The Shieald has been service for nearly 50 years in one design or another. However despite it's age it is still a highly valued defencive craft often found in close formation with fleet command ships and mineing stations.

It's globe like shape alows this craft to pitch and roll to bring all guns to bare in 0.7 seconds a 2 second improvement over the crewed versions of two decades ago.

"Triikor" Heavy Interceptor

The laterally mounted rail gun gives the Triikor a center of gravity shifted a full meter from the cockpit/engine line, and this gives the fighter some very interesting handling characteristics while rolling or turning.

Novice pilots are given a wide berth when flying formation, as this arrangement causes the fighter to swing wildly under high-G maneuvers until the pilot is intimate with this unusual center of gravity. But in the hands of an experienced pilot, this initial disadvantage becomes a dogfighter's dream, as the right touch can make the Triikor wheel around nearly twice as fast as standard fighter designs.

A wide barrel roll maneuver unique to this fighter is known as "rolling the gun," and is used by Triikor aces to roll out of the gunsights of a pursuer while braking to end up just behind and below them. Many a pilot's last words have been a surprised curse as a Triikor rolls out of her sights and tears the bottom of her ship to shreds a moment later.

Kaark" Attack Bomber

The bomb launchers can prep one round every 15 seconds making giving the craft a varaible fire rate of a full spread every 15 seconds to a single shot 3.33~ seconds.

The Kaark attack bomber carries quad plasma launchers mounted to either side of the dual cockpit in a 2 by 2 over under arangement, and has a very narrow field of fire. The forward crew position is manned by the pilot, who maneuvers the bomber and sets up the attack run, while the back seat is manned by a Weapons control officer who monitors the launchers,warns of incoming threats, and activates various ECM systems.

Fighters form the backbone of any fleet's fast response arm, but despite the fact that they can engage enemy assets quickly, their effectiveness drops off considerably if capital ships are present. While fighters can carry a variety of kinetic energy loadouts, the most powerful directed-energy system they carry is their own fusion drives. Thus dictating the need for eather a suicide run or the development of a weapons system that can direct small amounts of drive fusion.

Plasma bomb technology allowed engineers to funnel some of that maneuvering power directly into an attack system. The plasma bomb launcher shunts some of the drive stream directly into the launcher system, effectively bottling high energy plasma inside a shaped magnetic field.

The Hammer class of heavy Corvette lives up to its name by being hard, brutal and completely utilitarian in design.

When hiigaran engineers worked up the prototype for this class, their only concerns were lethality and survivability -- only a few moments' perusal of this heavy strike craft will show how well they succeeded.

Hammer class corvettes have been nicknamed 'Coffins' by their 3 man crews because they are the only corvette class vessels without any sort of crew area whatsoever. Every spare cubic meter aboard has been packed with targeting systems, weapon support functions, and armor plating, so that the only spaces left for crew are small cocoon cockpits that are sealed from the outside, with an armor plate, by a technician. The only way for a pilot to leave the ship without the help of a technician is to eject the entire cockpit cocoon

"Tempest" Multi-Gun Corvette

While designing the chassis was relatively simple, implementing a fire control system capable of handling the 6 articulated turrets called for in the specs required intensive software development. Other problems involved the reliability of the high-speed turrets under constant use, and finally engineers had to abandon traditional hydraulic turrets and replace them with a maglev system based on super-conducting polymers.

This system worked beyond expectation, allowing for high-speed target acquisition without increased wear and heat build-up in the turret assembly. The only drawback was that the incredibly high torque generated by the turrets can sometimes overwhelm the Tempest's gyro-stabilizers, and inexperienced pilots can find themselves tumbling uncontrollably through space until they can reset the turrets.

Early AI's were tested in the design phase of the Tempest as a replacement for WCO's, however after a gyro-stabilizer failure and turret reset the AI would often reguard anything moving as a target including ajasent turrets.
This lead to several intersting incedent reports and ultmatly the end of AI based FCS's.

Assault frigates are the workhorses of the somtaaw fleet. Their four heavy turrets give excellent coverage, while dual forward-facing plasma bomb launchers give it the ability to devastate any capital ship in its path. Directly behind the massive engine housing is the only arc where the assault frigate is incapable of directing any sort of firepower. This, and the relatively slow tracking of the turret guns, means that despite its heavy offensive punch and deep armor plating, the assault frigate should not be deployed without an escort of fighters or multi-gun corvettes.

The Vengeance was named in remembrance of the Burning of Kharak, partially because the design is derived from captured Taiidan vessels that had directly participated in the atrocity,and as such have earned their namesake as a major participant in the campaign that brought down the Taiidan regime responsible for the near-genocide at Kharak.

"Firelance" Ion Cannon Frigate

The Firelance class of frigate is one of the deadliest special-purpose combat vessels ever made. When Higgaran scientists finally made a breakthrough in directed particle beam technology, it was clear that it was just too large to mount effectively on the current class of capital ship hulls. Unwilling to wait for the evolution of larger hulls, combat engineers went to work wrapping a frigate class hull around the huge ion cannon itself. The result was the Firelance class of frigate, whose only real combat function is to deliver the incredible damage potential of the Ion Cannon to the battle. There are few sights more terrifying to the enemy than one of their ships caught in a web of flaring ruby beams.

Firelance is one of the least adaptable ships in the fleet. In order to aim the beam, the entire ship must be moved and the massive power requirements needed to generate the accelerated ion stream means there is nothing left to power point defense turrets or even redundant life support systems. So while the Firelance has a reputation as a giant-killer, it is very vulnerable to small strike craft

"Matriarch" Support Frigate

During the homeworld wars it became obvious that a Ship to service multiple strike craft quickly while still in the thick of battle would be needed. Kushan engineers went to work on a standard frigate and basically removed everything between the cockpit and the drives in order to make room for fighter docking pads, mounting five on either side of the ship's open spine--which serves as an access tube and power conduit. Four heavily reinforced docking arms were also added to allow for multiple dockings of corvette class ships.

Each pad and arm is packed with automatic repair equipment and plasma ducts for refueling. The Matriarch's crew module, normally spacious in a standard frigate, has been crowded in order to make room for a full engineering station, an emergency medical station, and rudimentary quarters for six spare pilots. These extra crew-members spend the entire combat mission prepped and suited up, ready to evac and replace wounded pilots who have managed to return their craft to the Matriarch.
