Introduction
Background
A military regime favoring Islamic-oriented governments has dominated national politics since independence from the UK in 1972. Since their initial independence, won by the National Islamic Front (NIF), the Sudaheen have drafted 3 Constitutions, combining various aspects of Islamic and English Common laws. In the most recent drafted Constitution, written in 1992, Islamic law was the sole basis. The ruling party is currently a mix of the military elite and the leading members of the National Islamic Front.
