The city was a ravaged image of what it had once been. It had served as an example of what Snowlander would do to crush out any resistance against his regime. The shelling had stopped early in the morning, at which point Snowlanders soldiers moved in.
But the rebels were prepared. Most had been SOMI at one point or another, so had learned through training to sleep through artillery barages. Snowlanders plan to have them exhausted when he attacked had failed on all but around 20% of those that hadn't run when his army had been seen coming.
Gunfire rained from the buildings onto the entrenched SOMI in the streets, who returned fire with an assortment of weapons from small arms to air strikes. The rebels were slowly whittling away at the SOMI's morale.
In the distance, music could be heard between the gunfire. Someone had managed to procure citywide control of the speakers located throughout and was playing their choice of music. Currently, "Bombshell" by Powerman 5000 was playing. Several squads had been sent out to find and shut down the source of this music, as the general in charge of the attack couldn't stand music like that.
J. Dante Malakym fired his entire clip at the soldiers in the street, killing three. He had been in the city when they had attacked. Even though he didn't agree with Ms. Chaknov's methods, he hated Snowlander. So he fought.
"Yo! D! What should we do? They'll be getting an airstrike to hit this building pretty quickly." Dante looked around the room and his eyes rested on the firestairs. "We go up." He and his ragtag group of survivors picked up what they could and took it with them. As they were running up the stairs, a shout came from behind. "D, the roof won't be the safest place!"
Dante kept running as he shouted over his shoulder,"I scouted this building before I ran into you guys! I know a way out!" Shortly he kicked the door to the roof, sending it flying open. As the others piled onto the roof, they saw what Dante was talking about. A cable was connecting this building to one across the street.
Dante ordered the group across as he heard the sound of incoming engines. In the distance, he saw the silhouettes of the aircraft destined for this building. "Go!" The first person took off their jacket and slung it over the cable. They got a running start and slid across the street to the other building. Five more members of the group crossed. A young girl was with them, but she started crying. Dante looked at her and realized that she was afraid of heights.
The engines grew closer so he decided to act drastically. He scooped the girl into the crook of his left arm and pulled off an ammunition belt with his right. He wrapped the belt around the cord and jumped. The girl screamed incredibly loudly, causing some of the soldiers to look into the air and begin firing at the two.
A whoosh came and Dante looked over his shoulder. The planes released their missiles and flew on. The missiles slammed into the building, and it began to collapse. Dante felt the cable slackening. The edge of the building with the faces of his comrades disappeared, and was replaced by the windows of the building flashing by. "Ah shit." He turned around and wrapped the girl with his body. He slammed through a large window, his flak vest taking the force of the glass.
He hit the ground and rolled, dropping the girl on the ground. Dante slammed into a desk. He was slow to get up, but soon found the girl standing next to him, bawling her eyes out. He lifted his right hand to comfort her but saw that it was covered with blood. He opted to use his left hand.
The thud of boots came and Dante whirled, his pistol practically flying into his hand as he brought it about. He heard muffled whispering. The door handle turned, but stopped as automatic weapons fire opened up and stitched bulletholes into the wall and door. Dante pulled the girl behind the cover of the desk and then aimed back at the door.
The door slowly swung open, no one stood in the doorway. "D?" A frightened voice came from around the doorway. Dante smirked and responded. "Ya, it's me." The rest of his group walked in, weapons at the ready. One was dragging a dead SOMI inside.
Dante stood as the group tried to comfort the girl and walked to the SOMI. He policed the body and came back with several grenades and an assault rifle. His Glock-19 was running out of ammo.
"We should keep moving. They'll start looking for this guy when he doesn't report back."
The group nodded and Dante led them from the room. He passed a metal cover in the wall and stopped. He looked back at it and returned to it. He hauled the covering open and stuck his head. A laundry chute. So this was a hotel. At the bottom sat a large laundry bin filled with sheets.
"We'll be safest in the basement. If we go this way, they'll most likely think we found a way out of the building once they search everything else. They're most likely camped in the lobby, and we'd have to go through there to get down."
Someone opened their mouth to argue but Dante had already hopped inside. Several seconds later they heard,"Send the girl now."
Once everyone was safely in the basement, Dante blockaded the door. They couldn't get through that door without explosives. And lots of them.
The group was settling down for an extended stay. Dante folded his arms and sat in the corner.
It was going to be a long night.
(OOC: Through experience I've realized that I work best alone. Damnation beneath the Sands would have been horrible if it was an RP. And I need to finish that story....anyways, this is just going to be a story. Not an RP.
Also, I like to know what people think. Post comments. Even tags would be acceptable.)
