The mood inside the King’s chambers was grim, not only had there been no improvement in the King’s condition, but in fact, he had gotten worse. So now where there once stood a hero of Greece, now laid a tired, beaten old man who had finally succumbed to his age. He had been diagnosed with lung cancer, although he had never smoked once in his life. However he still did not quit working. Being childless, he had yet to name his successor to the Greek throne and to make matters worse, there were rumors of him writing an edict that would make Greece a democracy yet once again. None of his advisors wanted to believe this were true, but each felt that this was to be the King’s will. Because of this, rumors of assassination had been started but no one believed the King would live long enough to see the edict through.
Yet this raised another problem. Without any heirs to take the throne, and the King not naming a successor, there would be a great power struggle, one that would more than likely lead to civil war. More than one man realized this, but it seemed only one man had any solution...
“We must over throw him, otherwise there will be bodies littering the streets, turning our rivers red with their blood. There is no way that we would be able to quell any type of rebellion either. Not without outside help at least. We need a strong leader, one who will not allow Greece to be broken in half.” The four advisors who had been discussing what to do all turned and peered into the doorway of the small room that served as storage space. The light from the sun made it nearly impossible to tell who the man was, showing nothing but a silhouette against the white walls of the hallway. The man slowly stepped into the room, scanning each face as he stepped out of the light.
“Wh- Adrian, is that you. My lord boy, you gave us all a fright,” one man said, squinting into the still vibrant sunlight.
Slowly the man’s features became more visible to the other three men. His thick black hair, while not distinguishable before, was now distinguishable against his olive colored skin. His brown eyes, narrowed so they looked to be nothing more than two small slits under his pronounced brow. His lips curled into a smile, but it was a sadistic smile, a smile only a man who has faced death and lived could use.
“Yes my friends, it is I.”
“Adrian, I thought you were north at one of the bases in the mountains?” A puzzled looking advisor stated.
“Yes Adrian, why have you come here, we are all under a lot of pressure,” another advisor asked.
Adrian closed his eyes and shook his head slightly, while still maintaining the slight grin on his face. “My friends, I have come here from my duties in the mountains to aid you in your problems, namely that of the King’s successor. Fore you see, if we allow the King to continue stalling with naming his successor, it will cause the people of Greece to become anxious, and then if we allow him to die before naming an heir, the people will riot in the streets. You will have hundreds of people claiming to be the descendant of one of the ancient rulers, and Greece will revert to the time of City-States. I have already seen this in the north. My men and I have already put down two riots there, and we fear that more may occur unless an heir is named soon.”
“But what does that have to do with you?”
“Ahh, but you did not allow me to finish sir. As I have already said, I am here to help you put an end to this problem. I am here to ask for your support and your loyalty.”
The four advisors looked at each other, whispering amongst themselves. “Exactly how will you get the King to name you to the throne? After all, you are nothing more than a general in the army, what do you know of politics?”
“I know that when situations are dire, there needs to be a strong leader. I already have me men’s backing, and I will take the throne, one way or another. But if you assist me, I will assure you that no blood will be shed.”
“Tell us, Adrian, what are you planning?”
Adrian chuckled out loud at the man’s question. “My good man, I have already told you what I have planned. But perhaps you would like to know how I am going to go about it? Alright then, I will indulge you. As we speak my men are on their way here, but what I need from you four men is to forge a document proclaiming me as the heir to the throne. And in return, I will give each of you more power and riches than you can dream of.”
“But how will you convince the others?”
“But I have no need to convince the other advisors, just as I have no need to talk with the King, they are all dead. Now, you can either issue an edict stating the King has named me the heir, or I can take the throne by force.”
The advisors, though shocked by his actions, knew that not complying with Adrian would be their demise, so grudgingly; they began typing an edict which would name Adrian the new King.
Several minutes later the edict was finished and handed to Adrian who looked it over. Smiling, Adrian folded the edict and stuck it into his jacket pocket and pulled out his hand gun which was equipped with a silencer. He cocked the trigger and quickly shot all four men in the room. He walked up to one man who had not yet died, and stood over him so that the man’s body was between his legs. He lowered the pistol towards the man’s head and said, “Thanks a lot, but your treachery here has led me to believe that you are not trust worthy.” He quickly fired two rounds into the man’s skull before turning and walking out of the room where several men were waiting.
“Make sure no body sees this,” he said to the man closest to him. “I would help, but I have a nation to run.”
