Northern Lands of the House of Surrey
A pair of Merlin helicopters sped across the plains heading for the hill land beyond. Their skids were barely above ground level as the Roman Air Force pilots at the controls looked through their low light gear to guide the state of the art helicopters through the terrain now scattered before them.
In the back of the helicopters sat "A" squadron of the 14th Special Forces Brigade, weapons around them and equipment strapped to them. A Captain in charge of the mission checked through his mens equipment, as the load master gave the signal for two minutes to their LZ.
Behind the first two Merlins a pair of Puma Helicopter Gunships now appeared, heading in faster than the two transports towards a small flare that had appeared on their night vision systems, gradually growing.
As they closed on it the shapes of wooden huts could be seen, sheilded from the southerly winds by a bank of trees and also a dozen caravans that appeared to have been dug into place around the outskirts of the "town" as it had been designated on the satellite maps.
It was 0200hrs local time, and most of the "town" was asleep. One of the Puma's side-slipped over a make-shift firing range that the hillsmen had been training on earlier in the day whilst the gunner aligned his missile sights on the furthest building, identified as a barrack block for the irregular militia garrisioned here, the same militia that had attacked an army outpost three days before.
The other gunship targetted a pair of trailers with its rockets and miniguns attached to stubby wings on the side.
Lights came on in trailers as people awoke to the sounds or rotors, and the first door had just been flung open when the first rocket hit the barracks.
The building exploded sending pieces of it flying in all directions as another rocket hit the ruins of it a second later. That gunship then switched to miniguns as it strafed the other buildings on its target list. The other gunship did the same, obliterating the armoury building with a well placed rocket before destroying the "towns" generator plant sending all the lights out. The only light providers were from the flares of muzzles from weapons on the ground and in the helicopters.
A sole 20mm position was able to open fire on one gunship, wounding one of the crewman, before the crew were turned into chunks of meat by the twin linked miniguns of the second gunship.
When these two helicopters had finished their gruesome work the two transport's came in low, and touched down on the far side of the "town" allowing the troopers to jump off. These troops fanned out, and begun searching for survivors.
Any with weapons were shot down on site, whilst those without were subdued, usually with a round to the leg, or simply surprise, and then bundled into a corner to await pick up when the transports came back for them.
Within twenty minutes the operation was over. Twenty one people had been taken, of which three had been left behind to due overcrowding on the helicopters. A single salvaged pistol had been left behind, and three bullets had been thrown from the helicopter as they soldiers departed, the bullets had carved onto them the S of the House of Surrey, an all too clear reminder of who had been there.
Five minutes after the helicopters had left, a flight of four Roman Air Force Tornado's levelled the entire area with a cluster-napalm combination bombing.
