After departing from Panama, the 500 Whittier troops landed on the Galapagos. It had taken them little over half a day to arrive. The convoy was escorted by the 4th fleet.
The islands, though large, were occupied only by 2,000 people. Most of them poor starving fishermen. The world had ignored these islands but today that would end. The troops carried supplies and after establishing a beach head, with subs and surface warships providing a screen from enemy vessels, began roving the islands, handing out humanitarian supplies. In the center of the main island the red, white, and blue flag of the Union of People's Republics was raised and the islands formally claimed in the name of the UPR.
The Whittier soldiers having secured a foothold and setting up camp, the fleet left to go back to Panama and pick up reenforcements. The total troop strength on the Galapagos was planned at 5,000.
