Details:

The Eastern Coalition is the most powerful nation in the Sol System. The Eastern Coalition has just recovered from a long-term and devastating war with the Western Alliance, with casualties running into billions. Despite needing to fund extensive clean-up and reconstruction operations, as well as dealing with starvation and disease, the Coalition has largely recovered and is finally on the up-swing. The economy has suffered somewhat, but the Interim Military Government has begun to stimulate it once again with limited privatisation. The Coalition has colonies on the Moon, Mars, Europa, Io and bases around Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn and Neptune.

The Eastern Coalition does not presently possess faster-than-light capabilities, and none of the humans from this system have ever left the solar system. An expedition of the CS Ramases took humans further than ever before, to the ‘edge’ of the solar system, but they did not leave before being recalled.

At present, the Coalition government is funding two FTL projects.
The 'Warp Jumper' is a mobile, capital ship-mounted technology which opens up a subspace hole, which the ship can generate and travel through at will. However, recent tests proved disastrous as the test ship was crippled for a long period of time, and a subspace tear has been opened, forcing the Coalition government to quarantine the area indefinitely.
The second system, the 'Warp Gate', is a static wormhole generator. Although it has drawbacks (mainly, it is static and requires huge space-based facilities to run), it is proving to be more reliable in small-scale tests, and could be cheaper in the long-term. The government has given the team the go-ahead for the next stages of experimentation.

History

By 2012, The Russian Federation was being consistently hounded by Western nations to reform its democracy. Trade restrictions and even threats of armed incursions were made on a nearly daily basis, and a permanent embargo had been placed upon most of their goods except for oil. In 2034 it very nearly came to full-on nuclear war, as the Russian Premier used quasi-legal political manoeuvres to gain control of several Eastern European nations, forming the Russian Commonweath. Despite the populations of these countries generally having a 60-70% majority in favour of the merger, the West continued to press ever-harder for the Russians to relinquish control of these nations.

With tensions leaning close to war, the Russian Premier turned to China for assistance. By 2036, the People’s Republic of China had become the new world superpower, and was continuing to grow. They had all-but eradicated most of the technological short-falls of their armed forces – and whilst they still lacked the ability to move their entire armed forces, they could move more troops than any other nation on Earth. After some brief talks, China agreed to an alliance between the two countries. Shortly afterwards, Chinese troops, armour and aircraft could be seen in Russian bases along their Western border, and Chinese anti-missile defences were put in place.

The alliance continued to prosper, and Western political attacks diminished considerably. Most trade restrictions were removed, and peace seemed closer than before. Russia and China continued their talks, hoping to develop something more out of their alliance. On July 4th 2056, the two nations announced something quite surprising – they had formed the ‘Eastern Coalition’. The two nations essentially acted as a whole. The Coalition overtook both NATO and the EU overnight in terms of economy and military capabilities. Most Far-East nations (which had mostly been annexed by China some years earlier anyway) and some independent Middle Eastern nations joined the same year, while several Eastern European nations joined the following year.

In 2061, the newly-formed Middle-Eastern Confederacy also joined the Eastern Coalition, along with parts of North Africa which had been annexed by their unified armies. The nations had united together into one cohesive entity in 2018, as the only way for them to survive Western aggression was for them to unite their peoples and resources. In doing this, they also recaptured three Western-conquered nations and ‘liberated’ their peoples. In search of growth, they had also moved beyond Egypt and taken several North African nations.

In 2062, Pakistan successfully defeated India in a fully-fledged war, with China’s assistance. A coalition of Western nations attempted to intervene, but they could not spare the resources to tackle such an overwhelming force. India fell within three years. Although the Indians launched several nuclear missiles at Pakistan as a last-ditch effort to drive them away, Chinese missile defence systems dealt with the antiquated missiles, and only one missile impacted. In 2065, to show their gratitude and to deter retaliatory measures from the West, the Pakistan-India Empire joined the Eastern Coalition.

Right up until 2066 the Coalition had been pushing Japan to join the Coalition. Everything from bribery to threats was used, but Japan’s heart was firmly placed in the West.

Several South American nations joined the Eastern Coalition over the years, in protest at their treatment at the hands of the West more than anything else. Coalition ‘Civil Protection’ teams were immediately deployed, and used some ‘questionable’ methods to begin stemming the flow of illegal activities.

By 2066, the West was extremely concerned by the increasing power of the Eastern-Coalition. In response, NATO was scrapped, and the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, France and Japan became the founding members of the Western Alliance. This too operated as a whole, and directly challenged the Eastern Coalition for power at each opportunity. Over the next ten years, most of Europe, Australia, and parts of Africa joined them. By 2100, both the Eastern Coalition and the Western Alliance appeared to be on a par with each other, though the Eastern Coalition had access to more personnel.

For one hundred years, posturing and technological competition continued without open warfare, until the two powers moved into space. Moon and Mars colonies were the first to go up, and each alliance claimed ownership of different things. The Eastern Coalition claimed Venus and the extensive metal deposits there. The Western Alliance claimed Jupiter and all of its moons, despite never having sent a ship there, though this would cause problems later on.

The first problem came in 2128. The Lunar Conflict was the first official space war between the Alliance and the Coalition. Several early strike carriers on either side met in orbit of the Moon. Each side wanted to claim full ownership of the small rock, to propel their missions into space. Neither side was prepared to yield. Nearly 200 years of pent-up tensions exploded simultaneously in what was one of the bloodiest short-term wars of all human history. Carriers were destroyed and more came, with cruiser reinforcements. Ground forces were landed by both sides on the Moon’s surface to try and discretely take control of the world whilst the battle raged above. But both sides clashed there too, and there were civilian casualties.

The Lunar Conflict ended in 2130, with both sides signing territorial agreements in one of few neutral nations left on Earth – Switzerland. Peace was maintained for several decades, with little more than colonial conflicts disturbing it. Still, the tensions remained, and the Lunar Conflict had given the Western Coalition an economical advantage that they were eager to exploit at every opportunity.

The more recent Europa Conflict of 2151 was inevitable. The Western Alliance had begun colonising two of the moons of Jupiter, with their key colony being Base Kennedy on Europa. The short war lasted for only one year, and was a decisive victory for the Alliance. The Coalition simply could not field ships at such an extreme range, when the Alliance had two bases in the same area. Without a foothold, the Coalition stood little chance. They began to focus on colonies further away, such as building bases in orbit of Neptune, and settling on some less-desirable moons of Saturn.

The very recent Great Sol War replaced World War Two as the most brutal conflict in their history. It was all begun by a plan seven years in the making. Admiral Kulov was the mastermind of the whole plan.

The Coalition called upon the Alliance to end many centuries of hostility between their member nations. After several years of intense negotiations and concessions, the two powers agreed to sign the ‘Balma Treaty’. The Coalition heralded the so-called ‘Balma Treaty’ as the first, and best, hope for peace for all humanity, and truly convinced the Alliance that they wanted peace. As a show of their good faith, the Coalition were even prepared to meet on Europa to sign the treaty – the place where they had been defeated so decisively nine years earlier.

Admiral Kulov’s flagship arrived at Europa, apparently alone, and entered orbit of the small moon. Alliance fleets were standing down across Sol, as agreed previously. Coalition fleets appeared to do the same, although a mysterious increase in what appeared to be pirate activity was noted by Alliance fleets.
Just as an Alliance fighter went up to escort Kulov to Base Kennedy to sign the treaty, hundreds of prototype Basilisk fighters appeared from nowhere. The Coalition was demonstrating its latest technological innovation on a grand scale – cloaking technology. The new class of medium fighters decloaked and laid waste to Europa in a surprise attack with support from the orbiting dreadnought.
Simultaneous to the attack on Europa, both the French and Italian fleets were obliterated in similar surprise attacks while they were standing down near Mars. Shortly afterwards, the Spanish, Canadian and Australian fleets were destroyed. By the time the Coalition forces located and engaged the remaining fleets, however, Alliance forces had discovered the plan and were mobilised.

The Alliance were heavily damaged; outnumbered and outgunned, they withdrew their forces to Neptune, in an endeavour known as ‘Operation: Shield’. Alliance forces protected merchant fleets as they followed with supplies. Once the Alliance had rescued all that they could, they began a counter-offensive.

For a time, it seemed that they were actually successful. Coalition and Alliance forces were neck-and-neck, and the Alliance managed to push their way right back to Saturn, destroying a Coalition experimental ion cannon platform codenamed ‘Dark Reign’ in the process. Some Alliance forces even made it to Europa, but at that time Europa was a Coalition stronghold, and they could not break through.

For five years, a devastating war was fought to a stalemate. The Alliance had begun using the shipyards and mines acquired when they gained Saturn and its moons to effectively construct fleets of small vessels quickly. Although they were insufficient to mount any sort of offensive action, they did hold back Coalition strikes for a time.

By 2169, however, the Alliance was worn down. In a completely unprecedented move, Alliance carriers actually began ramming Coalition colonies, in response to alleged ‘barbarism’ on ex-Alliance colonies at the hands of the Coalition. Earth even sustained several direct hits from the massive craft, devastating the planet and causing the deaths of billions.

By the time the Alliance had finished their kamikaze campaign, almost 7 billion people had died as a result of the war, and both of their economies were crippled. The Coalition still had a handful of ships left, however, and used them. Their big-hitters had survived, and they strategically eliminated the few remaining Alliance battlegroups before hitting their bases. By early 2170, the Coalition controlled the whole system.

The war officially ended several months later (see this thread (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=388484)). Ivan Petrov, Commander in the Navy and leader of the ace fighter squadron ‘The Black Guard’, located one remaining Alliance base in Sol’s asteroid belt. By tracing the course of an Alliance Prowler, a small class of gunship, he found a mining base in the asteroid belt. The CS Ramases, the only carrier that was still intact, moved in to engage the asteroid base.

The ANS Washington, a Class 1 Alliance Strike Carrier, was also discovered before the Ramases could change course, however. Apart from engine damage, the massive strike carrier was still operative, and it engaged the surprised Ramases. A brutal fighter battle took place, but with the assistance of Commander Petrol, the Ramases successfully neutralised the Washington’s defences and hit her with bombers. The asteroid base followed shortly afterwards.

On December 17th, 2170, Admiral Kulov announced that the war was over, and that the ‘evil’ Western Alliance had been defeated. The cost was enormous, however. Nearly every colony was in a state of ruin, with starvation rampant on every settled world. The Coalition reverted to communism, an economic ideal that had been present in both the main nations of the Coalition at some point in history, and slowly rebuilt the economy from only 100 million people.

At present, 2201, the economy has stabilised in a relatively strong state, though it is not growing very fast. Progressive social policies have largely stemmed the massive food and heathcare crises, and the population of just over 500 million survivors has grown to a much healthier 2 billion, although their quality of life is still not spectacular. The primary goals of the Coalition’s temporary military leadership are now to rebuild Earth and the colonies. With the military fleet now up to a satisfactory strength, shipyards were turned to the task of constructing civilian merchantmen to re-establish supply lines.

A project to put humans outside of the solar system is also underway, with several projects currently showing signs of success. The ‘Warp Gate’ project is currently considered the most promising by Coalition command, and has been given their support in the form of funding. A form of travel, known as a ‘warp jump drive’, was recently tested with dire results. Research continues.

It is expected that a sleeper ship launched some 40 years prior to this date should be arriving at its destination at this time, at a star system approximately 14 lightyears away from Sol. No communication is expected for the time being due to the extreme distance.

OOC: This is all unknown to all, unless you TG me with ways they could meet other nations. They do not presently have FTL. This FB is in preparation for them doing more stuff over the next few NS years.
BTW; any reference to 'Sol' is speaking of what you may as well call a 'mirror' Sol on the opposite side of the galaxy. Identical in every way to our own solar system, only its history is skewed off at a certain point (around 2005, if you want). Call it a transdimensional temporal anomaly or whatever, but as you can tell from the rather long history it's an unfortunate necessity to give them the run of the system. It doesn't exactly give any advantages, seeing as I killed off the majority of the population and consumed vast quantities of resources in the process. But if any have problems with this, feel free to ignore me.

Coalition Strike Carriers

The Strike Carrier is a hybrid of ship types; the punishing power of a battleship combined with the power projection of a carrier. This multi-role platform has been a key tool by both the Alliance and the Coalition in all their engagements since their initial conception. Fully capable of engaging other capital ships in battle, they also function as a home base to fighter squadrons.

CS Pukov

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v248/MattLever/Eastern%20Coalition/cs_pukov.jpg

Commissioned: 2159
Type: Class 1 Strike Carrier
Displacement: 2,250,000 tons
Propulsion: Mass Ion Drive
Fighters: 135-150
Armament: 35 dual-fire railgun turrets, 3 DU flak turrets, 12 torpedo tubes
Crew: 1404

The CS Pukov is the sister ship of the CS Varyag, and both represent the current pinnacle of Coalition technology, including the mass ion drive, which allows for far more efficient travel over long distances. Besting even the most powerful Alliance carriers during the war, the CS Pukov and her infamous fighter squadron the Black Guard have a rich and successful service history. The Pukov herself is honoured with defeating several of the best Alliance carriers; including the ANS Bremen, the ANS Yamato (both modern Class 1 Strike Carriers) and several French and Italian carriers at the start of the war.
The CS Pukov is slightly more heavily armed than her sister ship, and is currently the Flagship of the First Coalition Fleet as well as being the flagship of the Coalition.

CS Varyag

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v248/MattLever/Eastern%20Coalition/cs_varyag.jpg

Commissioned: 2159
Type: Class 1 Strike Carrier
Displacement: 2,250,000 tons
Propulsion: Mass Ion Drive
Fighters: 135-150
Armament: 35 dual-fire railgun turrets, 2 DU flak turrets, 12 torpedo tubes
Crew: 1395

The sister ship of the CS Pukov, the CS Varyag boasts the same advanced technologies and is the Flagship of the Second Coalition Fleet. Though her service record is not quite as dazzling as the CS Pukov, the Varyag is still a well-respected carrier, with her on-board squadron, the Black Sun, always vying for a better reputation than their sister-squadron, the Black Guard.
The CS Varyag was responsible for the destruction of the ANS Endeavour (a fairly modern Class 1 Strike Carrier), countless merchant fleets and converted civilian bases, Kestral destroyer fleets and fighters, while she was stationed on a defensive post for the latter part of the war.

CS Krasnaya

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v248/MattLever/Eastern%20Coalition/cs_krasnaya.jpg

Commissioned: 2085
Type: Class 2 Strike Carrier
Displacement: 1,605,000 tons
Propulsion: Ion Drive
Fighters: 90-120
Armament: 25 dual-fire railgun turrets, 2 DU flak turrets, 8 torpedo tubes
Crew: 1389

The CS Krasnaya, Flagship of the Third Coalition Fleet, and her sister-ship the CS Kozlov are the oldest carriers still in operation, and they were older than all Alliance carriers during the war as well. Regardless of this, the spaceframe of the Krasnaya/Kozlov was sound, and so they were refit in the run-up to war with more modern technology and better armour plating. When the two were built in 2085, they were the largest ships ever commissioned in Sol, and were classified as ‘supercarriers’. In modern times they have been reclassified as Class 2 Strike Carriers, though they are still quite large in comparison to some other carriers.

The Krasnaya is the most successful carrier in Coalition history, even more so than the Pukov. Whilst her age is such that this is no surprise, the fact that such an old carrier managed to destroy Class 1 Alliance Strike Carriers in the Great Sol War is very unusual, and a testament to her crew’s skill. She was also present at both the Lunar and Europa conflicts, where she scored massive hits. The ANS Victorious (Class 1) and the ANS Reliant (Class 4) are just two of her most recent victories.

CS Kozlov

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v248/MattLever/Eastern%20Coalition/cs_kozlov.jpg

Commissioned: 2085
Type: Class 2 Strike Carrier
Displacement: 1,605,000 tons
Propulsion: Ion Drive
Fighters: 90-120
Armament: 25 dual-fire railgun turrets, 2 DU flak turrets, 8 torpedo tubes
Crew: 1380

Sister-ship to the CS Krasnaya, the CS Kozlov is the third-most successful carrier in operation in the Coalition Navy, and the joint-oldest. It is the Flagship of the Fourth Coalition Fleet.

The Kozlov was stationed in the same battlegroup as the Krasnaya in both the Lunar and Europa conflicts, and for half of the Great Sol War. After that she was sent on solo missions, where her fighter squadron the Red Guard made impressive progress.

CS Ramases

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v248/MattLever/Eastern%20Coalition/cs_ramases.jpg

Commissioned: 2150
Type: Class 2 Strike Carrier
Displacement: 1,815,000 tons
Propulsion: Ion Drive
Fighters: 96-126
Armament: 27 dual-fire railgun turrets, 1 DU flak turret, 8 torpedo tubes
Crew: 1431

The CS Ramases is one of only two Middle-Eastern Confederacy ships serving in the Coalition Navy. It was commissioned a decade before the Great Sol War, and as such it was fairly new and technologically sophisticated. Unfortunately, the CS Ramases and her base squadron the Saracens were on an extended scientific mission when war broke out, trying to reach the edge of the solar system. They returned just in time to see the end of the war – the sight of a fresh, combat-ready, sophisticated Strike Carrier was a welcome sight to the Coalition indeed, but it was too little, too late. Upon arrival, however, she and her onboard squadron the Saracens participated in the destruction of the ANS Washington (Class 1) along with members of the Black Guard fighter squadron flying out of the CS Pukov. Due to this last-minute and wholly decisive victory, the Ramases has been made Flagship of the Fifth Fleet.

CS Kozah

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v248/MattLever/Eastern%20Coalition/cs_kozah.jpg

Commissioned: 2150
Type: Class 2 Strike Carrier
Displacement: 1,815,000 tons
Propulsion: Ion Drive
Fighters: 96-126
Armament: 27 dual-fire railgun turrets, 1 DU flak turret, 8 torpedo tubes
Crew: 1431

The CS Kozah is Flagship of the Sixth Coalition Fleet, and is the sister-ship of the CS Ramases. Unlike the Ramases, the Kozah saw extensive action in the Great Sol War and chalked up some impressive kills, although a close encounter with the massive ANS Yamato (Class 1) almost destroyed her. The CS Pukov jumped in at the last minute and covered her retreat. She has been in repairs since that date, and has only recently been reassigned to the Sixth Fleet.

CS Krasny

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v248/MattLever/Eastern%20Coalition/cs_krasny.jpg

Commissioned: 2155
Type: Class 3 Strike Carrier
Displacement: 1,560,000 tons
Propulsion: Mass Ion Drive
Fighters: 90-120
Armament: 15 dual-fire railgun turrets, 1 DU flak turret, 4 torpedo tubes
Crew: 1257

The CS Krasny has several sister-ships, all designed to fill a certain niche in the Strike Carrier class. The Krasny is not much more powerful than a cruiser, though she holds four times as many fighters. Though her power is limited, she and others like her were the backbone of the Coalition Navy in the darkest hours of the Great Sol War; small and easy to build, almost like a cruiser, yet well-armed enough to hold its own in a fight, most shipyards were producing these in great numbers.

The CS Krasny is the Flagship of the recently-formed Seventh Coalition Fleet, as a show of respect to the surprising record she achieved in the war. Avoiding any serious damage or encounters with larger carriers, the Krasny was key in disrupting Alliance shipping lanes between Saturn and Neptune.

Coalition Capital Ships & Support Craft

In addition to the heavy-hitting Strike Carriers, the Coalition also maintains a sizable fleet of cruisers and other support craft.

Class 2 ‘Cyclone’-class Cruiser

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v248/MattLever/Eastern%20Coalition/cs_yevstafiy.jpg

Commissioned: 2159
Type: Class 2 Cruiser
Displacement: 696,000 tons
Propulsion: Ion Drive
Fighters: 15
Armament: 10 dual-fire railgun turrets, 1 DU flak turret, 2 torpedo tubes
Crew: 480

The Cyclone-class cruiser is the newest in a line of dedicated fighting vessels. Although they carry fighters, it is not capable of the same level of power projection as a Strike Carrier; these fighters are intended for self-defence only, and could not wage an offensive without fighter support from several other cruisers or a Strike Carrier.

The primary role of the Cyclone class of cruiser is to augment a fleet. They are capable of engaging capital ships of their own size, but must outnumber a larger vessel such as a Strike Carrier. Cruisers are highly vulnerable to bombers and torpedo hits, and hence are only deployed on solo-missions against low-level targets.

The Cyclone-class has a relatively new ‘external hangar’ system. Fighters literally hook themselves to the forward ‘spine’, where small airlocks connect to the underbelly access points. This saves on internal space and allows the vessel to use standard, high-yield torpedo tubes. It also allows it to hold more fighters than its size would otherwise permit. However, fighters docked in this fashion are generally more vulnerable to damage.

Class 2 ‘Tornado’-class Cruiser

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v248/MattLever/Eastern%20Coalition/cs_morzov.jpg

Commissioned: 2108
Type: Class 2 Cruiser
Displacement: 750,000 tons
Propulsion: Ion Drive
Fighters: 10
Armament: 10 dual-fire railgun turrets, 1 DU flak turret, 1 multi-launch torpedo system
Crew: 1257

The Tornado-class cruiser is an older cruiser model, which has ended production. Still, at the time of construction the Tornado was more of a low-level carrier than anything else, and as such people have criticised the Cyclone-class for not being a step forwards.

Due to its small size when compared to cruisers, and the internal hangar deck which was necessary at the time, the Morzov severely lacks internal space. Thus instead of utilising standard torpedo bays, a new system was installed; torpedoes are all launched from one, internal turret. The torpedoes can be launched in volleys of five, and exit the vessel through the forward hangar. This means that the vessel can only use medium-yield torpedoes, and cannot fire when fighters are landing or taking off.

Berijev

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v248/MattLever/Eastern%20Coalition/Berijev.jpg

Commissioned: 2154
Type: Command Ship
Displacement: 465,000 tons
Propulsion: Ion Drive
Fighters: N/A
Armament: 7 dual-fire railgun turrets
Crew: 447

The Berijev Command Ship is a unique class of vessel. It incorporates extremely powerful and advanced sets of sensors and communications systems, which have vastly improved ranges over other capital ships. Berijevs are present in all fleets, and typically coordinate extreme-range fighter operations. They are lightly armed, however.

Kurgen

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v248/MattLever/Eastern%20Coalition/kurgen.jpg

Commissioned: 2152
Type: Corvette
Displacement: 2,940 tons
Propulsion: Ion Drive
Fighters: N/A
Armament: 2 dual-fire railgun turrets, 1 multi-missile launcher (4x capacity), 2 single-use torpedo launchers
Crew: 59

The Kurgen is primarily used for convoy defence and carrier protection, though it is frequently employed alongside fighters to offer increased firepower, as well as being deployed on solo patrol missions in times of peace. The Kurgen has two one-use torpedo launchers. Although full-yield, as with a bomber they require reloading by a carrier after use. She also has an anti-fighter missile launching system mounted on the front, which is capable of loading and firing many types of AF missiles.

The Kurgen has a reinforced structural integrity and a hardened nose, which allows it to ram capital ships in last-ditch attacks.

Scarab

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v248/MattLever/Eastern%20Coalition/scarab.jpg

Commissioned: 2154
Type: Troop Transport
Displacement: 2,400 tons
Propulsion: Ion Drive
Fighters: N/A
Armament: 2 dual-fire shell turrets
Crew: 18

Scarab-class Troop Transports are little more than metal skeletons with a command section and engines. Six drop pods are fitted to the skeletal frame, each containing up to 500 troops. This allows for them to be deployed from orbit, and carried from a fleet to their destination. The only problem is that Scarabs and their pods are highly vulnerable to fighter attack, and as such rarely travel without an escort.

Antonov

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v248/MattLever/Eastern%20Coalition/Antonov.jpg

Commissioned: 2157
Type: Search / Rescue / Refuel & Resupply
Displacement: 750 tons
Propulsion: Ion Drive
Fighters: N/A
Armament: 1 dual-fire shell turret
Crew: 6

The Antonov is a search and rescue craft, capable of holding multiple escape pods for return to a carrier group. Often deployed after heated fighter battles, or into the wreckage of a carrier, to locate and rescue survivors. The Antonov is highly vulnerable when doing this, as it needs to come to a complete halt and divert all power to sophisticated tractor beams, and as such is never deployed without fighter cover.

The Antonov can also be used to offer field refuelling and rearming to fighters and bombers without the need for them to return to base.

Coalition Space Superiority Fighters

The notion of a Strike Carrier is useless if it doesn’t have any craft to carry, and the chances of smaller ships such as Scarabs and cargo ships getting to where they are going without a fighter escort are quite low.

Coalition fighters vary in size and purpose; the lightest ones are nimble and fast, whilst the heaviest ones possess punishing firepower but not so much manoeuvrability.

For these purposes, a rating system will be used to give a better idea of how the fighters compare to each other, as the differences are not so obvious with technical descriptions.

All fighters use a complicated mix of ceramics and metals for armour, which are capable of resisting moderate amounts of damage from low-yield weapons. Technically there is not much of a significant difference between them all, hence the need for a rating system to compare. Due to the fact that these fighters are also atmospheric fighters, this armour has to remain light and streamlined.
Fighter speeds range from 250 kilometers per second to 470kps.

“Azan” Light Fighter

Type: Light Fighter
Speed Rating: 6
Acceleration Rating: 7
Armour Rating: 3
Agility Rating: 5
Armaments: 2 gauss cannons, 2 shell cannons, 2 missile hardpoints
Crew: 1
Misc. Information: 100 seconds afterburner fuel, anti-missile countermeasures

The Azan is an old and basic light fighter. Most novice pilots will be given an Azan as their first bird. Although old, and not quite as manoeuvrable as some newer light fighters, the Azan does have a surprising amount of firepower for a light fighter.

“Basilisk” Medium Fighter

Type: Medium Fighter
Speed Rating: 6
Acceleration Rating: 5
Armour Rating: 7
Agility Rating: 10
Armaments: 2 railguns, 2 shell cannons, 2 rear gauss cannons, 5 missile hardpoints
Crew: 2
Misc. Information: 60 seconds afterburner fuel, prototype cloaking device, computer-assisted targeting systems, spectral shielding technology, reverse thrust, anti-missile countermeasures

The Basilisk is the newest type of fighter currently in service in the Coalition Navy. It was first brought into service in the Great Sol War, where it quickly earned a reputation as a vicious, durable and agile fighter. Equipped with a revolutionary cloaking device, which renders the craft partially invisible to the naked eye (a very faint, translucent blue ‘ghost ship’ can be seen at close range) and totally invisible to long-range sensors and weapons targeting systems, the Basilisk was an invaluable tool in information gathering, covert and surprise attack operations. It also has modern, heavy armour. If it weren’t for the agility afforded to it by the new types of manoeuvring jets, it would be classed as a heavy fighter.
The Basilisk has only recently shaken off the ‘prototype’ label, and is only awarded to ace fighter squadrons such as the Black Guard, who now use the Basilisk exclusively.

“Haidar” Medium Fighter

Type: Medium Fighter
Speed Rating: 4
Acceleration Rating: 7
Armour Rating: 8
Agility Rating: 5
Armaments: 2 gauss cannons, twin railguns, rear gauss cannon, 3 missile hardpoints
Crew: 2
Misc. Information: 100 seconds afterburner fuel, computer-assisted targeting systems, reverse thrust, anti-missile countermeasures

The Haidar is a popular, modern medium fighter, in use by multiple fighter squadrons across the Navy and on most planetary facilities.

“Karak” Medium Fighter

Type: Medium Fighter
Speed Rating: 4
Acceleration Rating: 7
Armour Rating: 6
Agility Rating: 5
Armaments: 2 gauss cannons, 2 shell cannons, rear gauss cannons, 4 missile hardpoints
Crew: 2
Misc. Information: 100 seconds afterburner fuel, reverse thrust

The Karak is a rare sight in the Coalition, due in part to the fact that it is not quite as versatile as the Haidar. It is still a potent fighter, however, and some pilots choose it over the Haidar due to the extra missile hardpoint.

“Cossack” Heavy Fighter

Type: Heavy Fighter
Speed Rating: 6
Acceleration Rating: 7
Armour Rating: 10
Agility Rating: 3
Armaments: 2 collapser cannons, 2 gauss lasers, rear facing twin gauss cannon, 6 missile hardpoints
Crew: 3
Misc. Information: 100 seconds afterburner fuel, spectral shielding technology

The Cossack is a heavy fighter, with powerful weapons and substantial armour. It lacks agility, however, but it makes up for this with powerful rear weapons. The Cossack is the primary heavy fighter of the Coalition Navy.

“Lagg” Medium Fighter

Type: Medium Fighter
Speed Rating: 6
Acceleration Rating: 7
Armour Rating: 7
Agility Rating: 5
Armaments: 2 gattling cannon, 2 gauss cannons, 2 shell cannons, twin rear gauss cannon, 4 missile hardpoints
Crew: 2
Misc. Information: 100 seconds afterburner fuel

The Lagg is a rare medium fighter due to its poor agility, but its redeeming factors are exceptional armour and weaponry for a fighter of this level.

“Sabre” Medium Fighter

Type: Medium Fighter
Speed Rating: 6
Acceleration Rating: 7
Armour Rating: 6
Agility Rating: 6
Armaments: 2 gauss cannons, 2 shell blasters, rear gauss cannon, 4 missile hardpoints
Crew: 2
Misc. Information: 100 seconds afterburner fuel

The Sabre is the primary fighter of the entire Coalition. It has a perfect balance between armour, weaponry and agility, which makes it the ideal choice for fighter pilots of all level of skill. Add to this the fact that it is relatively small, easy to construct and easy to maintain and it only becomes even more desirable. Sabres are more numerous than all the other fighters combined, and have seen extensive combat in the Europa Conflict and the Great Sol War.

“Salin” Light Fighter

Type: Light Fighter
Speed Rating: 8
Acceleration Rating: 7
Armour Rating: 4
Agility Rating: 9
Armaments: 2 gauss cannons, 2 gattling cannons, rear gauss cannon, 2 missile hardpoints
Crew: 2
Misc. Information: 120 seconds afterburner fuel, reverse thrust

The Salin is the primary light fighter of the fleet, and is the choice of many because of its extremely high agility rating. The Salin, despite its modest armour, can dominate a dogfight simply because of its agility and speed. The only fighter which comes close to matching it is the Basilisk.

“Saracen” Medium Fighter

Type: Medium Fighter
Speed Rating: 3
Acceleration Rating: 10
Armour Rating: 5
Agility Rating: 3
Armaments: 2 gauss cannons, 2 shell cannons, 2 rear facing shell cannons, 5 missile hardpoints
Crew: 2
Misc. Information: 100 seconds afterburner fuel

The Saracen is a largely obsolete fighter, with limited manoeuvrability and armour. Its acceleration is impressive, but as it does not reach particularly high speeds this isn’t much use to most pilots. The only real saving grace of the Saracen is its weapons, though it is so sluggish in battle that it is unlikely to put them to use. The Saracen only remains in service due to the shortage of fighters during and immediately after the Great Sol War.

Coalition Torpedo Bombers / Shuttles

The power projection capabilities of a Strike Carrier would be pointless if the Carrier had to jump in and directly engage other capital ships in every battle. Thus, it has torpedo bombers to do this job for it.

Kamov Torpedo Bomber

Commissioned: 2159
Type: Torpedo Bomber
Displacement: 90 tons
Propulsion: Ion Drive
Fighters: N/A
Armament: 1 gauss turret, 4 torpedo launchers
Crew: 3

The Kamov is a heavy torpedo launcher, capable of holding and firing four standard, high-yield, anti-capital ship, daranium tipped nuclear torpedoes. The Kamov cannot hold any more than four torpedoes, thus after deploying its salvo, it must return to its base ship for refuelling and rearming. As such, Kamovs are rarely deployed alone. Nor are they deployed without fighter assistance.
When a Kamov squadron (usually known as ‘Gamma Squad’ by most carrier crews) engages a capital ship/fleet of capital ships, it will usually follow a simple but highly effective strategy. The fighters and Kamovs will jump to a safe location within jump range of their target. The fighters will jump ahead and engage the target, softening/destroying their defences. Once they are confident that the area is secure, and the capital ship cannot destroy the torpedoes before they hit, they will call in ‘Gamma Squad’. The Kamov bombers will jump in and fire their salvo, then jump out again. The fighters will remain to ensure the torpedoes hit, before following the Kamovs back to base.

Scimitar Torpedo Bomber

Commissioned: 2147
Type: Torpedo Bomber
Displacement: 150 tons
Propulsion: Ion Drive
Fighters: N/A
Armament: 4 gauss turrets, 2 torpedo launchers
Crew: 2

The Scimitar is an aging torpedo bomber, capable of holding only two torpedoes. Its obsolete firing mechanism makes it much larger and less capable than the Kamov, and is gradually being phased out of service.

Kalan Shuttle

Commissioned: 2153
Type: Transport Shuttle
Displacement: 220 tons
Propulsion: Ion Drive
Fighters: N/A
Armament: 2 gauss turrets
Crew: 6

The Kalan is a standard transport shuttle, used to ferry middle-ranking officers to any location in Sol. It is lightly armed, and rarely deployed without heavy fighter escort.

Yakob Shuttle

Commissioned: 2156
Type: Troop Transport
Displacement: 250 tons
Propulsion: Ion Drive
Fighters: N/A
Armament: 4 single-fire railgun turrets
Crew: 6

The Yakob is a far more modular design than the Kalan, and more heavily armed (though still vulnerable). Sometimes used to ferry important cargo, other times used to move high ranking officers, the interior of a Yakob can look like a cargo container or a palace, depending on its mission.

Civilian Vessels

The Coalition, as all other powers, has a civilian sector which makes the economy work. During the Great Sol War, however, the Coalition Navy saw need to conscript several civilian classes of vessels into the fleet.

Gurevich Cargo Carrier

Commissioned: 2157
Type: Light Cargo Carrier
Displacement: 255,000 tons
Propulsion: Ion Drive
Fighters: N/A
Armament: 4 railgun turrets
Crew: 29

The Gurevich is a small cargo carrier, capable of holding four standard-sized cargo containers. Although not as high-capacity as the significantly larger Shavrov, one could argue that the cargo is better-protected; rather than being attached to a long ‘spine’ and easy to shoot at, cargo containers on the Gurevich are tucked neatly into the middle.

Shavrov Cargo Carrier

Commissioned: 2147
Type: Heavy Cargo Carrier
Displacement: 495,000 tons
Propulsion: Ion Drive
Fighters: N/A
Armament: 8 single-fire railgun turrets
Crew: 59

The Shavrov is a monstrous cargo carrier, capable of holding 17 standard cargo containers along its dual ‘spines’. Longer than some carriers, the Shavrov is a huge vessel, and is moderately armed.

Riza Science Vessel

Commissioned: 2155
Type: Mobile Science Research Platform
Displacement: 9,000 tons
Propulsion: Ion Drive
Fighters: N/A
Armament: 2 single-fire railgun turrets
Crew: 18

The Riza-class is a highly sophisticated science vessel. The primary function of the Riza is to explore space, and is capable of analysing in detail any natural phenomenon ranging from an asteroid to a black hole. It can also prove useful in detecting artificial objects, and perhaps even deducing what happened from nothing more than wreckage. The Riza is also home to various laboratories. As well as that, its powerful sensors exceed that of even a Berijev Command Ship, and as such it was quickly drafted into military service for the Great Sol War.

Coalition Ammunition

Warships of the Coalition use a variety of weaponry. Whilst the low-power energy weapons of fighter craft are ideal for dog fighting and attacking external targets of a capital ship, the larger capital ships require much heavier weaponry.

Dual-Fire Railgun Turret

The railgun turret is a mid-yield kinetic weapon, ideal for destroying fast-moving targets such as fighters and light cruisers, as well as dealing moderate damage to a frigate or a light cruiser. Most capital ships have total, 360-degree coverage of railgun fire, leaving few or no blindspots.

Each turret utilises two separate ammunition magazines and two separate firing mechanisms, allowing it to fire at an extremely high rate. A combination of liquid cooling, advanced heat-resistant construction and room temperature superconductors are used to maintain optimal temperature. Although obviously not light-based, the projectiles travel fast enough to hit virtually anything.

Magazines are located beneath the ship's armour, which can cause initial loadtimes to be slow, but allows for easy replacement of depleted magazines by automated systems. Each magazine holds 2,000 rounds, which allows for 4,000 rounds to be deployed by each turret in a single engagement. Although the standard round is a tungsten rod, depleted uranium is often used as well.

Torpedoes

Torpedoes, as deployed from capital ships and torpedo bombers, are largely designed to be effective against other capital ships. They can be fitted with numerous warheads for numerous purposes.

Nuclear Anti-Cap Torpedo - this is a standard nuclear fusion warhead with yields ranging from 40mts to 150mts, depending on the armour of the target. These are most commonly used in ship-to-ship engagements.
Daranium-Enhanced Nuclear Anti-Cap Torpedo - this is a nuclear fusion warhead which has been enhanced and focused with small amounts of a rare substance called daranium. This substance accelerates fusion and can increase the power output by up to 25%, depending on purity. This has the effect of making the nuclear blast focused and far more devastating, and it is also safer to use. Only ships of the line are equipped with a handful of these experimental weapons, due in part to the rarity of daranium.
Standard Explosive Warhead - using an advanced form of plastic explosives, this puts out a .9kt explosion and is ideal for destroying small, Kurgen-like targets.
EMP Warhead - on detonation, this device puts out a powerful EMP pulse. While capital ships are armoured against EMP, fighter systems can be interrupted.
Cluster Warhead - a standard-sized warhead which contains numerous smaller, semi-guided torpedoes armed with conventional explosives. These are usually used to disperse large numbers of fighters, though they can also be used to cripple multiple systems on a capital ship in one strike.
Ionic Pulse Warhead - on detonation, a specific type of ions are released on mass, which severely interfere with enemy jump drives, allowing for an emergency escape/mid-jump ambush.

Depleted Uranium Plasma Flak Turret

Hurling a large (700mm) shell-shaped chunk of depleted uranium (sometimes tungsten is used, but usually depleted uranium) encased in superheated plasma (normally by-product of Coalition ion drive power systems), the flak turret is a devastating weapon against capital ships. Although the slug is too slow to hit smaller, faster craft such as fighters and Kurgens, it can quite easily impact with the substantial frame of a Strike Carrier or a cruiser. The result of so much raw kinetic energy is enough to send ripples through even the most heavily-armoured hull, whilst the white hot plasma weakens armour and causes some degree of splash damage.
Due to the size and hazardous nature of the flak turret's ammunition, each turret's magazine is limited only to a few dozen rounds.

Point-Defence Laser System (PDLS)

The PDLS is a defensive technology implemented on most modern capital ships. Using a series of high-powered laser emitters, the PDLS protects the capital ship from incoming missiles and shells by harmlessly destroying them before impact. It can also heat incoming projectiles to the point where they are less effective. Due to the computer-intensive nature of this task, the PDLS requires its own dedicated computer core.

On all capital ships except for the Cyclone-class cruiser, the PDLS provides complete, 360-degree coverage. It has a 50% success rating on average -- higher against low quantities of incoming projectiles, lower against large numbers.

Ion Cannon

A relatively new technology, this weapon fires a constant beam of ionised energy at its target. This has the effect of overloading enemy power systems, and can destroy some ships in a single shot simply by overloading their electrical components.

At present, Coalition ion cannon technology is limited to two huge orbital defensive platforms; one in orbit of Earth, another in orbit of Saturn. There was a third (which was, incidentally, the first) which also orbited Saturn, but this was destroyed by the Western Alliance during the Great Sol War, and as of yet no plans have been made for its reconstruction. Rumours suggest that the massive CS Czar, still under construction, may be fitted with a small-scale ion cannon, which could make it far more formidable than was previously believed. Project Dark Reign, as it is named, continues to improve the technology.

Coalition Military Details -- Current

The Eastern Coalition United Defence Force is a combination of space-based forces (which was formed by the merging of the ancient airforce and navy organisations) and ground based forces (the united armies of the Coalition were merged to form the Coalition Overwatch). They must co-operate to effectively defend Coalition territory.

Coalition Overwatch Structure

The Coalition Overwatch are the ground forces of the Eastern Coalition, pledged to defend the citizens and government of all colonies and bases the Coalition lays claim to. Equipped with a variety of projectile and prototype energy weapons, the Overwatch are highly trained and well-equipped, and were a vital asset to winning the war.

Current Combat-Ready Overwatch Troops: 2,500,000

Of those:

1,900,000 core troops
250,000 based on military stations
200,000 based on carriers & cruisers
150,000 elite Overwatch / special operatives

The standard Overwatch troops are divided into divisions of 15,000, with 2,000 of those being heavy weapons personnel. Assigned to these divisions are 200 armoured units (tanks and/or powered armour infantry units), 50 heavy ground transports, and air support in the form of transport gunships.

Those units stationed on carriers or cruisers are somewhat different. They have much smaller divisions of only 500, due to the 'pods' they are deployed to the ground in. When boarding/defending a ship, they will sometimes only operate in units of 10 or 20. They have no access to armour, but a few heavy weapons per division (usually 10, depending on the wishes of the officers).

An additional 1,400,000 civilians are attached to the Coalition Overwatch. These are responsible for logistics, administration and other duties such as equipment maintenance.

Overwatch Guardians utilise the standard-issue Overwatch Pulse Rifle. This rapid-fire Gauss weapon is highly powerful and capable of penetrating all but the heaviest of infantry armour. Its silent operation, lack of significant recoil and long range also makes it a weapon of choice for the Overwatch Elite.
They are also equipped with a standard-issue pulse pistol, which is a basic chemically-propelled projectile firearm capable of lethal force within 500 metres, but lacking penetration power.

The T-1100 Battle Tank is a multi-terrain vehicle capable of being carried from space and down to the surface of a planet by a Saracen Transport. Equipped with a heavy 200mm electrothermal chemical cannon and extremely heavy depleted uranium battle armour, the T-1100 is a significant force on the battlefield. The T-1100 saw extensive and successful action in the recent Great Sol War, being deployed on several colonies and on Earth itself. The Coalition Overwatch currently has 2,350 T-1100 battle tanks in operation, along with an additional 5,700 AV-890 armoured battle vehicles.

The Coalition Navy Structure

The Coalition Navy is a prestigious organisation with its roots dating back to the airforces and navies of ancient times, when carriers floated on the seas and fighters were airplanes. Since the merging of the two organisations across the Coalition into the Navy, the space-based force has been an effective entity.

Current Combat-Ready Navy Personnel: 806,376

Of those:

27,612 serving on carriers
93,054 serving on cruisers
68,210 serving on corvettes & support craft
63,000 fighter pilots & reserve fighter pilots
4,500 Berijev officers
350,000 base & planetside personnel
200,000 reserve officers

There are an additional 500,000 civilians assigned to the Coalition Navy for the purposes of logistics, administration and ship maintenance.

The Coalition Navy has recently been rebuilt, with only a handful ships surviving the Great Sol War.

Strike carriers in the Coalition Navy are not simple aircraft carriers, in a normal sense. They are heavily armed, multi-role warships, combining elements of both aircraft carriers and battleships. Each is capable of launching full volleys of torpedoes and flak at other capital ships. They are the most powerful ships in Sol. The CS Pukov and the CS Varyag are both sister ships, and represent the most powerful ships of all. Most carriers and fighters are of Russian design and construction, with only a few Chinese or Middle-East ships.

The Chinese focus more on fleet support vessels; cruisers and Kurgen corvettes. The Middle-Eastern Confederacy supplies raw materials, the Chinese build the ships. Although the Tornado-class cruiser is mostly Russian design, the Cyclone is wholly Chinese.

It is first necessary to understand the organisation and roles of these ships as well as their specifics (flagship of each fleet highlighted in bold):
