In Opulence and Excess: Life of Shah Khosru III of Parthia

The golden sun of Iran peeked through the tinted windows of Persepolis palace, striking the gilded walls and casting a glow of the gems embedded into the opulent ceiling of the palace. Rubies and emeralds lit up with threads of gold showing the gemstone mosaic of a scene from the Shahnameh, depicting Rostam and his exploits. Covering the floor of pale marble were rugs from Kerman, each an antique worth thousands of dollars. The walls were covered with marble of different tones, inlaid in geometric forms and covered in places with paintings of his ancestors and Persian paintings of birds and scenes of the Shahnameh. On one side of the room, a bed was hidden by silk curtains of gold and studded with sparkling emeralds lay the Shah, in peaceful sleep. The sun began to beat in through the curtains, and when he awoke and pulled a silk rope hanging upon the ceiling, the mahogany doors to his bedchamber swung open and a throng of twenty servants came rushing in. The curtans were pulled back as one servant placed a traytable upon his bed while his female attendants ran into his bathchamber to prepare his bath. His breakfast was opulent, caviar and smoked salmon sat with prosciutto and a nice creamy and thickly brewed cup of Turkish style coffee. With glee, he ate the breakfast while two servants pressed a button, dropping a projector and a projection screen from hidden doors in the ceiling. The show was an entertaining Parthian program called, "Most Extreme Shooban Elimination Challenge" and with a few minutes of watching one could see the brutality present as contestants were subjected to a variety of challenges so they could win their freedom. In one, the Shoobans swam through a shark filled tank with legs with tiny incisions made into them and the Shah laughed loudly as the sharks devoured the helpless slaves.

It was the start of the day for the most powerful man in Parthia.

As he finished his meal, a servant took the tray from him, and stepped off his bed. He walked out onto the marble balcony outside his room with his morning glass of wine in his hand, looking out at the rugged mountains of the Pars province. In the distance, he could see his son, Prince Sassan with several young men his age riding upon horses with bows and shamshirs in hand in pursuit of several Shoobans. The Shah sipped his fine wine while a servant held a silken umbrella over his head. Dressed still in his golden silk pants and shirt he slept in, the Shah walked back inside. All the servants left the room as the Shah walked into the bathroom. Two girls from the Harem sat there, looking at the Shah with desire as he looked out at the basin sunk into the ground and surrounded by marble inlaid with gold. Whole bloomed flowers floated in the water scented with rose oil as the two women stood aside as he cast off his clothing and immersed himself in the water. One massaged his neck and shoulders, while another poured water from the basin upon his head and lathered his greying hair and beard with rose scented hair cleanser before pouring water on to wash him off. After sufficent time, the girls released the drain, sucking the rose water through a golden grate. Flowers littered the floor as one of the girls dried the Shah and scented him with fragrance. They left to allow the Shah to get dressed, having chosen casual clothing for today, when he expected no responsiblities and was free to enjoy the power and money the Shah had. From the bathroom, he emerged wearing a button down casual shirt made of silk with the top two buttons left undone and a pair of jeans. He walked out of his bedchamber into his personal sitting room. The walls were reflective, with walls covered in gold and a ceiling which hung chandeliers of gold and light, sending a glow of the sun across the room. A Kerman rug, almost 90 feet on each side covered most of the room. European style baroque furniture of wrought gold and tan and gold cusions of silk were set liberally through the room. Through one door, was the main corridor leading to the entrance, to another, sat the Shah's entertaining area for small numbers of elite rulers, and one more, set off behind a gate of gold and a massive door of mahogany, stamped with the royal seal and guarded by two Immortals was the Shah's harem. His servants thew open the doors to the main hallway, a structure almost 130 feet high and made of the whitest marble. Windows in the roof and on the walls let in a stream of light. Perhaps the longest runner in the world covered the floor, a runner stretching 500 feet and almost 55 feet wide kept the marble floor hidden under a tapestry of silk. Statues of his ancestors lined the hallway, nearest him was a statue of his father Ardeshir XI, and it stretched back, leaving a lineage of all kings stretching back to his ancestor, Ardeshir I. He neared the main entry hall, but before that, he turned to a door, which a servant immediatley opened and then decended a flight of stairs to a garage below the palace, he felt like driving a bit.

The stairs took him below Persepolis Palace to a Parking garage, filled with cars from one end to the next, almost 300 vehicles were sitting here in the garage. The Shah's Hummer H-1 sat next to the door, painted in desert camoflague, it was a fine car to transport him across the rough country of Pars, but today, he felt like going fast. He walked across the garage large enough to work for a stadium, and then, donning his Oakley sunglasses, he opened the doors of his red Ferrari Enzo and turned on the ignition, driving slowly out of the garage into the drive between the stone wall and his palace. As the gate opened, he hit the ignition like a brick of lead and flew out onto the road leading to the highway. A car in front of him was going at 70 miles an hour, and the Shah simply switched lanes and passed him like a rocketing blur of red. He swerved onto the on ramp of the Persepolis-Shiraz Highway, which wrapped around the cities separated only by suburbs after 1400 years of mutual expansion. The highway had a high speed limit, 80 miles an hour like most Parthian highways, but the Shah was going close to 120 mph, rocketing through lanes and past traffic. He loved driving fast more than anything else, and no one could realize it was the Shah behind the wheel.

OOC: Excellent work Parth, one wonders how the Shooban don't die out :P

I think I will write an Imperial slave thread sometime today... I've been meaning too for some time, just never got round to it in between crucifying and burning civilian and military personnel from other nations.

The Ferrari pulled back to the gates of Persepolis and slowed to a stop while they opened, to reveal the paradise of lakes and gardens surrounding the palace, fed by aqueducts which took water from mountain peaks miles away. The great structure of the palace rose above the palms and trees, shining with gold ornamentation in the bright Persian sun. As he pulled into the circle drive in front of the palace, a servant came forth with a silken umbrella made of white and sewn with gold thread, which the man held over the Shah, sheliding him from the sun as he stepped out. Followed by his umbrella bearer, he walked into the palace and was greeted by a chamberlain, who spoke, "My lord, a few peasants farming the land you own have requested an audience with you. They are the ones you threw into jail for not paying their tax on living. "Ahh yes", said the Shah as he smiled with a bit of morbid interest. "Let me go prepare."

From a small room in the main hallway separated by a door of mahogany, came the Shah, dressed in all his glory. He wore a military uniform of blue silk, shimmering in the light and studded with medals upon his chest. The collar and shoulders were covered in thin threads gold sewn into the material. His belt was made of gold and was buckled together with a golten buckle topped by a massive emerald the size of a small child's fist. Over his shoulders he wore a cloak of gold, shining in the light of the palace as the shimmering metal reflected like the sun. He walked into the throne room, a massive structure almost 350 feet long, 50 feet wide and 90 feet high with the central part of the floor covered in a rug with gems sewn into the very fabric. On both sides, Immortals in blue coats trimmed with gold held their Shamshirs on high as the Shah walked past, to the raised platform at the end of the room where his throne, made of gold and covered in emeralds and diamonds sat. Cusions of gold made of silk padded where the Shah sat, and soon, servants brought forth one of the 150 crowns owned by the Persian Shah, this one was made of gold, ending on top with four rounded points, each of the triangular pieces of gold were inlaid with a massive diamond, while from the center of the crown, what looked like an array of peacock feathers was an artfully crafted imitation created by an assembly of gemstones upon a platnum core. From the cieling, the otherwise dark room was lit by a single window, designed to shine upon the throne and cast the Shah in a divine light in the dimly lit room.

The doors to the throne room opened in a flash of dim light, and then closed. Two people walked forward, surrounded by Immortals in their blue dress uniforms and walking atop the rug of gems, silk, and gold adorning the floor. As the two men entered, they went onto their knees and bowed down before the Shah, seated on the Peacock Throne surrounded by Zoroastrian priests in white garmets. One priest beckoned the men to rise, and within seconds the Persian men rose up, showing their fine attire. They were overseers, paid by the Shah to ensure productivity of agricultural holdings, worked by Shooban slaves and free people known to the Persians as scum. One spoke, "Your majesty, several farms have failed and 45 Peasants cannot pay you your rent for land or their freedom tax." The Shah raised his hands into the air, covering him in a blaze of light from the window, making him look divine. Then, he spoke, "Sell them all into slavery to pay for the tax and bring the money to me." The men bowed, and then exited the room.

The Shah descended from his throne and walked towards two servants. Handing one his cloak, and another his crown, the servants walked in the presence of two Immortals into a small room where the crowns were kept, a vaultlike structure containing the royal jewels and an untold amount of wealth, in gemstones and hard currency, like gold, silver, and platinum. There, in a glass case of shatterproof glass, the crown would go, protected by five Immortals within the vault at all times. Next to that case, 150 other cases containing another crown and more cases full of tens of thousands of loose gemstones and jeweled items, from swords to dinner plates. Dishes of solid gold and silver sat stacked in another case along the wall, while a massive pile of gold bars was protected by a cagelike structure. The servants placed the crown in, and then walked out of the vault door, which closed behind them. The Shah had changed into his silk shirt and jeans, and headed back to his private apartments, where his small dining room (http://onlinepersians.com/i/VHAMM17.JPG) for smaller banquets and personal meals were. He sat braced on cusions while servants made their way up the center of the table to remove the plate covers and show the exotic dishes. There was enough food to feed five men present, and the Shah would undoubtedly waste much of it. Grabbing a plate of barg kebab and cutting into the thin, rich slices of meat with solid silver dinner ware, he savored the flavor before eating delectable stuffed dolmehs and rice colored purple with indigo or yellow with saffron. A slow roasted lamb shank was consumed quickly, and then, having satisfied himself with that, he ate of a dish of caviar before a desert of tasty halva.
