last night i had an argument with someone about my navy which has 95 ships. he says i dont have the money troops or econemy looking at my info i have with me though from 1984. it says that the USA had about 330 ships/subs about 3 times as many as i have. yet i think i spend more money on my military then they did and my population is 2/3 the USAs or about that much. my econemy is about the same maby a little less. and i have about 1/2 as many people in my navy as the USA in 1984. i think i have a good sized fleet as well my army is rather small (i think) and i dont know about my air force.

sorry for spelling i will edit it later

anyway is my fleet ok in size

It not so much fleet size that matters as what you got. For example if youve got 95 ships of which 30 are carriers, 20 battleships and the rest destroyers, then yes that would be to large, but if you can affod and man the class of ships you have in your fleet then the size seems to be ok

Thats probly a bit excessive for your size. You shold probly be looking at around no more than 4 nimitz carriers (they are several hundred million each)

After a short but heated discussion, my nation's government has decided to take pity on your plight. Any top-of-the-line ships in your Navy which you deem to be surplus, please feel free to abandon off our coast. We will then take responsibility for their upkeep, maintenance, and ownership.

The best thing for you to do is use a GDP calculater (you can find links to the around on the forums) to work out your buget - the use about 15-20 of it to work out what military you can afford to keep

I would agree... I'd use no more than three Nimitz-sized carriers and realistically, two of them at your size. I'd have two smaller (deGaulle-sized) carriers or perhaps three helicopter carriers. I'd also have maybe three or four Iowa-class battleships.

However, what you have to ask yourself is what your navy is intended to do. Are you planning to use your Navy to project power/show the flag, etc.? If so, you need the carriers so you can use naval air power in the event you have to fight a defencive or offencive battle. Do you intend to use it for coastal defence/denying your shores to the enemy? If so, you'll need more anti-aircraft, anti-submarine, and anti-ship vessels.

One thing that will come up as you build your Navy is whether or not to use multi-role vessels. One advantage they have is that you don't need to have as many to accomplish what you need them to (instead of having one destroyer for anti-ship warfare and one for anti-aircraft, a multi-role destroyer would ostensibly be able to handle both. However, the disadvantage to that is partially exemplified by the old saying "jack of all trades, master of none." It will be able to do those multiple roles, but it wouldn't do any of them as well as a specialised ship would.

One thing I can not put enough emphasis on is to keep things such as the logistics of crew equipment, food, fuel, training, and other issues that bedevil RPers here on NS. You don't have to give enormous detail about every tanker in the fleet, but you do have to demonstrate that you haven't completely forgotten about logistics.

I realise this is entirely too long in comparison to the other posts I've seen so far in this thread, but there are a lot of things that go into building a fleet. Good luck to you as you continue to develop as an RPer.

persionly i use thirdgeek and have done the calculashons. mostly i dont know how much it would cost to keep a fleet up and runing. and based on thirdgeek i have 32% going into my military

First, her eis a link to a thread which will answer a lot of your questions:

http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=380354

Second, here is an excerpt from an earlier post of mine which deals with this issue:

In order to avoid that ubiquitous curse of the n00bie (Godmoding), make sure that you avoid buying or building too much. A brand new country will not have a fleet of anything- including rowboats. Brand new countries are extremely unlikely to have any capital ships at all. Start small and build up. If you are roleplaying modern technology, instead of building a battleship (which would totally bankrupt your country), start out by building several coastal patrol boats and maybe one or two destroyers. Later on, (when your country is in the 60 million + range), you can announce that the older ships and boats are being replaced by a new class of cruiser, along with newer destroyers and some antisubmarine ships (corvettes or frigates, in modern useage). Now you have the nucleus of a fleet.

Keep in mind that it will cost you roughly 10% of the purchse price (or build cost) to maintain your ships once you have them. This is the main reason most nations don't have huge fleets of carriers- If it costs $1 Billion US to build a ship, it will cost $100 Million US to keep it running for one year.

In order to figure out how much you can afford, you need to kow how much money you have available. Click on this link:
