How to deal with n00bs.

The Island of Rose

All right I may not know big fancy words or how a tank fires or how it even works. But I do know how to RP. So let me clear things up.

Newbie: Just getting the hang of the game. Might make a few mistakes here and then, but with the help of the community he can be a mighty nice RPer.

N00b: A person who's there to troll, annoy, or just be a jackass.

Most of the people you insult are actually newbies! Amazing isn't it?! You guys go "OMG N00B" and "LMAO!111!!! *ignores*" and to tell you the truth you're just behaving as bad as them.

You should try to teach them. If somebody has too many men in their army do not go "OMG N00B! YOU STOOPID! *ignores*" instead go "You seem to have alot of men there, I don't think that's possible. Here read this thread (link) and see what you can do. I know alot of people that can help."

Now who seems nicer? The second choice of course. Because the first choice will make you look n00bier then the n00b and you could get DEAT for that. It applies to every situation. Grammar, help them out. Research threads, help them out. You know what I mean.

And what about if you tried everything you could to help? Well... er... I suggest to leave the thread. Insults just get EVERYONE in trouble. Then you'll be DEATed.

Err... it's not long, but maybe I can help people deal with n00bery. I know there was a thread with different classifications of n00bs... but that's me. Anyway, most of you aren't good RPers anyway ;)

K thnx bye :P

You've got my agreement on that. Quite often it really irritates me how people will just ignore someone instantly for not having 100% top-quality RP skills, or the best grammar ever known. How on earth are players supposed to get better if no-one will allow them to make a mistake, ever?

It's all fine and well for someone being ignored for having a "300 million man army" or saying "I PWN TEH WORLD!!!!111 J00 AR3 ALL MINE NOW!!!11111" etc, but don't ignore them for not mentioning the reason they are declaring war, or RPing badly. Either say nothing and let them improve over time, or actually do something about it by nicely offering hints for better RPing!

Sound advice. If you can't teach them, for goodness sake, at least don't feed t3h tr0ll! If someone declares war on the world, it's obvious that it's a n00bish post. But what's even more appallingly n00bish is the dozen people that invariably make melodramatic posts about their nuke cannons or send sardonic messages from their leaders saying, "Ha, ha, I will destroy you because I am older and you are a silly newb, fear me!"

It's stupid. Cut it out.

What should be done

(without the same thing being done in five hundred consecutive posts)

That's not how things work in NS...read the stickies or contact me @ blah, blah, blah...

What should not be done

DEATing is shorthand (don't ask me why, though) for deleting a nation. This refers to the mods actually deleting them, not a nation dying from inactivity...

And that army size is fine. 2% of your population is the rough figure for an acceptable army, although you will rarely be able to mobilise them all at once.

Ignoring is basically just a humorous way of telling someone that they and everything they have recently done is null and void. It is often used as a technique to fend off undomesticated n00bs.

Oh right, so it doesn't actually count as RP in itself?

Plus, I'm interested to know what capabilities my country has militarily. Where can I find out?

This website should help with the military issues - simply type in your nation's name and your budgets will be displayed for your country. This can be used to roughly figure out your military's size. Also, as a rule your total military should be about 1-2% of your nations size:

http://nseconomy.thirdgeek.com/nseconomy.php?nation

Shoobans are an odd little mutated sub-species that look like Ducks, I think and speak like Jar-Jar Binks from Ep 1. They are annoying, and are often hunted down and massacred by the older nations for fun.

Fedral Union comes to mind as a person in need of a little help. It's now my goal in life to teach him Grammar, timing, and a better sense of storyline.

His choice of techonolgy I can live with.

His popping up and blasting everything to bedrock level is borderline psychotic.

I am sure Gene Roddenberry would be spinning in his stellar grave right this second knowing that his creation - A Federation promoting unity and peace, was warped into a front for space bullies...

My two cents from a recent roleplay. Anyone else noted this?

There was once a nation called Shoobooshaaba, which myself, Roach-Busters, Generic Empire, Doomingsland, and Borman Empire invaded after they attacked TBD. The war was basically a one sided slaughter and in the end the people of that nation were all enslaved. They look sort of like a mix of human and monkey and have an IQ of 45-60.

To be honest, I don't mind helping newbie's usually but it is the most annoying thing when you spend a week or two on IM or email helping them RP properly and then they just disappear... it's why I don't really attempt it anymore...

Perhaps one of the reasons again, why I find some newbies agitating is the level of work they put into posts, even after advice is given. Some of course, put lots of work in and often get a reasonable lot out. However the majority even when they have several RP's under the belt continue to do small posts, which really lack the detail to work with that I would (personally) want.

Sorry, a bit of rant but I also adopting a new policy of just simply not replying to n00bish threads...

Apart from one incident early on in my time here, I either try to help n00bs or simply don't reply to their posts (well, unless they refuse to take good advice, then I argue). I even have a n00b-helping post which I just copy and paste (which small changes). Unfortunately, they always seem to ignore it and then disappear for ever.

The Original List of the Five States of N00bhood:

Newbie: A new player. Learning what NS is and trying to suceed.

N00bie: A new player that has no clue how to RP and is making mistakes constantly. But is learning to RP, allbeit the hard way.

N00b: A new player that is a pain in the ass. Either doesn't know or care about proper RPing. Constantly starts fights, IC and OOC.(EG: New Spartha)

Veteran N00b: A n00b that stays for over six months.(EG: Magic China)

Reverted N00b: An old and (semi)respected nation that, for unkown reasons, has a brain freeze and turns back into a n00b. Spam posts, massive wars that get IGNORED and many other horrible thread types occur.(EG: Klamath)

Made this many months ago.

The biggest problem with TIOR's suggestions is the fact that- after more than two years of playing NS- I am tired of explaining the same thing over and over again. Where do you suppose all those stickies came from? Older nations who got tired of repeating the same message to the endless herds of mindless drones who appear, spout their nonsense, get peeved at receiving any correction or words of wisdom, and then vanish ... only to be replaced by others equally stupid.

I usually just ignore (note the lack of caps) most n00bs when I encounter them. Every so often, if I think I may be dealing with a newb instead, I will post some advice on the rules and proper ettiquette, usually accompanied by suggestions on reading the stickies. If the newcomer refuses to change his ways, ignores the advice/suggestions, or responds with a poorly-spelled rant about minding my own business, he gets filed as a n00b and awarded a well-written and clever IGNORE post.

As an example of my main point, here is a selection of some of the posts I have made to help newcomers over the last couple of years. I got tired of typing this out every day or so, so I saved them on my hard drive. This didn't help the main problem, since cutting-and-pasting the same message every couple of days got tiresome as well.

Newcomers, read and heed. If you want to play, take the time to learn the loose rules of behavior here. A lot of it has been written down in the stickies, and most of the rest can be learned from observation. Read the stickies, and pay attention to the names of the countries that wrote them. Read other posts by those nations. Read the posts of nations who regularly interact with them. If you have a question, ask. If you don't want to ask on the boards, use the "telegram" feature and contact one of the countries who wrote a sticky related to your question. Most of those players will be happy to help you out.

Definitions

n00b- A new player who refuses to play by the rules- especially after the rules have been explained by more experienced players.

Newb- A new player who may not know the rules at first, but is willing to learn when corrected by more experienced players.

One of the characteristics that separates the newb from the n00b is the fact that newbs ask questions, and are willing to modify their behavior when they get the answers. The n00b usually ignores all attempts at behavior modification and drops out of sight after a few weeks, claiming that no one will RP with him.
