Skager

It had seemed like an eternity since he had looked out through his window, but only a few seconds had passed. He took a moment to wipe the frost off the glass with his sleeve before peering out at the sun as it broke the horizon. The old man slid the window open and drew in a deep, refreshing breath of spring time air. Nature was in bloom and the scents of a new beginning lingered throughout the air, drifting about as the breeze blew then died down.
He tightened his lower lip and smiled contently before walking slowly into out of the Presidential room and into the main hall. His bodyguard greeted him with a nod of the head and a crisp Good morning sir! So far the morning had started off on the right foot, and he raised his right hand and waved to the bodyguard as he passed him by.
It had been many, many long years since President Kaye had bothered to even read an international newspaper, let alone allow himself to become embroiled in the affairs of others. But the news had been good, the economy was on the upswing and the citizens had never been happier, so after a few months of deliberation he had finally caved and decided to go public.
Kaye summed the press to the conference room of the Ivory House, and seemingly within minutes they were set up and waiting for him. The curtains were opened fully to allow the rays of the morning sun in, and light shined brightly off of the chandeliers and filled each room. Kaye had put on his best suit and gave himself a final once over before started off towards the press room. He was a bit nervous to be speaking with the world after all these years, and he doubted anyone would even remember his name.....let alone the legacy that he carved out for himself.
Applause filled the press room as Kaye entered, and he proptly hushed them with a few gentle movements of his hands. The reporters complied and ceased their racket, and a few seconds later the cameras began to roll. Kaye cleared his throat and slowly removed a folded piece of paper from his inside breast pocket. He opened the paper and squinted slightly before reading it aloud.
Friends, brothers, people of Skager. It has been many years since we have let ourselves become involved with the matters of the outside world. For years I have kept Skager and it's people safe through obscurity, and I am confident that we are now at a point where we are able to break the silence and start reaching out towards the larger world that's out there. Granted, the world is a dangerous place, but you who know me know that I would never steer our great and peaceful nation into harm's way.
Therefore, let it be known on this day that the borders of Skager will be open to any and all who are interested in what we have to offer. Skager is a large country, and a land of plenty. I believe that the future is now, and just as the run rises anew, so shall we.
Kaye smiled at the camera, his wrinkled old face still vibrant with youth. He turned towards one of the open windows and listened to the birds chirping as the reporters took down their notes, and with a casual wave of his hand he started off away from the podium. As usual, the press erupted with questions, but Kaye paid them no attention. Today, he would walk through the gardens and plan out just how to bring his vision to life.
