The Sarkarasetan War, Part 1: Opening Salvos. (FT/MT, open)

OOC: Basically, this is long-term war between two nations, DLE and Sarkaraseta. People are welcome to join in, but note this will take a few posts before the fighting even gets started.

Also note that the following items will be included among DLE tech or Sarkarasetan tech (and, thus, may be acquired by the other side during battle), but only for the duration of this war. The reasons are that this way works around certain mapability problems and problems with Sarkaraseta's space drives.

Star Gates (both, with ability to teleport ships from orbit for Sarkaraseta) (unique symbol and location system)
ZPMs (Sarkaraseta)
Gate Maps (both) (Sakaraseta and DLE maps only)
Planetary Defenses (Sarkaraseta)

My next post starts the RP. Note the technology and the mark of "open" reflects the fact that other nations can be easily affected by the fighting that happens here.

This topic is now open for posting.

Location: Ruin # 3274c, 3 kilometers inland from the northern coast, island-continent of Terrasot, orbitting the star Vastiva.
Local conditions: It's a rainforest during the rainy season. Guess.

Soybayata sat on the giant mushroom and munched her sandwich quietly. Leutent Manora and Leutenant Foracom were playing Seven Meteor Shuffle, with Foracom being four cards down and soon to lose the game if he didn't find a way to out-think Manora. Major Newbacca, an unfortunate victim of many a joke due to his name sounding like another, was putting his gun together after cleaning it.

These ruins, just a square building with no opening, had not been due for exploration for another two years. They got reassigned to a priority when orbital scans revealed the presense of power inside the ruins. Soybayata's group had been dispatched to investigate and return with the power source ten days ago. Now, they were about ready to return.

The building itself was made of an unknown material, probably quatanium, and had proven to be just a box. The only decoration in the walls was what looked like air vents on the southern side, which is where Soybayata's group was currently resting at. They were currently prevented from attempting to damage the ruin, as previous ruins had included traps for just such occasions.

"I swear, it's almost like we have to say 'Open sesame' to get this building to open the damned door," Soybayata said.

"'Open the damned door.' Password confirmed," came a voice from the building, the entire southern wall silently sliding into the ground.

"You mean we spent nearly two weeks wandering around this piece of moranaka and that was all it took to enter? Damn it!" Newbacca exclaimed, throwing his hands up in frustration.

"Calm down, Chewie. Well, it looks like we go inside," Soybayata said.

The group promptly stood up and, with Soybayata enjoying the dirty look from Newbacca for effectively taking over his command, began to slowly descend into the building. They found the inside consisted of a metal ramp, with grooves in it to give friction, that led down to a large area with a giant metal ring floating above the floor and a control panel several feet in front of the ring. As Soybayata approached, she saw the nine chevrons and symbols, telling her exactly what they had found.

"Just what we need. A damned Star Gate. Nobody touch anything. We don't need this damned thing contacting another one. As rare as these things are, maybe we can auction this one off. Though, I've never seen those symbols before..." she said, seeing the symbols looked more like a form of writing than star constellations.

Then, as if to add to the strangeness, the symbol disk started spinning. Soybayata backed away quickly, watching as the usual seven chevrons lit up. As the "water" of the event horizon pulled it's normal routine, Soybayata turned towards he control panel and glared at Newbacca, who was slowly backing away from it.

"You idiot! Do you know what you've done?! Now we have to obey the secondary orders!" she said.

"Secondary orders?" Newbacca asked.

"First contact, dumbass. Now step into the wormhole," Soybayata said.

Three hours had passed and she was still having trouble believing it. Sarkarasetans from outside of Sarkaraseta? Worse, that they were armed with primitive projectile weaponry and had managed to capture and entire Ring of Worlds facility? She had known for years that the defenses in the Ring of Worlds facilities were lax, but she didn't think they were that lax!

The worst part was the tales of their abilities, as the survivors made it sound like those Sarkarasetans could use magic. The fact such a primitive belief was now cropping up among trained soldiers spoke volumes about the training on both sides. She made a mental note to have all involved in the spread of the tales sent through boot camp again.

"Vice Admiral Torkov. I'm glad you finally made it," a male voice said as she rounded the corner into the Council of Admirals.

"I apologize, Grand Admiral. I was doing some research and ran across something I believe is relevant to this meeting," she replied, bowing lightly.

"Leave it to you to only be late because of putting in extra effort," the Grand Admiral replied, turning back to the group.

"Grand Admiral, what do we label these abilities as? They are not psionic, but show these people are using some kind of unknown energy. The fireball launched at the front door even had a heat signature while it was forming. Our scans revealed them to be completely biological, even if they do have a few unusual genetic mutations. Nothing we know of can explain this," Admiral Chekovsky said, his greying hair shaking with his obvious fear.

"So the rumors of magic are true, then?" she asked.

"It appears so. But let us put that aside for now. Admiral Chekovsky, how would you have us respond to this threat?" the Grand Admiral asked.

"I say we hook four ZPMs together, jump in, and unleash their energy all at once," Chekovsky said.

"And you'll blow up the entire universe if you do it," she replied, shaking her head.

"How do you know that?" Chekovsky asked.

"Because I pay attention to history. The area of space they are in is so mildly warped the warping itself doesn't show up on sensors. That's part of why it is impossible to make maps while inside the place. However, that warping also makes it the universe's largest natural capacitor. During the innitial explorations of the place, Sarkaraset and Sarkaraseta forces fought a minor war there. The war ended when one ship blew up. Instead of the ZPM shutting down, it instead released its energy. The resulting explosion destroyed all of the ships and their ZPMs, in turn, supercharged the entire region. According to the last entry, the region has so much energy in it that ion storms powerful enough to warp space had formed there. Even with the thousands of years that have passed, it's still not that far from having enough energy for a Big Bang. So, please, go ahead and give it enough energy to power fourteen stars. If you want to better know what we're up against, try using the Earth closest to them as a base of operations. Once they see our forces there, this should be over in a week," she said.

"That's nice, except they have space capabilities. We identified their genetic strain as being from a Sarkaraset colony named Terran. The Ring of Worlds they used is hundreds of lightyears away from the planet," Chekovsky replied.

"They used projectile weapons for their soldiers. How advanced can they be?" she asked.

"You mentioned the region is supercharged. Could that account for their abilities?" the Grand Admiral asked.

"Considering how long they have been there? Certainly," she answered.

"Good. Now, we need a plan..." the Grand Admiral began.

OOC: All power figures are overexaggerated.

Enigma wouldn't have believed it if he hadn't seen the Star Gate. He kept thinking to himself that it couldn't possibly be true. There was no way his people were that stupid. And yet, it turned out to be perfectly true. Now, he had to decide what to do about it.

"Let's see if I have this correctly. You managed to find a way into this building through sarcasm, defied direct orders by opening a wormhole when I specifically forbade the activation of any FTL technology, stepped through the wormhole by extending my orders about First Contact being limited to this planet to include any other worlds you can reach, managed to be unable to communicate with those you found, took over a facility, and started an intergalactic war. If you really want my systems to fail, a bullet would be faster. And you specifically knew we were trying to dodge war while dealing with the fuel issue! Do you at least know who you pissed off that I have to send diplomats to?" Enigma asked.

"Yes. From the looks of things, Sarkaraseta," Soybayata said.

Enigma blinked. Then, he stood up off his throne and looked directly in Soybayata's eyes, trying to ascertain whether she was lying. His mind kept refusing to process the information, mimicing a natural mind in its attempts to protect itself.

"You're telling me that the remains of an empire that once built a minigun that fired three kilometer-long aircraft carrier just to see if it would work is what you managed to find and piss off? You had better hope this doesn't result in war. If it does, consider your lives forfeit. Orbez, I need a battle plan and three miracles. I know I normally ask for one and get it, but this situation is more challenging," Enigma said.

"You wanted miracles?" Nergal asked, a hologram of Anubis appearing before the throne.

"Make that four miracles. The fourth is to find Nergal, shove a nuclear missile up his ass, and then detonate it," Enigma said, choosing to speak in English instead of the normal Sarkarasetan.

"Touchy. Have you tried downloading the map from the control consol yet? It may help," Nergal said, vanishing.

"I swear, every time he's helpful, I get the feeling he's about to cause even more trouble. I just don't know to who yet. Soybayata, since you seem to love playing with Star Gates, try checking it for a map. If you accidentally blow yourself up and destroy the Gate, consider it as doing a service for the Empire. Orbez, recall all ships. Have our ships on the other side of the galaxy cross the Core," Enigma said, using Sarkarasetan and switching from one person to another.

"The Core? But the gravimetrics..." Orbez began.

"Look, we don't have time for them to go around. Any moment and we could have an assault fleet arriving in orbit. I need every ship to take the quickest route they can. And if that means the Galactic Core, then do it. Oh, and break out the crazy plans. Conventional tactics are the last thing we need right now. Well, what are you waiting for? Move!"

Getting into the Sol System was easy. A simple use of the Ring of Worlds to get to the asteroid belt, as one was also located there, and then fly past Mars. It was when they got within scanning distance of Earth, however, that the Sarkarasetan ships began to worry.

It was not the massive space fleets in orbit that made them worry. This Earth was in a prime location and seeing it frequented like this was a good sign, as they could blend in. What was a source of worry was the Sarkarasetan ships in orbit, all of which were quite massive and not of designs used by Sarkaraseta. And, unlike expectations, these ships showed signs of having weapons quite advanced. What was worse was the ships in orbit had detected those from Sarkaraseta and were sending what looked like a greeting in the ancient language of English.

The four fighters and colony-ship from Sarkaraseta were no match for such a force. However, these ships showed no sign of hostility, which meant they were not enemies. Or, at least, not yet.

"I may be wrong in this, but these people scan the same as those that attacked our Ring of Worlds facility. Your orders, Captain?" Sub-Captain Nebrowski asked.

"We power the Verrani cannons and attack. If we're lucky, the colony ship will get past them. May the gods have mercy on our souls," Captain Chibowitz said.

The Sarkaraseta fighters began powering their systems, flying straight towards their targets and preparing for the fight.

OOC: The attack on DLE forces in Earth Orbit has begun. Feel free to post.

To whomever deals with such matters, in the esteemed nation of Sakaraseta.
Reports have reached our operatives that certain, 'Magical', abilities have been aquired by your enemy. If your invasion is succesfull, The Principality of Drahken wishes you share all knowledge of these findings. Demands are negotiable, but full compliance will result in long and prosperous relationships between our nations.

"Sir, we've got four tiny ships and what looks like a transport comming in. The tiny ships have armed weapons and all have Sarkarasetan lifesigns. Orders?" Leutent Novaya asked.

"Damn. It's Sarkaraseta. They must not know of our ships here. Let's try to keep the Graviton Destroyer out of this for now. Arm the antimatter missiles. I want to see how many we can take out in one shot," Leutenant-Major Korbana said.

The DLEMB30 turned to face the incomming Sarkaraseta ships, two slots on the bottom of the back of the ship opening. The three-pronged missile launchers lowered, two missiles targetting the transport and the rest each targetting a different fighter. As the missiles launched and extended their wings, thos omboard the ship felt as though the battle was over already, not knowing of a nasty Sarkaraseta surprise until a few seconds later.

"You're not going to like this. The missiles targetting the smaller ships have lost their target locks. Worse, so have we. The energy signatures of the ships have changed. Sir, I think they have some kind of phasic field surrounding the ships. The missiles aimed at them are flying without a target, and by the looks of things all but one are headed towards the asteroid field. The fourth is headed towards Mars," Novaya said.

"Send a communication to Mars and let them know what happened. Tell them there is nothing we can do about the missile and that we will not take it as a hostile action if they destroy it. Now, let's see if we can take down those ships," Korbana said.

"I would advise against that, Leutenant-Major. General Ogana has sent me an override order. Due to their ability to dump our target locks, all ships are to utilize cannons of all types to be rid of this threat. Once the threat is neutralized, we will deal with Mars and let them know what has happened," Galgoran, the AI, said through speakers.

On the map screen, it showed all of the DLE military ships moving into a wall formation, cannons firing as soon as they powered up. Within seconds, only the graviton cannons and Planet Buster, which would presumably not be used, would still be unpowered. Of course, the graviton cannons wouldn't remain unpowered that long...

Korbana sighed, feeling the slight wobble as the disruptor cannons fired. He signalled for fighter preparation, wanting to be ready for if those were launched. He then, smiling, remembered an old poem by Alan Seeger and wondered if this was the forgotten barricade at which he was to have the rendezvous.

At Earth:

The fighters tried their best, firing at the incomming volleys, but it was too late. The antimatter explosion from the colony ship disrupted the shields of the fighters, leaving them open just as the first disruptor shots reached the group. Within a matter of two seconds all that was left was space debris. The fighters had not been a match for the DLE forces.

At Sarkaraseta, 2 hours later:

The Grand Admiral sat perfectly still, watching the scene for the third time. The incomming volleys, the way the ships were easily taken down, and the power of those ships firing. In one fell swoop the entire assumption about these Sarkaraset descendents was destroyed. They did, indeed, possess advanced firepower and obviously quite powerful FTL drives. Worse, it appeared they may have a colony on that Earth, giving them an incentive to protect it.

"I want to know how you plan to work around this setback," the Grand Admiral said.

"Grand Admiral, we need Earth. Without it, we have no way of monitoring the troop movements of our enemy. Sir, I advise sending a destroyer. One backed by some fighters and a couple of missile ships should be more than enough to capture the planet. And to make sure this does not result in another failure, I'll lead the assault force myself," Torkov said.

The Grand Admiral looked around the room, wanting to see objections. But, none were raised. And, though he was loathe to put a destroyer in danger due to how few they had, he nodded his agreement. Then, he dealt with another matter.

To: Lord Fenix, Prince of Drahken
From: Grand Admiral Lennin of Sarkaraseta
Subject: Your offer.

We will gladly accept your offer. We feel any allies at this or future points are needed, as we are new to dealing with the universe once again. Perhaps our relationship will benefit both our nations too greatly for any conflict to result in the future.

"If this day gets any stranger..." Orbez began, looking over the logistics of the defense of Earth against the invading fleet, this time not Sarkarasetan, and trying to see how to get their ships out of there intact.

"It has been strange indeed. First an attack by Sarkaraseta, now an invasion from another galaxy. It only gets worse from here, as we can expect another attack from Sarkaraseta soon. They're going to notice the missing ships quickly. We also need to plan an attack route on Sarkaraseta. Make them fight a two-front war," Enigma said.

"Already planned. As you know, we can use ion storms for power. I have a plan to use a level 10 ion storm to power an FTL jump. The jump will take our ships clear across the galaxy and into their territory. However, it's quite possible the ships will blow up before they have a chance to execute. Once there, though, we have a fuel problem cropping up," Orbez said.

"Why do you say that? We just hit them with everything we've got and move on," Enigma said.

"It's not that simple. The Star Gates themselves are what this version of the Gates use for reference points. The system requires at least six gates to have a line of sight cross with the target. Going by the map we have, we need to disable two in their system. One removes the center world, which I believe is their capital, from being useful. The other makes it impossible for them to simply jump in and fix that gate. Since they are both close to each other and require each other to be used, we'll leave them unable to do anything about it and will be free to strike against their homeworld. It'll require the entire attack fleet to pull off."

"Do it. I want this fight to end quickly. And, while our ships are there, have them try to secure any technology we don't have. Now, let's go back to working on our current problem"

Commander Akhgar Yashar al-Shahab, VAA, Commander of the Tudrussel Platform, was probably the only person aboard the platform who wasn't in a state of deep shock.

The appearance of not one but... lots of alien ships was bad enough.

Whatever they were shooting at each other...

PLEASE ADVISE.

Akhgar watched wordlessly as an explosion many times what he'd seen before engulfed a region of what looked a moment ago like empty space - and spat out bits and pieces of.. well, something.

"ComVet, launch the Larrys. There's junk out there, and maybe it will give us a few answers." if there's time....

In moments, Tudrussel had deployed a cloud of scavenger 'bots, and sent them scurrying towards the debris the battle above them was creating.

"Sir, what happens if someone decides to shoot at us?"
"You do know how to pray, don't you?"
"Well, yes, sir, but... I'm an Athiest."
Akhgar gave him a hard look. "About now, you might want to reconsider that view."

BANDIT BANDIT BANDIT SCRAMBLE ALPHA REPEAT BANDIT BANDIT

Commander Akhgar Yashar al-Shahab, in twenty-five years of air service, had never seen a cloud like that approaching.

“Sir! Targets! Five hun… seven.. nine… eighteen…”
“Forget it, Fahrang, they don’t make numbers that big.” He clicked over his comm. “All stations, brace for impact. Weapons hot, fire at will, repeat, fire at will!”
“All fighters away, repeat, all fighters away, code red repeat code red…”

Untold thousands of – pods? – raced toward NSEarth, definitely on collision courses…

If they’re missiles, we’re f… “Sir, NAFCON report – they’re dense, metal and plastic.”
“LSats, fire at will. Clear away anything headed towards Vastiva or her colonies?”
“What about the rest of the planet?”
“Let them fend for themselves. Fire!”

Dozens of Vastivan LSats, hidden among debris and as normal communications drones broke protective camouflage, sending beam after beam of searing light into the invaders.

And then the swarm was upon them.

Tudrussel’s heavy weapons package fired indiscriminately – with that many targets, “aiming” was unnecessary. Fireballs lit up the heavens as defensive nuclear blasts cleared away potential impacts – EMP pulses killed guidance, direction – particle waves cut deeply – railguns cratered and shattered oncoming drones.

Ground attack droids burned up in the upper atmosphere, fried, melted, shattered…

It was far from enough to destroy the whole; it was enough to umbrella a hole in the swarm.

“Damage report?”
“No impacts, sir! They’re going… around us?”
“Good, we’re not a target, make us a roadblock. South batteries – fire for effect, fire at will.”
“Aye!”

It still wasn’t enough.

Far below, at “Ground Zero-V”, General Riva Sola al-Din gave an order she thought she would never have had to – and hoped she never would again.

“Command – incoming, orbital. Order HARP to fire – clearance graphite six nine two.”
“HARP?”
“You heard me, soldier! Send it!”

A seemingly innocent “polar communications and weather station” – seemingly nothing more then thousands of antennae and posts, miles of fence and mostly empty – screamed its klaxons.

A moment later, the polar ice boiled, hot steam rising into the Antarctic sky – and stormclouds brewed from nothing to scald the heavens.

Mother Nature had joined the fight.

Planes dropped from the heavens, seeking landing anywhere – most succeeded.

Far above, the landmass blotted away, sealed from view in a black flickering cloud of angry hell.
Power beyond reckoning fried and burned pods from the heavens, the troposphere condensed, static lept from foe to foe, indiscriminant in accuracy, devastating in power.

Pieces and junk fell towards the domes and pillars of Vastiva – the fortunes of Winter kept most from any significant damage. More pieces littered the landscape.

Just as suddenly, the swarm was past, eaten, devoured, laid waste.

“Damage report?”
“All sections reporting in…. minor hull breech in hanger three… we’ve lost two R-cannons to overheating… power is out on the lower deck… technicians are deploying a team to upper frame. We can safely assume Osworth is a complete loss. Power reserves are nonexistent, two reactors are on standby.”
“Casualties?”
“We have two YF-100 Glaves reporting in. No escape pod signals.”
Damn. “Others?”
“Minor casualties, mostly bruising and concussions from impact force.”
“Sir? Comm is down. Four hours to repairs.”
“Tell DC to make it two. We need to know what’s going on there.”
“Aye.”

“Sir? We’re getting signals… short range…”
“Who?”
ComVet took long minutes to watch her display. “Larry”
“Larry?”
“Incoming reports from…. Thirty-seven of our Larry scavengers. They are requesting normal pickups.”
“Ops - Do we have the power?”
“Aye, sir. Not to spare, but we have it.”
He pointed. “You two, work together, get them in – get them all in – but don’t risk our people.”
“Aye.”
“Aye.”
“Sir, what if they’re explosives, warheads…”
“Consider it. They’re attached to a moving satellite, doing rudimentary scans. If there were anything that made them go boom, they’d go boom. I’ll risk it.”

OOC: Not my greatest post, but enough for the interception of Cass' ground attack. Will know about the junk I've picked up in a few.

Garbage, debris, flotsam and jetsam - whatever you called it, it had fallen all over Vastiva and the rest of Antarctica.

Most people hadn't noticed. The few who did, either rubbed their heads, or rubbed their hands together - "We're gonna be rich getting paid to clean up this mess!".

Parts and pieces were forwarded to the Ministry of Science and Technology, along with all the sends received from Tudrussel, and anything else anyone else could gleen together.

Twelve hours later, an aide poked his head into the office of Minister Heliat Macaula al-Dayyan's office/lab.
"Eminence? We have shards of what might be a missile casing and some armor fragments."
"And enough junk to fill four rooms. So what?"
"Well, Eminence, these pieces are from DLE. We confirmed it, checking against the formulas given in the book."
There was a stunned silence. Followed by another one.
"Bohze moi!"
