Type 14 Frigate - Export

Overview

In conjunction with the soon to open Burnsian State Tech Storefront, Breningrad Shipyards has designed two new classes of ship specifically to export to nations desiring an upgrade in their current naval combat capabilities, or even to those new states who desire smaller-displacement vessels that can still poke holes in larger warships.

The Type 14 frigate is designed to operate in littoral waters in conjunction with the Type 10 corvette. The two ships used the same computer combat system, and this allows the frigate to act as a limited command ship, capable of controlling the actions of four Type 10s. The frigate, unlike the Type 10, is optimized for anti-submarine work, and in this regard utilizes most of its weapons space for helicopter storage as well as a significant amount of rocket-launched torpedoes in the VLS cells.

The Type 14 is a sleek, monohull warship with an angled superstructure that forms a relatively high freeboard. The aft section of this superstructure contains storage space for one medium-sized ASW helicopters as well as one tactical unmanned aerial vehicle. The frigate’s combat center is optimized for long-range control of this TUAV, allowing it to operate in one of three unique missions: 1.) the limited stowage of two sonobuoys for deployment 2.) the stowage of an onboard radar dish that provides extended radar coverage of the ship’s operating area – akin to an AWACs aircraft, but much more limited in power, 3.) the stowage of limited anti-submarine weapons – either two depth charges or two light-weight torpedoes. In conjunction with the ASW helicopter attached to the vessel, the TUAV allows for excellent ASW surveillance and if need-be combat capabilities.

The Type 14 is constructed with strengthened aluminum alloys. Any specific areas requiring heavier protection shielded with titanium and ceramic armour on the interior of the hull – and if possible – around the selected compartments; some of these areas include the VLS cells and forward gun magazine, as well as the engine compartment, hangar deck, and combat center. Given the ship’s role in hunting and killing submarines, she is equipped with the latest in both active and passive sonar technology and recognition software. She is equipped with a towed sonar array and four deployable drones, which carry active and passive sonar systems. These drones are launched through the ship’s four 533mm torpedoes tubes (two amidships starboard and port) and like the TUAV are remotely operated from the Type 14. These drones can also act – if required – as torpedo decoys, having been equipped with noisemakers generating sounds of the Type 14’s power plant and propeller system.
