Project: Vanguard (Open espionage RP)

Semi-OOC note: Since the creation of the RWC supercomputer, Black Steel, the Intelligence wing of the Aztec government has been lobbying for the creation of an ANL supercomputer. Of course, the ANL government will start the program. Now, if you want, you can send spies to try to steal the schematics and plans for the system and destroy what we’ve completed so far.

However, keep in mind, this will be much more difficult then how it sounds.

To my allies/partners, etc., if you want to assist me, I’ll be glad to work with you and RP it in. Just keep in mind sending spies without notifying the government is a very bad idea. Should an undocumented spy be caught within ANL territory, then they’ll be captured, “questioned” and deported. If they put up armed resistance…well, you get the pick.

If no one participates, then I’ll RP it myself until the computer is complete and functional.

In the conference room of the Grand Union Chambers, only the soft pulsing sound of a clock could be heard. Outside, the bright city lights crowded all except the most brilliant stars and lights in the warm spring night. A young man looked outside the window, overlooking the capitol, thinking of only one thing, home.

The door opened, a slightly older man, around 47, entered the room, donning a leather jacket, TK-9 at his side. He raised his hand in salute, “Greetings, Comrade Premier Nochtli.”

The twenty-six year old Aztec turned around from his window, returned the salute and said, “All right, down to business. So, what’s got you concerned today, Victor?”

“Well,” said Victor, “we obviously know of the recent addition to the arsenal of the RWC, Blue Steel, correct?”

The Premier nodded, “Yes, of course.”

Victor Tonhuac continued on, “Well, as the Minister of Intelligence, I have talked to Director Garza of the AIA and what he feels about this issue. He feels, with our computer technology, the ANL can build a supercomputer for our own military uses.”

“Go on”, said the Premier as he poured himself a glass of water.

“Quetzalcoatl, by your own decree, you banned nuclear weapons and all other WMDs. In lieu, the ANL built an advanced missile defense system. However, our system isn’t up to par, in my opinion any more. I feel this computer is vital to our defense…”

“I’ve already made up my mind, Victor,” Quetzalcoatl smoothly said, “I approve. I’ll get the Soviet Congress to apportion the money tomorrow.”

Surprised by the relative ease of the meeting, Victor Tonhuac said, “Sir, I’m glad you have made this choice. This is an important asset we can not pass up.”

The Premier then asked, “Is there any thing else I need too know about?”

“No.”

“Well, then, I wish you the best in this project.” Said the Premier.

Victor saluted and walked out of the room quickly. Meanwhile, the Premier turned back around, over looking the window. He then wrote a memo to Chief Majority Congressman Jorge Arroyo,

Congressman Arroyo,

I ask you to appropriate a grant to the Ministry of Intelligence in regards to a new project. I will send you the information regarding the project tomorrow. Until later, my friend.”

With that, he mailed the memo to the office of Congressman Arroyo and headed down to his car where he would finally be able to head back home and love.

---THREE DAYS LATER---

Location: The Veracruz Naval Station, Veracruz, México, ANL
Time: 5:00 PM

A contingent of computer scientists talked amongst themselves, regarding this new “Project Vanguard.” All they knew is it was based around computers. One scientist exclaimed, “This is it, we’re about to create data crystals as seen in Schultaria Prime. Other scientists began to give conjectures as to this sudden request. Many of the assembled scientists were among the best in the field of computer science. Meanwhile, the AIA agents all crowded among the walls of the building, watching over the scientists. Only a few agents here and there were talking amongst themselves quietly. Most of the agents simply looked over the crowd of scientists, wondering what this mission was all about. However, the chattering stopped as soon as Victor Tohuac walked out in front of the crowd.

“You have been assembled here today because the government is assigning you to a new project. I will give you the opportunity to leave now, if you wish. This project is the most top secret project the ANL has ever undertaken. If you feel you are not able to work up to the level we will expect of you, or you feel you might compromise the project, leave now.

The scientists looked among each other, and talked amongst themselves in a low murmur. Failure wasn’t an option for AIA missions; failure would entail disgrace, and, possibly imprisonment. Quietly, a quarter of the 200 scientists assembled got up and went out the door. With the exception to a few, only the most prominent computer scientists of the ANL remained.

Tonhuac continued on, “From this moment on, until we feel we no longer need your services, you will be working for the AIA on Project Vanguard. I believe we are all familiar with current events. The RWC has developed a supercomputer, clearly a great asset to their military efforts. While the policy of brinkmanship is dangerous, this new creation has brought to light an important issue. The computers controlling our missile defense systems, satellites, and communications systems are outdated by any standard. This clearly isn’t acceptable. Your task is to design and build a series of new machines that can control our missile defense systems, our communications systems and our satellites. In addition, you must design one computer to be able to decrypt coded messages.

One of the younger, less known scientists raised his hand, “Minister Tonhuac, are you asking for a system that is fully automated or a system that is still under control by people?”

The Minister looked back and responded, “I want it to be automated to an extent…We can’t give up human controls, a manual override is needed. Any other questions?”

Silence…

“All right then,” continued Tonhuac, “The base of operations is going to be in Puerto Barrios, on the Guatemalan/Honduran border. There is an AIA facility that is being retrofitted to accommodate you. Of course, you are limited to what you can do or where you can go. For the most part, you can walk on the grounds of the facility, but, we warn you not to leave the protected grounds. The facility will be guarded by the AIA, ISPA, Jaguar Warriors, and the Coast Guard. Good luck, you have approximately $350 million dollars per computer to play with. Go to the heavy cruiser SAS Challenger. On its patrol mission down the ANL coast, it will dock at Puerto Barrios where you will be transported to the facility by train.”

The scientists and AIA agents got up and walked out of the room. Quietly, the contingent moved towards the docks in the back of the facility. Several scientists began to talk amongst themselves again, discussing plans, going over formulas, ect. Eventually, they made it to the Challenger, loaded their luggage, boarded the ship, and waited for it to depart to Puerto Barrios.

On of the scientists walked to the aft of the ship and looked over the railing. The crisp blue sky overhead was magnificent, while the 5:45 PM sun shined on the western half of the city. He felt a hand on his shoulder, “James, how are you my friend?” a familiar voice said.

James Martin turned around to greet the person behind him. “Eddie, long time no see.” James gave Eddie a hug, “So, what have you been up to?”

“Nothing much, to be honest, not much at all. I chose to turn down the job at the University of Cuernavaca and decided this could be a better opportunity for me.” The tall and longed haired Eddie Portillo said.

“I’m surprised you were invited to work on this project. I mean, after all, you are a member of the Democratic Capital Party. I’m surprised the government would allow a capitalist to work on this project.”

“Meh, although I may capitalist, I’m still one of the best in the field on computer science.” Eddie said with pride, holding on to his leather jacket.

“Ahh, you ego supersedes you once again.” James retorted in a joking mater.

After that, the boat lurched forward. The propellers cut through the water, pushing the boat slowly through the dock.

“So,” inquired Eddie, “When do you think we’ll be in Puerto Barrios?”

“Typical of the Aztec government, we’ll get there around two o’clock in the morning, and be off the train by 4 AM. The AIA wouldn’t do anything under daylight, that’s no secret.

The two continued to talk amongst themselves as the boat left the protection of the harbor into the open Caribbean ocean.

So ANL, how should we go about involving ourselves?

A short introductory post:

IC:

Vasiliy Andropov pushes away a section of curtain and nods in greeting to Lieutenant Beatrice Gardner, who sits against a section of wall.

"Nice moves," says Vasiliy as he sits down next to Beatrice. An excellently-crafted Japanese Sword sits in its sheath nearby, and on the other side of the room another officer ducks into a side room. "Quite a bruise you've got there," says Vasiliy, pointing to a large bruise on her left arm. "You should really take it down a notch."

"Nah, its not the same," says Beatrice before she takes a swig of water.

"Well, you'd better dry off. You're soaked."

Off the coast of the Yucatán

James Martin slept in the dark and small quarters he was assigned to. He was one of the lucky ones; he was given one of the lower level officer quarters, as he wasn’t sleeping with the rest of the crew and team in the bunks.

The ship plunged along the coast at half speed. Although the Challenger was one of the faster ships in the Aztec Navy, there wasn’t much need to hurry. The heavy cruiser’s crew was mostly on shore leave – typically, the government assigned ships with most of their crew on shore leave to minor duties, situations that would not require a large crew. This was more of a training mission, rather, as most of the manning crew members were cadets who were taking their final exams.

In his sleep, James Martin dreamed about his former life – his successes, his wealth, his excess and his decline and how the change in government saved him. His processor company had gone bankrupt in the depression of 2001, and, only until the socialists came to power, Dr. Martin was nothing, as the Spanish speaking people called it, “un frecaso.”

Knock, knock, knock…

James woke up, groggily… “What…who is it?”

The door opened quietly and foot steps could be heard walking in. Nervous, he turned on the light and put on his glasses.

Standing next to James was an AIA agent, TK-45 at his side. The agent said without any emotions, “Just to let you know, I’m going to be your personal body guard, Dr. Martin.”

James Martin was confused as hell, “What are you talking about? I need a body guard?”

The agent simply replied, “Dr. Martin, you’re considered to be one of the more important scientists in this project, the AIA feels your protection is most imperative.”

Although not fully conscious or coherent, James said, “All right, well, keep up the good work then.”

With that, the agent walked out of the room and closed the door. James turned off the lights and began to think, “Geez, I wonder what they are going to do with Eddie?”

James Martin closed his eyes and tried to go to sleep. Sure, he was tired enough, and well, he felt like hell. James tried for an hour before he forfeited his futile attempt. Bored and frustrated, he finally got up, turned on the light and walked over to a desk where he opened up a brief case. He took out the papers from the brief case and began to look over them - schematics and designs he had created of circuitry, CPUs and auxiliary processors. Inside his briefcase was a chip in a glass bottle. He took his eyes off the papers and moved over to the chip, looking at the tool that brought his success. The eight year old chip was ancient by today’s standards, but at one time, that stood as the paramount technological advance of the Aztec Confederation. (Pre-ANL history – if you’re curious, refer to my Fact Book)

As Dr. Martin went back to his designs, he was again interrupted.

Knock, knock…

“Yeah, come in.” Said Dr. Martin, slightly irritated.

The door cracked open and an older man with a cane hobbled into the doorway. “Comrade Doctor Martin,” he said, “I am Dr. Teoiteuhan, the leader of the project. I am aware of your successes in the past. I request that you accept my appointing of you as head of micro circuitry for the project.”

Dr. Martin was shocked, “Thank you, sir, I’m honored.”

Dr. Teoiteuhan quietly said, “I’m sorry I don’t have time to chat, I must talk to the other scientists.” With that, the old man left the room, leaving Dr. Martin by himself, finally leaving him in peace.

Two hours later…

The SAS Challenger docked into the foggy and dark harbor at Puerto Barrios. The ship slowly drew closer to the dock itself until it bumped into it softly, sending a small thud throughout the ship. Several of the scientists woke up and began to wonder what had happened. Soon afterwards, the commanding officer of the ship’s voice came over the loud speakers:

“All passengers are to debark from this vessel immediately. We have reached Puerto Barrios. Again, all scientists are to leave immediately.”

A second later, a loud klaxon reverberated throughout the ship for a couple of seconds. En masse, the scientists disembarked off the Challenger and onto the platform. Within an hour, the scientists were all disembarked, with their luggage, waiting for the next leg of the trip.

An electric train then pulled up to the platform and came to a stop. The doors flung open and the scientists and agents loaded onto the train silently. The hoard of scientists and agents all settled in the train in fifteen minutes. Although several of the scientists went back to sleep, many others looked out the window, looking back on the impressive Challenger. However, the train soon departed, heading towards their destination on the outskirts of Puerto Barrios.

An electric train clanked and rocked on the tracks as the scientists aboard were either asleep or reading. Aboard the train, the lights glowed like a florescent flame, illuminating the interior of the car.

---BUMP!---

The train switched to another pair of tracks and raced down the new rails. The train’s velocity was shortly slowed after though. The bright luminescence of flood lights broke through the dark night time jungles. The train’s brakes clasped on to the large metal wheels and began to squeal. Doors flung open, and the scientists made their departure from the train and on to the platform of the development center of the new supercomputer. Several of the scientists took in their dark and humid surroundings. Large, tropical trees grew around the complex. The only sounds that broke the silence were the sounds of machinery, low level chatter and the chirps of strange birds.

A young Jaguar Warrior Infantryman (JWI), armed with a TZ-140 assault rifle, walked in a quick and formal fashion towards an intercom system. Typical of the JWIs, he was wearing the JWI’s “minimalist” battle uniform – a partially zipped up standard armored vest, camouflage pants and military boots. However, on his left arm, unlike the regular JWIs, was a black arm band, and in the center was an obsidian blade. He swung his TK-140 across his back, wiped the sweat off his forehead and then grabbed a megaphone. Activating it, he said to the group:

“I am Commander Xihuitl Ixcatzin of the Obsidian Blade Order of the Jaguar Warriors, the commander of this base. Yes, you have been told this was an AIA facility, but, this is also a base for the JWIs. All security and military concerns will be handled by me and the faculty. AIA and ISPA agents, please report to the conference room for a briefing on the security protocols here. All scientists please report to your quarters inside the base, they have been pre-assigned to you.”

With that, Commander Xihuitl put down the megaphone and walked back to his previous task – emptying 50 pound bags of concrete mix into a mixer.

The scientists quickly started to move towards the doors of the base with their luggage. The automated doors opened and the crowd moved into the large edifice. Dr. James Martin moved towards the main desk. The JWI at the main desk asked him “Name, sir?”

“Dr. James Martin.” He said quickly.

The JWI then gave him the key to his room – B-108. He then moved away, looked for the B section and moved towards the 100’s. After a few minutes of searching, he opened the door. He looked in an entered the room. Closing the door behind him, he turned on the lights and looked in. James Martin could only describe it in two words…“How Spartan.”

The room was like a medium sized hotel room and the quarter walls were adobe colored, but everything else was unremarkable in aesthetic appearances. However, he was tired and fell back on the bed, which was surprisingly comfortable. “Soon, we’ll start the project”, Dr. Martin thought to himself as he slowly drifted to sleep.

OOC: Ok, I know I transported my scientists by train to the facility. However, you may transport your group by car. I simply had too many scientists to move to use a car or a truck.

Message Response to the Nation of Aztec National League

-Subject: Re: Project Vanguard

-----

On behalf of the Schultarian Central Scientific Collective, we would like to inform your nation that said message (Subject: Project Vanguard) has been received by the pertinent Schultarian authorities and we have come to consensus on our course of action. After analyzing the cost / benefit analysis of your situation at hand in addition to any and all outstanding projects of similar nature currently being developed by forces both allied and antagonistic to the Schultarian nation, we present the Nation of Aztec National League with the following response.

The Schultarian Central Scientific Collective, in light of the potential humanitarian threats posed by the most extreme members of the Right Wing Collective organization, has concluded that project Vanguard is and must be of the most expedient importance to our collective security. While our industries alone could match the potential performance of what has come to be known as project "Black Steel", the costs of such a project are prohibitive for even the most solvent of national budgets. The costs are simply too prohibitive to contain within a single nation; therefore, as a sign of good faith that this project will be used for the common good of all participating nations, the Central Scientific Collective is poised to offer the Nation of Aztec National League its support in the fields of operating system development, hardware architecture for enhancing digitally intelligent systems, plus appropriate (and secure) financing up to 445 billion merlons (~805 billion USD and change).

If required, we are willing to send one of our most revered computer science research groups to further expedite the progress of this project. The KAL LEL, or "Electric Dream", research group is the seminal Schultarian authority on the fields of intuitive operating systems and quick response digital intelligence constructs. With over four and a half centuries' worth of professional experience, this thirty person group has almost single handedly altered the way in which computers are now used in research applications throughout Schultaria Prime. Led by Doctor Shanin Watzer (PhD: University of Schultaria Prime - Colloi), a brilliant researcher in the field of software neural networking simulation, we believe that they might prove to help benefit your project. If your nation is interested, please contact us as soon as possible to work out potential details and possible research goals.

BEEP!

The loudspeaker pulsed a loud beep throughout the base, and then Commander Xihuitl's voice came on,

"All project leaders convene in the briefing room immediately."

Dr. James Martin looked up from his office window. He was beginning to like his new office and new equipment. He had placed several circuitry schematics for processors and other chips on the office’s display board. He glanced over at the chip schematics, took a sense of pride and then told his assistant to make sure the workers began to construct a prototype. Quickly, he got up and headed to the conference room, which was only a couple of feet away from his quarters.

A few minutes later, he entered the conference room, surprised to see only Commander Xihuitl there. "Ahh, good, I'm glad one person arrived quickly. Please, sit down." The Jaguar Warrior said.

Dr. Martin went over to sit down and set some papers down on the table. He looked up at Commander Xihuitl and asked, "How long have you been in the JWIs? And also, where have you been?"

Commander Xihuitl looked up, surprised he asked. "Well, I've been in since the ANL's second civil war in early 2004. I did a lot of hand-to-hand combat and point blank shootouts. I then was involved with the AIA's operations in the Mississippian Federation. Not fun, very violent and full of damn racists. After that, I've done a couple of internal missions and foreign missions."

Dr. Martin said blankly "Oh." He didn't know what to say, he had heard of Xihuitl's name before, but, never realized how much fighting he had done. Right about as he was going to continue on, several scientists walked into the briefing room and took their chairs.

Commander Xihuitl stood up and said, "Everyone, just one quick and simple announcement. The Ministry of Intelligence has requested help in our project. We shall be receiving help from LRR, Schultaria Prime, Exrenia and the Island of Rose. As such, security will be increased for the protection of you, our allies and Project Vanguard. Any questions?"

None said anything...

"All right, dismissed."

Vasiliy and Beatrice wake up at about seven o'clock the next morning, and the scent of opium still hangs in the air despite the ventilation system. Vasiliy is the first to open his eyes, and doesn't remember how he got where he is or why.

"Ugghhhhh...."

KNOCK KNOCK

"Excuse me, sir...madam, your flight is in two hours."
"Beat it!"
"Right away, sir."

The intelligence service has been notorious for its somewhat lax rules and regulations regarding the officer ranks, and scenes like this are not uncommon. But most are rather inconvenient.

Beatrice and Vasiliy emerge one and a half hours later, showered and dressed, and head for the airport. They are tasked with providing security to doctor Ibrahim Colombo, a leading Robotstani computer scientist who usually shuns military work, but has agreed to go in an advisory role.

Vasiliy straps on a Nagant revolver and gets in the driver's seat, and Beatrice sits in the passenger seat. In contrast to Vasiliy, Beatrice is armed to the teeth. She not only has a 9mm pistol, but also a silencer, dagger, throwing knives, and a garotte. However, Vasiliy has shot more times with his elderly Nagant than Beatrice has with her high-end 9mm automatic.

They get to the airplane on time and take off for ANL...

Dr. James Martin entered his office and again looked at his designs. Although he was proud of them, he couldn’t feel more nervous about foreign assistance. He feared his designs would be shredded beyond recognition by his peers. Quietly, he said to himself, “Damn, I hope they like this…”

“What, Dr. Martin. A woman, Dr. Martin’s assistant, turned a corner in the wall and looked to him, wondering what he said.

“Nothing, Chichtli, just muttering to myself. We’re going to have foreign scientists come in to help us with this project. I’m just nervous about the prototype.”

“Well, said Chichtli, “We’re etching the main circuit board for the central processor now. As you specified, the circuits are exactly .2 microns apart.”

“Good, how long do you expect it will take to complete?”

“Well,” said Chichtli, “The main circuit layer should be completed in about 2 hours. The second layer should be complete in four and the platinum connector pins should be complete in a day. The chip should take about twenty minutes to manufacture.”

“Good,” said Dr. Martin. “Approximately, what is the clock speed on the chip?”

“2.5 gigahertz, sir.”

“Damn, we’ll have to produce a lot to get them into the supercomputer range.” Dr. Martin said.

He went back to his desk and started to do some complex math algorithms. “Nothing like an complex problem…” he said to himself.
Aztec National League
18-04-2005, 05:18
“Dr. Martin.” Chichtli said aloud, “Dr. Martin, we’ve completed the chip, motherboard and its corresponding chipset, it’s designed to be at 2.5 gigahertz. Front side bus is at 133 MHz, L2 cache is at 1.5 MBs. We also have a backup and the drivers programmed.”

“Good, very good, actually. That puts us ahead schedual. “Hook up the motherboard and the processor to a computer and see if it works. If it blows out, no big problem, it’s just a prototype.”

“Yes Doctor.”

James Martin knew it couldn’t be this easy. He had been in the chip business for years, and never has something gone so easy for him. Indeed, he already had all the designs and specifications complete, but, at the same time, it couldn’t have gone this well.

Meanwhile, throughout the rest of the base, several scientists buzzed about working on designs and other aspects of the project. Even in Dr. James Martin’s lab, a team on 40 scientists worked to get the computer chip up and running.

After about fifteen minutes, Dr. Martin’s team turned on the computer…after a few seconds...

“Oh my God! It works!”

Alarmed, Dr. James Martin ran back over to the computer and saw the warm glow of the monitor. As the OS loaded quickly, Dr. Martin not only felt relieved and pride, he was shocked.

“Damn, computers aren’t supposed to act this way!”

Greetings,

As you are aware, the ANL is conducting the construction of a supercomputer, codenamed Project Vanguard. As the commanding officer of the base where this project is taking place, I am also in charge of perimeter security. While the JWIs at the base have been able to perform well in protecting the base, I feel, because of our small numbers, that we may need assistance in fully securing the area.

I invite troops of your YARR Special Forces to Choponiloni Military Base in Puerto Barrios, Guatemala, ANL to assist in the protection of Project Vanguard. If you accept, the ANL government will be willing to discuss transportations and any other issues you may be concerned about.

Of course, the Island of Rose has promised to assist in this. Unfortunately
we cannot help on the technological front as much as others can. But we will
gladly help you with defense. As you know the Rosktai go through an insane
amount of training to be where they're at. With a refresher course every two
months for two weeks. But I'll stop boasting, of course we will help. We have
no problem with transportation arrangements. We luckily have Rosktai right
now in the Rosian Embassy in the Aztec National League, in Technochitlan,
or however you spell it.They will be the one in the imposing AIBS system and
the ski masks. God bless.

Six large barracks trucks noisily rumbled through the Tenochitilán streets of the Diplomatic Quarter. Although empty, many people walking along the crowded, eclectic and usually festive streets with curiosity, wondering what the military trucks were doing. It usually was very rare for any military presence in this part of town. Finally, the large trucks made it to the Rosian Embassy, pulled into the underground parking lot and parked the trucks. Quickly, the driver of one of the trucks got out of the cab, hopped out of the truck and closed the door. Quietly, he waited for the Rostaki to board the trucks and take them to Puerto Barrios.

The six Rosktai saw as the truck arrived. They were in the AIBS System. Which might be described as the Hamptonian Land Warrior System, which the Island has production rights to, sort of. It's complicated, but eh. Their weapons were simple too, the ROICW-1A which the Premier saw, but didn't test. And the standard sidearm, the M1911 Colt. Hey, it worked for seventy years and it can work for another seventy.

One by one, the Rosktai boarded the truck, looking at themselves and looking all RAWR like. Special forces need to do that you know. Then a conversation started about where they were going, and if they would actually get to shoot things.

Meanwhile, in Tenochitilán…

“All right,” the driver said to the Rosktai, “I assume you haven’t been briefed regarding this mission, so I’ll tell you what I know, which isn’t much anyways. We’re going to the southern ANL Guatemalan city of Puerto Barrios. We’re going to be working on providing security for a new military base down there and a couple of military questions. The base is ran by the ANL’s Jaguar Warriors, so, it’s a little on the barren side, however, I’m sure it won’t be terrible. Oh well, on with the show, we have a long drive ahead.”

The driver then looked to the five other trucks that came along…“Oh well, I guess we didn’t need them after all.” With that, the ANL truck backed up out of the embassy loading bay and drove towards the freeway at the speed limit.

“Do any of you have any questions before we begin?”

Meanwhile, in Puerto Barrios…

Dr. James Martin looked over the benchmarks of the new chip. “Amazing, simply amazing…” he said. Dr. Teoiteuhan stood over his shoulder.

“Good news,” said Teoiteuhan, “We’ve now gotten more funds, so we can mass produce the chip.”

Dr. James Martin turned around, “Well, sir, I would like to make sure the foreign scientists approve of the chip. It could only help us to get some constructive criticism.”

“Indeed, all right, that seems reasonable.” Said the Doctor.

Dr. James Martin then sent out the following letter to the powers involved with the technical aspect of the project.

Subject: Project Vanguard Update

Greetings,

I am Dr. James Martin, head of the micro-circuitry department of Project Vanguard. I simply wish to update you on the progress of the project.

Currently, we have been able to design a prototype central processing unit. Although it is a functional prototype, it appears promising already. In addition, the motherboard and chipset systems are designed and functioning. However, we would still like your input on this design.

Thank you…

A Message from the Office of the Schultarian Central Scientific Collective

Dear Doctor Martin,

On behalf of the Schultarian scientific establishment we are honored that you have asked for our input on the hardware design of Project: Vanguard. We hope that what assistance we can render will be useful and beneficial to the project at hand. Given the obvious complexity of the project in engineering and international political terms, our nation understands that clarity in our national ethos might be required should we commit a large amount of research personnel to this project.

The work ethic of Schultaria Prime is a far cry from what is considered to be the global "norm", and we feel in the interests of frankness and honesty that we should disclose our operating practices. First and foremost, you might notice that some of our scientists seem a bit "distracted" or "off topic" when it comes to the work involved on this project; though it might seem frustrating, the practice of being sidetracked in a project is considered vital for the Schultarian creative process and might lead to cursory advances which could be beneficial.

Another topic of concern might be the hours, or rather the peculiar times that our researchers might work; under the rigors of our labor laws, no individual working for the Schultarian government can work more than 30 hours weekly. This being the case, many scientists choose to pull their full shifts in one long stretch allowing for free time during the week to work on more abstract items of a particular research project without intensive oversight. Nonetheless, we are very open to working within the structures of your research culture should our items prove to be too ungainly to effectively manage.

Once again, thank you for this opportunity. We hope not to disappoint,

Dr. James Martin overlooked the reply letter from the Schultarians. He then grabbed his telephone and dialed a code – the code for a three-way conference call. He then dialed the number of Project Director Teoiteuhan and then, the number of the office of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Darius Wellington. After the phone line made a couple of quick pulses, the other lines picked up.

“Dr. Teoiteuhan here.”

“Ministry of Foreign Affairs…Oh, hello Dr. Teoiteuhan., what brings you here?”

“It wasn’t me who called.”

“Sirs”, said Dr. Martin, I have offered the Schultarians the ability to review the hardware designs of Project Vanguard. I request that their scientists are given clearance to the project.”

After a couple of moments of silence, Dr. Wellington said, “I approve if the Project Director approves.”

“I approve.”

Dr. Wellington then said. “I’ll telegram them giving them clearance to come. Thanks for letting us know.”

And, as quickly as the conversation started, it ended.
