Vesicant Agents:

A blister agent. Also called a vesicatory.Vesicants are highly reactive chemicals that combine with proteins, DNA, and other cellular components to result in cellular changes immediately after exposure.

Vesicants can be used as agents of chemical warfare, as was the case in World War I, or as agents of terrorism. Vesicants include distilled mustard (HD), mustard gas (H), lewisite, mustard/lewisite, mustard/T, nitrogen mustard, phosgene oxime, sesqui mustard, and sulfur mustard.

The most likely routes of exposure are inhalation, dermal contact, and ocular contact. Depending on the particular vesicant, clinical effects may occur immediately (as with phosgene oxime or lewisite) or may be delayed for 2 to 24 hours (as with mustards).

The amount and route of exposure to the vesicant, the type of vesicant, and the premorbid condition of the person exposed will contribute to the time of onset and the severity of illness as well as the treatment. For example, ingestion of a vesicant leads to gastrointestinal symptoms more prominent than those that would result from inhalation exposure to the same dose and type of vesicant.

Following exposure to vesicants, the most commonly encountered clinical effects include dermal (skin erythema and blistering), respiratory (pharyngitis, cough, dyspnea), ocular (conjunctivitis and burns), and gastrointestinal (nausea and vomiting). The ensemble of the signs and symptoms due to a vesicant has been referred to as the toxic sydrome by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (the CDC).

Agents in this group include:

Lewsite (L) - 420,000 Tonnes
Mustard Gas (H) - 500,000 Tonnes
Sulfur Mustard (HM) - 500,000 Tonnes

Pulmonary Agent:

Inhalation of selected organohalides, oxides of nitrogen (NOx), and other compounds can result in varying degrees of pulmonary edema, usually after a symptom-free period that varies in duration with the amount inhaled. Chemically induced acute lung injury by these groups of agents involves a permeability defect in the blood-air-barrier (the alveolar-capillary membrane); however, the precise mechanisms of toxicity remain an enigma.

Perfluoroisobutylene (PFIB) is a toxic pyrolysis product of tetrafluoroethylene polymers encountered in military materiel (e.g., Teflon7, found in the interior of many military vehicles). The oxides of nitrogen (NOxs) are components of blast weapons or may be toxic decomposition products. Smokes, e.g., HC, contain toxic compounds that cause the same effects as phosgene does. The remainder of this chapter will deal solely with phosgene because it is the prototype of this class of agents; however, the principles of medical management of phosgene exposure also apply to casualties from compounds such as PFIB or NOxs.

Agents in this group include:

Chlorine Gas (HC) - 600,000 Tonnes
Chloropicrin (PS) - 560,000 Tonnes
Diphosgene (DP) - 555,000 Tonnes
Phosgene (CG) - 534,000 Tonnes

Vitriolic Agents:

Chemical agents used mainly as last resort weaponry. Usually deployed through high-altitude bombardment. These weapons - as stated - cause massive amounts of corrosion and acidic decay, causing metallic, organic, and in-organic substances to melt or be riddled with holes.

Agents in this group include:

Red Storm (RS) - 400,000 Tonnes
Circo-Nimbus (CN) - 400,000 Tonnes

----------

Organic Weapons

This classification of weapons was created for agricultural and human targets. The weapons in this catagory are inhanced or human-manufactored organic beings created for military purposes.

Agents in this group include:

Protein Consuming Red/Desert Locusts: Developed by Soviet Nationalised Associates in the '60s, these insects feed on the flesh of living beings. Engineered to live no longer than four days and unable to reproduce, the fail-safes keep the PCLs from escaping the designatied area and breeding.
Zombification Insectoids: Commonly known as 'head-crabs', the ZIs are a foreign organizism stolen from the nation of Upper Xen then further engineered to produce massive amounts of adrenaline and neurological toxins into the victim causing zombification and eventual death between 2-7 days after initial contact.
Houndeye: Also a foreign creation of mixed DNA, the Houndeye is an excellent example of a pack animal. Apparently possessing only a thorax, the houndeye is a faint yellow-green in colour, with electric blue tiger-like stripes adorning the spine of the animal. In place of a head there is a large, black, apparently compund eye that is protected by a single eyelid. While a shy and timid creature away from its group, posses of three or more creatures they display resonant behaviour, emitting destructive harmonics capable of rupturing the internal organs of their prey. Deafness and migraine headaches are examples of symptoms reported by survivors of houndeye attacks. However, if well-fed, they will not engage in harmonic behavior except when threatened.
Bullsquid: A strange carnivorous organism. Bullsquids manifest in the shape of some kind of sauropod, with two muscular dinosaur-like legs ending in two toes, and a thick tail, that allows it to swim, narrows down to its tip. Its colour scheme is comparable to that of a big spotted cat. It's hued a sandy brown. The bullsquid's skin appears to be slimy and viscous, like that of an amphibian. It has two white eyes mounted on each side of the head, looking in a 45- to a 90-degree angle. Its most striking feature, however, is its red, squid-like, tenticular protrusions which allow it to grasp or hit its prey with tremendous force, hence the creature's name. It possesses a ferocious appetite, as well as a fanatical libido. Thus, the bullsquid will attempt to eat and mate with anything it comes across, even though it is apparently hermaphroditic. Such behaviour has been observed among pairs of bullsquid. During each sexual encounter, there is an interlocking of tentacles, and an exchange of green phlegm that appears to contain spermatozoa. One creature will die due to its neurotoxic and reportedly psychoactive chemical contents, making it lethal to mammal entities.

----------

Bacteriological & Virological Weapons

Ideal characteristics of biological weapons are high infectivity, high potency, availability of vaccines, and delivery as an aerosol. Diseases most likely to be considered for use as biological weapons are contenders because of their lethality (if delivered efficiently), and robustness (making aerosol delivery feasible). The biological agents used in biological weapons can often be manufactured quickly and easily. The primary difficulty is not the production of the biological agent but delivery in an infective form to a vulnerable target. Most of the folloing were manufactored during the Cold War, but some at later times.

Agents in this group include:

Anthrax
Ebola Hæmorrhagic Fever (Strain(s):Zaïre, Sudan and Reston)
Morbipapilrhadivion Virus (MPR)
Asiatic Cholera
Bubonic Plague
Severe Acute Respriratory Syndrome (SARS)
Ricin
Avian Flu
Botulism
Hantavirus
Legionnaires' Disease
Smallpox
Tularemia

----------

Nuclear Weapons

A nuclear weapon is a weapon that derives its energy from the nuclear reactions of fission and or fusion. Even the smallest nuclear weapons are more powerful than all but the largest of conventional explosives, while the largest can destroy an entire city. The following is a list of each Soviet Socialist Republic and exactly how many nuclear weapons each has.
