GAT-17 "Gussar"

History of the Project:

Four years ago a first UCR made MBT was introduced to UCR's armed forces. Although the tank was an overall a good vehicle it was a failure when compared to tanks in UCRM's arsennal that were imported from other nations, such as T-125 "Proletariat". In light of that fact UCR's Ministry of Defense issued funding to the "Department of Armored Vehicle Design", the same agency which built GAT-12. Role of leadership in the agency was transfered from Igor Opoluk, to Nikoladi Pilov.

It seems now that new blood was just what the project needed. After only several months after first blue prints were drawn and first operational concepts were solidified, it seemed that the tank was going to be unique, powerful, more then a match for its opponents.

Now, four years later the project was finished, it cost 17 billion rubles, but the UCRM committe has deemed the cost as acceptable after reviewing the complete design and seeing the tests performed by prototypes.

An order was issued to start massproducing GAT-17 "Gussar" as URCM's main battle tank.

Main Gun: GAT-17 features a unique 152 mm ELGG cannon.
The "only" common element is the use of hydrogen or helium. ELGG is an extremely high velocity and efficient gun launch technology. Experimentally velocities of 7.2 km/sec (23,620 ft/sec) with 10% efficiency have been demonstrated. This gun (in theory) should go to velocities > 8 km/sec. The ELGG does require an electric power supply.

ELGG Schematic

Another unique feature of the cannon is its recoil system. GSO, allows the gun to be recoil operated, meaning that the main gun can fire multitude of rounds repeatedly, at a rate of 79 rounds per minute, this feature can be turned on and off by the gunner. GSO uses a system of pipes that is connected to the buttom of the gun and to the sides of the gun. Once fired the gun moves backwards, at that time the pipes filled with a dense liquid slow down the gun and abosrb and despense 97 % of all the enegry which resulted from firing the gun. At the same time the loading system loads the next shell into the hatch in the lower part of the gun. If the gun is set in the repeated fire mode, a small electric charge will be applied and the liquid will contain more energy then its capacity allows it, it turns to gas and expands, thrusting the gun forward, and firing the next shell, then the same process is repeated. The whole procedure takes .4 seconds, and a total of 8 pipes are connected to the gun.

The main gun can fire a number of projectiles, including Armor piercing ATGMs, like BPR-5.

BPR-5 is a 60 centimeter long missile, its head has a uniqe shape. A thin, sharp point is followed by a round surface. It is fired by the gun of the tank. Once it leaves the barrel, its single thruster is turned on and it flies towards the target at a speed of 17 km/s. Once it reaches its target the sharp point hits the armor makes a crcack in it, and the rest of the rocket collides with it. The rocket has 2 charges, a smaller one that explodes first and penetrates the armor, and the second larger one which explodes inside the armor and kills the crew.

The guns affective range is 11 km, the maximum range is 18 kilometers.

Secondary weapons systems:

BDU-7:

http://img34.echo.cx/my.php?image=untitled4sb.jpg

BDU-7 is a rocket launcher attached to the rear of the tank, as shown in the picture. It has 8 firing barrels, each one can fire 3 missiles. A number of missile types can be fired, including ground-to-ground and ground-to-air missiles. BDU-7 can reload then in an active position, leaning against the armor, at that point a hatch opens up on the armor of the tank and on the BDU-7 and the rockets are automatically loaded into the barrels. The tank has a supply of 8 additional missiles. BDU-7 is protected by 42 mm plate of
steel-metal/titanium armor on the top and 21 mm steel-metal/titanium on the sides. The missiles are lauched by a combustion resulting from the mixing of two chemicals, which are contained in separate parts of the missile.

BBA-2.1:

The tank also features an armor penetrating machine guns located on the top of the turret. BBA-2.1 is fired electrically from the controls inside the tank. It fires 12.3 mm, armor piercing bullets. They have a depleted uranium core and can penetrate 140 layers of kevlar and 12 mm of titanium. BBA-2.1 is recoil operated, and the barrel is constructed to spin the bullet rapidly while its leaving the barrel, that is done to increase the bullets vilocity. It is designed for penetrating the armor of light and moderate armored vehicles but can also be used aganist enemy infantry.

Strela-2

Strela-2 is a 67 mm anti-aricraft gun, placed on top of the rotating turret. Two barrels are placed on a separate rotating turret and can spin 360 degrees. The guns themselves fire high-velocity 7.61 mm anti-aircraft rounds.

Grenade launcher

GAT-17 has a total of 12 grenade launchers, they are all located on the sides of the rotating turret, 6 on each side. They can fire smoke grenades, explosive grenades, and so on.

Kord 2.7

A Kord 2.7 machine gun is located inside the tank's compatment, and can be picked up and used by the gunman if needed.

Armor: The armor featured on the GAT-17 uses an equal force distributer system EFDS. Once a shell hits the armor, the energy is distributed evenly all through out the tank's armor, making it almost impossible to penitrate with a kenetic energy round.

The front armor consists of 435 mm of hard steel and titanium plates which overlap. Below that is the heat isolation materials, such as a new substance called ZO, which resembels a thick yellowish gel which can absorb heat and despense it along its mass. Thats same gel is used in all of the armor exept for tracks and BDU-7.

The rear armor is protected by 347 mm of hard-steel/titanium plates and a layer of ZO beneath that.

Side amor is protected by 347 mm of hard-steel/titanium plates and a layer of ZO beneath them.

Turret is protected by a clustered armor, meaning that it features a number of circular shaped "bumps" on its armor, which are all over its turret. They contain 400 mm of kevlar and titanium mixture each.

Tracks are protected by a 2 cm plate of titanium which is hanging off the side of the armor as shown in the picture.

Engine:

The tank runs on a diesel engine, it has a total of two of them, each engine runs a separate set of tracks, they share the same fuel tank but separate reserve fuel tanks. The maximum speed of the tank is 97 km per hour. The tank can also move through water, it has a single water engine which runs a water pump located in the rear that pushes the tank forward while it is in water. The maximum speed in water is 17 kilometers per hour.

Self-protection measures:

Shtora-1:

Shtora-1 consists of a specialized computer/control panel, two electro-optical interference emitters located on each side of the gun, four laser sensors located on top of the turret, and racks of dedicated anti-laser smoke grenades.

The Shtora has two combat roles. In the first role, it works against IR guided ATGMs, by aligning the turret front to the incoming ATGM and using IR emitters to send false signals which scramble the ATGM guidance system. The principle involved is the following.

Wire-guided missiles such as the American TOW are guided to the target by means of a wire and a flare on the back of the missile. The flare is used to keep a 'reference point' of the missile in relationship to the target lock held by the operator, and the guidance computer tries to put the flare on the reference point. Shtora emitters create a large hotspot, essentially tricking the missile guidance into following the Shtora hotspot instead of the flare hotspot, resulting in faulty course corrections by the ATGW computer. In fact, the computer shall usually believe that no horisontal course correction is necessary since the false flare comes from the same direction as the targeted tank, while vertical corrections shall cause ATGM to either dive into the ground or climb into the sky, depending on whether the operator holds the lock below or above the emitters.

The second part of the system defeats laser guided weapons. When a laser beam is detected the Shtora informs the crew with light and sound; it then launches laser defeating smoke grenades, which enshroud the tank and break or degrade the lock. The tank commander can also press a button that will turn the turret front to the laser to meet incoming ATGM with the best protected section and to engage the laser beam source with the maingun.

Arena-E:

The system weighs between 1 – 1.3 tons (depending on the coverage and configuration) and uses a fixed, omni-directional radar, that covers a sector of 220 – 290 degrees around the tank. The protective charges are housed in a "belt" of 22-26 protective charges (depending on the turret size and shape), each positioned to cover a specific sector. Once an incoming threat is detected by the radar, the system ejects a charge above and sideways from the tank, to a position best suited for intercepting the target. As the charge explodes, it throws a deadly hail of fragments downward, to shutter and destroy the incoming projectile. The system is capable of engaging incoming missiles, at speeds ranging from 70 to 700 meters per second. The system creates a virtual "cone" shaped shield at a radius of 20-30 meters from the tank, and its response time, from target detection to destruction is 0.07 seconds. When the system is triggered, a warning signal is activated, to warn infantrymen that may be following the tank to open some distance or take cover.

Control Systems:

The tank features the same control system and distribution of controlls as GAT-12.

GATC-21 computer controlls all of the operational systems, including GATLG in-cabin vision monitor, GATNV night vision monitor, GATTV thermal vision monitor, GATRV radar, all the previously listed combat and portection systems, engine operation, etc. Its operational functions are separated in two cotegories, defensive and offensive. It has an automatic shut down and reboot feature installed for protection against EMP.

GATNV Night Vision Monitor Cameras are installed in several consealed places on the tank for maximum efficiency.

GATLG monitor uses the same cameras as GATNV monitor but does not run the image through a night vision lense. It provides 17 kilometers of zooming radius.

GATTV thermal sensors are located on the retractable pads on top of the rotating turret and give a heat signature of all the objects within a 16 kilometer radius, it can work with GATLG cameras for zooming capability.

GATRV radar can mark 32 targets at 61 kilometer range including missiles, enemy tanks, enemy vehicles.

GATWC is a system which controls all the weaponry on the tank, including the machine gun, the main gun, the BDU and so on. It is given to both Main Gun Operator and Secondary Weaponry Operator. It allows them to select a weapon (main gun operator it is just the main gun, secondary weaponry operator has a choice of several weapons), it will show the amount and types of ammunition available, it will then allow the gunner to aim at the target or just press the firing button.

In the case of main gun operator, he is asked to enter the target's radar designation and then press the firing button. The gun will aim the target according to the coordinates shown on the radar, the computer will calculate the angle, the speed and all other variables and move into optimal position.

Other Systems:

Naupir-1:

Naupir-1 is a system designed to blind enemy tanks and vehicles. It is an automatic system, working in cooperation with the radar same as Arena-E. Once a radar notices a target a gunner is given an option to fire a series of special mortar round sin the air above the aproaching enemy vehicles or helicopters. The system is most effective then used against a formation of enemies. The mortar rounds contain a dust-like substance of small metal particles. Then the mortar round explodes over the tank the substance is unleashed, since it is heavier then air it goes down on the enemy tank and envelops it, once covering the surface of the tank, the substance renders all of its sensors useless, including radar and radio by reflecting the outcoming and incoming signals, cameras by covering the lenses, and other systems. A single mortar round contains an amount of substance that will cover an area of 17 meters. Once the substance touches the surface it sticks to it, meaning that this will be effective even then the tank has left the cloud.

Your drawing isn't that bad, I rather like it actually :P
Still, solid tank, i'd probably secure a shipment or two.. oh.. go on. Note that I have a really small army so these are likely to see action. I'll TG you if they do.

The Free Allied Republics finds it in their interests to use the GAT 17 Gussar. We would like the set amount of 120 of these vehicles delivered immediately to our port city of Edinburgh. We will fund any cost necessary.
