Trolsk
11-03-2005, 19:13
Very well, the Emperor of Trolsk is willing to buy up 100 of these to form 2 divisions in our newly re-organised military. We shall pay the total in one lump sum from our Military budget of 9000000000 USD per Month, as calculated using the systems avaliable in the guide to this forum. We also invite you to join our trading act, please go forth and view our international topic. The Holy Emperor of Trolsk would like to further our businesses at a later date.

OOC: Well, you've got to remember that the people who just pop on here looking for super big hi-tech machines; the T-72 is neither big by MBT standards nor at all hi-tech. Furthermore, nothing's really stated to show that you've overcome the T-72's notorious autoloader problem, which may be a turn off for people like me who just know enough about tank design to get themselves in trouble.

A Pwnage Government G80 dropped the T-100 right in the middle of a highway during rush hour, blocking traffic until the tank could be claimed.

Two agents went to collect the tank, driving it to the Imperial Palace where it was draped in a silk ribbon and a sign saying

HAPPY BIRTHDAY EMPEROR!

Needless to say, the Emperor was thrilled and immediately took it out for a spin. The following day this was the headline:

"Sixteen people killed by the Emperors new toy.. ehh, "hunting vehicle"!"

[Okay, I see a couple things here that make me cringe, so I'm going to address them.

Chobham is an armour system, not an armour unto itself. It uses high-strength steels, composites, dense metals (such as DU or tungsten), and dead space to create an extremely effective armouring scheme. It isn't possible to make the system lighter without removing things that are absolute necessities. Now, you can go heavier by using denser alloys, but that makes it more expensive and kinda counters the point of this tank.

Buckyballs make piss poor armour. Yes, they are about the hardest thing on the face of this earth, but so are diamonds and if you take a chisel and hammer to them they will break. Considering that an Abrams-fired sabot delivers about 7 million joules of energy, I can't see buckyballs being anything other than a fake security blanket. Also, buckyballs cost about $300,000 per gram, so that three tons of buckyballs is going to add $272 billion to the price of that tank. You know, you could buy a brand new Doujin for that kind of money.]

ooc: errk. Someone told me that it was lighter than RHA. I'll change it to no weight difference, except for the lightened version, which is basically eggshell armor.
And buckyballs that don't rupture upon impact are really a Post Modern weapon, so I don't really encourage its use in strictly MT warfare.

[Physics don't change with time, unless some law of physics is fundamentally wrong. It doesn't matter if it's now or a hundred years from now, buckeyballs on their own will never make any kind of armour. In fact, I'd rather bet on paper.]

A chobham style armour system weighs less for a given RHA than steel, MassPwnage. But as SS says, it isn't a material, it's a system of layered materials and spaces. And, if you reduce the thickness of the materials and use lighter ones, it will become lighter, and far less effective. It would probably be possible to increase the effectiveness of the armour without increasing the mass by using more exotic ceramics and composites, but I'm not a materials engineer.

[OOC: Here's the entire thing written up by Armacor, originally invented by Agnosticum:

The Armor incorporates a totally new design never before seen on the battlefield, straight from the Armacor laboratories. The Armor will utilise a diamond helix bonded to and around a buckyball matrix, layered in 240 nano-meter strips. There is a total of 208,333 layers of this matrix (5cm). This is then covered by the Indium/Osmium-Germanium mix 2nd Gen Supercooled Coil. This is an innovative approach to cooling the layered plates. They are filled with supercooled liquid Xenon and when a round impacts, the liquid gasses out to counter the heat while the metal coil itself is used as a heat conductor to dissipate the attack it will render that portion of the coil useless but should still enable it to work on other parts of the tank. Especially good against HEAT. Finally there is a thick layer of NxRA Ablative Armor Blocks, up to 14cm in some places. This provides up to an additional 1000mm RHA, for a total of up to 4500mm RHA. (max. real thickness 200mm).

--------

The price is understood, but the general concept behind it I assume is that the countries which produce this armor, which can be called a 'buckyball composite', would be able to mine, produce, and render these materials cheaply and effectively - meaning, that the technology of production would be perhaps around 2007.

The single most important issue with the 'buckyball composite' is that nothing bonds well with C60 buckyballs, and that nothing includes diamonds. So, back in the day I added to that armor a RENE N6 third generation crystal superalloy, but then I figured everyone was right and decided to throw out the buckyball armor and came out with another tank - which I never wrote stats for...and I think I will now.]
