Project Name:Pushkan Sea Defense System
By: Comrade Nikita Orlov

I have heard that we have recently set up a sea surveilance system, HSS. I propose to use that system to our full advantage. I say we connect thousands of sea mines to the ocean floor, they will remain in wait, not interfering with the movement of our ships or those of our allies. Once our HSS detected an enemy ship we can release a mine in the closest proximety to the target and blow it up to pieces. If this is kept secret and properly executed our enemie's attacking fleet will be caught off guard and wiped out. Each mine will have a blast radius of 300 meters, we will need a total of 75000 mines to cover all of the areas which might come under attack from our enemies. Near the coast of Sourthern California, around Novaya Zemlya, around Wrangel Island and along the coast of Cameroon in Africa. The cost has been estimated to 140 billion rubles or 70 billion dollars.

I am interested in possibly becoming a patron for this project, in return for a full system around my region of course.

If you are interested, I will be happy to answer your questions. I urge you to let me be a benefactor.

Ciao

OOC: I guess you could call that...moderately impressive?

OOC: Oops, i am sorry everyone, forgot to mention that this is Earth 2 only, and this is a secret operation kind of thing, element of surprise is one the key components. I fixed the title now.

The Great Country of Russosweden is very interested in this deffencive system. If you could possible send the details to Grand Admiral Alexi Rosva head of Russoswedish naval research we would be much obliged. And if there is anything you need from us....

Please read the previous post made by me, i am sorry everyone, it is rather late and i am kind of tired.

Anyways i have to go now, be back tomorrow.... maybe.

The Empire of Squornshelous recommends that Pushka be careful with its new toy, especially concerning its placement around Wrangel Island. If this defensive deployment affects our shipping lanes in any way we will have to request that it be scaled back drastically.

What would your ships be doing near Pushka-owned, Wrangel island anyways? I do not remember any trading agreements between our nations, neither do i remember any document being signed, allowing you access to Pushkan waters.

As for your concerns, no need to worry, the release of the mines is controlled by a control center that has a top level of security. If your ships do not pose a threat their movement will be tracked by our HSS system but they will not be attacked, if trading ships come into Pushkan territorial waters without permission from the Pushkan gov't, they will be politely guided out of the Pushkan territorial waters by our coast guard.

The Empire of Cotland will wish to know the location of these mines, so that we can do our best to avoid them. We have utmost confidence in Pushkan technology, but as you know, "shit happens" sometimes. It would be too bad.

Friendly regards,
Imperial Government of Cotland

--Secret Transmission to Cotland--

Location of the mines:
30 Kilometers off Novaya Zemlya island's shore, the mine field is 5 kilometers wide and completes a full circle around the island
10 kilometers off Wrangel Island's shore, 3 kilometers wide, completes a full circle around the island

--other locations can not affect Cotland in any way and for that reason will not be desclosed--

OOC: Nice Russian, you studying it?

As you may remember, Wrangel Island is located a mere 200 kilometers off the coast of Squornshelan Russia. Although your clarification of the mines' placement has calmed our apprehensions, you must admit that we had a reson for concern, however slight. We will trust that you take care none of these mines drifts out of its assigned area.

OOC:
Normally, merchant ships are allowed passage into just about any commercial port, so long as they pay fees and tariffs according to local law. Is there a particular reason why foreign shipping is barred from your waters?

OOC: You got a couple of things wrong Squorchelous. For one i have never desclosed any information regarding the location of my mines to you or to anyone else but Cotland. I sent a SECRET telegram to Cotland and i never said that i publicized the file the contents of which are described in the first post of this thread. You might be worried and asking questions about the increased Pushkan navy activity near the Wrangel Island (which belongs to me, and you have no idea that i have anything similar going on in any other area of the world). You can ask that question but you should know that my reply would be that it is an internal matter and is conducted within Pushkan borders. Wrangel Island doesn't have any civilian ports, only military as well as some nuclear launching sites that are covered from satelites and you know nothing about. Understand now?

A mine with a 300m blast radius? Are you kidding? Is that some sort of sick joke? You would need over 50,000 tons of explosive, or one-tenth of an nuke.
Pushka

No, this is no joke at all, we use nitro glexirine, lots of it, it is protected by clay cover inside the mine's metal shell. Its like a big ass piece of dynamite with an electric fuse and spherical shape.

Okay, kid. Do the math.

You would need approximately .12 megatons (120,000 tons) of TNT to create a 300 meter blast. A blast of that size would sent out non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation for a radius of 4.9 kilometers. It would also cause an initial air blast with 4.6psi overpressure and a 3.6 kilometer radius, and a second air blast with 20 psi overpressure and a 1.4 kilometer radius. Ionizing radiation would go as far as 2.1 kilometers, with nearly 500rem (which is between 50 and 90% fatal).

In other words, you are detonating what is essentially a small nuclear weapon off your coast. Any invading force would be destroyed, but your entire coastline would become inhospitable for years. Your defense system is more destructive to your own people then any invasion force.

And keep in mind that I am ignoring the effects of water, which would reflect and intensify the radiation, cause tidal waves, and create artificial, radioactive storm fronts along the coast.

In other words: explosive of any sufficiently large size are DEVASTATING. You can't just assign a large number and pretend it works the same way as smaller, conventional explosives.

I really don't see what right you have to call me a kid, according to my age i am not really likely to be considered one, but i'll let that go. Now, about what you said. For one thing i'd like to see some kind of written proof that says that your calculations and the things you said are correct. Second, TNT is not radioactive meaning that the idea that its combustion and transition into gas is going to produce some kind of lethal radiation i just don't understand. If you disagree with my reasoning i invite you to ignore my nation. But please try to provide some proof for your claims first, this is rather interesting to me.

Also do you speak Russian? That would make it a bit easier for me to speak to you.

I apologize. I did not mean to be insulting, I do not speak English very well myself, I am Japanese. My Russian is not very good, and I certainly don't know enough to speak about mathematics and the like.

Я не говорю хорошего русского (I don't know if the NS forums will support Russian script, I do not even know if I used the right letters anyway).

In anycase, a common misconception is that radiation only comes from nuclear and other nonconventional weapons. However, ANY sufficiently large explosive will create radiation, including TNT. An asteroid will create radiation.

(EDIT: As the NS forums seem to support Russian letters, I'll see if I can speak Russian, just don't expect much. Любой большой взрыв создаст радиацию, включая TNT. Даже астероид создаст радиацию.)

Again, I am sorry if I was insulting, I did not mean to be. Я сожалею

Nechego....bivaiet.

Okay, then i'll reduce the radius to lets say 20 meters per mine that should still cover enough ground, especially since i am making more then enough anyways.
