Newport City, SHin Nihon (VNS)-

Today, by a vote in the Colonial Senate, the government of Shin Nihon has elected to join the Virginian Enlightened Combine, as a Commonwealth.

Shin Nihon, a large coastal territory on the Continent of MetaEarth, was once administered by the KSC Corporation. Founded in Dec. 2004 as a "place for the preservation of anime and persecuted peoples," the colony was famous for its large plantations, its repressive rules, and its booming economy. It was also charged with using slave labor to run its plantations and allowing RALM training camps to exist in its lands. However, these claims were not substantiated.

The Commonwealth itself is sizable, with a population of 50 million, a Colonial Defense force of 1,000,000 total (200,000 Army, 300,000 Navy, 200,000 Air Force, and 300,000 Reserves). In addition, its healthy economy, mainly based on exporting tropical fruits (though limited reserves of oil and gold exist), is vibrant and robust, ensuring that the Virginians are getting a good deal.

However, behind this facade, lay a government that has amassed sizable debt and has experienced some conflict, mainly related to its corporate governance. This was the factor that led to its annexation by the VEC.

Responding to the event, Governor Jon O'Donnell said "I consent to this. I feel that the VEC will drive us forward, and that we will benefit. Perhaps some heavy industry will come here; we need it. I can say this: they let us stay [the Colonial Senate]. We get to keep much of our laws, we just have ot embrace Enlightened Democracy. I'm fine with that."

Jake Featherston IV, President of the VEC, has also been enthusiastic.

"It is good to see new peoples opting to join us. We have much to share and much to benefit from, both sides."

As of print, 200 Virginian Marines were being sent to Shin-Nihon to man a VEC military base in the area, though it is clear that the colony will not be too troublesome. Indeed, many are declaring the Marines to be a symbolic measure of Shin-Nihon's new management, and it seems this is true.
