At approximately 2 am local time, dark shapes moved quietly through the breakers onto the beaches on the coastline of Murmansk Oblast. Other, larger shapes remained a safe distance away from shoals and sandbars, but were paying very close attention to the developemnts on shore. As 100,000 troops disembarked from their landing craft, they came up against surprisingly little resistance, it seems that the Murmansk military was still recovering from the abscence of Baltic Karelian troops. Whatever the cause, only a handfull of machine guns and radar stations had to be knocked out before the next stage of the invasion could begin.
In a miracle of timing, the Squornshelan Marines simultaneously attacked almost every military facility within 50 miles of the coast, catching the defenders hopelessly off their guard. At the same time, cruise misile strikes from the frigates just offshore destroyed targets further inland, softening the defenses in what would be an almost continuous bombardment. From further out, Stealth bombers, close to the end of their range, due to the need to zig-zag around the numerous Islands in the Arctic Ocean, flew over the coastal defense batteries without a single casualty, and dropped their Laser Guided Bombs onto specific targets, rarely missing by more than a few feet.
As a result of the first strike, the entire coast was in Squornshelan hands, opening the way for aircraft raids deeper into the oblast.
In a formal declaration the next morning, The Great Prophet Zarquon announced Squornshelous's intention of claiming Murmansk Oblast and adding it to the Empire. "Both the existing empire and Murmansk," he said in his speech, "will benefit greatly from this union."
