Project: Hammer constructs first Prototype

After nearly twelve years in research and development, the Aequatian Joint Army and Air Force project code-named "Hammer" had finally finished a finalized design for which the government was finally prepared to fund for the construction of its initial prototype of a space-based, kinetic-energy weapon for use on ground targets. Unlike the unfinished Project: Hawkeye which was the development of a high energy laser weapon, Project: Hammer has finally reached a point where it will inhabit the Earth in a physical form.

Its design calls for an orbital platform which can deliver repeated strike capability anywhere that Aequatian forces may be operating. It will use a global positioning system for accuracy up to 0.75 metres and nothing more than a magnetic accelerator and the Earth's gravity to provide the projectile with the penetration value unseen by aircraft-mounted munitions or cruise missiles. The projectile consists of a spin-stabilized, solid tungsten penetrator rod 0.3m in diameter and 6.4m in length with an iron composite core for use in the magnetic accelerator.

The weapon was originally designed to act within the anti-satellite role, but the design was made larger for use against ground targets such as enemy fortifications, fuel tanks or even enemy capital ships which would otherwise be difficult to eliminate with the use of artillery, naval gunfire, cruise missiles or aircraft-mounted munitions. The concept was born out of the government's refusal of funds for the development of large "Supercarriers" or "Super Dreadnoughts" seen in development or already deployed in several other navies. The system will be able to easily defeat such vessels and any other targets on the battlefield by simply punching through the ship's weaker deck armour instead of attempting to penetrate its armoured belt like standard anti-ship missiles or shells.

The platform will be rearmed with additional ammunition with a specially-designed transport shuttle which will carry up to eight fifty-projectile containers that will be loaded into the weapon, an autoloader built in will feed the ammunition in and it will be controlled from a ground station at Central Command in Magna Casa, Aequatio with coordinates given from commanders on the battlefield.

The prototype's construction will begin in a week's time where the platform's components will be built indepentently of each other before being transported to the launch facility in San Allimos, Aequatio for final construction and preparation for launch.
