I'm Not Down: Robotstan makes amends with Auman

Ever since the destruction of Robotstan-Earth, things in the Robotic cluster have never quite been the same. For several years, nothing foreign came into the Robotic cluster. While normal trade went on as it always has, a certain air of fear has characterized diplomacy, trade, and exploratory missions.

And the source of this fear is Auman. The parliament, whenever it takes time to actually do something, always ponders over why Auman still hates Robotstan. Even though the destruction of a very profitable and diplomatically vital outpost of the cluster was let slide, Auman was still in the habit of taking shots at Robotstani freighters whenever they showed up close enough. It is a mystery to most parliamentary delegates as to why, even though Robotstan has, on numerous occasions indicated a wish to simply leave the event in the past, Auman still harbors a deep dislike of the Robots. After all, its not as though Auman suffered anything for its actions. Not a scratch on the paint of its warships, or a freighter so much as shadowed.

But not every nation can be expected to have such a benevolent attitude.

So, the Robotic Cluster has made ready its capital world, Nathanielstan, for a visit by Aumanii delegates in order to negotiate an official end to hostilities.

The Cluster Defense Force, based in Nathanielstan, forms up into a display formation. Headed by the Mick Jones, one of two superheavy cruisers operated by the RGF, the CDF consists of, besides the previously-mentioned vessel, another superheavy cruiser named the Paul Simonon, as well as six of the more standard-fare independent cruisers, plus a cloud of destroyer-escorts and destroyers, and whatever else is on hand in a time of need. It is not a feeble force, and has, attached to it, numerous smaller skirmishing squadrons, but the CDF is the only organized assembly of ships operated by the RGF.

On one of Nathanielstan's innumerable orbital facilities, Fedor Ulanbataar awaits the arrival of the Aumanii delegation...

The Aumanii Diplomatic Cruiser Legacy entered the system via spacefold, as was the method employed by the nation, and glided swiftly in-system. The vessel itself was no different from a military cruiser, though the mission dictated at least some finesse, thus the ship's listing had been changed for the time being.

'I hear the Overlord is going to ask these, Robostani, for a legion of indentured soldiers.' said the adjutant of Kulan Batara. Kulan, the official representative of Auman in this endeavour sat stoically and said 'Iam not at liberty to say Adjutant...Please, go tell the Captain to double scans of this system. We need to be wary.' the young adjutant, who's name Batara had never bothered to remember, nodded sharply and made way to the bridge.

When the boy left Batara locked the door to his diplomatic office, which was located in the deepest corner of the ship and turned back towards his desk which had a single, locked Attache case on it. Batara smirked slightly as he opened it and removed a single dataslate. 'Awesome.' said Batara to himself.

"Welcome to the Robotic Cluster, Aumanii Vessel Legacy. We are transmitting navigation data to you now."

The crew of the Legacy might want to take notice of the design of the assembled ships. Rather than the traditional 'linear' construction, the cruiser classes are all built as spheres. This greatly increases their robustness in combat as well as the coverage of their weapons systems, but the design itself is quite expensive, and the size and number of such ships is limited. But the RGF is still operates a capable combat inventory.

Fedor Ulanbataar watches as the Aumanii ship heads towards the station, and walks towards the large berth where the Legacy will be accomodated, or not accomodated if the Aumaniis decide that they would rather not be attached to the station. An honor guard assembles, made up of Palmach Infantrymen. While it is unusual for Robotstan to place value in what are seen as rather silly traditions, it is decided that it might make the Aumaniis more comfortable if they were treated in a more regular fashion. The 40 troops sent to the honor guard carry the standard service rifle, the SR. 5/8, but with magazines and such taken out so as to make them as non-threatening while still official-looking as possible.

Colonel Toliver stood on the bridge of the Legacy with the Captain of the ship, Lord Shintaine. Toliver stood in a combat space suit with its helmet tucked under his arm. 'These Robostani are too trusting.' said Toliver, not able to believe how naive his enemies were. Shintaine laughed as he looked over a report from Task Force command. The armada was in place to strike out of system and the LRR were ushering them in like royalty!

Legacy flew into the large docking bay of the LRR station gracefully. Observing full diplomatic procedure, while sending coded transmissions to the Task Force Flag vessel AuSD Tartarus. Though, nothing the Aumanii had done could be considered suspicious. The coded transmissions could be interpreted as anything. All communication between the Aumanii had been cordial and as it seemed, they were only here to conduct negotations.

Toliver had joined his company in the troop bay and given them their final briefing...

Fedor and the honor guard head towards the airlock, not exactly necessary for Fedor himself but vital for the survival of the 40 infantrymen.

A table is set up in the large lobby just outside the ship bays, providing an excellent view of the capital world of the Nathanielstan system.

"Greetings, honored delegation from Auman. It is a pleasure to host you here in Nathanielstan, and we wish most sincerely that we will be able to put the shameful events of our past in the past, once and for all."

The Cruiser sat silently in the docking bay, nothing seemed to stir inside. Suddenly, point defense weapons whirred and screamed into life. Opening fire on everything in the bay in sequential order. Nothing was left untargetted. Large, turreted cannon on top of the Legacy spun to the rear of the vessel and opened fire on the entrance in an attempt to destroy what ever mechanism was used to keep the docking bay pressurized. The idea was simple. Depressurize the docking bay and suck all resistance into space, then launch an assault into the station with a boarding party of eighty suicide troops.

------

Simultaneously, seven Aumanii battlefleets jumped in-system from several different points through out the system. All the fleets had their orders arranged before the battle and went about executing them as quickly as possible.

------

Aboard the AuSD Tartarus Admiral Ciritii coordinated the assault. Standing with his command staff in the holographic charting room, watching as representations of the fleet skittered across the black canvas of space.

'Its convenient how the Robostani lined their ships up in pretty little formations for us...' Ciritii commented as he watched the 4th, 17th and 9th fleets close to engage the enemy. His own fleet, the 20th, stood in reserve and organized the attack at the edge of the Nathanielstan system. With the intel they have recieved from the Legacy they were in a very good position to attack the enemy. Currently the remainder of the task force was moving into orbit of the objective planet. Their mission was to bomb all signs of industry on the world with Antimatter weaponry. In essence is it was a replay of the assault on Earth, though now the enemy would be able to defend themselves.

OOC:

Forthcoming post will detail the reason behind the attack.

Fedor watches in horror as the Aumanii cruiser opens fire, and orders the 40 infantrymen to run for cover as the bay slowly depressurizes and blast doors are closed.

All over the station, weapons systems go on-line, and about 500 palmach infantrymen rush to the docking bay, dressed in full combat gear including space suits. The Legacy is targeted by the squadrons of corvettes released from the station, and the on-station weaponry swivels to engage the attacking ships. Likewise, the antimatter cannon turrets on the other stations, as well as dedicated gun platforms, fire at the offending ships, while firing swarms of missiles at the ships as well. They intend to prevent the bombardment of the planetary surface until a significant portion of the population is able to escape.

And to those ends, freighters dive into the atmosphere, jettisoning cargo as they near the ground, and prepare to load up with noncombatants to evacuate.

The CDF wing immediately swings into action, and the destroyers release barrages of missiles and ion cannon fire before withdrawing under the cover of the cruiser classes. The Mick Jones and Paul Simonon take the worst of the attack, but give as much as they get. Their heavy antimatter cannons, as well as a host of secondary and defensive armements shoot at the Aumanii vessels while missile bays empty their contents. While horribly outnumbered, the two superheavies and six standards charge into the Aumanii fleets, firing all their weaponry and attempting to destroy as much as possible before their own inevitable destruction. Their spherical design allows them to absorb massive amounts of damage before being destroyed.

"Attention all combat ships! Move to cover the planetary evacuation! Draw the enemy combat strength away from the planet!"

The destroyers try to come around and put the Aumanii fleet between themselves and the cruisers, obliging them to move into the softer escorts and move further from the planet.

Meanwhile, as the first freighters rocket into space and engage FTL drives, loaded over capacity with evacuees, frantic calls go out to the other systems in the robotic cluster. Skirmishing regiments of destroyers assemble behind whatever cruisers happen to be in the system and prepare to hyperspace to Nathanielstan, although it will take at least an hour before any significant relief force arrives. And in turn, the other systems in the cluster foreward those messages to Valinon, Vernii, and other nations considered to be on friendly footing.

The general mood aboard the ships engaged in combat with the Aumanii is one of shock and disappointment.

It doesn't strike me as exactly fair that you'll just come in and destroy my fleet and a good deal of my industry, under the guise of a diplomatic mission, and having already destroyed an important trade outpost, and get away with it without any trouble.

I still don't understand why you want to do this to me. You already essentially ended Robotstan's involvement in the Sol system and killed a fair amount of people in the process, and I didn't do so much as fire a shot at you. The least that any normal nation can expect to do is, at the minimum level, put up a diplomatic fuss.

Because of your lack of resolve, Melkor got onto Mars practically unopposed. OCC: Its not as though there are many people who actually live in the Robotic Cluster. Plus, these freighters...most of them will probably get shot down anyhow.

But I never had any formal ties to your nation! No obligation to defend you! And plus, this is the first time you ever tell me this! And furthermore, I offer to help you now, to try and smooth things over, but no. You have to go around and screw me completely! Some comeuppance.

And plus, I'm not going to bring my allies, per say, in, just I want to inform Valinon and Vernii so I don't get left with you as the only thing around. Now just you listen:

1. LRR never had any obligation to defend you from Melkor.
2. To engage in open war against Melkor would have been suicide. The RGF was not much bigger as it is now.
3. Why didn't you tell me that hundreds of millions died? Hmm? If you had, I would have already piled money and ships at your feet, instead of being screwed and only now knowing the reason for it.
4. I don't like making people fight for me, or even asking them to. For LRR, the idea that they are getting destroyed because of stopping a voluntary military expedition, one that was already quite costly in lives and equipment, is a foreign one.
5. If you agree to stop this insanity now, without destroying my most profitable industry, LRR will supply you with massive sums of money, ships, equipment, and troops.
6. Again, why didn't you mention how many people died before? I never heard anything about it until just now! How can you hold me accountable when I never even knew the circumstances?

If you bother to tell the RGF ships what happened, they will probably stop fighting and all surrender. To be responsible for such a death toll, even if just barely by most standards, would break the heart of just about any Robotstani.

OOC: Vernii does have self-interest in the well-being of LRR. So far I will limit any involvement to discounted arms sales and protection of civilians that otherwise would be defenseless. Atrocities (like exterminating millions of people without provocation or option of surrender) will not be taken lightly.

Several days previous

Admiral Ciritii had embarked on this mission some three days ago. The plan was hastily drawn up by fleet command at the urging of Overlord Rosiro. None in fleet command believed it was possible to launch a planetary assault on such short notice and as usual, many in the higher echelon began to doubt the Overlords judgement. It was not until the arrival of the Overlord himself on Freehold Station that people began to realize the importance of the operation. Overlord Rosiro had all the officers involved brought to the massive briefing hall of the fleet base very early in the morning.

'Im sorry to have disturbed you so early in the morning gentlemen, but something just came up... said Rosiro as he dimmed the lights at the flick of a wand. As the hall went dark a large spherical projection became visible behind the Overlord. A murmur rose through out the assembled leadership. Admiral Ciritii came up beside Overlord Rosiro and spoke 'This my, friends, is the Robotic cluster. Home to our most elusive enemy, the Robostani. It has been a long time coming for these cowards and even though we dealt them a devastating blow on Earth it still did not end the war.'

The Overlord took over for Ciritii and detailed the situation 'Late last night we recieved a transmission from a system know as Nathanielstan. Apparently it was from the LRR government and according to the message they wanted peace. Foolishly they also enclosed the coordinates to their capital world, also called Nathanielstan.' Rosiro motioned towards Ciritii and he nodded

'Last night when the Overlord informed me of the transmission and subsequently his plan, I have to admit I was skeptical. But when I reviewed our intelligence I became a little more hopeful. The enemy is weak, especially after the last attack and hopefully, if they're gullible enough, we can catch them completely off guard. The assault will comprise of four waves. First, the AuCR Death Adder, renamed "Legacy" for the duration of the mission will fly unescorted into the Nathanielstan system and collect as much intel as possible before being found out. If they are not found out they will commence boarding actions against the target space station. The second wave will begin once "Legacy" has begun its assault on the objective. The second wave will be comprised of the fleets under Commodore Jet's command. The third wave will attain orbital superiority, take up threatening posture and most importantly. Only fire defensively. The final wave of the attack will be executed by my own fleet, when all enemy force has been subdued. I must stress the need for discretion when choosing your targets here gentlemen, please be advised. You all will be provided with more indepth tactical orders where necessary. Thank you for your time...'

As the battle in Nathanielstan drags on, things begin to look grim for the RGF. Due to the fact that the majority of the fleet is dispersed across the Milky Way galaxy and even some others, trading and exploring, there are only limited resources available for the defense of the Robotic Cluster, an area generally considered safe. After all, it never struck the RGF leadership that Auman still wanted to attack the robots, after the total destruction wrought on LRR-Earth.

While they fight as hard as they can, the RGF ships over Nathanielstan I steadily drop. Facing the combined firepower of a good portion of the Aumanii navy, quite possibly all of its offensive capability as far as the embattled captains and crews can tell, they simply cannot hold out.

The beginning of the end is signified as the Paul Simonon's engines give up the ghost. The ship itself is quite a sight. Badly misshapen, with chunks of the heavily armored hull simply dug out by sustained and concentrated Aumanii fire, the vessel lasted for a good half hour before the engines finally cut out. The bridge is among the missing chunks, and was probably a priority target. The captain and bridge crew all incinerated, and the ship's intelligence itself severely impaired, remaining gun crews try valiantly to siphon energy to weapons systems while the reserve batteries hold out. The engineers also work feverishly to restore at least minimal manouvering reactors, but to no avail.

The Mick Jones continues to fight, in a slightly better state, as the region becomes filled with wreckage. A good deal of the destroyers are lost, either destroyed or put out of action and forced to retreat, and half the standard cruisers are faced with a similar state of affairs, either taking the shape of a mostly-eaten apple, with external armor and portions of the structure stripped off, or limping away from the engagement towards friendly ports.

No ship in the Robotstani force has escaped damage, and most have recieved very heavy fire.

Apparently the Aumanii attack was going better than expected. The fleets hadn't even fully committed themselves and the Robostani were falling back, disorganized and terrified by the sudden onslaught. Admiral Ciritii couldn't believe the reports and started to think that they had over planned. These gains were not with out their sacrifices of course. The Legacy had been destroyed before the mission could be carried out. A setback, though not a crucial one. The 14th, 7th and 9th fleets cruised forward at a tremendous pace in a three pronged formation. The 9th fleet, commanded by Commodore Filiette, charged through the "middle" of the LRR fleet while the 14th and 7th moved to flank and encircle the enemy.

Ciritii stood-to in the charting room of the AuSD Tartarus, surveying the battle, which was represented insided a holographic sphere. 'They dont have a chance... uttered the ships weapons officer, Lieutenant Uhr. Ciritii himself, though not disappointed by the apparently stunning performance of his fleet, was still aware of the casualties being suffered. So far several of his ships had been shot down by the determined defenders of Robostan, though not enough to make their situation untenable, losses were regretable. The Admiral crossed his arms and sighed deeply 'Give the enemy every opportunity to surrender. This has already gone too far. Remember the objective... said Ciritii, a tone of remorse in his voice.

The Aumanii Armada had appeared suddenly and rushed the LRR defenses, suddenly and with ruthless precision. The gun crews of the Task Force picked there targets carefully. Firing missile and energy cannons only when there was a high percentage of hitting and disabling or destroying the enemy. The Aumanii were here to prove a point, not to commit genocide.

OOC:

Im not wanking when I talk about the "stunning perfomance of the ships" its just a response to what you wrote.

The CDF ships are no longer organized into any real formation, but the battle soon concentrates around the spherical cruisers. Being able to absorb tons of fire, they attempt to manouver out of their predicament, but find it impossible with the sheer concentration of Aumanii vessels. The destroyers, being smaller, faster, and much more manouverable, mostly escape the encirclement and rally themselves outside of the Aumanii lines, awaiting reinforcements.

The cruisers, the focus of a force many times their own size, are, after awhile, worn down to cratered and dismembered forms, large portions of their systems and crews gone. Finally, once the devestated Mick Jones looses power, the CDF is ordered to surrender. The cruisers, all very heavily damaged, prepare to evacuate crews and scuttle.

"Attention aggressor vessels, we surrender. Be advised; evacuation of the cruisers is commencing and will be followed by scuttling."

OCC: I assumed that you had already engaged in the battle...I would guess that it has lasted for mabye a little over an hour. I assumed that the amount of ships, apparently of good quality, being thrown against a significantly smaller force of Robotic vessels, would have overwhelmed them fairly fast.

OCC: Vernii, thanks. But I don't think there will be much of an LRR to speak of anymore. More like a vassal state of Auman. Of course, the wide dispersal of Robotic shipyards and the number of external facilities and non-resident citizens will mean that there will still be a measurable independent Robotic faction to deal with. So, I guess you can consider the mining deal still on, but things may have to be kept on the down-low nowadays.

By that night, news of palmer’s death had traveled back to the camp. spirits were low and colonel forbin felt devastated. even though he had only been in gamehendge for one day, he had already developed a deep hatred for wilson. he wanted desperately to help the revolutionaries, but without palmer, it seemed hopeless. he wandered slowly through the camp and passed errand wolfe, sitting by the fire with rutherford, who had returned that afternoon. he walked on and soon found himself outside of tela’s hut. forbin knocked and walked in. tela sat behind a makeshift desk in the center of a room that was littered with small cages containing spotted stripers, a tiny three-legged breed of animal. the unit monster sat in the corner. the colonel took a step toward tela and spoke. Schwaa?

The day of the attack, most of the Senate and Strategoi was on vacation, as was the Chief of State. However, immediately upon hearing of the attack, Minister of State David Borowitz called an emergency session of the Strategoi, in which the Strategoi were given Parliamentary authority to act on the actions taken by the Aumani fleet. They worked surprisingly quickly, and before the Chief of State or the Parliament could arrive and call the whole thing off, they churned out this statement:

The Parliament of Gurguvungunit condemns the actions taken by the Overlord of Auman and his forces against the Robotstani capitol. Simultaneously, diplomatic asylum is being offered to all citizens of Robotstan, and should remnants of the Robotstani fleet encounter elements of the Gurguvii Defence Force, they will be tendered all aid necessary.

Should the Overlord of Auman attempt any further actions against any Robotstani vessels under the protection of the GDF, they should be advised that Gurguvii vessels are authorized to defend themselves and their allies with extreme prejudice.

Should any Gurguvii vessels be attacked outright in response to this policy, it will be considered an act of war.

But what's the point of one of those? You can be defeated in that instance. Robotic ships can be everywhere and nowhere, and if they chose to hide a conventional military probably couldn't find them...or rather they'd be able to run away and make it very difficult for offending nations to dislodge them from neutral ports.
