Background The Casterbridge-class trimaran supercruiser has served the Incorporated Sarzonian Navy well over the time that it has been in service, and has served as a cost-effective capital ship for countries that could not afford to purchase a large vessel to serve as the standard-bearer of its fleets. She has served a dual role as coastal bombardment platform and ASuW vessel well during her time in the ISN. However, in evaluating the Casterbridge, particularly against the new round of modern cruisers, the ISN determined that she needed to be replaced with a newer, more specialised vessel devoted to ASuW warfare. In addition, her immense tonnage has led to the ship being less seaworthy and less capable of performing her land attack role than ISN planners would prefer.
The new class of large cruiser, the Endymion-class, is named after the Alliance-class supercruiser that served as the flagship of the task force that helped secure the establishment of Nellisland as a constitutional democracy, and a state in the Incorporated States of Sarzonia. The Endymion features a smaller number of main guns, six, than her predecessor's nine, but she carries 14 inch guns instead of the 11 inchers carried by the Casterbridge. In addition, she had her railguns removed to focus her efforts as a ASuW vessel and to allow for lighter displacement.
The Endymion has been built with a solid mix of power and speed, using its four Pebblebed nuclear reactors to allow it to reach a top speed of 39.4 knots, making it one of the fastest ships of its size in the ISN, and allowing it to overtake smaller cruisers and to outrun larger battleships. As the next generation of warship prepares to ply the seas, the Endymion will ensure that your navy is not left behind.
Endymion-class Trimaran large cruiser
Length: 241 m; Beam: 46 m; Draught: 12.1 m
Displacement: 55,918 tonnes full
Armament: 6 x 355.6 mm (14 inch) ETC guns in triple turrets (A & Y positions); 6 x 110 mm ETC guns in single turrets (port and starboard); 2 x 24 cell Mk. 136 VLS; 4 x 533 mm 'Silver' torpedo launchers; 6 x 'Hornet' SAM; 10 x 35 mm Millennium Gun CIWS
Protection: 203 mm-255 mm advanced armour composite (amorphous steel; aluminum; titanium; ballistic ceramics); double-bottomed, reinforced keel; hardened crossbeams installed across bulkheads; also includes void spaces. Composite rods and kinetic-reducing ceramic plates increase protection against kinetic-energy attacks.
Propulsion: Four Pebblebed nuclear reactors; four internalised waterjets; two auxiliary diesel turbines. Thermal insulation outside each reactor compartment reduces acoustic and infra-red signature. 39.4 knots
Countermeasures: AN/SQR-6 (B ) passive towed array and AN/SQS-57 dual-mode mounted digital sonar array; A/P Mounted Sonar: AN/SQS-57 active/passive, preformed beam, digital sonar providing panoramic echo ranging and panoramic (DIMUS) passive surveillance.
Decoy: AN/SLQ-25 Nixie
Aircraft: Four UAVs. Capable of recovering two medium ASW helicopters.
Complement: 790
Price: $5.9 billion
Running Cost: $200 million per annum.
