Information warfare was the warfare that many feared could be the newest and most efficient way to devastate an enemy. Analysts in Fluffywuffy had long predicted that it was only a matter of time until some terrorist organization launched a cyber Pearl Harbor that would destroy the economy, disrupt logistics databases, and sever communications. But this new warfare required a large, dedicated team of programmers, and the academic infrastructure to recruit the programmers. The infrastructure simply did not exist.
Until now. The 61st Special Regiment was formed, and with it a new generation of warfare in Fluffywuffy would rise. Basic programming classes available as an afterthought in the Imperial military were stepped up to advanced virus programming courses. Hundreds of hackers were recruited and put to work engineering new strains of computer viruses, hacking the world's computers for vital intelligence, and safegaurding the Empire's own systems.
But foreign intelligence services would catch wind of this new unit; initially, many thought it was just another Delta Force or SAS. But, following the creation of this new unit, many analysts theorized that the creation of many virus programming and hacking courses in advanced military training schools meant that this new unit had to be some type of information warfare outfit. Blunt questions by reporters were neither confirmed nor denied, and everyone knew that that meant it was some type of cyber attack unit.
