"Live broadcast from CBS (Colonial Broadcasting Service)"

Well, Bob, its that time again. Election day is nearly upon us, and campaign fever has hit an all-time high.

Yes, Shari, and this time round anything could happen. Since the nation began communicating with the outside world, political opinions have changed wildly. We've even seen the birth of a new party, the isolationists, and the decline of the democrats, who've been in power for practically 2 hundred years.

Thats right Bob, according to the figures out of the last 175 years, the democrats have held the Green House for 155 years, and have headed nearly every majority in both the People's House and the Senate House. But as you say, this year we just don't know what to expect. We're predicting big gains for the extremist parties, the fascists and the communists, and for both the conservatives and socialists.

One things clear, Shari, and that is that the probable big losers of this election will be Daniel Allen and his Colonial Democrat Party.

OK Bob, lets look at the parties.

Governor Daniel Allen, 58, has been governor for 2 terms and was previously in the Senate for 15 years. From Oliver City, he is married with 2 sons.

The Democrats are the party of government and have dominated Ollielands politics throughout the nations history. They are slighty left of centre and support limited free trade. The party is supported across the nation, especially in the central regions around Oliver City. They have led the way in taking Ollieland out of isolation and want to take the nation further onto the world stage.

Senator Oliver Peterson, 69, was elected to the Senate at the age of 19 in 1955 and is both the youngest and longest serving senator in Ollielands history. From the village of Shansun in the mountainous north, he is married with one son and four daughters.

The conservatives have their main support in the mountainous north and are mainly right of centre. They are pro free trade and capitalist and take a high tone on moral issues. They are strong believers in the military and the police. They have cautiously supported the government in their contact policies, but are unsure of how far outside contact should go.

Mayor Lenny Grace, 46, was elected mayor of his home city of Blofeld bay in 2000 by a landslide majority. He has campaigned to limit Blofeld Naval Base for many years. he was persuaded to stand for the Governors position by his long term partner, Oliver Gantz.

The Liberal Party are centrist in economic affairs but are very liberal in their moral views, promoting gay rights, youth rights and anti nuclear policies. They are slightly anti military, wanting to keep military funding static but increasing spending on education and social services. They have enthusiastically supported the governments contact policies, and belive in extending the process.

Senator Oliver Sanchez, 51, was elected to the Senate 15 years ago. From Conradsville in the southern jungle regions, he is renowned for being non-conformists, refusing to wear suits and smoking in public. Married with one son.

The Peoples Party draw their main support from the poor peoples of the southern jungle and mangrove regions. They are anti free trade and are generally non-committed morally. They are anti military but believe in the police force. They have supported the government in its contact policies.

Mayor Kathy Chung, 35, was narrowly elected mayor of her home city of Oliver City in 2000 after 4 recounts. She has been involved in left wing politics since she was a teenager. She has one daughter and is divorced.

The Socialists were founded in 1938 and have quickly become a force in Ollielands politics. They are anti free trade and very liberal in moral affairs. They also advocate wholesale change in Ollielands political structure, replacing the governor with a president and renaming the country as a republic.

Well, Bob, what can we say? An unprecedented turn of events halfway through tthe election.

It certainly is, Shari. Never before have we seen such a high vote for the communists. Certainly unprecedented, and unexpected.

We have even recieved rumours about vote riging and outside influences. Heard anything Bob?

Well Shari, the rumour mill is going into overdrive, especially here in Oliver City. Accusations have been flying from lower members of all four of the main parties, and the communists are just keeping quiet.

So, Bob, predictions for the next week?

Shari, I'd hate to predict anything in this election, but at the moment, it looks like the main parties are staging a bit of a comeback. The CPO hasd fallen below 50% for the first time in this election, and there is talk of a grand coalition to keep the left wing out of power in the Congress. The balance of power will most likely rest with the socialist party, and will depend whether they join a grand coalition or ally themselves with the communists.

And what about the race for the Green House?

Well, at the moment, Shari, the second round would between the Socialists and the Communists. This could disenfranchise many voters. Who knows what the political or social repurcussions could be.

Thanks for your comments Bob. And now to Steve at the sports desk, with news of last nights big football match between the Army and the Navy...

- The Green House, oliver City

Governor Daniel Allen strode up and down the oblong office in rage, occassionally thumping his desk. His son and advisors looked on, unsure of what to say.

"So what do we do when the commies take over? Just roll over and let them take our country apart?". Steve Lachten, Secretary for defence, broke the silence.

"What can we do?" replied the Governor. "Its an election, idiot! Will of the people and all that!"

"But we can't let them take over!" cried Oliver Allen, the Governors son and Governor General (a symbolic position).

"Look" pipped in Oliver van Hoogst, Secretary for the Interior, "the nations only in trouble if they take over the senate as well as the Green House. So they get a communist Governor, so what? If they don't control congress they can't do shit."

"But" countered Lachten, "if their vote picks up or they ally with the socialists the nations sunk. They'll take the Green House and Congress. No more colony, no more military and the dream of becoming a world power after all these years of isolation dies on it's arse."

"So, what if they didn't win the election?" suggested Oliver Allen

All eyes turned on the young man, some tinged with interest, some with horror.

"It could be done", said Diane Cook, director of the Colonial Intelligence Agenmcy, rising form her seat in the corner. "Accusations of electoral fraud, 'lost' ballots, a few criminal candidates, even 'lost' candidates if we have to. It can be done"

"No it couldn't" said the Governor firmly. "This nation has been dedicated to democracy for the last 500 years and we're not going to change that. Not for anything"

"Not even to save the nation from itself?" said Lachten. "Look, we can count on the support of all the all parties except the socialists and the isolationists. The church would support us as would the civil service, and the military and police are practically in our pockets. The commies would destroy our nation, take it apart piece by piece and set us back 500 years, socially, economically, militarily and diplomatically. Just give me the order and team2 from the Colonial Marine Corps Commandoes can take these scum to the cleaners."

The Governor looked up carefully. "I'll pretend I didn't hear that Steve. Now look, this disscussion is over. Officially we wait for the results and carry out business as usual. Unofficially, we start preparing. Dianne can start looking into setting up some communist fraud cases, and Steve can put the commandoes on standby - thats standby only, Steve. Until the final results are in, however, we wait"

"And incidentally, this meeting never took place"

Ivan Chernenko was starting to panic slightly. The early euphoria of the election had given way to some serious thought. His pary had never polled as high as a full percentage point before, and they were only in Congree thanks to proportional representation. Their policies were based on dogma and belief, no real practical considerations.

Ivan had become a communist ib his teens, and could remember his fathers disaproval. Hed worked hard to build up the movement and try to make them a force in Ollieland. It had never really paid off - until now. In two weeks, he could be sitting in the oblong office. Him, in the Green House!

He shook his head to try to think straight. "They" would stop him, wouldn't they? The establishment would never allow him to take over. Not unless he had outside support. But from where?

Kathy Chung had been real busy over the last couple of days. Her Socialist Party looked like it would hold the balance of power in the Congress, and she was being courted by nearly every party leader with nearly evry promise under the sun. She knew the only chance of achieving her goal of widespread constitutional change was to side with the communists, but she also knew this woulkd be economic suicide, not to mention a return to isolationism, something she certainly did not want.

It was also quite clear that she would end up running against Ivan for the position of Governor. Governor, hah! She would rid the nation of that archaic position and install a proper presidential system. All depended now on who she could best work with to achieve that goal...

Live Broadcast from CBS (Colonial Broadcasting Service)

Well, Bob, most of the results are now in. How are you seeing it?

I must say, Shari, this is a turning point in the history of the nation. Never before have the left wing parties taken such a high proportion of the vote.

Can you run us through the parties one by one, Bob?

Sure thing, Shari. As we can see, the Democrats, Conservatives and Liberals are all hovering on the 10% mark, a new low for all them, but the Peoples Party has gone into meltdown. An average turnout for the Fascists and Isolationists and again meltdown for the Greens, barring any late surge. Of course the real story here is the Socialist and Communist vote, currently totalling exactly 50% together.

So, Bob, whats the likely turnout? Are we going to see ahung Congress?

In my opinion, yes. The Socialists are unlikely to do a deal with the communists, and if their vote falls as it has done in the later stages of this election, they won't be able to form a majority. The Fascists and Isolationists are unlikely to deal with anyone, so it all comes down to if the four main parties can deal with Kathy Chung. If they throw their weight behind her campaign, they can form majority in Congress, and maybe push her into the Green House ahead of the Communist candidate Ivan Chernenko. It all depends if they are prepared to pay her price.

Which is?

We just don't know yet.

Thanks for that commentary Bob, and we'll see you at the post election show. Now, over to Wincie Willis for the weather....
