Antartic Civilization Moves Out of Isolation; Seeks Relations (Earth II)

A man holding an old early 90's video recorder tries to keep his hand steady as the man next to him counts down from 10 seconds. The King stood at his old fur covered desk, a little nervous but confident. This would be the first transmission from the Yelmish Civilization to the world. The Antartic Civilization had been growing in the frozen continent for over 1,000 years. Wars that lasted for over 800 years made the people hardy and excellent fighters. The 800 year war known as "The Great War" ended not more than four months ago when the last Slavic city was taken. Now that the government of the Yelmish people were stable it was decided upon the King to step out of isolation and move out into the world. Small trade expeditions to the North gave the people a taste of what their is out in the world. Eventually the King knew his people wouldn't last if he didn't try to modernize his kingdom. The red light on the recorder brightened to signify that it was recording. The King took a long breath.

"Good day. I am King Erik Von Yelm the 11th of the nation of Yelm. We are situated in the South West of Antartica and have been living here for over 1,000 years. A war which has lasted for over 800 years had stunted our cultural and technological growth, only small trade expeditions to various countries have given us a taste of what is out in the world. Having said that we want to modernize our nation and strengthen our communities. Our people live in the mountains and underground, only going to the surface when we need water, or food. We wish to do away with the old way of living and see if any nation out in the world could provide us with a new way of living. We seek trade relations and alliances with other nations in the world. Our military consists of only small bands armed with old rifles which are rusting.

We have found only one resource that is in large quantity here in the mountains. A metal known as kyrie which displays the same qualities as fine steel, is found all over the mountains and hills. It has a slight bluish color to it when it has been melted and molded. We would be willing to exchange this metal for mining equipment and any sort of technology a nation offers. Thank you."

With that the message ended. The video tape was copied using several dozen VCR recorders. The tape was then sent to nations via shipping.

OOC:Short post but to the point.

"Ah, yes. The final post on the program is that we've recieved a report of an unknown civilization in Antartica. A little while away from Falkland, but still. They seek international relations and trade agreements. Apparently, they've been there for more then a thousand years." The aide finished his daily report to the Emperor. 'It will be exciting to see how he responds' the aide thought.

"A new civilization eh? Let's make some new friends. Send them the following message."

To: King Erik Von Yelm the 11th
From: Emperor Thomas I of Cotland

Dear sir
The Empire of Cotland wish to open relations with your nation, and are very interrested in this 'kyrie'. We are willing to send down heavy mining equipment, field generators for making electricity, and many other types of technology. Although we are located on the other side of the world, we do have a small colony near your nation, at a place called the Falkland Islands. We will sent the personell and equipment from there.

Sincerely,
Emperor Thomas I of Cotland

Twelve C-130Js modified for operation off snow and ice landed at a flat field of land at the coordinates transmitted by the Yelmians. They carried with them components to the mining equipment promised to the Yelmians, miners, construction workers to teach the Yelmians how to make houses above the ground, and officials from the Cottish government there to establish relations with the Yelmians. Stepping off the cargo ramp of the Hercules, William Carter looked around. It seemed that the locals were afraid of the planes.

ooc: Have your people ever seen airplanes before?
Yelm

OOC: Yeah, but they've seen them in the sky and what not.
IC:
A middle aged warrior stepped foward from the frightened crowd. He a thin ceremonial piece of armour on his chest and had an old M1 Garand slung across his chest. The King said that they would be expecting visitors. The man stuck his hand out, "I am Warchief Teranis Guthrum, commander of the Eastern Armies. If you would follow me I can direct you to the king, he is waiting. Oh and you can leave your equipment here, our men can take it inside the cave."

The Warchief walked towards a snow covered mountain two hundred meters away. Leading the men inside he walks them through the Grand Chamber. Furs from seals, and penguins lay on the floor and walls. The chamber is roughly 25 ft high and 100 feet in width. He leads them past the busy market chamber were trade was being commenced and finally brought them to the King's Meeting Chamber.

"Greetings. I'm William Carter, official envoy from Emperor Thomas I of Cotland. Thank you." Apparently the people spoke a variant of Norse. Carter turned and had the people unload the equipment before he followed the Warchief. The cave complex was most impressive, and when he entered the meeting chamber, William was almost beyond speech. He almost forgot why he was there, but the heavy briefcase he carried with him filled with plans for several stuff, most notably early nuclear reactors, airplanes, houses, mining techniques, etc. Now, he waited for the King to appear.

The King enterred into the Meeting Chamber. He wore a long robe of seal skin, and a crown made of kyrie. The guards standing near by bowed and got the King a seat. The King sat down right across from the visitor. "I am King Erik Von Yelm the 11th. I rule all that you see and much more. Now Warlord Guthrum tells me that you are willing to give us some new technologies, Mr.Carter? First off I wish to inform you that we have purchased several large fleets and have fully outfitted our military. At the moment we have enough equipment and assets to equip and maintain a 4 Million strong army and a 2,000 strong fleet. What I am saying is that we require no military equipment. But I am sure you do have something else?"

Foreign Minister Salinas paced his office. Being from Liebermonkian Hidalgo, he was not quite used to the international community as they had been very much an isolationist sub-nation. Joining the large scale operations of the Liebermonkian main-land took some time, but Salinas eventually grew quite used to it. Relations with other nations were quite usually the same thing over and over with only changes in languages and names. But when Salinas recieved the VHS from a nation known as Yelm, Salinas was quite stumped on what to do. "They've been isolated for how long!?! My, that's quite an amazing time. This metal they speak of. Fine as steel, but slightly blue when finished." He knew that this was an opportunity that he should not pass. Liebermonk, and Queen Lerathen in specific, was very fond of the color blue. A chance to make their ships out of this interesting metal would delight his Queen. Salinas quickly began writing a letter that would be sped over to Antarctica on a speed-helicoptor. He was unsure on wether that transport would be smartest, as it would possibly frighten the people who have not seen such machines. But he also thought it could encourage trade of technologies with that nation.

Dear King Erik Von Yelm the 11th of the nation of Yelm,
I am Foreign Minister Salinas speaking on behalf of Queen Lerathen of Liebermonk. When I recieved the video tape, I almost considered dicarding it. After viewing your story, I am glad I did not. We are very interested in this metal you speak of and are willing to organize a trade deal with you for this metal. Technologies we offer are computers, airplanes, a multitude of military technologies. If there is anything in specific you would like, we will see how we can accomidate to youre needs for a possible trade deal. Thank you.

Our bases in Antarctica have also intercepted your message, and are quite surprised to hear that there are people living in the areas so far are unexplored, at least on our maps. We have picked up thermal readings from time to time, but we thought not much of them. We also would be delighted to set up some kind of deal with you, given you either have more of this interesting metal (which could help stimulate our economies here) or other trade values we would be potentially interested in.

Our nation mainly specifies in the production of military small arms, a 'catalog' of which can be seen below in the attached document. Since your people supposedly live very near some of our bases, we can special order these weapons from our factories in Africa and have them to you by no time. We hope you also accept our offer, and we are ready to send more diplomats if you wish.

Personal Message, To Erik Von Yelm the XI:

We do find it a good idea to have this metal used as a potential material in our weaponary, and point in action we will fully fund you with all the machinery you need if you agree to sign a trade contract with us. In return for our fundings, we would expect a certain percentage of all the kyrie alloy you produce over the next few years. If the material meets our developmental standards, as well as some of our customers, we will look into drawing up a much more official contract with you in which we will provide a substantial amount of funds and we will give you the credit for the material in our International Storefront. We hope you accept this offer.

"Yes Your Majesty. I can, on behalf of Cotland, offer you nuclear technology, which is cheap, powerful, and very effective. We can also offer you construction technology, airplanes, mining equipment and computer technology. All this in exchange for some of that Kyrie. We hope to be able to construct ships and other items of it, provided we are supplied enough of it."

"Very well, I can sign the trade deal. How much kyrie will you require for your weapons?"

The King thought for a moment, "We would be interested in airplanes, mining equipment, construction equipment and computers. A nucluear reactor would be highly unlikely to effectively function due to our cold weather. At the moment our kyrie production has increased rapidly due to demand and new mining equipment. Roughly how much would you need?"

"Cotland will be most pleased with a monthly supply of approx. 650 tons in exchange for the mentioned technologies. We construct a whole range of airplanes. Both civilian and military. Which type would you wish? Also, several supercomputers and many other computers will be shipped, along with people who will teach you how to use them. The first lot of mining equipment is in the planes, and more will follow. We hope that you don't mind that the rest is shipped in via ships escorted by naval vessels? We are experiencing a slight problem with pirates nowadays." Carter said with his best pokerface. He hoped that the supply of Kyrie wouldn't be too great a strain on the Yelmians.

The King thought for a moment, "Due to recent international interest I can guarentee 600 Tons per month. As for aircraft we would require those that can take off and land at sea, our military aircraft are already highly advance. Everything else seems to be in order. Would you like to view our cave complex?"

The cargo jet flew out of Liebermonkian Hidalgo's McAllen Miller Intercontinental Airport, the closest airport in Liebermonk to Antarctica. Loaded with enough mining equipment for any full-scale operation, and portable generators numbering to the point that a large city could be run by them, the jet flew at a lower speed due to the weight. Even at that lower speed, it would only take two days.
Foriegn Minister Salinas felt accomplished when he learned that the trade would take place. This felt like the future of a strong relation with the nation of Yelm.
