[Targul Frumos, Second Empire of the Golden Throne]
The enormous underwater submarine pens again shook as the titanium and polymer composite reinforced doors to each individual pen began to crawl open. Red lights akwardly rotated next to each door, signalling the preperation of deployments, the muddy water soon eating the red wave lengths as it was so keen to do. Small amounts of dirt from the packed surface of the submarine trench trickeled to the bottom of the bay as the doors finished their hydraulic opening procedures. As soon as it began, it was over.

As if my remote control, in a group the submarines began to sail out, nuclear pebblebed reactors creating the electric static needed to begin the operations by the motor-reactors, which in turn powered everything else with the vital electricity. These submarines were not the Toledos which had been designed during the first years of the Empire, although nobody had witnessed the Toledos except the now destroyed Kahta. Indeed, they were the new breed of submarines, the Cartagena class Nuclear Submarines (SSN-200s), designed for a new age in warfare.

Their titanium and plastic composite hulls gave off a rather small magnetic anomoly, compared to that given by conventional steel hulls, and their coating of anachoic tiles, as well as sporadic gaucho layers, provided them with ample detection protection against the prowling SONARs of the enemy. Each carried a set of twelve MT-3 MADCAP torpedoes and twenty Principe III missile launched anti-shipping torpedoes, making the submarines silent killers.

They all had a vague idea of their eventual destination, and that was the waters of Feline Catfish. Regardless of international pressure the incident was spiralling out of control. Nuclear warheads had already flashed through the waters, and the cold war was becoming hot. Indeed, it seemed as if the national sovereingty of Feline Catfish was soon to be tampered with - and that's exactly why the Cartagena class SSNS were sent. In fact, that's why Emperor Jonach I felt that only a set of fifty of the new submarines could do the job. Of course, allies and those helping the same nation had sent fleets of almost a thousand ships, and over a hundred submarines, however, such deployments were completely unecessary. Wars today were not fought with numbers, but with tactics and modern weapons. The submarine wolf packs, five in all, would make sure that they left their mark in the war.

There was, however, a fifty-first submarine. It was a Pamplona class SSBN, also a newer design, with the same type of hull to decrease detection threats. It was armed with twenty anti-shipping missiles. However, the Shockhound Avengers weren't armed with 400kgs of OctaNitroCubane. Instead, they had been specially fitted with two kiloton nuclear warheads, much like the French strategical nuclear stockpile. The SSBN would scour the seas alone, running for any signs of danger, until they were ordered that the only recourse for action was to use their nuclear weapons - something that the Empire wanted to leave as a final option. Whether the SSBN was really needed was for time to tell, but with the Empire's recent nuclear armament in the face of massive nuclear strikes it only became obvious at the moment that a nuclear presence in the area was needed.

The SSBN would travel much more slowly, for obvious reasons. However, the five wolfpacks had a sole ETA of an estimated six days, depending on sea conditions, and fighting along the way. The Empire of the Golden Throne was moving to its third war in ten years, first against Kahta, then with the Parthians against Muslim terrorists, and finally to defend a miniscule nation's sovereignty.
