Why Do You Love Nationstates?

Perhaps, in a way, this thread could become an appreciation for everyone's specific 'loves' of Nationstates. Each and every one of all of you come here for a reason; the love of a certain aspect of the game. From role-playing your nations' rise to power, to creating alliances with others, to having your nation fall into a war with an enemy; there's just so much that can happen in the RP'ing aspect of it all. This is only one small part of the game.

Nationstates- The main parts of the Nationstates forum are fantasy RP's, character RP's, as well as sports RP's.

Create a competitive sports team to compete against some of the sports legends out there. Show your support for your own team when they go up against your biggest rival. Rally around them when it comes down to the last game of the season, and winning this game could put you into the play-offs, but losing the game will knock your team out. The thrill of teaming up with other people in their love for sports is an amazing thing.

Sending your main character out on a quest, involving other characters from foreign nations. Interacting with them to create in-depth conversations, interesting interactions, as well as secret rivalries, alterior motives, and the ultimate betrayal of the main character. Having your character fall in love with another character, and having them continue on with each other for the rest of their lives, or making their love reach a tragic halt.

The many options that can be created, all at the touch of a few buttons on your keyboard could make or break storylines. It's as if each character is, in fact, real and part of our world. Their strength, courage, and wisdom and the storyline that they must keep in line with.

International Incidents- Declare the rise of your nation into the international stage, and beware of nations out there who may be looking to topple everything that you've worked for, but at the same time, look out for those nations with similar beliefs as yours, and work together with them to create a more stable environment for the world. You have the ability to do whatever you would like to your nation; the options are endless. Become a brutal dictator who supresses their own people at the expense of making your nation a military power, become a compassionate leader to your people, and take care of their every needs, while aiding those who are less fortunate across the world to show that humans are indeed good at heart. Such opposites inevitably collide, and their own beliefs are at the heart of the hatred of the enemy. Will goodness and compassion prevail, or will darkness spread and devour those with soft hearts? It's up to you to decide, again, with the touch of a few buttons. The fate of your nation is up to you and the decisions that you make in your time at the throne of your native country.

Going to bed at night, knowing that all of these things are in your mind, is an amazing thing. Waking up in the morning to see what's going to happen to your very own nation, knowing that this could very well be the last day that it is at its height of power is one thing to look forward to every day. It brings excitement to your life, as well as the courage to use your writing skills to further develop your nation to become what you truly believe would be the best future for a real life nation. You also have the option of creating a nation that is exactly the opposite of what you think, knowing that you could very well become the biggest menace in all of the NS world.

Invading/Defending
Invading and defending other regions is another huge part of the game, despite it (for the most part) not being part of the forums. Join an alliance in invading other regions, and establish yourself and your allies as a force to be reckoned with. Or, perhaps, become a defender, and aid those who are undergoing a massive invasion by invaders that are more numerous than the natives. When you wake up in the morning, you may find out that your invasion succeeded, or failed, and finding your nation in the Rejected Realms. For those on the defending side of the invasion, you may also find yourself putting a new UN delegate into place in a new region, or your may find yourself ejected into the Rejected Realms, along with your sworn enemy. It's all about how you play the game, and who you ally yourself with. You may, in the future, become the UN delegate to the biggest region in NS, in all glory, or you may even become satisfied with being a part of a small alliance, but getting along with the rest of them as if they were your friends in real life. It's all up to you, on what you decide to do here at www.nationstates.net .

So why do you love NationStates?

This is more of a serious thread for all of you interested in posting. Why do you come into these forums every day? What entices you to make decisions in the ways that you have?

Here's everyones responses to why they love NationStates.

I love NS because of my interest in politics and governance, and the fact that although real governance is definitely many times harder than this, it is still fun and realistic. I also love it because of the people here. There are over 100 people that I know from this site alone now, and all of them I hold in high regard and would want to meet if I had that much money to fly to every place.

The only thing getting me thru the next four years of the Bush presidency is nation states. My left leaning college state is a breath of fresh air in this sick and twisted moralistic democracy. And to ease my anger I made another nation that mocks bushes reign of terror. Without nation states I dont know where Id be.

I enjoy NationStates (NS) because it stirs up one's creative thinking process and pushes one to his or her limit. I never thought of myself as a weapons designer until I began working on aircraft designs once joining NationStates, and it is a great feeling knowing you have accomplished yourself.

I also enjoy NS because of the sheer amount of diverse people. You meet people from all walks of life, some crude and ignorant, yet some kind and wise. I have made numerous amounts of friends due to this game, and each one helps me when I need it. They are like real friends to me, and that makes me happy.

I enjoy NS because it is fun. It allows you to guide your own "nation" towards your goal, whether that be economic power or world domination.

The many options that can be created, all at the touch of a few buttons on your keyboard could make or break storylines. It's as if each character is, in fact, real and part of our world. Their strength, courage, and wisdom and the storyline that they must keep in line with.

This is why I play NationStates. The exhilaration of actually ruling a country, making decisions, actually battling other people out there sets my blood afire. I imagine each of my characters in my mind, everyone else's characters in my mind, it is what keeps me running on a daily basis.

I don't know what I would do without it.

"Four things greater than all things are,
Women and horses and power and war."
-Rudyard Kipling

To delve into the heart of the truth of what mankind desires, and what we despise, give us power. Give us the ability to lead men, to oppress them, to brutalize them, to raise them up from their lowest points, and throw from the height of their majesty. Let us corrupt, let us be corrupt, let us kill, let us love, let us destroy and create, and then you shall see the nature of man.

Nationstates is a tool, a virtual package of freeze dried, insta-power, designed to allow the lowliest among us to have a shot at standing in the shoes of someone who matters, someone who can change the surface of the geopolitical world, represented through the idea that is the NS Earth. With this tool we can transcend the mere physicality of our being, our daily jobs and routines as students, teachers, truck drivers, and businessmen, and instead take on a role as not merely a leader of a personal world, but as the very essence of that world.

Through the simple interface that is the nation creation page, we are given the godlike ability by that great guru, Max Barry, to create something. To create a realm, to carve our own little slice of Earth out of the primordial rocks of cyberspace, and to mold it into whatever we see fit.

Five million. Our people. We’ve watched them, we’ve dictated to them, we’ve molded them into what we want them to be, and everyone has at least once, thought privately of themselves as one of them. We build for them cultures and ideologies, and watch them fight and die over these convictions that always, at least partially, reflect something of our own.

Nationstates is a mirror that we use as a canvas, plastering the content of our minds and our hearts and our eyes onto the surface of the virtual world, whereupon we add and take away as we see fit, until that fateful day when the creations and this world take on a life of their own, and their behavior, the essences we have poured into them, begin to dictate their future.

And all the while we watch, and we plan and plot their glorious victories and their calamitous downfalls. We challenge the realms of the others, so endowed with this mighty power of creation as we, and we send our creations to do battle with theirs.

But five million is only a number, and the name of this ‘nation’ is only a name. The letters we type in juxtaposition to each other are only words if interpreted by those who read them, and their meanings only that which register in the minds of the reader. And that is why we can play this ‘game’ for hours on end, and never, ever, grow weary of the little worlds we make and the schemes we plot and the Empires we build and topple, for they are all ours, and they all reflect the content of our minds, the dreamworlds we love and loathe but still come back to for the duration of our lives.

What is Nationstates? Nationstates is an idea. Why do we love it? Because it is ours.

[I'm not good at poetry, but I'll have a goal at it, just trying to bring on something unique]

I boot up my computer, as an anonymous individual,
and tap the botton of a mouse.
And in an instant flash of time,
twelve alphabets appear on the everforgotten corner
of my LCD.

I wait for it to load, to load,
civil rights, economy, and the population.
A myriad of statistics appears in front of me,
waiting to be changed, transformed, and revolutionized,
in "Current Issues".

I choose a link, and ceaseless lines of texts appears,
pirates lurking behind the waves, in a terrorizing storm.
Enormous echelons of armour prowls on the ground, like a mist of thunder,
businessmen and mercenaries alike, exchanging their latest technologies and gadgets;
and emperors, presidents, and Great Leaders,
plans their next move.

I tap on an underlined line of text, and
beautifully dressed guests, sharing their joy in a wedding.
Players feverishly attempting to score a goal for the Cup,
ministers trying to satisfy their stubborn rivals,
in a hall of diplomats.

I see another line of text, and clicks
showerfulls of proposals, waiting to be approved.
Members converge to debate about their national animal,
while other tries to grasp, the inner workings of
issues and rankings.

Overjoyed? I ask myself,
why, certainly, in a sea of possibilities.
Full of imagination, packed with choices, and void of boredom,
and then I close my eyes, trying to think,
NationStates.

Why I like NS...

It's a hell of a lot easier than Civ3 or Age of Empires...

Actually, in all reality, I love NS because it requires a much more creative mind. The game isn't designed for you, you design it. It all depends on your RP style. I, myself, am over-meticulous and over descriptive, and in NS, I have the freedom to be that way. You can either be general or be an über micromanager. The world - your world is what you design it to be.

I must agree, it is a tool for expression. You can be who you want to be on NS. You can be a leader in the international community, or you can play second fiddle. You can be a right wing fascist, or you can be a leftist socialist, or somewhere in the middle. You can be a despot, or the beacon of democracy. You can play as if you are running the country as you would in real life, or you can rule completely contrary to your real beliefs - either by being an extremist, or being moderate as well.

Also, in conclusion, you don't have to be a warmonger or an imperialist to be successful at the game, nor do you have to be a pacifist and a master diplomat, it all depends on what your definition of success is...

(But proper spelling and syntax is always appreciated…)

I know that not many people may like The Matrix Reloaded, but allow me to quote it: "Choice is an illusion, created by those with power and those without."

This is not exactly the heart of Nationstates, but it lies close. In Nationstates, all things are your choice, but what is choice? You can choose whatever you want, but the consequences may set in motion events that you think are far beyond your capability.

All your decisions at home matter, too. You may go from a terrifying despotism with a huge economy to a small, weak democratic government with a few simple choices. Your choices define you in NS, in a way that sometimes even the real world cannot equal.

Also, there is the amazing representation of what could happen if the leaders of the world thought it was all a game. Imagine the terrible destruction, the war. Although I am an Imperialist Despotism, I realize that such a thing in the real world would work only well enough to slaughter the innocent.

But it IS a game, and is meant to be enjoyed. And it is realistic enough that it is fun to watch your nation develop. And for the purposes of a game, it must be fun, and the normal politics of today's First World alliances would be dull as anything. So here's to NS, the best simulator of the true world.

Through NS you become a Titan or a Shrimp. Through your own dictations and ideals. Without that then we'd all still be dreaming of lands under our control. Because of NS I have made friends and enemies. I have made people happier in my own life. I have learned and sharpened my mind. Everything and everyone on NS has the potential to be great. And that's an amazing thing. Without NS I'd still be daydreaming. Now my daydreams are somewhat immortalized. That fact and the scope that must be achieved in order to see the world of NationStates sometimes makes my breath catch. But most of the time it just makes me go "WHOO! 1 PWNZ j00!" softly to myself of course.

Hmmm, why do I like NS? There is no simple answer to this mind boggling question. However, some of the reasons would include the fact I can vent my anger and use tortures beyond comprehension on virtual people :)

In addition to providing an outlet for my sadistic and maniacle mind, it allows for me to put my creativity to work by forging war machines designed soley for destruction.

Yeah, pretty much all of my answers will involve burning people at the stake for being a which or something like that, but you get the idea.

"What is the world but a collective, non-drug related hallucination?"-The Great Leader Li

I love NS. That's a given. In fact, I'm an NS addict. Why? Here's why: Nationstates is an outlet for creative juices, creative juices that world outside, so fixated with making money, cannot ever tolerate. Thus the creative juices are expressed in writing on NS. The writing on Nationstates is excellent. It sure as hell beats reading Tom Clancy. Clancy's writing for example, is never smart, funny, articulate or beautiful, while writing on NS routinely is.
The world of Nationstates is imaginary as my fictional leader says it is, but still, where else can you reveal your intentions to take over the world with your custom designed legions of doom?

I love NS because it gives me a chance to express my RP ideas into reality; I have many ideas, and I suffer the sin of not writing all of them down!

Plus, it gives me a chance to explore building nations that match my ideals, and my unique likes (I'm a Who freak and I'm a big centrist, this is reflected in the presence of Mod culture and Who fandom, plus the contradictory situation of a tyrannical National Police FBI force with pro-business and stringent law enforcement legislation mixing with liberal welfare and prostitution laws, plus a good Bill of Rights and good diversity of population in my other nation, Upper Xen).

Don't get offended, please, but NS gives me a chance to blow off some steam; the RALM reflects both my bad side, and my anger really at those persons who seem to irrationally hate anime for no reason, and lump anime fans with Communists, Nazis, furries, and other deviants.

And, it's addicting :D .
Automagfreek
18-04-2005, 00:45
Let's see....why do I love NationStates?

For many reasons, but the most important is because NS allows me to do something I enjoy: write. On my first day (March 24th, 2003) I did a small RP about a civil conflict, and since then I've never looked back. Over the past two years my writing has gone from poorly written drivel to widely acclaimed classics.

In my time since finding this site, I have told the ever evolving story of a nation and it's people. I was one of the ones fortunate enough to find 'fame' early on, with the forging of the WMNK Coalition in the pre-mod era. In my first month the nation of Automagfreek' was a household name, with many friends and few enemies outside of the infamous GDODAD. AMF was a democracy and a 'do-good'er', because at the time 'good' was the thing.

Then when September of '03 came around, I got bored. Very few RPers were playing as 'evil' nations, so I decided to loose my creative juices.....and the end result is what everyone knows modern day AMF to be.

I love NationStates because from the moment I log on, I know that I am going to make a difference in someone's world, be it for good or for bad. My TM box fills up almost every single day with alliance offers, fan mail, and the occassional hate mail (mostly IC, although some OOC crap does make it's way to my inbox). It feels good to post a thread and already have people putting [TAGS] in it mere minutes after it comes up. It feels good to have people react when they read my work, be it "Hey man, that was good shit!" or "Jeez AMF....did you have to post THAT?!?"

Those that have talked to me outside of NS know that I am completely the opposite of what I project on the forums. This is because NS is a place where I can vent, and the famous Damien Dreadfire is a manifestation of all my hate, frustration, rage, and feelings of worthlessness. What I've done with Damien has most obviously been trendsetting, as psychotic and ruthless dictators have literally come out of the woodwork in the year and a half since Damien's conception.

Since then, the time when 'evil' RPing was shunned, things have changed a lot. But I really can't complain, because I take credit (or blame, however you want to look at it) for much of the current state of I.I. In actuality, the goal I had originally set for myself when I dedicated my time to I.I. was to fill it with such good RP that it turns the whole attitude of the forum around. Well, looks like my efforts were not in vain, as many good RPers have emerged in I.I, and gradually the assumption that I.I is a n00b forum is wearing away. Mission accomplished.

In short, I love NS because it's my online home away from home. Although sometimes it can be a burden, I love signing onto AIM and getting between 5 to 10 messages within seconds, all asking how I'm doing, and some people seriously worshipping me (100% true, I've saved some of the logs because they were like....wow). I love logging into IRC and having people all say 'Oh hey, it's AMF!'

I love NS because I know I've made an impact, my literal goal since day 1. I know that if I were to quit NS today, that the nation of Automagfreek would live on forever in the hearts and minds of all the players who interacted with it. But as long as I have money for an internet connection and as long as I have a story to tell, 'ole AMF will still be here.

The ability to be a complete despot and kill millions of people without all those nasty war crimes tribunals...

No? Uh... lets see.

I like to write, so text based RPs are right up my alley. I like massively multiplayer online games so NS fits that too. I like the un-surpassed feeling of power I get when I log on to Crimmond. I know I'm not really doing anything real, but that feeling of power is still nice.

Most of all it's not what I do on here that I love aout NS, it's reading what everyone else(just about... there are a few of you that I can't stand) is doing. From the last of the great N00k-Fests(Ubercaust) to the World Wars to the rise and fall of alliances to my favorite thread: AMF's the Halls of the Dead reopen. (You know that feeling you get when you watch Silence of teh Lambs? That 'What the hell happened to teh author as a kid' thoughts? I get that vibe reading that thread every time) It's also because, unlike reading Turtledove novels or Clancey(as MassPwnage said), you people make me laugh my ass off at times and allmost allways brighten my mood.

I'm not going to go on and on about stuff. I do that every few months in those 'a look at (however long) on NS' I have to write periodicly. So I'll just say that it is the community, the quality, the sheer size and the conspiracy over whether NS2 actually exists or if it's all a behavioral test Max thought up that keeps me here. Plus the fact I'm gunning for 1st in population. Hehe.

Where to begin..

..how about 25+ years of rping in one form or another. AD&D, Battletech, Star Wars and more. I'd go into comic stores and hobby shops, to look for the rp games first. I still do. I know of several places up here in Montana, to go to, to get my fix for the latest of my favorites. (..take a big guess which ones I'm still using. =^^= )

Add to that as of late in the past five plus years, is anime. Mainly a Tenchi Muyo fan off the bat, I grew to watch a 'lot' of anime types, and found the sci-fi/comedy/drama ones good. Forget Lain or stuff like that, Tenchi was where I centered around, along with a few others, of by the characters i use, you can tell which ones. =^^=

And of course, and entire life of sci-fi dedication. ST/SW hardcore (short of dressing up and talking Yodaish..) add Stargate SG-1, and a few other specific ones. (..yes I even 'like' the original Dune, nd Wing Commander for a sci-fi fan wasn't that half bad...

..wonder how that Hitchhiker's movie will play out, compared to the PBS series.)

So, that's the foundation.

Add to that about five plus years of jumping between anime boards, ADJ.com and Cabbit.net were my first forays, and with the above series watched, melded an rp universe of my own, give or take a 'lot' of theme ideas borrowed. (..emulate greatness, that we do..)

And so, I rped on boards for a long time, and up until the end of last year, I was doing it at www.cabbit.net. However like any good thing done for a long time, the character rps I had done for that same five plus years began to drain moi.

I needed something new, and wasn't looking for it. Kinda got myself stagnant.

Then a poster mentioned this place.

1 January 2005, the Gaian Ascendancy was born. Well, actually it was already born about 15 years prior through a bunch of drawings, a bunch of mind rps in my own head, and a bunch of imagination.

When the Gaian Ascendancy, and the Lord Excellency came here, it had already been rped as a uber-advanced race that stretched over hundreds of millions of galaxies, and guarded over so many souls, even I knew that godmod was being pushed past the limit. That 500km baby I poped here? Already concieved well before I even came here.

Haven't mentioned the star system cluster with seven constructed star systems and all habitable.

Haven't mentioned whole star systems able to be moved at a whim.

Haven't mentioned I like steak and A-1 either, but I won't go there. =^^=

NationStates, is a place that 'doesn't' require character rp. Play as a whole 'nation'? Cool, I've been doing that limited anyway.

Do it convincingly? 'That' was an rp challenge in of itself.

Do it while risking flames not even Dante would have crossed? Well, I posted anyway. (..I even felt butterflies with my first few posts here.)

..and from early January to now, all this year, look where all the rps have evolved into. Gone from a nobody (again) to an established rper. I even have won a rp Cup championship, but even more, have made a bunch of new online friends.

I mean, where else could people with too much time on their hands come and try to act like they know what they're doing with a goverment, and have 'fun' doing it.

Sure, there's a bit too much fighting and weapon gloating going on, and i can do the same, but to rp more peaceful means? Another challenge.

Detail out to paint a picture in words? Cool...

Why do I love coming here?

I've made some new friends, and I found my rp edge back. When you lose the edge for something you like doing, to get it back in a new vein makes for a damned good feeling. What more, having founded a 'thriving' region gives an even 'greater' feeling. Eternal Dimensions was a region I began, with success in mind, but no expectation of 'actually' seeing it. Take a look at it now. A full blonw ADN member, and a 'respected' region of it's own regard. All of my own founding anf risk.

I'm not leaving NS for a good while. Not even with a plasma gun to my head. =^^=

NationStates. Just that very term makes me think back to the stories of Ancient Greece, the Roman Empire, The Mongolian empire, Napoleon Bonaparte, the British empire and the rise of western civilizations.

Knights, Monarchs, the local silversmith, the cobbler, the law, the civilians of everyday life all thrown into a culture, a government, a LIFE. These are the people that live their lives. These are the people who bring the story of richest design. They bring to you their woes, their joys, their successes and failures. Some go on to live a life of reknown, forever etched into the history books. Some are infamous for their criminal, evil actions. And some have no big role to claim, but in their own way have become important to the entire cosmos.

There is a saying that can be attributed to this:

"Some are born into greatness, some have greatness thrust upon them, and some make greatness of themselves."

This is the core of NationStates. You choose who becomes great, who rises from the shadows of poverty to become ruler of all. These are the people that portray who we wish to be, who we see as ourselves in some cases. Nationstates brings people together, regardless of age, race, creed, or opinions and fuses them together to create the ultimate experience in imagination.

In a way, Max Barry has reinforced the very ideals of Martin Luther King Jr., and many others by saying "I have a dream, a dream where 'nations' gather and live in peace, or in war. Nations that come from the minds of young and old, of many backgrounds. Nations that live forever as wonderfully written stories."

Nationstates allows each of us, young or old, to release that muse of fantastic writing; that childish delight to bring out the toys and create hours on end of endless stories and epics.

Nationstates is the Epic story of our minds. As the infamous saying goes, "May the force be with you."

"Ah, I see your schwartz is as big as mine!" Heehe!

I love NS because it confers upon me the ability to do things that RL politicians would not dare dream of.

I love NS because my ever-growing population (if I wanted to RP realistically instead of creating/inflating wanky NS Earths) forced me to address the problems of overpopulation--lack of arable land, densely crowded and polluted cities, etc.

I love NS because I can RP the consequences of global warming as I please upon my nation, without getting laughed at OOCly as an OMG evil librul conspiricy theorist. Hell, I haven't even been laughed at ICly. As Evil Woody Thoughts struggled against a rapidly changing (subtropical to boreal) climate, her politicians decided to start over through a multi-trilion dollar space program that will eventually see Woodians driven from the Earth entirely.

For me, NS is a venue to roleplay the eventual consequences of the same issues that I feel RL political leaders are ignoring. A release valve of sorts. But it also gives me a chance to roleplay human ingenuity; when other nations built superdreadnaughts, Evil Woody Thoughts was researching volcanology, figuring out how to reclaim land from the Atlantic.

When this proved inadequate, and when massive snow cyclones started to periodically ravage Evil Woody Thoughts, the politicians found that starting over, on another planet, might be a good idea. I am currently roleplaying my transition to FT, and most importantly, I'm having fun doing it. :)

No, I never became a household name like some others here. I really have no idea what my IC relations with other nations are simply because I have never interacted ICly with the vast majority of them. When I have, it has been mostly for purposes of averting the latest genocide; I would hope that my nation, or at least its terran history, is known for being the approximate NS equivalent of a cross between the Swiss and the Hague. While I only rp with a few other nations, mostly FT nations giving me aid now, my threads have typically had many readers but few posters. That's OK by me, for Woodians are fundamentally isolationist people. However, the transition to FT is starting to change that, and hopefully I will become a household name in the FT universe.

Why do I love Nation States?

Well to be honest it gives me the power to create a Nation according to my own (apparently twisted) political, social and economic ideals. I love the fact that people suprise me sometimes with their own nations and character sets...

I am also a serious meglomaniac at times, thus I rather like playing a nation which along with it's allies likes crushing all before it.

I also have made many good friends on here (such as Guff, US, Krieg, Doom, Dump etc), as well finding many people I constantly argue with (MassPwnage, Prae amongst them)...

It has been a truely great experience and I hope I will be around for some time to come (much to the chargrin of some people).

NS gives me the ability to become a politician as I don't want to be scummy real life one. Agnostic by religion, you wonder how you'd run a religious state? I do it here and get all creative as my profession does not allow that outlet at the moment.

"Killing people has never been so easy."
--Me

Why? A short answer is impossible. Nationstates is imagination unchained. For centuries, the only force that has allowed mankind to survive this world is his ability to invent, to create, to imagine. Roleplaying is an excellent way to let imagination roam free, without the constraints of the real world. War and peace, trade and diplomacy, arguments and accords all grow within this nebulous, uninhabitable smidgeon of cyberspace.

Why do I love Nationstates? For as long as I can remember, I have loved to compete, and to win. I can take that aim higher, projecting it onto a scale far larger than my own existence, like shadows, exaggerating the power and strength of a shape. For me, the shadows are my ideas. I love to be able to continually surpass myself with new, better ideas. I love to fight wars, stretching my mind to its farthest reaches in order to come out on top.

Power. Money is not enough in today's world, and influence is only a means to the end. Power is all mankind fights for. Control. The ability to hold one's own life in one hand, and the fate of many in the other. Of the millions of nations on Nationstates, very few will excercise much real power, and they know this. Seeking to create a lasting impression of themselves, they write, and they learn, and write again, seeking power in this fragile, ever-shifting world.

To ask why we love this thing called Nationstates is to ask why humans seek to dominate one another in war and peace, trying to control others. Nationstates is one place to do that without the consequences of the real world.

Consequences. As Thomas Hobbes believed, so I believe. Humans would run amok without institutions to govern them. So consequences are necessary in real life. But when we as people are answerable to no one, how beautiful a thing to be able to do what we would like to in real life.

When we write, we step out of our shell, exposing our beliefs and prejudices to the world. So it is on Nationstates. So many people write with reservations in their minds, not showing their true selves. But I try to show what I would do in the situations of my leaders. I don't think of myself as a true roleplayer, of the Dungeons and Dragons sort. I have no wish to completely change my nature and identity, and become a character opposite to my true self.

I think of my self as a role-revealer. That is, what I do in Nationstates is always a reflection of what I would do in real life. Without that element of truth, the whole experience collapses, and holds no joy for me. Why do I think this? Because, as one of my favorite philosophers, William James, once put it: "Truth is an event, and only through experience can the veracity of the truth be verified." Accordingly, one does not know the truth of their character until events test that character. In some cases, these events can break the character, and at other times they can build it up. So, I test myself in Nationstates, trying to remain true to what I believe.

Why do I love Nationstates? Because it is the escape from the truth, and yet the return to that truth. Paradoxically, that is what makes it worthwhile for me.

Why do I love Nationstates? Well, I have to say that the whole idea: create a country, run it as you see fit, it certainly has an appeal to it. The mere thought that you control an entire nation, the power of choice that is at your fingertips, the ability to create realistic, or outlandish storylines about those that you control. That is one reason. Not only that, but it is also a way to express yourself, your nation is a reflection of you. It lets you take a stand on issues that you feel strongly about. The reason I love Nationstates is that it gives me the chance to take a stand on things I believe, and have the power to control those issues.

Nationstates is an outlet for what you believe, where you can take a stand without fear of repercussion, where you can do what you see as right, and ultimately, a place where you can make the choices that you believe are right. The power of choice is why I love Nationstates.

Bonstock
07-05-2005, 04:55
Long ago it was, when I was just a little n00b. My friend, the player behind Zecro, had just recently told me about this great online game called NationStates. I didn't think too much of it. I figured someday I'd get on, do whatever my friend said was so cool. I kept putting it off, putting it off, and putting it off, and finally, one night, June 1, 2003, I though about it while almost about to go to bed. Figuring I'd better get it out of my mind, I went to my computer, and went to NationStates.net.

So the computer prompted me to make a nation. Republic of __________. I had absolutely no idea what to put. I thought in the back of my mind, perhaps something in French. I was taking French, so it seemed like a good language for a nation's name. Bonfleur was the first idea that popped into my head, I think. Good Flower... what the hell?, I thought. Way to feminine, way to weak, way to worthless. But Bon-something sounded good. Bon... stock, stock as in stock market. It had a nice ring to it: Bonstock. Harder, more assertive, powerful. Whatever, I put it down.

After I filled out the questions, it came out with my new nation. "Republic of Bonstock... Moralistic Democracy..." Moralistic?, I thought. Stupid. I didn't want a moralistic democracy.

So I created two more nations that night, Stockbon and Bonvinia, in an attempt to manipulate the UN catagorizations. Both became Capitalist Paradises. Better.

I spent the next few weeks trying to manipulate the issues to get a more favorable UN catagorization. It seemed cool at the time, but I usually spent no more then a few minutes a week on it. I began to get tired of it. I looked around, and saw the forum button. It showed all the highest topics. "So-and-so declares war on so-and-so," was one of the first ones I looked at. I looked at all the pictures of the tanks and fighter aircraft, and all the story of the war, and began to think, this is cool!

I clicked out of it, to the forum, the International Incidents one. On top of the forum was perhaps the most influential thread to my existance. It wasn't a war, not even a story. It was the Kelantian Arms Company's mega storefront. I clicked in there, and became entranced by the pictures, the quick descriptions, and the prices. I began to ponder, could I buy from this storefront?

It took me a while to grasp the concepts behind free-form RP. I never looked at the stickies, through laziness or having missed them, so I thought there was something in the game that triggered wars and trade. But, then again, it seemed like you could just type something up, and give random money. It took me a while, but eventually I made that first fateful post. I think it went something like this:

"The newly-founded Republic of Bonstock would like to order 16 MLRS and 2 Barracuda-class patrol vessals for the defense of our nation. XXX dollars will be wired on confirmation of the order."

To my amazement, a few hours later, my order was confirmed. By that time, I had looked at the list of international leaders. I decided my nation should have a leader too. The Marquis Ste. Evremonde was my choice, him being the excessive, greedy, and cruel French aristocrat who was Charles Darnay's uncle in Dicken's A Tale of Two Cities, which I'd just read in my English class. My new leader "wired" the money on behalf of the Bonstocknian people. From there on, there was no turning back. I was completely hooked.

So things went on from there. I had my first war, where I butted in on White Tundra's side in his war with Dresden. I took casualties for my enemy, I took cities without RPing resistance, I had no concept of logistics, I was a complete godmodder. I eventually pulled out of the war, to deal with a matter in my region, the North Pacific at that point. I began to indroduce my corrupted version of Ste. Evremonde, again as quite cruel and greedy, though somehow strangely honor-bound and loyal to his country and its people. I RPed many anti-communist wars, (someone at one point called me the Primary Anti-Communist RPer on NationStates), finally having one big civil war where my government defeated communist rebels in the unforgettable storyline involving the downfalls of Ste. Evremonde, his girlfriend and handpicked successor Hu Li, and the noble and honor bound leader of the rebels, Alfred von Strauswitz, and the rise of a new leader, Gustav Adolph. Later came the Asian wars, my numerous bids to take over Japan, Yemen, and other nations, all defeated by the union of the Azn Resistance. To create a good story, Gustav Adolph was assasinated, though his son, Harald, the son of Gustav, avenged his father twenty years later, killing those who had killed his father and ascending to power, only to be killed following his over-inflated ambition right into an enemy trap on the island of Okinawa. I eventually came to realize that Harald, perhaps my greatest original charachter, was too good to just kill off like that. I resurrected him, and he descended from Valhalla to take the mantle of Lord of all Bonstocknians. So came about the present day of my RPing.

Whatever the rate is, I've made friends and enemies, and everyday I plan and wait for the day that Bonstock's flame is finally extinquished, the day when Bonstock feels its final reckoning. Someday, a war will destroy everything I've worked so hard to build. But when it comes, I'll be ready and waiting. Perhaps that is the fun of NationStates, preparing someday for that final battle that will make or break you. That is the battle I want to fight someday, and what makes NS so god damn fun to play.

Malkyer
14-07-2005, 21:45
I remember why I created Malkyer, and why Nationstates has become such a large part of my life.

Way back in August '04 (not that long, I know), I created my first nation at the urging of my friend, who'd just come across the game. I languished as the Democratic States of Shandar for several days, not really doing anything. I made a few n00bish posts in I.I., and probably earned quite a bit of ridicule, all of it deserved, I'm sure.

Eventually, I decided to make a serious attempt at making an impact in the 'world' of I.I. I realized that the best way would be to start over completely, so I clicked the 'Create Nation' button on the main page, rather than signing in. Republic of _______? I don't want a republic. I wanted a nation able to look to the future beyond the next election, but I didn't want a dictatorship either. Constitutional Monarchy? Something inside me thought that sounded too weak. I opted for Kingdom out of personal preference. What did I want my nation to be called? At the time, I'd just finished reading the tenth volume of Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series, and I decided to shamelessly steal the name Malkier, only I spelt it with a 'y' rather than an 'i', so as to avoid complete and total plagarism. For some reason, I felt Jordan's Malkier was exactly what I wanted my nation to be like, a strong nation standing firm against darkness alone or in the company of allies, a nation and a people that never gave up, that did what was right. Call it idealism.

After a few weeks, perhaps a month, of watching, getting involved in some minor RPs, and tentatively testing the waters, I decided to throw myself in. I've been in a lot of good RPs, from hiring out a regiment of Royal Marines as mercenaries to Wirraway, to the Pushkan War, to the New Crusades, to more recent conflicts like the failed Communist coup in Roach-Busters and my own civil war. The countless RP's I've done with Dracun Imperium, at times my sworn enemy and others a close ally, depending on who's overthrown the government that month. There have been non-combat RPs as well, like the state visit to Ottoman Khaif that cemented Malkyer's greatest alliance, to the great conspiracy involving myself, Tyrandis, and the Real ALM plotting to wipe Kahta from the map.

I guess where I'm going with all this is here: I love Nationstates because it's given me an arena to write, to govern, and fight for my ideals.

Being a sixteen-year-old kid often leaves me with a feeling of helplessness, a feeling that I can't do any good in the world because of my age and lack of experience. Logging in as Malkyer lets me know that I can do some good, even if it's virtual. If a rogue nation here lashes out against my people, I can strike back and wipe him from the earth with unholy fury. If a younger nation is wracked by plague and war, I can send in aid workers to help the innocent.

I used to think that I wasn't a creative person. NS has taught to express what I feeling in an articulate way, one that people will listen too, and maybe even respect. For all these reasons, I love NS.

Of course, NS has helped me to become long-winded and circuitous in explaining things, as well. ;)

Nationstates used to be so fun, first taking over regions with Louldamin, being the delegate of 000, being a powerful senator in the New Meritocracy, seizing the United States region back from the French, and the huge ass wars with GDODAD and the huge alliances. No one even remembers the Amerigo Slave Wars, or my glassing of Sony Vaio. All the big players are gone, Francisco isn't in control of the Pacific.

The golden age for me anyways is over.

This is the only roleplay that sastifies my dictatorial attitudes, my want to create a paradise, and huge f'ing battles with fleets and all that.

Why I love Nationstates..

I love NS because I can create the prefect nation and do want I want. I can now commit genocide without the US hunting my ass. I have acomplished my dream of being a dictator by still maintain the idenity of President.

I like NS because it is challenging.

The daily issues send a challenge to you, and they can be the same as RL.
The UN is nearly the same, but more complex, and the decisions of others can effect you.
I have discovered Defending, a great part of the game to play.
I have just discovered RP, wich allows me to fight wars, without waiting for NS2.

But,
I won't pay for NS2

Keep up the good work!

Why I love NS..... Many choices.

For one, I own a very large FT store front which has sold over 4 quadrillion credits (I bet I sold even more products). I also inovated the Star Destroyer, making it even more powerful and deadly. Hence the Towerless Star Destroyer. I have also improved on my creative writing skills (passed Creative Writing class with a B+!). I've included NS in several college essays (two of which were sent, I was accepted).

I have met a lot of people, and I feel I get along with most of the ones whom I Rp with.

Over all, I think I've been successful here on NS.

Oh, and I get along with mods too. (Messing with mod's is like bleeding in shark infested water)

I like the flexibility. Currently, I mostly update the issues, post in General, and post a few short IC posts when appropriate. If I have more time, or gain more confidence in my n00b RP skills, I can get more heavily into the RP. I can RP a nation with my own values (more or less), I can play a left-wing nutball (or even a right-wing one), or a genocidal dictator. I'm not even limited to reality; I've seen a lot of FT threads, and even some magical ones. The only real limits are my imagination.

I first joined in 2002, as a nation called Moopiedom. Please excuse the name. It was my 'good' country, back in the day when (as AMF pointed out) good was cool. I didn't do much via the forums, nor did I really interact that much with other nations. I think I was a New York Times Democracy.

And then, I got bored. Being a straightedge nation wasn't much fun, so I created Gurguvungunit by having my cat walk across the keyboard and adding a few vowels here and there. I joined Imperial Empire, a somewhat notorious region dedicated to invasion just as the mods were cracking down on their practices. Most of the senior people got the axe, and the newbs all went their separate ways. A few buddies and I invaded a nation called Cheeseland, where we set up shop as benevolent dictators and stayed for a while. And then I got bored again. I joined the forums and did an RP here and there, quickly coming to enjoy myself as a minor RP personality in around 2003-4. I formed a new region, with a sizeable backstory and a large group of 'ally' nations. We intended to do a regional RP, but it fell through. I briefly entertained the notion of becoming a mod, but I don't have the attitude for it.

With the death of my sixth unfinished RP, I quit NationStates in September 2005. I did not intend to look back. I had tried quitting before, but I couldn't stay away for more than three days. This time, I was gone for seven months, but I'm back. I don't know why.

I love NS. Something about it draws me back each time. It's a great community, with celebrities, leaders, factions, outcasts and all the rest. I have one or two friends left from the old days, I may find more. A few of the newbs that I first called for godmoding in II are now major RP nations, most are dead. I've spent a good chunk of my elife on NS, and I will likely spend a good chunk more.

Cause I love you guys.

I love NS, because it allows my Dark Side to Manifest, unihibted by fear of RL retribution. Daily it grows stronger, and I'm beginning to find, I kinda like it.
Good is an excuse of the weak, Law is the Excuse of the cowardly, Chaos, the excuse of the mindless, Evil, the excuse of the pervated and insane. Death is the innevitable and final forgone conclusion of Life. The only true power is Destruction and Decay, and eventually, all things shall cease to exist, even the meaning of nonexistence.

A number of reasons:

Because I love to write.
Because NationStates gives me an oppurtunity to use my imagination and knowledge of facts to tell a story, which I also enjoy.
Because I love to read a good story - look at all the good role-plays out there!
Because I feel it's a good way to spend my free time.
And much, much more. I know there's much, much more, but I can't list them all. Too many, and I can't remember all of them. However, I know there will always be a reason, and I will stay on NS as long as I have the free time to do so and as long as it exists.

I love NationStates because it has given me the ability create a nation of my own that I had been thinking about in my head for years.

One lonely Saturday was all it took for me to sit in front of my computer and think of what my ideal country would be like. I eventually built it up to almost every single detail imaginable... but then I found NationStates.

For a long time I kept on googling different things in a hope of finding a game of this kind - I had no luck, until one day someone on the automotive forum I go posted a thread about NationStates and I was hooked from then on.

I'm so glad that I found it and all the various calculators because now I can have accurate economic statistics based on the population and everything in between. It's incredible.

I like it because its just like the real world. You can govern with your own beliefs, RP & treat it as if it is real. I've always liked this sort of Stuff! It offers challenges!

NS for ever people!

I really love designing and creating a military. Probably my favorite part of the game is desgning new weapons and then marketing them at my storefront. I am an avid businessman and my favorite part of NS has got to be all the business I conduct in this forum. From buying, to selling, to banking! I love it all!

I would like Nationstates because it is the AWSOMEST (I know this isn't a real word) political-real-life scenario game in the world that I have ever found. Probably my favorite part is the fantasy RP's that allow people to alter history in their desirable fashion. WHAT OTHER WEBSITE LETS YOU DO THAT??? Not to mention it's free. :p

NATION STATES ROCKS!!! :)
