The Riot

"We are sick and tired of the so-called Emperor and his tyrannic rule! We want a return to the Commonwealth and its corruption so we can get to do the stuff we want to do!"

The criminals in the city of Binari, a small penal city populated by 41 000 souls. It was located 90 kilometers from the border with the USSHR, and now it demanded its independence. Unfortunately, the criminals had forgotten that they were all in fact criminals and had very few civil rights in Cotland when they made those claims. As such, the government didn't take much notice of it at first, and gave the police orders to maintain dicipline and order in Binari. That was before they assaulted the police stations and grabbed the police's weaponry. Now, there were eleven brigades surrounding the city, including two Guards Brigades, ready to enter the city and demolish all resistance.

The government had given the inhabitants a chance to lay down their arms and surrender, and the civilians a chance to flee the city. Of the 41 000 inhabitants, 17 000 were non-combatants. Of those 17 000, a total of 14 000 had taken the chance to evacuate. That left 3000 civilians for the commanders to worry about, most of them women and children, either family or collaborators to the criminals.

Part I - The awakening

As the morning sun rose, Dmitri saw out his window overlooking the highway and didn't believe what he saw. On the horizon, no more then 5 kilometers from his house on the outskirts of Binari sat military vehicles. As many as his eye could see. He had heard of the ultimatum that the pompous "Emperor" had given, but that had ended yesterday. Dmitri and his friends had been drinking all night, and now the party was going to end for sure.

"Joe, get me those binoculars. Quick!"

Joe grabbed the binoculars, Zeiss 50x10, and threw them to Dmitri.

"Don't throw them you idiot. What if you broke them? Then you'd have to go downtown and steal some new ones. Moron..." Dmitri muttered before taking another look, this time thru the binoculars.

He didn't like what he saw. It was soldiers alright, and they were digging in. He couldn't see a... wait! There it was. The regimental banner.

"8th Guards... 8th Guards! Oh my God!" he said before he ran to the phone. It was dead. The bastard soldiers had cut the power to the city. Damn them! Now he had to drive to Mr. Podarg and tell him what he saw. Running down to the garage, Dmitri got his old Ford Escort running and drove as quickly as he could downtown, to the Fiesta Strip & Bar where Mr. Podarg was.

Entering the strip-joint, he saw Podarg's gorillas standing watch outside. Walking up to them, one pulled out a gun and aimed it on Dmitri.

"Don't shoot, don't shoot! I've got important news to Mr. Podarg. It's about the Cottish Army!"

"What about it?" one of the gorillas asked, clearly amused by the idea.

"They're standing on the city's doorstep. Now may I see Mr. Podarg?"

The gorillas looked at each-other and confered for a minute, after which one of them walked in for a minute before he was followed by Mr. Podarg.

Podarg was the lead criminal in Binari, having served time for murder when the new form of government came into power. Not being able to give the murderers the death sentence, the Emperor had decided to ban them from ever going anywhere else the Binari. It was the safest for Cotland. A dashing man, 196 centimeters high and filthy rich on bloody money, Podarg was the uncrowned king of the Binari. Now however, he was scared pale.

"You, tell me what you saw! Quickly before I kill you myself!"

"Sir.. sir, I saw tanks, soldiers, the works. Right outside my house, no more then 5 kilometers away. I looked at them thru a binocular, and they are digging in. The unit I saw was the 8th Guards Brigade sir."

Podarg didn't reply. Instead, he turned to one of the gorillas and wispered a few words in his ear. Twenty minutes later, the city was arming itself with weapons taken from the policestations. It was time to fight.

Two hours later, the first jets flew over the city. By now, the criminals were busy making hideouts, traps and mentally preparing themselves to take on the military might of the Imperial Cottish Army.
