Managua, Nicaragua

Today, President Anastasio 'Tacho' Somoza Portocarrero, the son of the late anticommunist President Anastasio Somoza Debayle, announced that Roach-Busterian and Nicaraguan engineers would labor together to construct a canal in Nicaragua linking the Pacific Ocean with the Caribbean Sea.

"It will be an expensive, daunting, time-consuming project, but well worth it," the President announced before a press conference. "It will be of immense use, both militarily and economically. Its strategic worth will be inestimable."

Generalissimo J.L. has authorized the use of over 10 billion cans of Raid (1 can of Raid = $1.8989) to fund this great undertaking. The time it will take to build the canal is not certain, although J.L. said, "How long it will take is of no concern to either Mr. Somoza or myself. Building the thing is what counts."

Construction of the canal is expected to begin on Saturday.

J.L. announced that over 500,000 workers would be used to construct the canal. Each of the workers would be either soldiers, ex-soldiers, or anyone else with exceptional physical strength and endurance. When pressed, he finally admitted the project may take as long as 7-10 years.

And when we're done, may we use the leftover explosives to kill any Shoobans that survive the construction?

We are curious as to where the canal will actually be instructed and what the planned route would be. Quite frankly we cannot imagine this project being at all as difficult as the construction of the Panama Canal.

It will start on the Atlantic side at Bluefields, Punta Gorda, or San Juan del Norte, and will follow rivers to Lake Nicaragua, then cross the narrow isthmus of Rivas to reach the Pacific Ocean at San Juan del Sur.

Of course, my engineers could set up a nice lightshow. Be sure to use the Shoobans for dangerous jobs.

Ah, our suggestion would be to widen the San Juan river if doesn not accomodate ships already, and use that to gain access to Lake Nicaragua. That way you wouldn't have to blast through too much land and reduce the overall cost of the project. Just a suggestion though.

I will. Excellent idea, my friend. When the canal is complete, would you like to attend the celebration?

Your advice is excellent, and will be strongly taken into consideration. Thank you for the input. If it's not too much trouble, would you send a few engineers to help us out? I will pay them handsomely, of course.

Thank you. Each engineer and worker will be paid $100,000 up front, and an additional $2,500,000 each when the project is completed. Throughout the duration of the construction, all foreign workers (except Shoobans) will be staying in luxurious mansions, free of charge.

You need not pay us, Generalissimo. We're doing this out of our own pockets, mainly because the Army has been itching to try some of its new equipment out, and, I felt this would be a good opprotunity.

Generalissimo? Since when has he been back?

I don't know, but you're going.

Me? But - he doesn't like me...his wife...

Drop it. Go.

Reluctantly, secretary of state Dailey headed over to the conference room to make a call to the Generalissimo. "Hey, what's up," he said, slightly apprehensively. "First, the president wants to know if you're back in power and all that. Our intel seems to be again woefully out of date. Last we heard, you was in captivity. Yeah, anyways. If you need any raw materials, just let us know. It seems that you've more than enough engineers/workers."

There may be a few Sandinistas opposed to it, but we're not worried, because most of them were killed when we took over Nicaragua. They know better than to oppose us. If they crawl out of hiding, they'll be crushed like the cockroaches they are.

Construction of the Nicaragua Canal will begin today. Thanks to the large number of workers that have been generously provided by fellow nations, we may be able to complete the project in as little as five years.
