[Alsavia Valley, Pandrea Islands]

The waterfall hid more than the cave, but the nature photographer cared less about that. The wildlife afficianados locally went nuts for the creatures that lived there, and if anything, it was nice here, far away from the bureaucracy and calculated killing of man. Little did he know that his actions would bring them here.

The man splashed water on his face, it was cold and clean. He took his camera out and began venturing into the confines of the cave. It was beautiful and serene, despite the guano. He didn't mind. There was a small cut on his hand from the climbing, and he brushed that hand against some of the foul waste. He absentmindedly wiped it on the clean rock and went about his tasks.

He returned from the cave and went back to the town of 15,000 or so, which despite it's size was fairly isolated. Nobody would have remembered his name. The photographer sat down in his hotel room and looked at the photos via laptop, pleased with the shots. A little touching up, but that wasn't his job.

Later that day he had dinner and slept, but not well. When he woke up he felt awful. He thought he'd been innoculated with everything, but supposed it was just what he ate.

By dinner that day 4 more had been infected.

By the next the photographer was in the hospital waiting room. Within the hour 10 more had the disease.

The photographer, later identified as Jacob Howell, died of symptoms similar to Ebola. The blood made the latest horror movies look like kid's cartoons.

A tourist attraction, the sightseers of one of the UCSNE's most preserved ecosystems paid little heed. But at 2 in the morning a doctor in Fehrnacht, Captial City State of the Pandreas got a call he never expected to get.

It was all downhill from there.

IC:
The Ministry of Health and Welfare was busy that morning. Countless people who had been, the day before, seeing stem cell research at the top of their agenda now faced a health crisis that made the rest of their careers seem useless.

"So what is the Ministry recommending?"

The conference room was filled with the usual MoHW suits, but there were a few new faces. The Ministry of Law and Order, for example. The representative was one Robert Gellshaff, a stocky man who was incessantly twirling a pen in his fingers. It spun faster as he waited for an answer.

"Quarantine. At least until we can find out what the problem is. Current symptoms are those of Ebola, but I don't want to take any chances."

"How isolated is Alvasia?"

"Fairly, no airports, but the rivers and roads are fine."

"So quarantine would be feasible?"

"Should be. As I said, it's somewhat isolated."

"Within 24 hours it will be completely."

This would be a very delicate operation indeed. Giving Alsavia advance notice would only cause panic. They would not announce until they were 100 percent sure that quarantine could be enforced.

[South Bay Marine Base, Pandrea Islands]

"Man, what is this shit?"

The order to prepare for deployment with full NBC was an odd one, to say the least. They were each issued the Amphib-rated M150 Light Infantry Battledress with NBC inserts and masks.

"I feel like a fucking moon man. Look at me." The trooper joked, walking in slow motion and making wooshing noises with the gas mask.

"Soldier Kohel, what in the hell are you doing? Will you just get in the APC like everyone else?"

He grinned, nobody could see it but they knew it. Paul Kohel just was that way. He made his way inside the APC and sat down, plugging his Mp3 player into a USB port on the suit.

"Kcch, Control, all personnel are onboard and ready for liftoff. Kcch."

"Will you cut that shit out? Now that we're moving, we've got orders from command. We're to move to Highway 5 near Alsavia and set up full blockade. We've got orders to use any force necessary to make sure everyone in there is contained."

"What's happening? Terrorist raid or something?"

"No, there's been an outbreak. Some crazy virus shit."

The APCs continued on.

Highway Five, Alsavia

"Wow, the traffic is getting bad."

The college students were on a cross island road trip, and were on their way to Fehrnacht. Usually it was quiet here, but this was almost as bad as the capital itself.

"Put on the radio or something. There's a helicopter or something up there. Maybe they know what's going on."

"... Quarantine of Alsavia. This order by the Ministries of Law and Order, and Health and Welfare, are effective immediately. Residents are advised to stay within their homes as much as possible. Any bodies should be handled by equipped professionals and cremated ASAP. Anyone attempting to leave the Quarantine Zone without the permission of the MLO or MHW will be dealt with all necessary force."

They sat silent as they saw a pair of people get out of their car, wet towels over their faces, and begin running towards the forest.

"You heard the quarantine order. Return to your vehicle. Any attempt to leave the zone without authorization will be met with all necessary force. This is your only warning.

"Alright, we have runners. Monitor, take your stick out and intercept them. And Kohel, keep it under control."

They smashed through the forest, thermal viewers on. It was easy to spot them now as they ran. The monitor unslung an M-22 shotgun, loaded with nonlethal KE rounds. He activated the amplifiers on the suit and shouted.

"This is your last warning to stop and return to the zone. As of now you are violating government orders... Dammit. They won't stop."

He pumped the shotgun and fired. The 20mm impact round blasted the man off his feet, and the girl shrieked and then quieted as the shotgun, audible among the birds and other wildlife, was pumped again.

"Go back now."

A trooper tossed the man a coldpack for the massive bruise now on his chest and pointed towards Alsavia.

"There's nothing you can do. I'm sorry."

They returned to their car and sat in there, too afraid to go back. Neither of them were infected at the time, but they didn't know that. Then the hypochrondia started. Apsirin and tylenol was flying out of medicine cabinets as people began to think they were sick. An older man in Alsavia died of overdose.

With the marines, countless soldiers were turned from the medical tents. Kohel was one in a line of many, and the corpsmen were getting fed up.

"There is nothing wrong with you physically, it's all in your head, Kohel."

"Well, I was just trying to make sure. You know, in case."

"I told you, we don't have innoculations because we aren't sure what it is. Just calm down. You've been in a suit all day, and you haven't even entered the town. You're fine."

The people of Alsavia didn't have that luxury. Within minutes the story was at the top of every network. Hysteria was breaking out across the Pandreas, and pharmaceutical companies were rolling in money. And quietly, the virus continued to spread.

:Secret IC to New Empire Government:
It has come to our attention that an unkown epidemic has occured within your country. Until such time as the nature and extent of the disease can be determined, Mondoth is emforcing a travel and tade quarentine, all ships and aircraft leaving The New Empire will be turned away from Monodthian shores and air fields, all Mondothian citizens currently in The New Empire are urged to report to the nearest medical facility for full medical examination before returning to Mondoth by way of Mondothian comercial aircraft now in The New Empire, Mondoth will reimburse all facilities fully for the cost of all examinations. Failure on the part of the New Empire government or people to provide examinations will constitute an act of agression and mondoth will react duly. To this effect, and to ensure against the failure of quarentine procedures currently in place, three (3) Shadow class SSGN's have been routed to the area, they will remain in international waters, each is equiped with a single (1) thermo-nuclear device attached to a kite scramjet cruise missile, these devices will ONLY be used in the event of a massive breach of quarentine to protect against further loss of life. Any interference with these self protective measures will be dealt with decisively.

"I once again must stress that this is not an epidemic. This is a localized outbreak. They occur in South Africa all the time-"

"Is it true this disease may be new to the scientific community?"

"We have not yet determined the nature of the disease, but new diseases are discovered all the time. I would not rule that out."

"Is a full quarantine really necessary, Minister?"

"It's best to be safe rather than sorry due to the proximity of Alsavia to Fehrnacht."

"What about the use of marines and complaints of unnecessary force against zone inhabitants?"

"That really isn't a factor I am in control of."

"Captain, we have confirmed over acoustic passive and semi-passive the location of the last Mondoth SSGN."

The Captain nodded.

"Continue shadowing of vessel, maximum stealth."

In a 10,000 ton submarine capable of going several kilometers under for half a year, disease was not a factor. There only thing that mattered to him and the crews of 2 other Orca Class SSNs was that there were 3 nuclear armed missiles targeted at their home soil, and intentions aside they would have to be kept in check.

Meanwhile, a car that had missed the blockade by 30 minutes continued on towards Fehrnacht Airport.

The Republic of Algonquia has recognized that there is an epidemic arising in the New Empire. As a result, all trade and travel between the two nations will be stopped immediately. All Algonquian citizens are being forced to stay in New Empire for their own security and safety.

Seeing that New Empire had found itself with what may be a previously unknown virus, Algonquia would like to send over a team of medical researchers and scientists to examine the situation, with the permission of the government, of course.

:Mondothian Submarine Command (FLTCOMSUB):
At last report 'Burning Desire' and 'Granite Resolve' reported sonar contacts consistent with Orca class SSN's. Probably keeping tabs. No contact report from 'Baroque Straights' but that could mean anything.

We don't have any hostile intentions and we're in international waters so let's go ahead and let them have their fun. Order the captains to not do anything agressive. And route a set of Krackens into the area incase anything happens. Shouldn't though. Make sure the Krackens know the game and keep a low profile.

Aye sir, Kracken class SSN's 'Free Heart' 'Oceanic Hunter' and 'Sea Lights' are patrolling merchant lines in the area, in preperation for the tanker 'Atlantean Wanderer' en route to, somewhere, not in the naval package for the area, should look into that. anyway, It's not too far off and those tankers have pretty good sonar. if they need us they'll call.

Sounds good commander, draft the orders.

Consider it done admiral.

here's the pictures, looks like nothign getting out. Those empire guys sure clamped this one done in a hurry.

Good thing, the way that VODAIS thing turned out, if they hadn't we'd probably be looking at pictures of a glass crater right now.

Not likely

Maybe a small glass crater.

Maybe. So you sure nothing left the quarentine.

Unless they did it underground.

Allright, I guess we keep monitoring the situation and tell the Ministers that there's nothing to worry about.

Sounds good.

IC:

The organization of science teams were suited up excessively as they sat in 'the airlock', a large tent made out of bulletproof and fireproof polymers. It was where all the marines on guard had to put their suits through DECON showering, and a seperate section was where they suited up.

The scientists were lead through the chemical showers to a pair of lochoi (UCSNE equivalent of squad), along with 4 UCSNE scientists. Ahead of them stretched Highway Five, with cars sitting silently. The first car was that of the college students, who were miraculously still alive and uninfected.

"Guys, you've gotta get us outta here. I seen the other people- they fucked man, they fucked. Letusoutletusoutletusout!"

The UCSNE scientists walked past them too, towards the car of one of the dead. It was the couple that had tried to break earlier. They now lay covered in blood and wounds.

"These are both disease caused and self inflicted. We also have reason to believe the virus triggered a conflict between the two before they crashed out and died."

With more cars it was the same. In one a body slumped out the door, lying in a massive pool of blood that dried at the pavement. And around that, dead birds and rats.

"Must have jumped species somehow. All the carrion-eaters are dead."

Still a mile to go before they reached Alsavia itself.

"ADI from the group reporting influx of three Kraken class SSN."

The Captain wasn't worried for his own saftey. The UCSNE had likely invested more in its submarine fleet than any other nation on earth, and from a purely military standpoint the three Orcas could likely neutralize the current threat.

Politically, it was not looking good. One SSGN, maybe acceptable to the public. But three, and then three more attack submarines was starting to look more like one of the dreaded Markovian strike groups during the two wars that had walked the tightrope of tactical nuclear conflict.

The subs would not fire yet, but in Berliston things were changing.

Draka politics were as bad, if not worse, than the old system. The watchful eye of a dictatorship with the ruthless backstabbing of a democracy. But right now it was time for the latter to take place.

Some insignificant aide had a hold of the original Mondothian message, and within a few days they had given it to the press. The headlines declared:

Foreign subs plot to nuke Alsavia

Mondoth prepares nuclear fallback to Alsavia Plauge

Government would authorize nuclear attack on plauge zone

[Fehrnacht Intl Airport]

The man that had escaped the blockade was Charles Elney, a businessman leaving Alsavia after visiting an old friend. One who had been infected. Though he did not know it, he would still carry on the effects of the virus as he entered the aircraft and sat down. He felt fine then, and pulled out a magazine. The aircraft, bound for the Oceanic States, took off. About 3 minutes later Elney felt sick, his eyes red and a bruise he sustained earlier starting to feel particularly painful. But he was used to being airsick and dismissed it as that.

And then the bleeding started. It flowed out of his nose like a pair of streams, shining and red. He quickly requested tissue and angled his head back. Again, it must have been something about the cabin pressure. Sweat joined the mix, and the pungent stench of fear and blood filled the cabin.

Back at the airport, the hazmat suited Intervention Force troopers, deployed by a series of vertical takeoff and landing aircraft, stormed through the corridors and terminals, their boots noisy against the tile. They bore weapons and heavy body armor, and that alone cleared the way. The leader looked up at the departures list and swore. The flight was airborne. He activated his radio and made a call.

Cortina Military Complex

The four pilots raced to their aircraft, which were already fueled and armed. The leapt in, insectlike oxygen masks and helmet-visors strapped to their heads. The visors lit up with symbology as they taxied to the runway and raced into the air, moving to 35,000 feet and accelerating to Mach 3 on their dual turbofans.

The pilot was surprised when the first call from the F-121 interceptors came in. He glanced to his left and saw one, missiles hanging from it in a silent threat. He complied, and immediately ordered the cockpit sealed off from the cabin and turned the plane back towards Fehrnacht.

Like a sick parody of a celebrity carpet, the runway was lined with soldiers and vehicles, the aircraft coming down and braking as the fighters pulled away. As soon as it came to a stop every door was either sealed or hooked up to an 'airlock' tunnel down to another series of biohazard tent.

"Alright, let's do this quick."

The doctors suited up and made their way into the aircraft, looking for Elney. They found him, breathing profusely and covered in blood. His eyes watched them, displaying the emotions of a confused, frustrated and tired creature.

"Christ."

The doctor made a motion with his gloved hand and withdrew a hypodermic.

"Let's get some samp-"

Elney jumped at the doctor, blood coming out of his mouth and nose in a frothy snarl.

"FUCK! Get out of here! He's gone nuts!"

The two Intervention Force troopers in the airlock readied their guns as they saw the first doctor nearly jump from the aircraft and slide down the side of the tunnel-ladder. Then the second followed, covered in blood, screaming both for help and confirming that there was no punctures.

One IF soldier raised his M11 submachinegun, loaded with 10mm JHP as not to penentrate the airlock tent. Elney sure enough came after, screaming with rage as his body pumped itself with everything it could to stay alive, the mind half dead and thrashing in agony.

The M11 roared as 5 JHP rounds made Elney even bloodier, his body thrown back before sliding down the tunnel-ladder, practically covering it in blood. The second IF trooper moved to shut the cabin door. They moved to the DECON section as the doctors zipped him up and moved him to a section seperate from everything but the tunnel-ladder and the hub it was in, body disposal. There they threw the encased corpse into a metal capsule. A whirr was heard and then, the machine beeped, spitting out a package of sterile ashes. Then the doctors too went through DECON.

Now the war had a new front.

:Public release from Mondothian Government:
As of yet, no nuclear strike is authorized or indeed planned. the presence of nuclear armed SSGN's is strictly a last ditch reserve in case of a widespread quarentine breach. After the recent outbreak of the VODAIS disease in our nation we view all possible biological threats to our nation and the people of the world with the utmost gravity and have decided that in the event that the unknown disease breeches the quarentine zone, that to prevent massive loss of life the only recourse is a nuclear cauterization to prevent the spread of this unknown plague. To prevent the necesity of the use of the nuclear devices, which, for safety reasons are not curently armed or targeted, A Mondothian medical team with experience dealing with the so called 'hot' clasification of diseases is currently en route to the quarentine zone to aid in any possible way the ending of the tragic circumstances that have nuclear devices within proximity of The New Empire.

This is Flight Mike Mike 2 oh niner seven carrying medical personel class five to Aslavia quarentine zone, requesting clearence to land and disembark. Over.

: Deep in a secret underground complex in the Easter Mondoth Desert Region:
The Complex had only just been built, nobody had expected it to be used this soon, in fact, few of the people who knew it existed had ever expected it to be used ever. Thus, when the activation order came through it was empty and there was no one of the type of people that it needed to run that even knew it existed. The list of such people in Mondoth was small and a large percent were already on a plane to the place where the disease that had caused the activation order to go out was currently contained. when the activation order was recieved, the people directly affected groaned and then went to work. There were hot disease specialists to find and brief, codes to be decided on and given out, briefings to give and a nuclear missile to prep. The EMDR complex was the only place in Mondoth where a true ICBM could be found, and probably the only one in the world controlled exclusively by 'science types'. the military vastly preferred the cheaper, easier to maintain and much more flexible cruise missiles for delivering strategic ordinance, but for this the people in charge decided something much more permanent and powerful had to be used. Consequently, the EMDR complex had its very own nuclear tipped intercontinental ballistic missile complete with twelve independent reentry vehicles that could be targeted and launched by a unanimous vote of the twelve 'hot doctors' proscribed for the operation of the complex.

OOC; Reading a little "Hot Zone" eh?

incase anyone gets the wrong idea, Mondoth is actually on the most part very lery of nuclear weapons, but the abovementioned VODAIS outbreak has left them a little disease phobic. the three nukes on the subs and the EMDR complex missile is close to three fourth's of the current Mondothian nuclear arsenal and we're not planning on making more anytime soon

"Ah, 2097, roger that."

As the Mondothian aircrat stepped down, the crew of the airliner along with an air marshal were standing in the DECON shower, affixed with gas masks to protect them from the harsh chemical jets.

And then the two IF troopers moved into the cabin. What they saw made one retch. The entire cabin was filled with corpses, again with the wounds inficted by themselves and eachother. Blood on the walls, seats, floor. Everywhere blood and stench and death.

"Any of them alive?"

"A few over here."

The IF trooper gestured with the barrel of the M11.

"Shoot them."

The first burst took out two people, when a stewardess raced out, blood all over her and her tounge mangled in self mutilation. The soldier swore and put half his magazine into her, leaving her somehow even more mauled. Then the soldiers were a mad display of firing and reloading, the entire cabin soon filled with floating particles and feathers from the seats, and more.

"Let's bug out. Get the cleaners."

They raced to the decon shower and a soldier gestured to the cargo bay of the aircraft. A team of men began loading it with thermite-near plasma explosive. A truck pulled the aircraft into a desolate field, and then roared away. They stop and spun around, the aircraft sitting there, seeming normal from the outside.

"Are we clear?"

"All units clear."

"Blow it."

The explosives triggered a series of thermium-nitrate explosives, creating massive fires that quickly swept throughout the cabin in a split second before the entire cabin seemed to vaporize from the pressure, billions of tiny fragments expanding outwards as cockpit and ripping the rest to flaming shards.

The fires continued, and once everything was out, all remaining pieces of corpse were burnt. The field was sprayed with DECON chemicals. All this in the eyes of the Mondothian scientists that were at the base camp there, preparing to leave for the zone.
