Equipment/technology database idea

Memorandum from Ivan Denisovitch to all nations
I had an idea, to create a database system (on a separate forum) that housed technology and equipment from designers all over nationstates. Then, anyone who wanted to use any of the technology would just pay a 1% of their GDP to have access for one week, in which time they could use any of the technology/equipment listed. When the week expires, they have to immediately stop using the items.
If they wish, they would be able to purchase the production rights for the products directly from the producer via the forum, to use indefinately. The money gained from this could be distributed amongst the designers, with say 20% being kept in reserve to been given as a weekly prize to the designer with the most 'sales'.
I am asking for the opinion of all designers on this issue, as I believe it would be a very good idea. It needs refinement however, and comments are welcome.

Interesting...But you would have to be sure that no designs overlapped in ideas. Like for instance, at this moment I'm building a big as space station for my Fleet HQ...someone else might just have something similair only smaller...so a smaller nation will get the smaller cheaper and less exstensive one so they dont have to pay much. The better design gets pushed out of the picture. See what I mean? But other than that...awsome idea.

Bigger =/= Better

No they pay a subscription fee to be able to use all tech there for a week, and only purchase what they like, if they like. As long as they are subscribed, they can use any technology free of charge.
I think a lot of larger designers (pop. wise) would be interested in this, as they are not worried so much about the money, more about getting praise and recognition of their work.

Its a great idea, but I belive it should be un sort of like a library where you cant check anything out. You would collect all the designs and technology you can find, store it on another site, then sell the production rights only. That way everyone could always find what they need.

That would be like the international mall, or other similar things. But not if the items were not sorted by creator, but by product type. That would let customers see all the options in one place, and it would be good competition for the designers.

yea, i think that sounds great.

I like to be able to control who gets my ships, and I also like to make a profit or at least recoup investment costs on designs, so Im not interested. Sorry.

I am not asking for people to get involved yet, I was just asking for people's ideas/opinion on the subject.
IC:
Praetonia, it seems that you misunderstand the situation. You will be able to control who gets your equipment, look at the most recent suggestion I made. You get all profit from the sale of the equipment, it would just be a database of good ideas, but from a multitude of designers. You still get the say on who purchases. All that is different is that many designers will compete in one place, but unlike IM or other similar ideas, the designs are sorted by what they are, not who they are designed by. In addtion, you would make more money as people pay a small amount to have access to the database, and this money would be distributed around.

OOC: Sorry, that was OOC. But ok that sounds better... I'll consider it.

OOC: I would prefer a more airtight system that is similar to copyrights that protects the intellectual property of the creator of the technology. It sounds decent enough in theory but I think there are too many possible loopholes in the execution.

OOC: I will post what I told Praetonia:
Prae says:
What if they just build anyway?
Intelligent Neighbors says:
Then every person who is part of the database (members and designers) will have an obligation to kick their ass. Plus, the digitally sign an agreement when they sign up that states that if they steal it, then it is considered a godmod to use it.
Prae says:
I see
Intelligent Neighbors says:
Also, the risk is there with normal storefronts as well.
Prae says:
But if they have access to the designs when they have membership, IC they have the designs, yes? So it cant be godmoding to make them, only IC illegal.
Intelligent Neighbors says:
No, they only have IC access when they purchase them from you.
Prae says:
Ah right
Intelligent Neighbors says:
Before that they only have an IC description, the information is OOC.
IC:
I would like to ask all nations reading this to offer any advice or comments they may have, as the more feedback we get the better the service will be when and if we release it. This is just an idea currently.

Hmm... so it's kinda like a place where you can compare ship stats in all areas, but you can't use the ships unless you buy them from the manufacturer?
Then.. in essence it's a product list across all storefronts and manufacturers. Sounds interesting. TAG

You are correct.
Currently I am in discussion with Huzen Hagen about combining this with the automatated system he is developing (based in PHP and a MySQL database) to give a greatly streamlined service. Stay tuned for information.
