The glider with its three-man crew was going down, and fast. The engines had failed, and all support systems were going just as haywire. Fortunately, the comm systems was still functional for a while.
"Mayday, mayday. This is LAS 390 we have massive engine failure. We are going down somewhere in the Pacific. The geographical systems aren't working, but the coordinates are 0 32 S, 166 55 E..."
All the Liebermonkian Air Force heard in McAllen after those coordinates were static. The glider had crash landed. The search was on.
After entering the data into the machine, they Liebermoniank Air Force communication center found that the brave astronauts had fortunately landed on an island that was believed to be uninhabited. The name given to it by explorers centuries ago was Nauru.

---------------------------------------------

The nearest Liebermonkian cruiser was sent full-speed to the island. Its mission: find and rescue the pilot and two crew members of the ship. When they landed, however, the LNS Eldena was not prepared for what she would see on the island.

Imperial Letter to Liebermonk
From: The Imperial Republics of Mercitonia

We find there is a problem with your annexing Palau. We have sat up a Naval Fleet not so long before you claimed Palau. This may be a verry big problem because we have arranged to add this island to our Empire. Perhaps we could reach a peaceful agreement over it?

Sincerely,
Empress of The Imperial Republics of Mercitonia

OOC:

Sorry, calm down. Layarteb just had it as unclaimed in the spreadsheet. I didnt realize that it would be claimed already.

*did some reasearch*
turns out Easter Island is part of Chile, the Galapagos are part of Ecuador, and Palau (due to a few clerical errors) already belongs to The Lightning Star.
So I guess the only island I can really claim is Nauru. Sorry Chronosia, maybe another time. Fortunately, I started my RP on Nauru, so I can continue the claiming process. Again, sorry for the confusion, I should've checked on more then just the un-claimed list.

LNS Eldena landed at 2100 hours, Nauru time. The crew quickly filed out of the ship leaving only the bare minimum left abored. The search started immediatly. It would not take long, fortunately. It was only an 8 square mile island. They began working with the outer-ring of the island. Perhaps they survivors would go ot the water to make it easier to find. That was Liebermonkian army tradition.
The beach was a quick walk-through. Nothing out of the ordinary. They slowly worked through the foliage by the beach. A dense forest soon stood in their way. Perhaps the crash was near the center of the island, meaning that it would be hard for the survivors to reach the beach if injured. They were ordered to coninue on to the middle of the island.
As they progressed, they noticed that the trees appeared to be damaged, but not by natural causes. many had branches cut, and fruit picked. Eventually, the search teams reached areas where it was clear to tell that trees had been cut to the roots. Could the space team have done so much in so little time. Or could there be other people on the island? There were many quesitoned that needed to be answered, but the most important one will reman to be where is the team?

Easter Island & the Galapagos were separate claims so they're fair game.

Now to continue with the saga....

In the middle of the clearing of trees that the troops came upon was a pyramid like structure. Looking as if it has existed for centuries, the troops expected nothing inside the building, so they approached with no caution. Their immediate thoughts were that the crew entered the abandonded building for shelter and there is where they would be found. As they circled their way around the structure, they soldiers could find no entrance. Only a series of patterned bricks stood out. They were all exactly the same, except for one. One stepped forward: a language buff. He recognized that the one and only brick that was not the same, did not contain random symbols as the others did. Rather, it was a word. Quite direct in its meaning. The soldier translated it as "Press." So he did.
The brick fell inwards. Bit by bit, the other bricks fell through a whole in the ground. Obviously the one pushed out supported them and prevented the others from swinging their way into a trap hole. They were not seperate bricks, rather one large block.
As the dust settled from the opening a light from the inside blinked its way out. The troops rushed their way into the structure to the light. In there stood a group of men dressed in grass skirts. The frightening thing for the troops was the fact that the group of 20 men were holding rifles, ready to fire.

"Move!" One of the men grunted at the soldiers.
"If you try to run, I'll shoot you. Now follow along."
Bewildered, the Liebermonkian soldiers could do nothing but follow along the widing pathway through the structure. They slowly went deeper and deeper into the ground on the increasingly steep path. The walls were dingy and covered with mold that let out a scent that reeked and burned the nostrils. A few torches lit the path, but they became farther and farther apart leaving many dark areas. The soldiers often found themselves tripping as they followed the orders of their captors. They did not know the ground and did not know when to step carefully. Falling only made the island-natives more angry. The soldiers would feel a blunt hit to the back when they would fall. One soldier complained of this pointless beating. That only resulted in another hit.
THe path finally started to flatten, meaning that there could be an end to the march.
They finally reached a door. There was no lock on the door. Only a rusty old handle prevented it from swinging open.
"There. Go," a native instructed them.
They entered the room to find two men and a woman dressed in Liebermonkian Airforce dress.
The missing crew had been found.

The woman ran forward. "THANK GOD! You found us! They have held us captive in here for hours. We don't know why. They just have held us here. Maybe one of you can talk to them."
The only civilian of the crew stepped forward. On the ship as a photographer, he was not supposed to join the search. He could not resist it, however, for he felt he had to help. "Let me see if I can talk to them. I am without a weapon, I won't be a threat."
Without the permission or consent of the rest of the group, he walked to the door where the guards stood.
"My name is Dr. Amador of Mission, Liebermonk. Let me speak to your leader. I want to see if we can work out a deal with my soldiers." They obviously weren't his soldiers, however he wanted to appear important among them, like a diplomat.
The guards turned towards the exit and instructed him to follow. He walked out the door leaving a group of soldiers and the three airmen sitting there hoping for the best.
An hour passed.
Then it was two hours.
Two became three.
Finally the doctor returned. Everyone in the room immediatley turned to him, even the native guards. "We have come to a solution. They will grant us all our freedom. In exchange we must promise to protect this island and help develop it. In time this will become a state of Liebermonk."
Every stared at him, in complete bafflement. The had somehow gone from being prisoners and hostage takers to being countrymen.

No one ever found out exactly what happened in the three hour meeting. Only Dr. Amador and the secretive leader of the natives will know. In the following years the island quickly developed as a stopping point for world travelers as well as a major telecommunications center for the entire pacific offering its services to any nation that wished it. The culture of the Native Nauruans remained as its own. However they did adopt a few western ways. This event led Liebermonk to claim more lands throughout the ocean, so that its control could be widespread.

"A new age is upon Liebermonk. No longer are we bound to our tiny lands of Liechtenstien. In the past year, we have purchased Liebermonkian Hidalgo from Rome, traveled to an asteroid and claimed it as a colony, and now we have claimed Nauru. Next, we shall go to more unclaimed lands so that our citizens can have their own lands and not be restricted to slums or high rises. Our agricultural industry has tripled since the annexation of Hidalgo. We cannot stop these actions, especially if they help our nation and its citizens so much with so little cost. Now we lay our eye upon Easter Island. It is there that we shall go next. It is there that Liebermonk will grow. It is there where we shall be prosperous."
Foreign Minister Jacob Salinas finished his speech, and felt oddly proud of himself. He just changed Liebermonkian history.
