OOC: Naval Organisation - Incorporated Sarzonian Navy

Background
The Incorporated Sarzonian Navy has long been the most prestigious branch of the Sarzonian military. Along with that prestige and reputation have come consistently higher defence budget percentages devoted to the Navy. Unlike the other branches, which are headed by Chiefs who report to the Vice President for Defence, the Navy is headed by a Vice President for Naval Operations, who reports directly to the President.

Even more than simply the recognition of the Navy as a separate, Cabinet-level entity from the Department of Defence, the reputation for success of the ISN has led to some unfortunate consequences. Namely, the Incorporated Sarzonian Army has gained an unfair reputation for being the dumping ground for rejected naval recruits. While the Incorporated Sarzonian Air Force is small, its structure and personnel have earned a sterling reputation in their own right, but the ISN has more manpower and prestige than all other branches put together.

History
The history of the Incorporated Sarzonian Navy began modestly shortly after American expatriates founded the country back in 2004. Early organisers of the ISN were reluctant to tap into their unknown landmass's natural resources and were originally discouraged to find a lack of iron ore in the original 17 states of the Incorporation. However, the brain trust that included then-Navy Chief George Russert, Assistant Chief for Naval Acquisitions Josiah Humphries, Vice President for Defence Terrence Wilson, and President Mike Sarzo decided they did not want to rely on recycled American designs. It was then that they turned to the Royal Shipyards of Isselmere-Nieland to begin to establish their navy.

Humphries received a report from the Naval Acquisitions staff that outlined the designs of the RSIN and recommended purchase of many designs. Sarzo readily agreed and made the initial contact with Director-General Sir Thomas Bullfinch. A short time later, that contact became a bond of friendship and fealty that lasted for many years.

The new navy received its first test in a naval exercise conducted against the experienced navy of Feazanthia and, despite a lack of air power and despute being undergunned, the ISN performed admirably, setting the stage for many successful operation in the years ahead. As the Navy grew, her reputation and confidence grew with it, and provided the country with its own set of heroes and naval heritage.

Today

The aims of the ISN are to Deny the nation's territorial waters to would-be enemies; To Project Sarzonian military presence anywhere in the world; To Win up to two fronts in major wars and to Hold in a third, while still retaining the ability to Extend a show of force wherever necessary. Evidence of this strategy has been illustrated by a simulated war where the ISN, in conjunction with coalition naval forces, successfully clamped a stifling blockade against two enemy countries simultaneously.

A recent economic downturn and an internal audit of the Incorporated Sarzonian Armed Forces resulted in the implementation of a leaner and meaner programme, whereby the size of the navy's active commissioned fleet was reduced in half to allow for extensive reforms to the Incorporated Sarzonian Army and the strengthening of the Air Force. The ISN is confident that it can perform the tasks expected of it in spite of the reduction in force.

A recent act of Parliament has established the rank of Fleet Admiral as a permament naval rank and has elevated the rank of Commodore to flag status. [OOC: In other words, a Commodore is now equivalent to Rear Admiral Lower Half.]

During peacetime, these seven fleets, making up a total of 644 warships, are on deployment while roughly 400 vessels remain in the Ready Reserve, able to be deployed almost immediately upon commencement of hostilities. The other ships in the fleet remain in ordinary for refits, repairs, and assessment of capabilities, and roughly two thirds of the fleet may be fitted out and deployed within weeks.

ooc: Sweet work (again, sorry if i may have offended you). Why reduce your navy though? You're an island nation.

OOC: Because I just got tired of dealing with scrutiny about my navy's size from other players even though I've consistently RP'd what I considered valid explanations for why my navy is so much larger than any other branch of the military. Besides that, I wanted to work on strengthening the army and later my air force.

ooc: Meh, i counted my navy today, 2304 combat ships.

OOC: I counted my navy too, and it added up to 13,000+ ships, although that included the many LSD's and logistics ships in there as well.

edit: miscounted, it's closer to 9,000+

Thanks. :)

It's not quite as good as Praetonia's work of art, but his inspired me to add my bit about naval history and heritage to this thread.

Ah yes, I had the same problem, everybody bitched about my navy eventhough I gave reasonable explanations...(island nation, recieving funds from two other countries to maintain a patrol of their waters) but nobody realy seemed to care what reasons I gave.

Abeit, nice list and for fuck sakes, don't listen to other people when they bitch about something your sure. 4000 combat capable vessles is reasonable right?

PS: care to pass me your msn/aim?
