[Earth II] The Expansion of an Empire

"Today, in a startling announcement, the government of the Democratic States of Colodia has collapsed and utter anarchy has been wretched upon the entire land. But we bring you live to the Emperor on this development.

"Ladies and gentlemen of the Empire. It is with due regret that the DSC has become anarchic. The people there are in serious trouble and need our help. This is a glorious time for the Empire and we will be seen as liberators to these people who need us more than anything. That is why today I am announcing that the Empire of Layarteb will be expanding the province of Layarteb to include Virginia, Kentucky, Washington D.C., and Maryland. We will also be expanding Ynoga to include Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and Panama. Lastly, we will be expanding the territory of South Eastern Virginia to include Colombia. Thank you and have a good day."

OOC: Off to class in 6 minutes! Sorry will have more later today...

Weeks Earlier

"The situation in Colodia is becomming grim," the General of the Air Force said, "we have to act now. If they go under we'll have a chance to connect Ynoga and South Eastern Virginia and a chance to solidify Layarteb to the boundaries we once invisioned! Sir, we'll need to take action quickly." And so it was done, there was no more convincing necessary.

If Colodia had become a rogue state, anarchy ruling it's masses, the Layartebians would act. They would seize the remainder of Central America and Colombia, linking both Ynoga and South Eastern Virginia. In addition, they would flood south to a line at Virginia and Kentucky, making a formal and final border for the Layartebian Empire.

That was weeks ago...

Present Day

Elements of the 1st Army moved into territories south of Layarteb in addition with elements of the 3rd Army to provide rear security. Elements of the 2nd Army moved from South Eastern Virginia into Colombia and elements of the 4th Army moved south from Ynoga into Nicaragua and Coasta Rica, Panama being their ultimate goal. Air Force and Naval units followed. Nearly the entire Layartebian military was on point for the invasion with close to six and a half million soldiers of the army, practically all that was left, moving into Colodian lands. The invasion came at a good time. The entire Layartebian navy was still mobilized because of the war in Europe and the naval exercises done months earlier. The Air Force and Army took part in those exercises and they were ready to go.

The first units moved into enemy territory and met instant resistance. Border guard units still loyal to the Colodian government would fight to repell these foreign invaders, granted they were fighting for nothing. In true blitzkreig style, Layartebian aircraft and armored units pounded the positions constantly, suffering moderate losses in the process.

Colodia was once an ally of the Empire of Layarteb and that would make the cities easier to take as well as the major population and military centers. Diplomatic officials were already on their way to the major cities and the capitals to work out deals with the former governorship and governmental figures to hasten the situation and to make the take over that much smoother. The less people that had to die the better...

Sporadic fighting along the borders intensified as day turned to night. The biggest fighting was along the border of Layarteb. Along Colombia, it was mostly quiet, mainly because of the terrain. In Central America though, the fighting was as brutal. Artillery and aircraft were being used heavily, bombing enemy positions from afar as the main infantry and armored forces drove fourth. The push was quick and brutal, a true blitzkreig style attack. The Layartebian land and air units assaulting the Colodian border defenses and main routes of transportation were the most experienced of the Layartebian units. Special Forces had previously been inserted into the main road networks to disable any defenses.

Diplomats would be arriving as well, to discuss and concern themselves with peace rather than war for these territories.

"And today, reporting from the front, we have great news. Kentucky has fallen to Layartebian forces and diplomats. Only hours ago, diplomats sent to Kentucky brokered a deal with the local warlords and surviving governmental officials. Fighting has finally ceased there as the toll remains to be counted. At least seventy Layartebian soldiers are dead with probably some four to five hundred Colodian warlords and their militiamen dead as well.

"On the other fronts, particularly Maryland and Virginia, diplomats are in negotiations but nothign has come just yet. Layartebian diplomats report being deadlocked with warlords and surviving government officials. It will most likely be a matter of hours or even days before the situation is resolved. Fighting on the borders has subsided as Layartebian forces have pushed some fifty miles inland in Virginia and all the way to Baltimore in Maryland.

"In Central America, Nicaragua is close to falling to Layartebian forces. Managua, the capital, is the last hold out of resistance fighters, some six to eight thousand militiamen from three different warlords. Along with them are about sixty-five governmental forces. Diplomats have been unable to negotiate a peace and it has cost, thus far, some two hundred Layartebian soldiers.

"In Colombia, Layartebian forces have finally reached Bogotá and Medellin. Negotiations are proceeding well and violence has yet to erupt from the land. Layartebian forces poised for the strike are offering free passage to all governmental officials to the country of their choice.

"Information coming out of Costa Rica is less than any other area. Layartebian diplomats have not arrived and reports are showing a resistance force in excess of twenty thousand with armor and significant equippment. Once the safe passage through Colombia and its annexation are finalized, Panama will be the force of reason. After it's fall, Costa Rica will be poised for a two front strike of significant force.

"That is all for tonight..."

"In the news this afternoon, significant developments along the fronts has been made in the past few hours. First and foremost, Kentucky and Colombia have raised the flags of the Layartebian Empire. This is a most glorious day for both countries and the Empire as a whole. The situation in Colombia was bloodless, though reports of rebels in the jungles presents a major but undiscovered problem for future operations. In Kentucky, some seventy-eight soldiers were killed by local militia and warlords, whom lost in the hundreds themselves.

"In Maryland and Virginia, the fighting is severe. Inside Baltimore, the situation is grim. Two Layartebian aircraft were shot down only hours ago as they bombed resistance positions in the southern area of the city, the most heavily defended portion. Resistance fighters have some four to eight thousand insurgents inside the city, all poised to defend the city at all costs. In Virginia, the fighting is in four major areas: Richmond, Norfolk, Blacksburg, and Waynesboro. At least a hundred Layartebian soldiers have been killed throughout Virginia with at least ten times that many resistance fighters killed, a number expected to skyrocket as the Layartebian military surrounds all four cities and strikes them from afar.

"In Panama, the canal is under Layartebian control after a brief but fierce firefight that claimed the lives of six Layartebian soldiers. A force of two hundred resistance fighters were either killed, wounded, or captured at the canal. In Panama City, fighting is sporadic while diplomats negotiate with former governmental officials. In addition, in Colón, fighting is intense as it is along the Costa Rican border.

"In Nicaragua, after intense, non-stop bombardment, that has almost leveled the city of Managua, negotiations are underway as a temporary cease-fire has been declared. Resistance fighters will be looking for immunity but whether they will recieve it is questionable.

"Still, the major hold out seems to be Costa Rica. Deposed fighters from Colombia, Venezuela, Virginia, Kentucky, Maryland, and elsewhere that the Layartebians have been engaged in, including Kaliningrad, have flocked there to put up a final stand against the Layartebian military, which is tactically at an advantage, prepared to assault the nation from both the Panamanian and Nicaraguan border as well as from the coasts. Predictions put some thirty-two thousand insurgents inside the country, centered at San José and Cartago. What will happen there is anybody's guess but it will most likely be a long seige before any incursion by Layartebian ground forces.

"Elsewhere, reports of a peace in Ireland have been brewing..."

OOC: Doing this through news reports: Good or no-good?

Layartebian News Network

"And this evening we have some major developments in the war for expansion. In good news, the city of Baltimore is near falling, the continued and relentless bombing of it finally being felt by resistance fighters as there is little left. Word of the possibility of surrender is non-existent. In Virginia, fighting at Waynesboro has subsided after resistance forces were surrounded by airborne troops. The outcome for them, has not been nice. In Blacksburg, a temporary cease-fire has been declared for negotiations. In both Norfolk and Richmond there have been NO NEW developments.

"In Panama, Colón has surrendered to Layartebian forces but in Panama City, no such end looks in near sight. Things are dicey there as they are with Baltimore and we have been led to believe that the events will be almost a mirror of each other.

"In Nicaragua, negotiations have halted and the cease-fire withdrawn as guerilla fighters in the backlands destroyed another Layartebian supply convoy. The official statement from the general is, 'We will defeat these little rats, wherever they hide or sleep, they will hide and sleep in fear that a bomb will fall on their heads.' We have no new developments.

"In Costa Rica, Layartebian aircraft have begun bombing key targets within the country as warships pound the coastline. Information is limited as the nature of the conflict is limited.

"Now in reports from Ireland..."

"News from the front is good today. Layartebian forces have secured the last holdouts in Maryland and Virginia, defeating resistance fighters with a final swoop of aircraft, armor, and infantry.

"In Panama City, a surgical strike has rumored to have killed the resistance leader as fighting becomes even more sporadic.

"In Nicaragua, Layartebian airborne soldiers landed just miles from the main rebel headquarters, defeating them soundly with no losses. Negotiations were underway again as of two hours ago though it is doubtful they will end the same way the previous ones have.

"Lastly, in Costa Rica, Layartebian aircraft and naval vessels have begun a much more heavy bombardment. This non-stop bombardment of rebel positions, supply lines, bridges, and any other targets of value for the resistance will hopefully drive them to surrender through overly low-morale."

"In the news today, only Costa Rica remains. All other former Colodian territories have surrendered their sovreignty to the Empire of Layarteb. All-in-all, between these territories, the Empire of Layarteb has lost an estimated $259 million worth of equippment and roughly 6,293 soldiers with another 7,200 wounded, at least. Enemy casualties are in figures upwards of 82,000 between all territories, with the heaviest fighting being in Nicaragua, Panama City, Baltimore, and Virginia.

"Costa Rica, on the other hand, has been the target of non-stop shelling and bombing for a week now. Reports of lulls in Layartebian bombardment have proven to be false and resistance forces claim that it has lost under 500 soldiers but that well over 20,000 civilians lie dead, as a result from Layartebian bombardment. Layartebian officials cite that resistance forces have probably lost between 8,000 and 13,500 with civilian casualties under 2,500, mostly as a result of misguided weaponry and the 'fog of war.' No Layartebian ground forces have been deployed to Costa Rica and only a single aircraft has been confirmed shot down, thus far, having sustained enemy fire from a surface-to-air missile site and exploding mid-air. The pilot was killed instantly."

Inside the Imperial Citadel, Carthage

Prime Minister Steve read the news report, stood up, drank a shot of whiskey, and then promtly shouted:

"DAMMIT!

How is this possible?!? The Panamanians should have been able to hold their own! Colodia had god knows how many soldiers there, the Panamanians should have been armed and trained to the teeth! Now we'll never get control of the Canal! Never!"

Seeing how the leader of his nation was enraged, Kilgir, known as "The Sultan of Assasins" stepped out of the shadows to give advice. "Sir, I know a, ah, way to make sure that Layarteb can't use the canal either.Ah~ah~ahhh."

"That's impossible, Kilgir! We're talking about Layarteb here! Layarteb!Even if we wanted to risk war with them, we have enough problems of our own! Those damned pirates are raiding our navy and bases! Nowhere on the coast, save Carthage, is safe! In our current condition, Layarteb would wipe the floor with us!"

"M'lord, have you forgotten who you are speaking with? I am, ah, the greatest assasin in the east, the world maybe. I have blown up entire cities right under the noses of some of the best trained troops in the world. I have killed generals while they were surrounded by the most expensive bodyguards money can buy! I could surely plan an attack on, ah, certain military targets with ease, Ah~ah~ahhhh."

"Even if I say yes, who can we send? Our soldiers are no good, foreign mercenaries are too expensive and bad for saftey, and we certainly can't send you!"

"You are forgetting someone, m'lord..."

"Who do yo-- You don't mean them?!?"

"The very same, sire."

The Prime Minister slumped into his chair.

"Let me think on this. I shall give you my answer in the morning."

"After another week of continued pounding by Layartebian forces, Coasta Rica still shows no signs of surrender. This marks two straight weeks of continued bombardment from naval ships and aircraft. Estimates put at least a quarter of the resistance fighters dead and the remainder either in hiding or in the process of fleeing. At the border, refugees have been turned back and resistance fighters have tried on more than six occassions to storm past border checkpoints. Each time they have failed."

Secret telegram from the Soldiers of the Blue Crescent to the Costa Rican resistance.

Our organization is willing to supply arms, training, and men to fight for your cause. Layarteb's Imperialistic ambitions must be stopped. Have you seen what they have done to the once proud Panamanians? They have turned them into naught but slaves! With our aid, you can fight off Layartebian opression and create a free Costa Rica once again!

OOC: Just for your information, the SBC(which stands for either the Sons of the Blue Crescent, which is the political wing of the Greater SBC(GSBC) or the Soldiers of the Blue Crescent) is supposedly at war with the TLS government. However, in times of crisis and/or when both sides can benifit, these differencies are "put aside".

It will be hard, but we have the ability to get limited amounts of men and weapons into any situation. Now, until we somehow weaken the Layartebian Blockade, we won't be able to get in anything larger than, say, 12 men and 50 AK-Z's(and that's probably the best we could do, and it would be hard), but these are top-notch soldiers. It's only a matter of time and patience.

OOC: Uh... any ideas as to how I could get into your nation? Because I know that even though you talk tough,no one could completely, 100% seal the borders. They could do 99.7%, but not 100%.

Indeed. I imagine you're best bet would be through small ships that could sneak past the blockade and minor incursions across the border but for that you'd have to land on Layartebian soil, so it would be your best route to go through teh water to the land via small boats.

"Fighting has continued heavily in Costa Rica. Rebel forces are reported to be in full retreat though. Layartebian bombardment from the air and the sea have pushed rebel forces into two locations: Cartago and Convento.
