Communications Across the Void [Intro FT, Open]

The satellite drifted listlessly through the darkened expanse of space. With sudden contrast to its lifeless state, a maneuvering engine fired, twisting the object round while a red transmitting light blinked on.

Seven minutes later, cheers erupted on board the JNN Platform 02. Drifting in orbit 380 kilometers above the surface of a blue and tan speckled planet, they had just received the first images of the outermost edge of their solar system, transmitted across a void some 133 million kilometers wide.

In the midst of the small celebration inside the Gregori 080 Satellite Command Room, a small man known to his subordinates simply as Plavic stepped in.

“Very well done, boys; let’s put the drinks away now and begin transmission.”

The men in the crowded room sighed, several stepping outside to consume drinks already poured. Within minutes, the room was again deathly still, the only noise now coming from the satellite’s transmission beeping across the void into the waiting receivers onboard a dozen different Orbital Platforms. The message was audible only as a series of electric clicks, but in binary, the message read:

This is the Joint Novikov Navy Satellite Gregori Zero-Eight-Zero attempting communication outside the Novikov System. Respond.

Such was the first attempt at communication outside the Novikov System. The Novikov People, all 140 million of them, had long been exploring space but had only recently reached the technology to propel such an object outside of the Novikov System with any form of accuracy.

Gregori 080 was one of nearly 300 different relay satellites sent on a pilgrimage across the void, each one launched in a different direction from the Novikov home world with the hope of contacting other life. Now, after nearly two years of work, the engineers of JNN Platform 02 prepared for the long wait to see if their efforts would pay off.

[OOC: I'm splitting my nation into Two Parts, one FT and one MT. Please refer to the FT portion (this one) as the JNN if you will. Please also be reasonable when responding. Don't jump me or use outrageous technology or you will be ignored.]

OOC:
Two things first;
1) 133 MSK is only 0.886 AU - the distance between the Earth and the Sun. Being orbital radius, if the Solar System ended at Terra, that would make it 300 MSK across.

If you count out to Pluto, Sol System's a good 12 light-hours across, or 12'960 MSK in diamiter. Count all the little stuff out there, beyond even the Kupper Belt and Ort Cloud(most don't, but I'm being technical already, so *shrugs*), and it can stretch out halfway to the next star.

So, either you goofed, of that's one damn small star system.

*MSK = Mega Statute Kilometers = 1'000'000 km

2) What are you transmitting, and how fast is it? I assume it's not radio, as your characters don't seem expect to wait years for a response. ;)

OOC Since our ship is kinda future tech (dune tech) we can pick up transmissions very far away from us. So even though you can be far away we can still pick up the signal.. i guess i kinda did goof. to tell you the truth i am still new and no one will really RP so i figured your transmission would be a good start The ship Deliverance is on a diplomatic exploration so for the sake of argument it could be near you if you wish. :)

OOC:
Yes, you did goof, on two points.

1) You cannot pick up a transmission unless it has reached you yet - radio, for example, propigates at the speed of light, or just under 300'000 km/second(although I doubt he's using radio). It doesn't matter how good your tech is; if it hasn't reached you, the only way to know about it is if there are some kind of FTL telltails traveling ahead of the transmission or if you were psychic.

2) My last post was directed at Novikov, not you. :p ;)

[OOC:

1) Assuming I am transmitting from the edge of the system to the last planet in it, 133 MKS is reasonable. I never specified a distance to the sun, rather simply a distanc outward. I can change that if it still doesn't seem plausable. Plus I intended the system to be relatively small.

2) Yes. Good 'ol radio is what I'm using. I do plan on waiting a while. Hence the:

Anyway, I'm not that advanced. The idea is to simply gain technology from some other race.]

Oh all the recon missions most pilots absolutly hated traveling through systems and rating the technologocal level of the inhabitants.
"Ranger this is Nightwatcher-R1. I'm picking up just about nothing right now. Looks like we are dealing with a minnor civilization here. Wait computer is picking up a signal, might be some radio or TV show...wait. Well didn't expect that, looks like we got a civ that can bear the shock of a interaction."

"Copy that Nightwatcher-R1. You are ordered to stay where you are and observe them untill we can preform a fold towards your location. Untill then you will not interact with them unless you are confronted and have no means of escape. Will contact you in roughly 1.5-2 hours. Ranger out."

OCC:Would post more if it wasn't for my evil little burnout from all that suger....
