Cyrian space

The Longrange Planetary Destabilization Cannon, or the "Planet Buster" as it has been called, was unvieled today with it's first test firing upon a mined out planet. This test was recorded, and has been broadcast on all cyrian news networks.
The broadcast:
A rocky, yellowish planet with a thin nitrogen rich atmosphere sits in space, three light hours from the star it orbited. The planet is desolate and lifeless. A voice comes over the recording.
"The planet designated as Kanjiat, of the treblar system, has been stripped of the rich metal and crystalline resources it once held. The only resources left are so far beneath the surface it is impossible to extract them. The planet has but one use left."
Kanjiat fades away, to be replaced with an image of a metallic, ovoid object, which lookes to be impaled along it's length by a long pointed rod. (it would remind humans of an olive with a toothpick stuck through it.) The machine is between the sun and the planet, with one end of the rod pointing directly at each. The voice comes back.
"The Longrange Planetary Destabilization Cannon, nicknamed the 'planet buster' is a marvel of Cyrian engineering. The cannon harnesses power directly from the planets sun, using longrange, tiny wormholes. The cannon's internal reactor processes this energy into a single beam, powerful enough to blast through the crust, mantle, and outer core of a planet. Once through these, the beam will reach the core, sundering it. Mere minutes after the cannon is fired, the planet will begin breaking apart. Any atmosphere a planet has will be lost, and any structures on the surface will be destroyed. If they survive the earthquakes, then the magma from the mantle and core of the planet will do the job."
"The cannon is ready, and the test begins now."
Over the next few seconds, fires swirl around the end of the rod facing the sun, before being absorbed into it. Finally, the cannon has finished charging.
A single yellow beam of light and plasma is emitted from the other end of the rod. The beam rips a hole in the surface of the planet, and continues. After near to two minutes, the beam stops. For just a second a calm descends over the doomed world.
Then the quakes begin. Small at first, soon overwhelming. Cracks appear in the planet, like the shell of a hard boiled egg that has been dropped. The cracks open wide, and the planet splits apart.
Chunks of planetary material fly into space. Molten magma surges into the void to only freeze into rock. What was a planet is now an asteroid field.
"The remains of the planet will be mined. This is the first time this weapon has been used, and we can all hope it will be the last."
The cannon can only be used with an agreement by 80% of the senate, and the permission of the high chancellor. There must be a vote of 95% in the senate to use the cannon without the High Chancellor's consent. The cannon has been moved to a secret location. This ultimate weapon of last resort is now in the hands of the Allied Planets of Cyrian Space.
