Official Statement; United Federation of Germanische Zustande

The camera panned over the cavernous chamber. Some ten thousand Federal Representatives, Senators, Councillors, Judiciaries, various other dignitaries, and the Chancellor were met in a joint session of all the bodies of the Federation Government.

Along with the thousands of officials, another fifty thousand were seated in the Audience. Reporters, Civilians, lower-tier government workers; all these had found this announcement important enough to attend.

Alleun walked at a brisk pace through the grey corridor. A small Holocube rested in its case, gripped tightly by the Liason's right hand. The masses of men and women slowly came into view. He neared the end of the tunnel; light spilled into the exit of the long hallway.

A single bead of sweat dropped onto his Robes as he stepped into the light.

The podium stood before him. Alleun stepped forward; his footsteps echoed through the enormous chamber. Sleek, mettalic and gray, he placed the Holocube gently upon the unadorned metal block. About him, the flags of the Federation hung unfurled. Hundreds of flags-- no, thousands. Not only the flags of Federal Worlds, but Colonies, Outposts, States. Even entire peoples.

Behind him, a raised circular platform began to pulsate rhythmically with white light. A spherical map of the Kaluza/Thorn system formed. Every pristine detail captured, right down to the flashing of lights in the forward lounges of the larger ships.

Scanning the faces of the crowd, Alleun's grim displacement was noticed by all. Clearing his throat, he began. "People of the Federation, yea, even of the Multiverse, these are troubled times."

A record of major historical events in the past milennia appeared behind the stern-faced man. "Our people have exercised Justice upon those who have broken the law for ages untold. Many wars have ravaged our people. We have remained, however, steadfast in our ideals. In our history. In the mandates of the Ancestors."

Terrible sadness showed upon the faces of many; Grim determination on the faces of others. Alleun milked this for all he could. "The Kanuckistani were once allies in the Great Shivan War. Our peoples fought side-by-side in great battles. But in those desperate days, allies could not be chosen for their honor or loyalty. Alliances were borne of desperation," he sighed.

"Roughly seventy-two hours ago, a Monitor Outpost in the Myternian Sector," the holodisplay behind Alleun changed to show the Myternian Sector with respect to Kaluza/Thorn, "detected a disturbance in the Kaluza System. Admiral Benz, acting commander of the installation, dispatched Commodore L'Salle and the 4th Menach Cruiser Battallion to investigate."

Again, the display pulsated and altered to show the fleet arrive in-system.

Alleun swayed his head to gaze at each part of the audience every once in a while. "Due to a slight error, the Godulans were not recognized as allies initially. However, this was resolved. A Kanuckistani Mining Vessel, the KCV Daggerfall, was also detected."

"Commodore L'Salle identified the system as being a Federal Buffer Zone, Myternian Sector, system. Therefore, it was under Federal Jurisdiction. Our fleet politely requested that the Prospector leave the system, as it was unto a nation we are currently hostile towards. After it did not leave, the Federation Council was generous enough to settle for a 15% toll."

"After hours of bickering, requests, tuanting, inciting, and a host of other activities, the Commodore called in the Battlefleet of Auzeg in an attempt to intimidate the Prospector to pay the toll for use of the system's rich asteroid belts. The Kanuckistani vessel preceded to spite the Federal Forces In-System and incite conflict. At this point, the Federal Commander called in the two Bismarck-Class vessels within the Federal Navy."

"I stress that the vessel made no mention of its capabilities, facilities, or any other special conditions which the Federation Commanders could very well have misconstrued. However, due to condescending, imperialistic tones and messages, the Federal Commanders attacked the Kanuckistani Vessel in accordance with our Laws. The vessel was offered many chances, and 72 hours, to find other resource-rich systems, or submit 15% of its cargo to a Federal ship."

An audible humm eminated from the holodisplay as it changed to show the battle.

"The Federal Fleet opened fire, damaging the vessel moderately. The Kanuckistani vessel then jumped into the middle of our Fleet, dumped thousands of missiles, and then jumped into the heart of a newly-arrived Godulan fleet."

Now came the issue which would become most controversial of all. Alleun hoped he didn't screw up.

Words appeared on the Holodisplay. A list of charges.

Alleun gripped the podium, his veins popping out of his flesh. If it was even possible, the light in the chamber dimmed just from the brevity of the charges against the Kanuckistani.

"The UFGZ," emphasized Alleun, "By consent of the High Council and Court of Justice, charges the Kanuckistani with Failure to Adhere to Federal Jurisdiction. Destruction of Federal Property. Piracy of Federal Resources and Property without Council Consent. 4,815 Counts of Murder. Incitement of Military Action. Carrying Military-Grade Armaments Aboard a 'Civilian' vessel. Failure to Accurately and Non-Agressively Communicate Circumstances Under Which Mining and Toll Fees Were Proccessed/Payed, Resulting In Military Action and Loss of Life."

Much like the Kanuckistani liason to the public, Alleun remained silent, watching the thousands of Citizens absorb the charges. He stared into the eyes of many a concerned average Zustandan. They feared a war. Another war.

"The UFGZ demands that the Prospector Daggerfall, its crew, and its AI be turned over to Federal Courts so that Justice may be served without escalation of already stretched tensions."

Alleun saw the Holocube become visible as the image behind him disintegrated. He snatched the cube from the smartmetal and placed it back in its case.

"Thank you, and may the Lord guide our Nation through these Troubled Times. Amen."

Thousands of voices chorused at once. "Amen" boomed throughout the building.

With that, the man turned and slowly walked away.

TO: Head of State, United Federation of Germanische Zustande

The Dominion of Kanuckistan does not recognise Federal claim to the Thorn system. It was unoccupied and any theoretical claim unadvertised, save for the Godularn persence. And it was the Godularn who had jurisdiction - they who authorised the Daggerfall to continue it's operations after the situation was discovered.

If you do not turn over the officers responsible for the illegal actions commited by your navy, we will have no recourse but war to protect the lives of our citizens from pirates and trigger happy naval officers.

Consider carefully your next actions, and their consiquences for your people. If you choose war, as much as we abhor the death of innocents, we will have no choice but to make an example of your nation, lest we invite agression and death upon all kin beyond the protection of our boarders. Countless millions will live or die by your decision - I urge you not to condem them to a violent death.

Communique to the Kanuckistani Imperialists:

You show even now your disregard for life and justice, as you have openly threatened the slaughter of millions of innocents. This only serves more to prove our point that your people are ruthless, pirating, war-hungry murderers. You accuse us of carrying out our own laws, our own justice. This is not a crime, unless the Dominion's legal system is horridly twisted and in and of itself unjust.

We will not be threatened. We will not be taunted. You will rue the day you instigated war. Remember these same decisions that you ask us to make, you must consider as well. Your people are not safe. Ours are not safe. What makes the difference is whether they are attacked or not.

Even if this war you threaten is lost by our people, we will know, and history will remember, that we were honorable and just. Remember this.

I thought this was all playing out in the other thread (http://forums2.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=402437&page=1&pp=15).

And then I passed it off as dead when you decided to stop responding two weeks ago.
