OOC: Kardashev Civilization Rankings (Post Modern, FT)

Germanische Zustande

I recently read a book on higher-dimensional physics and whatnot, and it contained within it a brief explination and discussion on Nikolai Kardashev and his Civilization Ranking system. I thought it would be fun to categorize Post-Modern tech and Future Tech NSers.

Please answer the poll above, as well as posting what you believe to be your current level and why.

The levels are as follows:

Type 0 Civilization: This civilization derives its energy from fossil fuels, raw human labor, or other crude means. This civilization has not yet harnessed the complete energies and power of its world.

Type 1 Civilization: This civilization controls the energy resources of an entire planet. This civilization can control the weather, prevent earthquakes, mine deep in the earth's crust, and harvest the oceans. This civilization has already completed the exploration of its solar system.

Type 2 Civilization: This civilization controls the power of the sun itself. It does not passively harness solar energy, it uses the sun in its entireity. The energy needs of this civilization are so large that it directly consumes the power of the sun to drive its machines. This civilization will have begun the colonization of local star systems.

Type 3 Civilization: This civilization controls the power of an entire galaxy. For a power source, it harneses the power of billions of star-systems. It has probably mastered Einstein's equations and can manipulate space-time at will.

Type 4 Civilization: This civilization produces and/or requires more energy than an entire galaxy. It has mastered the uses of hyperspaces and the Space-Time continuum.

Note: I created Type 4, but it is a logical step, as it is beyond that of Type 3.

For all intents and purposes, you do not necessarily need to harness the entire power of the sun. One does not need a Dyson's Sphere like Industrial Experiment to be Type II.

Example: I consider the UFGZ Type II because it actively uses and creates more energy than a galaxy can produce. More than many galaxies, in fact... It has technology to affect time and space at will. It also has AIQSM drives which produce as much power as needed (Near Infinate). However, it does not control an entire galaxy at this point.

Those are way too out there. Most people would barely reach your second category. You need to edit this.

Those are the Kardashev rankings. I did not create any except the Post-Type 3. Also, many FT players fall into II, and some even fall into III. Wouldn't be surprised if Indra is a Post-Type 3.

Type II, possibly type III. If I have to explain, I'll smack you.

Would Star Wars civilizations be Type 2 / 3?

The "Empire" controlled thousands of star systems, developed the Death Star, huge 12 kilometer ships, etc. Surely the energy used in the Death Star is more than the energy in a Super-Nova, as both destroys planets, correct?

I'd like to see examples of Type 3 and post-Type 3 civilizatons. I believe that a better name for "post-Type 3" should be Type 4.
Germanische Zustande
30-04-2005, 02:07
Sharina, I 'spose I can call it Type 4. Star Wars is likely Type II, because no one group harnesses the entire energy of the galaxy. JJR, I'll put you down as II.

A good example of a Type III civilization is in Isaac Asimov's Foundation Series. There is a galactic civilization which fell into disarray, and eventually rebuilds.

I'll go sit in my corner and mine fossil fuels whilst you FT guys warp stars, or whatever it is you do for fun.

Type III, however we don't use a entire galaxy, but use power in the form of black holes (micro big bangs and colapses) and pulse gravitational (using pulsars of the diameter of a US dime) power, which is currently unlimited in power produced. In other words our ships use microstars

Hmm... Upon rereading the types, I suppose since I can produce Near-Infinate amounts of energy via Multidimensional Tears in the STC in which infinate strings from infinate universes resonate to produce infinate energy, that I am a Type III civilization. Which would also make JJR a Type III...

Alrighty then...

I am a type four.

I proposed this because we use perputal motion energy creating machines and devices that create entire galaxy's for use by using the energy of nearby galaxy's and their resoucres to create them.

Scandinavians, Do you control a full galaxy? And more? Have you mastered Spatial and Temporal technologies?

Ad as for my placing everyone in Type II, not one of us has control of an entire galaxy. 'Nuff said.

Sharina, are you a Star Wars nation? If so, I'll put you down as II...

I won't be at that level of tech for a good while. I'm in a 2010 - 2020 timeframe, and getting ready to RP entering post-modern and possibly FT over the next few months. I will be using original ideas, no rip-offs from popular sci fi shows. I just might use a different ship design loosely based off sci-fi shows, but tech, weapons, empire, etc. all of my own design / imagination.

However, I'm the only MT nation involved in the nearly "hyper-FT" RP of the Temporal Symposia. A class 0 nation in the presence of Class III and IV nations. Quite humbling, indeed. :p

I'm sure if my nation actualy pulled it's self together in a combined effort I might be able to become a type three but for now I'm type 2
Sharina
30-04-2005, 06:04
Hmm... I just thought of something.

Wouldn't constructing a fusion power plant move you up from a Type 0 to a Type 1 civilization? Seeing that a viable fusion power plant could be built anywhere between 2020 - 2050, and each fusion power plant would be a mini-sun....

Wouldn't creating artificial "mini-suns" be considered Type 1 then?

Post type 3, close to type 4. Level 3.5 if you will . We do have control of an entire galaxy, although we dont ruthlessly exploit it and have mastered those technologies said there. Our energy needs are of the scale of type 4 and I deflate population size to compensate. Problem is, and what keeps us to very high level in tier 3, my nation is still rebuilding the temporal section of their research.

Ie, we know how to build it, we've done it before, but considering that last effort went boom-boom bye-bye, we have to rebuild it. Once we do, a definite type 4. Which will take around 2 rl months and me finishing my app to Esus.
Omar Guilds
30-04-2005, 07:43
The Guilds *were* a class II civilization with a small empire that carved out a very significant portion of one of the Milky Way Galaxy's Orion arm. After their collapse after to Osente system nova, they are rebuilding with a small powerbase that extends over a few systems. They are researching quickly an alternate power source, looking to their white dwarf sun, Osente, currently as a frontier for Adaptation and assimilation of the dying star's energy. They are level I, about to move to level II.

None of the above.
Siesatia

Type III or Post III

Reasoning:
1:Advanced Temporal Technology - Can Manipulate the STC if desired.
2:Colonies in multiple Galaxys - Milky Way, Pegasus
3:Mastered Hyperspaces, including but not limited to Dimensional Travel, Time Travel, Wormholes, Temporal Rifts, and Pulsar Gates
4: Harvests energy directly from a Sun Via Plasma Collecters. And is working on harnessing a Black Hole via Gravity Inverter.
5: Control the entirety of the dimension between the 3rd and 4th dimension.

You decide. III or Post III.

I'm probably a type 1 nation, i guess, but my solar system exploration program is rather lacking due to funding issues.
Germanische Zustande
02-05-2005, 05:43
Here's the thing. The Kardashev rankings specifically say, "harness the power of an entire galaxy." Now, I can create power equivalent to millions of galaxies, but I don't control an entire one. Thus, I am a Type II. I'll put those who claim whatever level down as that level, but that is likely not your actual level unless you meet the literal requirements.

What are we if we have elements from catagories 1 throught 4 but don't fit in any of them properly?

Well, if you don't fit any of them, I suppose you don't have a ranking... You must fit at least one...
Theao
02-05-2005, 05:56
Lets see, we have one planet but it moves as we choose to move it. We have access to more power than required for 3, we have timetech(limited degree), we stripmine entire solar systems, and we can at full speed move our world at the equivilent to 10^15c/s or ten to the power of 15 times the speed of light a second.

I dont like judging myself, so you place me in a category that you think I should be classified in.

Yes I do control multiple galaxies and have mastered spatial and temporal technologies.

I seriously doubt you have MASTERED Temporal Technologies. my nation has spent nearly twenty four RL months developing Temporal Tech, is the most advanced Temporal Nation in NS, AND not even we have totally mastered temporal tech. To Say you've mastered ANYTHING after only a few months is a bit rediculous.
Neo Zeta

Arakaria

Once on Discovery Channel there was something about that "Civ-Types" and they stated that nowadays Earth is between Type 0 and Type 1. I would say that my nation is rather 0 than 1. But someday my nation will turn into Type 1. I'll never be higher - except the situation when I will join an Inter-stellar Alliance or region. But I won't colonize more than my own solar system.
Germanische Zustande
02-05-2005, 17:33
Okay, the people whom I place in categories, I treat literally.

Zeta, I highly doubt you, and many others, fit the exact specifications of the levels. Because I do not exploit an entire galaxy, I placed myself in Type II, though I have qualties which are of Type IV.

EDIT: Indra's Temporal Cores draw power from the Multiverse it seems, so he's technically exploiting an entire galaxy. And, having met the requirements then of Type III, he can fill the requirements of Type IV. Therefore, he is in Type IV.

Anyway, keep posting people!

I would say type three going into type four for the Godulans. In technology level more than anything.

Godulan Energy operates off of Quantum fluctuations in the universe in general, with a healthy boost from energy acquired from a parallel dimension that is particularly useful for creating temporary matter. We don't use the power of the sun... so primitive and bulky...

Our Probability Drive utilizes subtle manipulations to the space time continuum in order to create a larger version of a quantum tunneling effect to cause a spontaneous translocation to wherever the vessel needs to go.

But we haven't gotten into temporal research yet, so yeh, I'd say type three, if only as an average value.

Firstly, I have mastered temporal technologies becuas my civilization uses 'Strings' it is a scientific name for a something smaller then the atoms and so far os the smallest known thing so in the end scientists say by controlling these you can alter the space around you.
