Seat of Commonwealth Senate, Yilan City

With the entire Senate convinced, the only problem left is to secure domestic support for the campaign - which will undoubtedly be long drawn out, costly and tiresome. Although the Taiwanese economy is recovering miraculously, the people had never been great fans of war.

Today, Commonwealth Senator Joy Liao, the primary advocate of Southern Expansion, stood before Congress and delivered a short speech.

"Taiwan needs to look beyond her borders. Throughout history, small nations are always tossed about by Great Powers. The time has came for Taiwan to become a Power herself, and to do so we must expand.

"For years disease and civil unrest has plagued the island nations of the Pacific. Now, as imperialistic forces in America and Europe revived, soon they must invade the Third World. Before long these nations will be enslaved, exploited for their resources and their every need neglected, and Taiwan will find herself a pawn in European and American politics. Our nation's sovereignty will be eroded away, our companies out of business, our people forced into unemployment, and that would be the end of an independent Taiwan.

"Taiwan is now a leading nation in the region. We must lead the drive to counter imperialistic eforts to establish a foothold in the Pacific. We are a peaceful nation and we seek not conflict, yet at times ideals are to be fought for, and to avoid misunderstandings we must make our intentions known to the world.

"We consider any attempt by outside nations to extend their influences and power to any portion of this hemisphere as a grave threat to the security and interests of Taiwan. We will commit all human and material resources necessary for the defense of Oceanian sovereignty.

"I call upon the Congress, Administration, Diet and the People of Taiwan to stand firm in our mission, entrusted by Heaven, to protect the Pacific."

Sounds interesting. To bad I'm out side the "Pacific-Taiwanese sphere of influence" as I own Singapore, Malaysia and Brunei. I am interested to join you in your cause to defend the pacific/ South Eastern asia to western imperialistic nations.

Is Japan going to be invaded by Taiwan, or do they want Japan to help them? I got confused in your speech.

Seat of Commonwealth Senate, Yilan City, Taiwan

An attendant knocked twice and entered with a solemn face, delivering a document to Senator Lee's hands without a word.

"Well, it seems that the Japs are getting nervous." Lee said after a bit of reading. "They appear to think that we are going to invade them.

Someone in the back gave a little chuckle, but most were not amused. "We don't want any conflict with them!" Senator Chen cried out. "What on earth happened?"

"Now now, I'm sure its all just a misunderstanding," Senator Ivy Lai said. "We should have contacted them before announcing our plans, that's all. All we need to do is send them a telegram explaining our postion, I believe."

Subject: Oceania

Taiwan harbours no ill feelings towards Japan. We respect existing territorial boundaries and oppose any unilateral attempt at altering it. Our recent declaration concerning the Oceania does not cover the islands of Japan in any shape, way or form. We hope this will help to clear up any misunderstandings that may exist between our nations.

"It seems the Japanese has acknowledged our position." An aide reported. "The crisis appeared to have been resolved."

The Senators made various noises of apporval, untill Lee quietly put forth a proposal. "What about doing a deal with them now?"

Silenced, everyone turned to stare at her. "What do you mean?" Huang queried.

"We've always wanted those islands to the north, right?" Lee said enthusiasticallly. "Now that relations are more friendly with Japan, we can probably solve this diplomatically. And get a sort of a buffer zone around Taiwan, too."

All of the Senators stared at each other once more, but found themselves agreeing nevertheless.

Subject: Land Purchases

The Commonwealth Government of Taiwanese Islands wishes to procure the following territories from Japan: the Senkaku Islands, the Prefecture of Okinawa, and the Island of Iwo Jima.

Our treasury has prepared $10 billion for this purchase. We may also negotiate another price if you should feel unsatisfied. In addition, Taiwan offers to take the northern Kuril Islands for Japan in exchange.

We look forward to a postive reply from the Gossiping Academics of Sanctaphrax.

RE: Land Purchases

With regards to your offer, we feel that:
a) Okinawa is too important for us to give away at this time.
b) We will not make our friends fight our battles for us.

So therefore we have decided to give you Senkaku and Iwo Jima, for $5Bn and a NAP with the newly formed republic, if you accept. We look forward to hearing from you shortly.

Thank you for your reply. We understand you reluctance to sell Okinawa, and have decided to work upon your proposal instead.

The Commonwealth Senate has resolved to ask for the entirety of the Sakishima Islands - which includes the Senkaku Islands we previously sought to purchase, and several other minor groups to the south - for the original sum of $10 billion. We also agree to forging a non-aggression pact with Sanctaphrax, as we feel this is in the best interests of both our nations.

In addition, we withdraw the bid for Iwo Jima, as without Okinawa the island would be deep into Japanese territories. We feel that this will be both a spot for unnecessary tensions, and will only be a logistical hassale.

We have considered your offer, and decided to accept. We will set a date, and pass over official control of the islands on that date. If you would like to send over a representative, we would gladly accomodate him. We will pass over the entire Sakishima Islands, in exchange for $10Bn and a non-aggression pact.

ooc: if you want, we can start a new thread for the discussions, and eventually for the passing over of the Islands.

The Commonwealth is glad that Sanctaphrax has accepted our offer. We will send Senator Ivy Lai to Japan in order to hammer out details of the new pact and transfer of control of the Sakishima Islands, unless of course Sanctaphrax wishes to dispatch officials to Taiwan.
