OOC: Before I start, for all newbies that want to mess with me...:
This is Earth II, and if you're not in Earth II, I'll ignore your posts regarding retaliation, etc!!
I will accept suggestions and comments though. Thank you.

IC: It was in the dead of night, dark and cold. It was in the middle of winter, so the turism in Fiji was minimal. There were 40 000 inhabitants for the 3 Marine Regiments to disarm. No problem, when they were supported by the combined air forces from six Ynoga class light aircraft carriers (36 fighter jets), two Pegasus class helicopter assault carriers (80 attack helicopters) and their support vessels. So, the Cots would likely have no problem with the supression of the locals. As a secret backup, twenty Virginia class NSSNs would provide seaward defense. Each was fitted with 8 anti-ship cruise missiles, 20 Mk48 ADCAP torpedos and 8 UGM-600 'Lance' SSMs.

The smaller islands were annexed earlier by a squad of Marines and a EH101 Merlin helicopter each, operating off Zumwalt class and Arleigh Burke class destroyers.

The first wave of Marines from the fifth Marine Regiment assaulted the main island of Viti Levu at 04.30 in the morning, catching the local militia off guard. Increased resistance were met when the Marines fought their way to the capitol city of Suva. Thankfully there were no tourists on the islands now, so the Cots didn't have to be afraid of any diplomatic incidents.

OOC: Technically, there would be lots of tourists there (Fiji is nice this time of year), but I'll let it slide

OOC: Well, I meant the winter in Fiji (the time when it's cold and not many tourists there). But I get your drift.

IC: The first Marines had half the island secured within 20 hours. It was a good thing that there weren't many people with weapons in Fiji. The air war had gone perfectly. Only two Cottish fighters had been shot down, and in both cases had the pilots been able to eject and get picked up by Cottish SAR choppers. The enemy losses were that most of their air force of SU-27s and MiG-31s had been shot down. Several Mi-24 Hind attack gunships had been shot down as well, and only one Cottish helicopter had been forced down. It had been lucky enough to make it safely back to its helicopter carrier.

Only one place had the Cottish Marines been forced to shoot people, and that was in a house that obviously had been used as a safe haven for crack-heads and junkies. The 74 drug-dealers had pulled out revolvers and other pistols against the Cottish Marines (who were carrying XM-8 rifles, MP-5 SMGs and M1911A3 sidearms in addition to the M67 and M84 fragmentation grenade and flashbang, respectivly). They had been mowed down within seconds, along with any junkie that resisted to being evicted before the building was demolished using Composition 4 (C4) plastic explosives. All narcotics found were confiscated and destroyed using thermite grenades.

Other then the little incident with the 74 junkies killed was that the local militia had tried to get organized. Unfortunately the Cottish marines were waiting for them at their rally points and took most of them as POWs. They were treated well. After all, they would be citizens of the Empire soon.

OOC: Thank you Layarteb.

IC: The invasion was going right according to schedule. The POWs were treated with care and respect. As were the civilian population. It was a text-book invasion. All resistance was being wiped out, and all civilians were given reassurances that they would be treated just like citizens of Cotland.

It was early on the fifth day of the invasion. The island of Viti Levu had finally been secured after some moderate fighting near the city of Ba on the northern coast. It had taken two days to terminate the nine hundred defenders in the city, and it had cost the lives of 100 Cottish Marines. Now, the Marines were going to go after the last of the islands: Vanua Lavu. It was home to three cities, a few dozen villages and 17 000 locals that had to be secured. For this task, two regiments of Marines and three carrier battlegroups would be deployed. The remaining regiments and naval units would remain at Viti Levu and the other captured islands to maintain a strong Cottish presence.

The Empire thanks Hawdawg, a long-time ally of Cotland and true friend for the offer of assistance. We accept the offer from Hawdawg. We will need food, water, medicine (morfine, tylenol, etc) and plenty of ammunition (moderate ammounts of 5.56mm, a helluva lot of 6.8mm, a little 7.62mm, a good deal of 9mm, plenty of 12.7mm and a few thousand rounds of 15.5mm). If you can provide us with this, we will be most thankful.

Regards,
Imperial Cottish Marine Corps

The Cottish assault on Vauna Lavu started at 0257 with the first 5 inch HE shells being fired from the deck guns of the various cruisers, destroyers and frigates that provided naval support for the Marines in their Higgins boats and LSTs, now only three minutes from the beaches. One hour earlier, F/A-18E Super Hornet fighter-bombers from the Nimitz class carriers dropped napalm on the treeline at the beach, incinerating any potential defenders that lay in wait there. The flames provided with a scary back-drop for the 2000 marines that would land on the beach.

"Dog 1" beach, Nasea, Vanua Levu
3rd Company, 1st Battalion, 15th Marine Regiment was going to be among the first troops that would take the beach that had been designated "Dog 1" by the Marines. Inside the leading Higgins boat stood CPT Mike Taylor and 29 other Marines, ready with their night-vision goggles and XM-8s.

'Well, we're not gonna get ass-f***ed here' CPT Taylor thought, looking at the back of the boat. There, one of the crewmembers of the Higgins boat stood over a massive 15.5 x 115mm machine gun and provided cover for the Marines, dressed in a flak jacket and helmet over his navy jumpsuit.

As the Higgins boat grounded itself at the beach at exactly 0300, the ramp in the front of the boat crashed down in the soft sand and allowed the Marines to get out, something they did in a hurry, lead by CPT Taylor. They quickly traversed the 200 meters to the start of what was left of the palm trees that had been napalmed by the F/A-18s one hour earlier. The Marines took great care securing the beachhead and road that overlooked the beach. Similar scenes took place on the beach designated "Fox 1" near Loa on the southern side of the island.

On "Dog 1", CPT Taylor lead his squad of Marines up to the road overlooking the beach when they came across a gruesome sight. Ten burned skeletons and something that was once a machine gun aimed at the beach. The bodies and weapons had been completely destroyed by the napalm that had been dropped, leaving only the bones of their bodies and the molten metal of the weapons. Very few of the Marines looked at the human remains that had been living breathing people only one hour earlier, killed and burned by the Cottish napalm. They marked the site for the support personell to collect the remains and give them a decent burial later before they moved on.

They didn't meet resistance untill two hours and six kilometers later, when they were in the outskirts of the town of Labasa, the province capitol.

Labasa outskirts, 0500 hours
Unbeknownst to the Cottish Marines of the 3rd Company, there were Fijian defenders in waiting hidden behind fences, hedges, buildings. You name it, they were hidden somewhere near it. The carnage was about to begin.

"Taking fire, taki... AAARGHH!"

The pointman fell in a hail of bullets while the rest of CPT Taylors 3rd Company threw themselves to the ground and hussled to whatever they could use as cover. Some jumped into ditches, others filed into buildings and headed for the top floors, killing anyone found inside. Several civilians became collateral damage in those room-clearings.

"Return fire! Return fire! Radioman! Get over here!" the Captain yelled. Those who hadn't started to fire yet obeyed the orders with pleasure and opened up with their XM-8s. The machinegunners placed their M249s and M60s on the bipods and started to fire short five-round bursts in the general direction of the defenders. Others threw M67 frag grenades before firing their XM-8s on.

The defenders' armament wasn't exactly the most modern in the world. Dual-barrel shotguns, old M1 Garands, AK-47s and even single-action revolvers just to mention something that they used with great effect against the Cottish Marines. The leader of the defenders were Gunvinder Singh, a emigrated Indian, looked at the Cottish soldiers taking fire thru a pair of binoculars from a manhole a hundred meters away from the Cots. They didn't see him. Gunvinder turned to his subordinate who stood at the base of the ladder that Gunvinder stood at.

"We are keeping them from entering the city just yet. We must maintain a constant pressure on them. They must not be allowed to gain a single meter without casualties. Understand?"

The subordinate nodded and ran off to relay the order while Gunvinder returned to look at the Cottish Marines. 'This will be a long fight...'

Labasa outskirts, 0620 hours
3rd Company had been reinforced by 4th and 7th Companies now, after taking severe losses. The only members of 3rd Company left alive was CPT Taylor, the Sergeant Major and 29 other Marines. The rest of the Company lay dead where they fell. Still, the Cots had captured almost 100 meters, and had gunships from the helicopter carriers strafing the area, shooting 20mm shells and 2.75 inch rockets at anything that seemed suspicious.

This didn't go by Gunvinder Singh unnoticed. He didn't expect the gunships, having had very little intelligence to work from. Still, the defenders had anticipated fighterjets, and had several FIM-43 Redeye MANPAD SAMs at their disposal. Though old, the Redeye was still lethal to the low-flying AH-1W SuperCobra gunships that the Cottish Marines used. The order Gunvinder gave the defenders was clear.

"Use the Redeyes. Shoot down their precious helicopters. Let's see how they manage without them."

Soon, the first Redeyes were fired, picking off SuperCobra after SuperCobra. Though they used the chaffs and flares extensively, it was to no avail, and within one hour, six SuperCobras had been shot down, with another three limping back to their carrier. Five of the six downed aircrews had been killed, but one of them survived. The two pilots had to be rescued, and quickly!
