefs. The government just makes decisions based on religion. Klement signed into the federation knowing full well what they were getting into, and to break off from it without negotiations is unacceptable. Klement is rightfully part of the federation, and it will be reclaimed. If athiests want their own nation they can move south, but they will not have a nation in Urusia's territory.

Mitar International Airport has cleared half of its runways for Calpe forces. No military air bases are large enough to support the incoming forces.

Urusia reminds Big Long Now that Klement will easily be crushed, sending reinforcements to their aid will only prolong the otherwise swift war.

Urusia sends word to Letharn that Klement has yet to make any attempt to negotiate.

the question here is: are being oppressed, and if not, why are they seeking independance. from what we can tell, they wouldnt be seeking independance if they had nothing to fear. if their rights to be athieistic are being upheld, then they wouldnt be calling for independance in that region, and you wouldnt have sympathetic refugees flooding towards that region. Urusia, if you can make a peaceful resolution, with extremly little military action, we would leave you be. if you choose to fire on these people, regaurdless if striking or retaliation, you will be deemed to be invading, thus we will help defend Klement and seek others to help.

The Grand Duchy of Cielonia is regretful that Urusia and Klement have elected to boil this down to violence. We condemn the Urusian charge to war on the grounds that all men have the fundamental right to determine their own religion as opposed to having it thrust upon them by state-sponsored military action. Though we are not prepared to commit troops to this conflict, we have wired to the goverment of Klement a gift of ten million deracs in the hopes that the funds will prove useful in retaining their newfound sovereignty.

Should the Urusian's military actions prove excessively brutal the Grand Duchy may reconsider military deployment, but for now we shall refrain from committing troops.
Urusia
06-05-2005, 05:12
They are seeking independence because they do not like being run by a Christian government, but that doesn't mean they are being oppressed.

Urusia will try to minimize military action, but in the end Klement will be reclaimed. As already stated, no innocent will be fired upon, such an act has never occured in the Federation's history.

Urusia reminds the Duchy that Klement voluntarily joined the federation, they were not forced. Once they join the federation they are part of Urusia, to declare independence is treason. Also note we are not forcing anyone to become Christians, we are simply a government based on Christian principles.

A docking bay is ready on the west coast of Urusia for Royale Daito forces to land.

well, we will be accepting any Klementians that no longer wish to stay. we still find it suspicious that they are declaring independance if they don't feel like they are going to be oppressed, or have their rights infringed.

Urusia has already explained why. They do not like being governed by Christian principles, but that doesn't mean they are being opressed.

we are also a peaceful nation ourselves, and will also hold you to our your word Urusia. the excuse 'They do not like being governed by Christian principles' does not hold much water with us, in that they would have to fear some of their own rights or beliefs might be infringed by such a government, and that they would cop reprisals for standing up for those beliefs.
Urusia
06-05-2005, 05:36
Urusia assures the alliance that it is the reason. People do not like to be governed by a book that they believe to be a work of fiction.

(OOC: How would you like it if same-sex marriage, euthanasia, abortion, and much more were banned because you're government was Christian? Bush already takes a lot of heat for being slightly religious in his politics.)
Cielonia
06-05-2005, 05:38
We agree with our peer nations that 'They do not like being governed by Christians' is a flimsy excuse; for it to hold water they would not have joined the Federation of Urusia in the first place. Rhetoric is one thing, but for Klement to have joined the Federation in the first place suggests that the excuses presented by Urusia are deceptive.

We will be watching this conflict very closely.

Perhaps athiests wanted to be a majority with their own government instead of a minority under Christians.

(Example: Israel)

Klement originally joined the federation with a lower athiest population, but Klement became the prime location for athiests as time passed. If a group of people flock to a region it doesn't give them the right to make it theirs.
The Lynx Alliance

(OOC: your RL example isnt exactly a good one, because it actually supports Klement)
IC:
generally, when it comes to situaltions of independance, we have seen only 2 types when it comes to religion:
a) those who want to set up a nation under relgious beliefs
b) those who want to break away so they are not constriained or have their rights of being free thinking independant beings infringed upon.
the way we have seen this, and looking sceptically through the reports you have sent us, Urasia, unfortunatly we find this to be the latter. as for your excuse 'they flocked to the region and called it their own' that almost holds as much water as your initial excuse. it is a well know fact that like-minded peoples tend to group together, that is why our Resistancia Province is mainly wiccan (or what you would call pagan) and atheistic, our Kiaonisys province is mainly buddhists, taoists and other eastern religions (not including islam) and Frosbitaria is inhabbited by mainly Shivanites (Shiva being a living diety and unofficial ruler of Frosbitaria). if people are going to feel uncomfortable with the people that surround them, then they are going to move to a place where they do feel comfortable.
Non Aligned States

"Interesting" mused the voice as its owner skimmed through the intelligence reports. "It appears we have the makings of a civil war....and perhaps a new country. Hmmmm"

Few people would have recognized the man. While not as visible as the representative speaker of the Non Aligned States, he nevertheless was one of the few people who had a hand in leading the country.

This new development of a relatively young nation held in itself countless possibilities. One of them chiefly being what course of action they would take, and if so, how far should they involve themselves in this matter. Of course with the neutral stance NAS had towards Urusia and the newly formed Klement government, they could easily side with either parties without having to worry about bothersome things such as alliances, disrupted trade routes and other things that had a tendency to disrupt profitability and national security.

"So.....who do we choose?"

Fingers snapped, and a digit pressed on the intercom buzzer. The response of his aide was immediate.

"Sir?"

"Get me the intelligence briefings we have on the resource and economic capabilities of both Urusia and this Klement ASAP." with that said, he removed his finger from the button, killing the connection.

While waiting for the reports, he contemplated his course of action. Marching in the troops was certainly out of the question. Such and act would be in direct violation of the national charter. But who was to say that perhaps a few shipments of advanced weapons and perhaps a handful of specialists couldn't be sent?

Whoever recieved them would have a significantly improved advantage over the other. That was for certain. But how much would their gratitude be worth?

And more importantly, how much would they benefit NAS?

A decision would have to come. And soon.

OOC: Urusia, can you provide economic details on Klement? What resources they have and what not?
Big Long Now
06-05-2005, 07:00
Our diplomats have shared Klement's wishes with the government of Big Long Now, and we bring it forth to Urusia.

The nation of Klement wishes to be seen as an independent nation in the eyes of Urusia. We do not want to be looked upon as an enemy, but simply looked upon as a state that no longer felt in sync with the beliefs of the Urusian government. We hope to see a friendship form in the coming months or years, and not a bitter grudge that could tear our new nation apart. At this time, we are not ready for negotiations but wish the channel to communication be made available for when the time is proper.

Urusia, we will check back with Klement's officials in a few days and try to talk them into negotiations. We'd also like to state that their statements do not completely reflect Big Long Now's opinions in this matter.

---off-camera------

"I still think this is ill-advised, Your Grace," suggested Hiro Arai as the TV flicked off. The slim man in the dull-grey suit sat stiffly in a red leather armchair, a glass of water held in his right hand.

Across the room, Grand Duke Francis St. Marie exhaled softly, giving his head a little shake. "That's because you're a military man, General, not a politician." The older man sipped lightly from the half-full glass of Scotch he held, crossing his right leg over his left and adjusting his glasses as he peered at the general.

"By all means, enlighten me-"

"It's fairly simple. We've got an election coming up, right?"

"Right."

"And both John Trieste and Jean-Jacques Takei are running up in a Conservative primary trying to colour me as soft on defense."

"Right."

"There's your answer."

"I see. You're trying to convince the electorate-"

"-that liberals aren't soft on defense, exactly," finished the Grand Duke, again sipping from his Scotch before looking out the window at the city of Cielon beyond, at the parks stretching across the Acropolis, the towering buildings just beyond. Certainly Cielonia's navy and defense perimeter were sufficient to stave off invasion from much larger threats, but still... Francis was no warmonger, and committing troops to other nations was always something he did with great reluctance. Then again, what needed to be done needed to be done, especially with an election coming up.

"Is STAF still on standby?"

"Yes."

"Good. When the fighting breaks out in Klement we'll probably need them."

"Of course, sir." Hiro's expression remained evenly neutral.

"Good man."

IC: It is not an issue of comfort, it is an issue of policies. Adultery is illegal in Urusia, and that doesn't make many happy. Same-sex marriage is also illegal, and that doesn't make many happy either. They can't just move somewhere else in the federation because the policy is enforced federally. Klement just tries to find loopholes to ease the tension on the policies, which is why athiests flock to it.

Urusia sends its last statistics documented of Klement as well as up to date intelligence to NAS.

OOC: Basically Klement's economy compared to the rest of Urusia's sucks. Klement is only one state out of about 7 in the federation, so obviously Urusia has the upper hand.

IC: In response to the letter sent by Big Long Now and Klement, Urusia replies with the following:

The nation has been torn apart by you and you alone. You declared independence, you have brought it upon yourself. Surrender now and there will be no bloodshed. If you wish to leave Urusia then you may move south, but you will not have a nation within the Federation.

Urusia invites inspectors to come visit Urusia to corrobate the government's claim of no oppression.

OOC: There won't be any evidence of oppression, because nobody is being opressed. Also note that Klement has no formal government yet since they just declared independence, so they can hardly be regarded as a nation right now. They will still need to organize themselves before they can start sending out diplomats and what not.

we encourage negotiations and not threatening statments such as this. we would be willing to send independent inspectors in, as long as they are not impeeded by your government officials. unfortunatly, after that statement you issued, we highly doubt that it would be possible, however. also, going over the statistics, in conjunction with this notice, we are actually wondering if the government actually played a part in crippling Klement's economy. in conclusion, you are not exactly painting yourself as being the friendly nation you are portraying yourself to be

OOC: I'm new to NS, have a little sympathy for the newb. If I knew so many people were going to support Klement then I wouldn't have made this thread. I have at least learned from my mistakes, so could we please just continue as I planned? I still do, however, stand by my belief they have a logical reason to declare independence. Think of the situation in Iraq: the Kurds want their own nation, Kurdistan, so they can rule themselves based on their principles and beliefs. The same is true with Klement. The athiests are essentially living in a Christian theocracy, and that's no fun. They're allowed to be athiests, but the way they live their life must always be Christian oriented because of the way the government thinks.

And Urusia...next time you want to start a RP, better make a OOC thread to get some people to sign up...explain the plan....and then start the RP thread....this way you dont get 10 nations that are 100 times bigger then you making threats...ahh...yeah....and when making the RP specify in the title that is invite only....or closed....and you RP it with whoever signed up in the OOC thread...dont make open RP`s concerning possible military actions for now :)... untill you catch the way this forum works.

Krioval wonders why Urusia does not allow Klement a degree of autonomy in exchange for remaining in the Federation - surely if a significant population desires to make adultery and same-sex marriage legal, if not approved, why not let a single region do so rather than risk civil war? In any case, Krioval has adopted a secular government despite the belief of over ninety percent of Kriovalians in the traditional Pantheon. Why not allow Klement the ability to form a more secular provincial government under the auspices of the Federation of Urusia?

Klement may have handed over their control when signing to the federation, but they obviously werent told you were going to take such an extreme approach, also making us question what you say.

OOC: there is no comparason. the reason why the kurds wanted independence is because they were being ruled by a dictator. now that the dictator is gone, there is no problems. hell, a kurd is president of iraq now. also, before you do, there is no comparason with the islamic militants wanting to set up independant nations. they are wanting to do what your government has done, constrain freedoms (which can be seen as oppression), where as Klement wants to lift those constraints. if you had of played it the other way (Klement breaking away because they want tougher moralistic laws), you would have gained support. however, because you are constraining them, many nations would be opposed to that.

Urusia urges Malkerya to send peacekeeping forces to make sure the reoccupation is quick, orderly, and with minimal bloodshed.

Urusia tells Krioval that it will not disobey the will of God simply so athiests may live in blissful ignorance.

Urusia tells the Lynx Alliance that the Federation was formed because of the mutual belief in Christianity, Klement was no exception. At the time of the formation Klement was not forced into the federation, and would be allowed to have their own nation if they wished. They instead decided to join the federation, so they are obligated to remain in it.

Urusia is growing tired of the political situation and its forces are lining up at the border. They are awaiting the arrival of the reinforcements from Calpe.

`Good. Tell General Mihail Korov to cooperate with the urusian government concerning his actions. When they need us he should be prepared.`
`Yes sir. I`ll send the orders immediatelly.`

`Sir, we have received the orders from the emperor. We are to deploy in the vicinity of the urusian troops and wait for their word on what to do next.`
`Very well captain`, said Mihail Korov. Order the units to occupy a position at two kilometres behind the urusian troops and secure it. We dont know how these rebels will react to our atempt to open back the borders.`

As the word was spreading to the units, the brigade started moving towards the border. Humvee patrols were sent ahead the main forces to scout for any rebel movement on the way. Meanwhile, Gen. we highly disapprove of your actions. clearly, if the government of Klement knew that this was going to happen upon their entrance to the federation, it would not have joined. clearly the desicion to become a christan goverment came after they joined, thus they were fooled. unfortunatly, whe cannot send troops at this point in time, and we are hoping that Krioval will get some support for intervention. you say that you are not an oppressive government, but your actions and words have betrayed you to be such. especially when the option of autonomy, as opposed to independance, has been rejected by you. that is the mark of an oppresive government, and we, as a freedom loving nation, have no choice but to oppose you.

IC: Urusia once again reminds the Alliance that Klement was at first primarily Christian, but later became a beacon for athiests because of looser social laws. To declare independence simply because a group of people has flocked somewhere is essentially invasion, and Urusia is prepared to defend itself.

The 4500 infantry of Urusia organize themselves and prepare for the advance. Here and there are one or two shabby tanks, APCs, and several trucks filled with troops. General Greene recieved the word from the Calpe forced that everything was ready.

"1st, 2nd, and 3rd Regiments: Advance," he ordered, and the radio man relayed the message. The troops and vehicles moved onward in their own directions, heading towards either major cities or strategic positions.

"Shots fired at Delta Foxtrot 0759, 3rd Regiment is taking fire," said the radio man next to Colonel Larsen. Larsen looked upon the horizon and listen to the scattered reports. From what he could tell it was just a militia.

"Tell 'em it's militia," Larsen said.

"Yes sir!" replied the radio man, and into the radio said, "The enemy appears to be Klement militia, repeat, the enemy appears to be militia."

At the front lines of the battle Private Syzmanski opened up fire at the enemy forces in the forest ahead. The Urusian forces had taken up position atop a small hill, and were firing down at the enemy in the trees. The enemy didn't have uniforms, and they were using pistols, hunting rifles, and whatever Klement could distribute.

"Sir, these are just civilians!" Syzmanski said to the lieutenant, over the roar of gunfire.

"Yeah, but they're tryin' to kill ya," replied the LT. Syzmanski didn't like it, but he knew the LT was right. He concentrated on the battle again, staring down the iron sight of his rifle at the shady figures in the woods. He breathed heavily, this was his first ever combat experience. Most of the troops never saw combat, but some of the officers were experienced from the wars prior to the federation.

General Greene heard the incoming reports about militia. He gathered two of his advisors and the three observed the horizon. "Dammit, I don't like it," said the General, "If we kill these guys you know we'll get slammed by the media and foreign politicians. How the hell can we get them to give up?"

"I don't know sir, I don't know..."

As Calpe forces headed towards Springville, the 1st and 2nd regiments combined and advanced on the city of Aboran. The plan was evident: It was a pincer attack on the capital of Klement, Gunther. The woodlands to the north provided passage to north Gunther, the main road to Gunther intersected Springville, and Aboran was the gateway to southern Gunther.

Private Fisher sat in the back of the truck, lighting a cigarrette. Others were praying for God to spare them, and to forgive them for whatever pain and death they may cause. Fisher was a Christian but he didn't go to church regularly, religion just wasn't a big part of his life, so he had no desire to pray.

As he sat there puffing at the ciggarrette the truck moved onward, and then an explosion. All he remembered was the deafening noise then blackness. He awoke in a large tent, wincing from the pain throughout his body. He couldn't even sit up. Out of the corner of his eyes he saw two medics.

"Shrapnel wounds all over, there's nothing we can do for him," said the first medic.

"They really must be desperate," said the other, and the two walked on. Fisher tried to reach his hand out for them to come back, but death overcame him.

General Greene sat in the back of a humvee heading towards the battle at Aboran, listening to the radio transmissions as the humvee sped forward. His two advisors were with him. "So what exactly happened down there?"

"Well sir, an improvised road-bomb went off under one of our trucks, 5 people died, 2 are critically wounded," replied the advisor, "From there all hell broke loose, the guys went to clean it up but were ambushed. Now we've got scattered lines all along the outskirts of Aboran. The troops closest to the city are about 2 miles ahead of the ones farthest from it, and they're all engaged in combat. Naturally that allows for the rebs to flank."

"What the hell can we do?" asked the general.

"Well sir, we just have to bite our lips and wait until we can secure reinforcements," replied the advisor, "Luckily the other forces should be able to break through relatively easily."

`Sir, we have received word from the urusian army. We are to proceed towards Springsville and secure the city. We`re to expect heavy resistence. One regiment and some two thousand militia forces. About three thousand five hundred armed rebels in total.`
`Doesnt matter, we`re better equiped and trained. Advance towards the city. I want patrols scouting ahead in all directions.`

As they advanced towards Springsville, the general was getting nervous. No matter what the quality of his troops was, lives will be lost today, and he did not like this one bit.
Suddenly an explosion was heard and shots were fired immediatelly after.
`General, we have contact with the plutoon we sent ahead. They have engaged the enemy and they`re requesting assistance. They`re under heavy fire.`
`Send ahead thirty tanks and fifty IFV`s with twelve hundred soldiers. I want the rest of the forces to flank them to the right. And captain, send more patrols in the area to see any enemy forces that might try to take us by surprise.`

As the forces clashed in combat, the first casualties started coming in. Two tanks have been lost from the first minutes of the battle and twenty four soldiers, those that he knew about anyway.
`Captain, whats the situation?`
`Our troops have broken through the first line of defence of the rebels sir. The atack on the flank made it happen. We are advancing towards the city, and so far we`re just fighting scattered rebel forces. Their list of casualties numbers about two hundred soldiers and couple of outdated tanks. It seems they retreated into the city for now. We have about three hundred prisoners sir. What should we do with them?`
`Keep them under guard. I want a temporary fence to be lifted to hold them. Give them food and water and blankets. Dont want them to tell that we`re barbarians.`

Big Long Now diplomats have been in contact with Klement officials since the road bomb went off, and offer their sincerest condolences for the loss of life that has occurred. However, they deny any involvment in the attack, and are attempting to calm down the insurgents.

Our military is working on plans to deploy troops to stop the insurgency at Klement's request if their attempts fail.

--------------

"If I had known we'd be deploying troops this soon, I wouldn't have suggested that we step into this mess," sighed Big Long Now's president Richard Evan, "We can't fully prepare ourselves in time, but we can't abandon Klement! We can't send out our new recruits into Klement, we need our most experienced."

The president looked his general in the eye and said in a firm voice, "I know we'll be putting alot at risk with this John, but we need to call up our National Guard and some of our men who have finished their duty obligations. Double our offer for reenlistment, and pay compensation for lost work wages."

"Yes sir, we'll get on it," said General Clane. "Might I suggest that we just give them the regular amount instead of double, work comp, and while they are in Klement, we train our new recruits? They can buy us time to do that, and we can deploy the new guys and send the old troops home."

"Do it," the president replied, "Hopefully this conflict won't escalate, I don't want to start a draft and be known as the only president in our history to do so."

Richard stared out the window, puffing on his cigar.

Private Syzmanski watched as some of the enemy began to break ranks and flee, but soon the entire force was fleeing. Eager soldiers began to hop onto the back of trucks without orders, ready to pursue. Syzmanski followed the LT and climbed aboard one of the trucks.

Larson inspected the line before beginning the pursuit. He went over to the radio man and said, "Let General Greene know that the rebs are runnin' south, and we're ready to pursue on his order."

"Yes sir," responded the radio man, then he spoke into it, "Rebels engaged with 3rd Regiment fleeing south, repeat, rebels engaged with 3rd regiment fleeing south. Awaiting orders."

The General heard the transmission in the car, he turned to his advisors and excalimed, "Alright, let's get those bastards!" He grabbed for the radio but the advisor stopped him.

"Wait sir," the advisor said, "If we want to win their respect we should let them flee."

"Hmm, you're right," replied the general. He grabbed the radio and spoke, "Colonel Larson, reorganize your men for now, there will be no pursuit. Once you're fully prepared I want you to go around Spingsville and reinforce Aboran."

"Roger that, IRCO Flight 7. You are cleared for landing at Mitar International Airport."

From the coast to the west a chunky RS-102 medium transport plane sailed into Klement proper, making a beeline for the capitol city of Gunther. The slate-grey vessel, unarmed save for a pair of 7.62mm cannons, bore no insignia, while its pilots wore decidedly nondescript clothing, looking rather scruffy and unshaven. At first glance it would be impossible to tell that the four men aboard the transport were STAF operatives, members of the elite Cielonian commando corps...

Lowering the radio back to its berth, the copilot let out a slow breath. "They're ready for us," he informed the others. "They want us to drop down at an airstrip on the outskirts of town."

In the pilot's seat, a nondescript man with tousled auburn hair scratched lightly at the stubble on his cheeks. "Alright," said Domenic Valencourt as he made a minute course adjustment, directed by a slip of paper with the coordinates jotted down by the copilot.

Within moments the plane began to descend, angling towards the surprisingly long dirt runway the Klementians had prepared. The unmarked plane touched down expertly, taxiing to an easy halt.

Huffing to himself, Domenic lifted up out of his seat and beckoned to Keijiro, Antoine, and Jun. "Alright, let's pop the hatch and get this crap offloaded before the Urusians find out we're here."

The hatch at the craft's rear slowly opened, revealing a group of roughly-clad and lightly-armed men of Klement awaiting. Raising both hands at about chest level, Domenic stopped briefly before gesturing to the stacks of crates behind him. "Alright, boys, we've got a load of weapons here for you. Use 'em wisely, y'hear? Don't let nobody say the Wild Dogs didn't help out brothers in need." But of course the STAF agents were working undercover!

With a little help from the four Cielonians, the Klementians set to work offloading the weaponry. The shipment proved quite fruitful for them - several hundred AK-47s, a hundred generic RY33 rocket-propelled grenade launchers manufactured in a foreign nation - Leng Jinjao, and enough ammunition to give the insurgents a fighting chance and something other than pistols to duke it out with. After saying their goodbyes the STAF agents, upon offloading their cargo, once more boarded the transport craft. Turning it around on the runway, Domenic pushed it into motion, pulling into a much quicker takeoff with his cargo unburdened.

And with that the undercover STAF RS102 exited Klement swiftly, vanishing into the mists west of the beleaguered nation - in swiftly, out swiftly, all stealthily and with nobody the wiser.

Just what one would expect from STAF agents.

OFFICIAL STATEMENT: The Grand Duchy of Cielonia reiterates its condemnation of the Urusian and Calpeian war on Klement, but reports do not show violence of a sufficient level to warrant our committing troops or sending anything other than our prior monetary aid. It was quiet now, too much for his taste. As the 23rd Mechanized Brigade arrived near the city of Springville, they could see the enemy scouts retreating from the outskirts of the city. The fight was about to break out. And so it was. The forces advanced into the city, taking heavy fire from concealed troops inside the buildings.
`Captain,` said the general,`deploy the snipers in the city. Take out any armed rebel.`
The rebels we`re putting up a nice fight, but the calpian brigade advanced into the city, securing positions and taking out the resistance nests, one at the time.
`Give me the new casualty list`

Casualties list:
Calpian forces:
7 tanks
11 IFV`s
14 Humvees
123 dead
240 wounded

Enemy confirmed killed or disarmed:
18 tanks
23 armoured vehicles
900 dead or prisoners, wounded numbers unknown

Korov took a deep breath as he read the list. Almost four hundred taken out, and that was only from his men. He will probably have left about three quarters of his forces by the time the city will be taken. He cursed silently at the Imperial Army commanders that sent only a brigade to help pacify this region. Reinforcements would have to be sent if outside forces decide to intervene.

The flotilla lands - at least the transports do - and begin unloading their cargo. Within an hour, an 800-strong MASH has been set to deploy, along with another 20 IRCO "observers".

We're set up to deploy where you will, but we'll notify you in advance - we're on neither side, and if you violate our neutrality or start in with war atrocities, there will be hell to pay, and quickly.

"On the other hand, we're already paid for, and we've enough supplies to satisfy the needs of a small city. So, where do you want us to deploy and begin seeing to the wounded?"

OOC: Included are 20 Polar Bear transports and 12 MH-609 Pony helicopters for transportation of the wounded. The 2nd Fleet also has four Cadecus Hospital Ships in its numbers, for the more sorely wounded if needed. And the MASH has NBC training and equipment if needed.

The Free Government States of Big Long Now has announced it's official declaration of entrance into this war. For the time being, no troops have yet been deployed but naval ships are currently on route to Klement to deliver 10,000 units of weaponry (excluding ammunition), and 500 vehicles including anti-aircraft tanks. 10,000 troops will be deployed into Klement in the following weeks.

President Richard Evan brings forth this message to Urusia officials.

Klement officials will no longer tolerate this attempt at reoccupation by their former oppressors. Our government has decided to officially take the side of Klement in this matter, and we will be providing as much assistance as we can give to this now independent nation. A nation like Big Long Now dreams that war can be avoided, but now that reoccupation is taking place, that dream is anything but alive.

As I am writing this letter, we are preparing a deployment of ten thousand soldiers to Klement to fight against it's former government. We have one hundred and fifty thousand soldiers, currently enlisted and previously enlisted who are prepared to enter your region to battle on behalf of Klement.

You and your allies are naive to think that Klement will be easily reoccupied. Even if this is true, there will still be many who wish to achieve this goal of freedom from their former nation, and Big Long Now will be on their side to work towards this goal.

I personally pray that this will end with the least amount of casualties a war could deliver, and perhaps one day you will recognize Klement as a nation.

The fleet of ships sped through the waters, bringing soldiers to Urusia. Originally, the soldiers were meant to be peacekeeprs, to try to keep a lid on things while a peaceful solution was sought to the problem of the rebellious province of Klement. However, the situation had exploded before the Malkyeri had arrived, and now the Emperor had ordered that the situation be brought back under control before countless innocents died in needless fighting.

Admiral James Howe, onboard the flagship carrier Layman II, sent a message ahead to the Urusians.

To: Urusian High Command
From: Admiral James Howe, Royal Navy of Malkyer
Subject: Troop Landings

Leadership of Urusia,
I have brought with me a full corp of soldiers from the Royal Army. As of now, we are heading full steam toward your country. Where do you need my soldiers?

As soon as possible, I will land my men and we will move into the State of Klement. It is my hope, as well as my nation's, that this conflict can be brought to a swift end. I await your response.

IC: Vastiva is needed just outside of Springsville where a large field hospital is set up, as well as where prisoners are kept. Both groups should be tended to equally.

Urusia is outraged at Big Long Now, and they tell Big Long Now that if they just let Urusia do their business then the war will be over in a few days. By sending aid and troops you only prolong the war. We also do not understand how you can call us oppressors without even sending inspectors. Ignorance is no excuse for a war.

Urusia is glad that Malkyer has decided to side with the Federation. 1 division is needed in Springsville and another division is needed in Aboran.

"All troops, fall back!" said General Greene into the radio as he observed the scene. Troops began to break ranks and dash away from combat. "Form up by B Company," he added. A lone company in the back could be seen standing, and troops began to rally around them.

Corporal Smith had been running for awhile, the rebs were all over. Finally he saw B Company, and he stopped. The rallied men took up position on an incline and gave hell to the rebels. Smith noticed that the militia was equipped with some kind of foreign rifle. Never the less, the rebs just couldn't keep it up. They fell back into Aboran.

Soon the order to advance was given, and Smith hopped onto the back of a truck and it sped onward. He was running low on ammo so he grabbed a few mags from some friends. After a short ride Smith hopped out and his squad moved forward into Aboran.

As they entered the city there was no resistance. The rebs must've fallen back to Gunther. Once Springsville was taken the capital would be surrounded.

The Malkyeri troops had landed behind Urusian lines, and were now moving up to attack the rebels. The 31st Mechanized Infantry Division would head to Aboran, while the 109th Armored would move to help the Urusians at Springsville.

***

The tanks of the 109th, 950 Rosian Imperial Mk. Is, sped forward to Springsville. Over the radio, the divisional commanders sent messages informing the Urusians of their arrival.

"This is General Rodrick Mayfield, 109th Armored Division. I am moving my tanks, along with lead infantry elements, to Springsville now. Relay the locations of your forces, so that my men know where not to shoot. We should be there soon."

Sergeant David Kowaleski shut the hatch door of his tank as they approached the city. Reliable information was scarce, and so the order had gone out to be aware of anyone without recognizable identification. They tanks crews, and their supporting infantry, were to attack anything that looked the least bit hostile. Kowaleski hoped any friendlies out there would notice the Malkyeri flag painted on the side of the tanks and not do anything stupid.

The 109th advanced steadily toward the city. Once they were a couple of miles out, the division halted to set up its artillery, Rosian Holy Antiochs. After a few minutes, the artillery began to fire on the enemy positions, and the tanks and infantry advanced on the city under the roar of the artillery. The lead tanks started to take fire, and in response they unleashed a hellish torrent of return fire from their coaxial machine guns, though they left the cannons for stronger targets.

***

At the same time, the 31st Division moved to Aboran, which had already been taken by Urusian forces. The Division set up a command post, and waited for further instructions.

OOC: Malkyer i`m in Springville, can you give me your AIM id to coordinate? Send a TG maybe?

IC:
As reports kept coming in, Gen. Korov analyzed the situation. They owned half the city now, but with a pretty big price, as the rebels had the advantage of numbers and the guerrila tactics. The biggest stronghold, where the few enemy tanks gathered, and most of the rebels, was Tiraman Square and its surroundings. Half of his troops were already advancing towards that position, but heavy fights were to be expected. He raised his head, as one of his captains entered the tent:
`General, we have received a message from the urusians, that a malkyerian division is aproaching the city as reinforcements, the 109th Armored division to be exact.`
`Ha! Finnaly, someone that is on our side. I was starting to get nightmares when i heard of the Big Long Now supporting the rebels. I thought we would need the Imperial Navy to come to the rescuse. Perfect, send word to the malkyerian division to take the west part of the city, and send them coordinates of the Tiraman Square. Tell them to keep it under heavy artillery fire, and we wouldnt mind if they care to join us when assaulting the square.`
Malkyer
07-05-2005, 21:16
The coordinates for the rebel-held square were sent to the Malkyeri from the Calpeans, and these were relayed to the Artillery Command, which plugged in the data and began shelling the Square and the surrounding areas. A few MLRS vehicles were brought up, so that they could execute pinpoint strikes on specific targets once spotters got into position.

The tanks of the Division spread out, forming a line to keep the enemy contained in the city while the infantry advanced inward. The rebels took a few potshots at the advancing Malkyeri, who fired back with deadly accuracy. Their BR-7s could not put nearly as much lead into the air as an assault rifle, but it made up for it with an effective killing range of close to 270 meters. The Malkyeri were also by training excellent shots, and could hit pretty much anything they aimed at. In the space of about half an hour, the Royal Army had crossed the outskirts and was attacking the city proper.

Everything in the Vastivan MASH wore the IRCO Red Crescent - including the two S-90 APCs used for "combat recovery".

The medics and doctors were quick and efficient, skilled in both "meatball surgery" and in-depth workings. Quickly they were working on everything from shrapnel and bullet wounds to reconstructive surgeries and delicate eye adjustments.

Given the phenomenal number of doctors and equipment against the - relatively - minor number of casualties, they even had time for dental work on a sizable number of civilians, not to mention a few births and cancer treatments.

Overall, the MASH became an unofficial training and proving ground for quite a few Urusian doctors, who would undoubtedly be far more skilled in the long rum then what was usually available. There was also talk of a medical exchange program, but of course it was too early for such things to manifest.

The second supply delivery had been scheduled for the fourth day, when IRCO planners had assumed supplies would be running low. Due to the nature of the conflict, however, the camp had not even used up a third of their initial outlay.

So the prisoners and combatants got a shipment of French wines and cheeses, German mustards and sausages, Russian borscht and caviars, and not a little amount of hummus and pita bread - all on the IRCO dime.

"Advance," said General Greene. The radio man relayed the message and the troops in Aboran pressed forward to Gunther. The 3rd Regiment also moved to the north of Gunther. It was only a matter of a time before the ringleaders of the rebellion were rounded up and Klement reoccupied.

Syszmanski sat in the back of the truck, thinking about the days events. It wasn't even dusk and Klement was about to fall, pitiful. Eventually the truck stopped and Syzmanski hopped out. The troops got into their squads and waited, and then the guy next to Syzmanski dropped.

"Sniper!" yelled the LT. All of the troops scattered to find cover, Syzmanski hid behind the back of a truck. Meanwhile he observed a few of the officers crouching and observing the city with binoculars. They were pointing out a few things, and then they motioned for a sniper. They pointed something out to him then he nodded. He took careful aim then fired.

"We got 'em," said one of the nearby officers. Soon Syzmanski's squad was ordered forward, and they creeped into the city and gunfire erupted. There was a rebel in the house by Syzmanski, He tried to open the door but it was locked. He kicked it down then he ran inside, and then quietly snuk upstairs. He could clearly make out the gunfire, and he cornered the enemy.

It wasn't a regular, but he had an assault rifle. "Hands up," said Syzmanski. The rebel hesisitated. "Hands up!" yelled Syzmanski. The rebel grabbed for something, but Syzmanski fired a burst into his back before he could grab it. Syzmanski took the weapon and tossed it out the window into some bushes, he didn't want to leave it for someone else to pickup.

Syzmanski headed downstairs and saw a family of 4 huddled up in a bedroom. "We'll clean it up later," he said, and walked downstairs. He headed outside and rejoined his squad. Soldiers all around him were being hit, the rebels were coordinated now.

Corporal Smith looked through his scope and saw the rebels had taken up positions in houses on the south side near Aboran as well. Once the order to advance was given he began picking off targets from afar.

"Dammit, we need some special forces to just get in there and capture these guys," said the General, "If we can capture their leaders then they'll lose their organization." He looked at the radio man. "Tell all forces that we need a spec ops team to rope in on top of the capital building and grab the ringleaders." The radioman nodded and relayed the messages several times.

The rebels are highly organized and have taken up positions in strategic buildings. It is now house to house combat. Anybody may volunteer to lead a team to capture the rebel leaders. If nobody does then Urusia will lead the team.

Korov turned as he studied the map again. Some troops would be needed when this is over to keep the city untill all rebel resistance is taken down in Klement. Too bad the new peacekeeping calpian army was not ready to be deployed yet. Their urban combat special training would`ve been quite usefull. He turned his thoughts back to the rebel square.

The young corporal reached the position where the artillery was firing on the city. He ducked inside the command tent, and quickly approached the officer in charge. "Sir, the Calpeans have sent word to Command that they're attacking the square. They want us to limit fire in the area."

"Affirmative. Tell the CP that we'll stop the barrage until some spotters get there, at which point we'll open up with precision rockets."

"Sir." The corporal saluted, and ran back to the CP.

Tanks were not very useful in tight, urban fighting situations. Without room to manuever, they were pillboxes at best and deathtraps at worst. This being the case, the Malkyeri infantry were sent in, following the old mantra of riflemen the world over: "First to fight, first to die."

Three thousand men began probing rebel defenses in the western portion of the city. The rebels had gained some confidence after the Malkyeri barrage had stopped. However, they soon found that it was not for cowardace; rather, the Malkyeri preferred to fight close, using bayonet, grenade, and knife as often as their rifles.

Squads of men moved down the streets block by block, heading east, toward the square. Here and there, a rebel of two would take potshots at the advancing soldiers, who returned with torrents of lead. However, as they progressed, the fighting became more intense. The Malkyeri had numbers on their side, to be sure, but in a city setting that does not count for as much as in an open field of battle.

The front soon dissolving from one unified push into dozens of microcosms, each reflecting the larger battle. Far from a galiant charge to the square, the fight degenerated in countless desperate battles and ambushes, where the Malkyeri were saved only by their profiency in hand-to-hand fighting (All Royal Army and Royal Marine recruits are trained in both knife- and bayonet combat, plus many Malkyeri youth enroll in martial arts programs).

After a couple of bloody hours, the lead platoons saw the town square. As they reached the line of buildings, they began moving slowly across, in small groups of six or seven, ducking behind cover and firing at hostiles. Meanwhile, their presence was broadcast to the Calpeans over secure channels, as they were figured to be nearby.

Two squads of soldiers hurried into a tall building, quickly clearing it of enemies as they went. Once they reached the top, they rose a pole and unfurled a large Malkyeri flag. Though the rebels still held pockets of the city, it was as good as lost to them now. The men in the square cheered. After a moment, they were silent as they remembered the men who had died.

Korov smiled for the first time since this started. The allied forces have taken the square. He had lost a lot in this conflict, especially untill they received some backup. He thought back to the ones that were lost. More then 200 dead and 400 wounded. He sighed and went back to the map. The city was taken, but there was another battle to be fought, the capital. After this it will be all over.

Today, the two S-90 APC's got their workouts. Both had taken numerous hits by small arms - ineffective and annoying at best - and several rebels had learned the hard way, Vastivan vehicles were armored against RPG-7s.

Nothing larger had tried to ventilate the APCs so far, though there had been a tense moment when Federal troops declared the IRCO cargo as POWs - and wanted to shoot them on the spot. This was defused, fortunately, by quick thought and diplomacy, but a report would still be filed - and the medics would have air support if needed.

Casualties were processed, bandaged, set to recover in field hospitals - or sent to the real ones, farther behind the lines.

The IRCO observers made many comments about the level of care available in the latter - there was enough evidence for a UN loan to improve the level of healthcare in this country, once the fighting stopped.

The two rebel snipers who did attempt to rout the IRCO MASH got a rude shock when they learned the Vastivan's played far from fair when dealing with such. True, they didn't use lethal force - but the cloud of vaporous capsaicin which flooded their nest put them both out of commission instantly.

And on respirators for a week.

(OOC: back, was away for a while, and Urusia, my forces are actually a blend of myth/fantasy tech, future tech and real tech... you didnt state at the beginning that it was real tech only, so live with it)

for those in Klement, and in the rest of Urusia, that do not wish to live under the current government, we are willing to grant them assylum, and will send transport ships. Vastiva, you can have 70 dragons back, we will need 5 for escort.

To: The Lynx Alliance

We can provide transportation under the auspices of IRCO for any refugees you wish to transport.

It's a bit warmer inside a plane then outside a dragon.

Namaste,
