[Earth II] Hawdawg Invades Sweden

6am Local Time

As the sun broke over the Eastern Bay large jet aircraft could be faintly picked out overhead. The natives of Stockholm grew restless these planes had the blue flag of Hawdawg. This could only mean one thing, invasion. A distant bell could be heard beginning to toll. Parachutes could be seen to the west of town almost like a line of ants in the sand. The Airborne Forces of Hawdawg were battle-hardened for sure. Bootcamp in Hawdawg was often worse than actual fighting. One thing was for certain the grasp for land was on. Three Divisions of Hawdawg troops would jump on this day, along with the material they would need for an extended stay. Off the coast Tarawa and Wasp Class ships lay anchor ready to deploy the 3rd Marine Expeditionary Force. The BattleCruiser HMS Doberman struck first by sinking the Fishing Trawler Krisk when it moved too close to the fleet. As she opened up, three small patrol boats came around the jetty in the bay. Brave these men where staring down nine 54 caliber cannons. All three were dispatched to the sea floor in an instant. This would be a long day.

Wharf 12 Warehouse
(Former Frozen Food Cold Storage Building)
Central Command Headquarters

Inside this abandoned warehouse the 2nd MEF Commander Ben "Blood and Guts" Smith walked into the makeshift CENTCOM center that was still in the process of being setup to brief his officer corps. Small arms fire could be heard to the North as Commander Smith began to speak.

"Men the SITREP here is tense to say the least. We had some small resistance earlier today prior to our LST landings here in the Docks. That "problem" was solved with the 54 caliber cannons on the Yabari BC HMS Ironsides. I am glad to report most of the citizens of Stockholm have remained inside there homes as requested. The pamphlet drop we made yesterday must have made an impact. We have control of about 50% of the city as we speak. Elements of small Militia commando-style groups have been trading small arms fire with the 4th and 5th Battalions all day. The man concentration of guerilla forces is in the semi-industrial section of town known as "The Quarters". This region lends itself to several natural features which make defensive perimeters easy to erect. Aerial RECON has reported several makeshift roadblocks and burning cars and debri on Holcomb St. running directly through this area. We believe this is the location the Militia will make its last stand tomorrow.

In the meantime, we have reasonable intel reporting that large scale commando-style raids on our perimeters will commence around 11pm. I have ordered hardened roadblocks to be established by our troops at key locations and double patrols on our flanks will setup defensive positions to keep the enemy at bay. We will run a Claymore Defensive Strategy tonight U-Formations to ward off any suicide-style missions. Since the city is in a state of lockdown and no citizens are allowed outside of there homes past 8pm, anyone seen on the street will be summarily shot no questions asked.

The main portion of our Armor is being off-loaded as I speak in the harbor. We expect to have 75% of our battle capable tanks and IFV's in action tonight. The militia has only small arms and a limited number of anti-tank weapons at there disposal. They are simply going to try and delay our advance until they can muster more assistance from the countryside. We will start precision bombing tonight with round-the-clock sorties into "The Quarters" until sufficient damage has been done to render the militia force inoperable.

Our main problem area today seems to be the Bromma International Airport. The 6th and 7th Battalions have been taking fire all day from Hardened positions strategically scattered throughout the airport complex. Air strikes have been called in, but the pilots are having a hard time picking out the targets amongst the wreckage on the tarmac. I am afraid it will take several days to secure this airport. Additional Armor Units will be sent to this locale to aid in rooting out the problem. Earlier today Barkaby Airfield was secured by the 4th Marine RECON and they have established control over the airport grounds. We can receive resupply flights into Barkaby Airfield when needed.

We also need to expidite the linking up with 666th Airborne Devil's Division. Commander Wink radioed me earlier and stated they overshot the drop zone by 1 click. All the men and material have been gathered and they are currently holding a perimeter around the abandoned Military Airbase at Marsta. Commander Wink says they have munitions and supplies to last for two days. This is the window we have to work with. If the Militia gets organized and finds a weapons cache or some old Armor somewhere the Airborne boys will be in trouble. Lets make a concerted effort to open the road to Marsta as quickly as possible.

The key to this operation is the clean up in "The Quarters" commence the bombing at 9pm. Bring the three Yabari Class BattleCruisers alongside the docks and use the naval guns to assist as support artillery. Gentlemen lets make this happen."

Commander Smith stood and saluted his officers as they all scrambled to do his bidding.

Stockholm

"As the clock struck 9 the Yabari Class BattleCruisers trained there guns onto "the quarters" and commenced firing. After a 30 minute onslaught the quarters was reduced to rubble. What free-standing structures that survived the initial naval bombardment was destroyed by the Fighter/Bomber Wings from the carrier fleets. At 10pm the quarters was a smoldering pile of broken bricks and mortar. The resistance fighters force, estimated in numbers at 3,500 men, lost it strategic hold on the city. Destroying the HQ of the Militia scattered the enemy and will drive them to our ambush points. Estimated enemy casualties 750-1,000. We will know more when patrols are sent in at daybreak. Until then the area will be sealed-off. With the elimination of this pocket of resistance the road to Marsta is open. We have sent the 2nd Calvalry Unit to spearhead the advance to Marsta and the 6th Supply Regiment is in tow. We expect to have relief supplies to the 666th Airborne in 36 hours, barring any unforseen hiccups." The young Lt. Colonel saluted Commander Smith after he finished his report.

"Thank you Lt. Colonel. Keep me abreast of the situation, I am going outside to smoke a cigar. Its going to be a long night." Commander Smith stood up and went into the dark to have a Havana's Finest as the glow from the fires in the quarters could be seen to the North.

Abandoned Military Airbase
Temporary Command Post
Marsta, Sweden
12pm

Commander Wink was awaken by the sound of mortar rounds dropping into the perimeter. Mortars where bad news for the Airborne Troops they had hastly prepared a defensive position around the Airbase but didn't have enough men to place forward advance teams out to a distance mortars would be uneffective on there position. The Commander called for his Sniper Team leader Lt. Hacker. As Hacker arrived Commander Wink opened up, "Hack glad you are here. Listen the mortar's are screwing everything up here. They are going to zero in on our equipment and destroy what little armor and supplies we have. Can your boys help us out? I can't offer any cover fire this will be a totally unsupported mission and I can't even give you specifics on enemy strength. We are running blind here Hack.", Commander Wink stated. "No problem sir, I have 8 teams ready to go right now. We will crawl to the perimeter and see if we can pick out these targets of opportunity. The only thing is sir, for the sake of stealth, you may have to endure the shelling for a few more hours, until my men are in position. I ask that the perimeter forces hold all out-going fire at least until daylight. This should cut down on any FF incidents. Once we are outside of the perimeter we will be out of contact with you sir, but I guarantee those pesky mortars won't be working by 6am." Lt. Hack said. "That's what I like to here Hack. I will issue the ceasefire-only shoot identifiable targets order ASAP. Get your men on the job oh and happy hunting," Commander Wink stated as he saluted Lt. Hack. "Yes, sir." Lt. Hack blurted out as he saluted spun and trotted out the Command Post.

Lt. Hack gathered his 8 two-man sniper teams together for a quick briefing. "Men here is the situation. We are taking mortar fire from locations outside our perimeter. Estimates on the sound signature place the mortars at 1500-2000 meters out. From what we can detect we have at least 4 mortar positions to deal with. Unknown enemy troop strength at these positions. I know your teams usually work independently but tonight we will have 4 teams of 4 working a sector. Team one will take Northern positions, Team two will take Eastern positions, Team three will take Western positions, and Team four will take Southern positions. Your task is to do a search out to 2500 meters, locate the enemy mortar positions and eliminate the crews maning the tubes. Once the crew has been eliminated, the tubes and all mortar ammunition is to be destroyed. Each team will be provided with 4 phosphorous grenades. These should do the trick on the tubes. Your teams have been selected for this task for your ability to slip in undetected and reak havoc among the enemy. Remember men, you will have no radio contact with HQ so if you get in trouble you are on your own. We won't be able to provide air or artillery support at all due to our radio blackout and short supply of munitions. In addition to these fun filled facts, we need all of you to be in a hide before daybreak to eliminate the chance of FF incidents. All our perimeter guards have been issued a no fire order unless they have an identifiable target tonight. Is anyone having second thoughts?" Lt. Hack waited for anyone to say they didn't want to take the mission. The silence was deafening. "Good luck gentlemen. Bring me good news tomorrow." Lt. Hack saluted the sniper teams as they headed for the perimeter fence and into the night.

Outside of Northern Perimeter....................

Sniper Team one had been crawling up a ridgeline outside the Airbase for what seemed like hours. In realtime it had only been about 45 minutes. During the slow-crawl the men had seen quite a bit of evidence of enemy activity in the area. As the men came within 50 yards of the ridge crest a glowing cigarette could be picked out beside a tree. A sentinel or a spotter for the mortar crew no-doubt. The curiousity was confirmed when the squalk of a two-way radio broke the silence of the setting. This man was spotting for the mortar crew. All four members talked with the hand signals they had mastered in sniper school it was obvious the spotter was alone, but the team would crawl into a closer position to be sure before the target was engaged.

When the team reached 30 yards a quick observation of the spotter and the area around him with night-vision gear confirmed his lonely position. With a "thwack" the .308 round from the Silenced Winchester Bolt-Action found its mark between the eyes. This man would spot no more. With the forward observer MIA the Mortar crew would eventually become curious and possibly send out a patrol to investigate. The Mortar Pit had to be close within 1/2 mile for the short range walkie talkie to work. The team figured a response would come within 30 minutes so this was the window they had to work with.

The Team moved stealthly down the draw and as the crossed a small stream the hand signal to halt was given. 60 yards NNE of there current position the Mortar Pit could be seen. As the team spread out to observe there prey, the mortar crew began to feed the tube with HE rounds. A total crew of five men ran this tube with one man standing to the side as the obvious leader. The team carefully divided up shooting assignments and on que they each dropped the first four targets with one shot. The only mortar pit crew member not killed in the initial attack crouched behind the tube desperately trying to get a fix on the direction of the attack. Alas he was dispatched in much the same way his fellow members where. The .308 round is not kind. Quickly the team scampered to the tube and dropped two phosphorous grenades inside. The metal at the base simply turned into jelly as the whitehot fire melted the thin metal and rendered the mortar useless. As a cynical trick all the unused mortar boxes of ammunition where piled together. A single grenade with the pin pulled was placed between two of the boxes. When the enemy came to salvage the mortar rounds, the movement of the boxes would trigger the grenade and blow up the ammunition and the enemy soldiers there to take it.

Sniper Team One reassumed the highground where the spotter was stationed and set up a miniperimeter for observation of any troop movements. One thing was for sure, the Northern Mortar was out of action for good.

Outer Perimeter
Abandoned Airbase

As dawn broke, the four sniper teams had completed the task assigned, four mortar tubes lay as twisted piles of metal useless for raining death upon the AirBase. Now each team was carefully tucked into hides playing the observer. These skills were instilled in the teams early on in training and they prided themselves in the art of stealth and stillness. From there high positions in the bluffs they could see the enemy militants coming from a mile away. This would turn out to be a good thing for these men.............

9:53am
Northern Sniper Team Hide
As the men rested and observed a loud explosion could be heard NE of there position. Evidence of the return of the rebels to the mortar pit was obvious by the smoke in that direction. The grenade left under the mortar ammunition box had done its trick. As the men carefully lay in wait an ominous rumbling could be heard coming closer. The clickity-clack was a telltale sign something with tracks was headed there direction. Team leader MSGT. Holtz offered a calming presence to these men, his devotion to the cause and his legendary battle-hardened style made him a popular choice for squad leader. With four national championships for longe range target shooting under his belt, he wasn't a slouch with his M-14 either. As the noise drew nearer he broke silence to remind the men they were in the best possible position they could hope for and the enemy wouldn't see them unless they wanted them too. As MSGT. Holtz watched six old M-60 Tanks waddled by there position flanked by a three ancient 2 Ton trucks towing what looked like German made 88's. A large support group of 50 militia men followed behind the armor. As the enemy slipped by, the MSGT. took careful notes in his field book. When they moved out of sight he signaled the men it was time to move. This information had to be returned to HQ as fast as possible, because ANY armor was a problem. This was especially worrisome because of the field guns traveling with them. They could shell the AirBase and attack with armor in a coordinated attack and possibly overrun the defenses established. The men slowly deserted there hide and move methodically towards the perimeter ever so watchful for enemy movements among the underbrush.

Airborne HQ
Airbase outside of Martsa

As the Northern Sniper team crossed into no-man's-land a sentry on post called out to them.

Sentry: Halt, identify yourselves.

MSGT. Holtz: Sniper Team One, MSGT. Holtz. and quit aiming at me private, I not in the mood.

Sentry: Yes Sir!

MSGT. Holtz turned to his team and dismissed them so they could get some well earned sleep. He turned and headed straight to HQ. Commander Wink was outside smoking one of his famous "Cuban Finest" Cigars when Holtz approached.

MSGT. Holtz: Sir, I have some intelligence I must share with you immediately. We have tanks and arty in the northern sector along with a 50 count of insurgents. They are heading due East and looked to be moving to set up a bombing position on our flanks. If the run a coordinated attack with the arty they could potentially overrun our position.

Commander Wink: Thank you, MSGT. we have the situation well under control.

MSGT. Holtz: With all do respect sir, how?

Commander Wink: 2nd Calvalry should be here any minute.

As the two were talking a loud set of explosions rocked the base. Artillery fire was falling inside the perimeter. This had to be ordinance from the 88's Holtz had seen earlier in the day. As men scrambled for foxholes carnage ensued.

Commander Wink grabbed the phone and frantically called for 2nd Cav. Finally a response.

Commander Wink: 2nd Cav, 2nd Cav, recieving heavy fire, over. What is your ETA to AirBase?

2nd Cav. Lead Tank: AirBase, this is Lt. Jefferies, we are 10 minutes from your position. We are currently engaging a group of enemy tanks. We will be arriving shortly.

Explosions and plumes of smoke could be seen in the distance and the shelling stopped almost as quick as it started. For what seemed like ages, the 2nd Cavalry finally rolled into the AirBase around dusk with the 6th Supply Regiment. The men finally could rest easy they had linked up with the main force. All was quite and the men could feel the end drawing ever so closer.

We have no quarrel with the people of Sweden. The main combatants in this invasion are leftover insurgents from a failed government. This ragtag group is trying to hold on to something that is simply a memory. Our troops take great pride in inflicting damage to enemy combatants not citizens. Great pains have been taken to avoid civilian casualities in this conflict, true things happen, but we strive to keep these incidents to a minimum. Now if you don't care for what we are doing, well then tough, your threats don't really scare us and frankly are amusing.

As more equipment came online, General Smith now had an open link of communication with the Ministry of Defense. As the General poured his morning coffee the Computer came to life with an incoming message.

Hawdawg Invasion Fleet deverted
from WIckian Coast. Will arrive in
Stockholm within 24 hours. Will
provide air patrols and shore support.

Signed,

Minister of Defense

Gen. Smith: Well some relief is in sight, eh. At least we will have some additional air cover. Someone get me a SITREP please.

General's Aide: Sir, we have reports that Martsa has been secured. The 2nd Cavalry and 6th Supply Regiment linked up with the 666th Airborne yesterday. Both the 666th and 2nd Cav did a sweep of Martsa and cleaned out the rest of the resistance in the area. Some armor was encountered, it was promptly destroyed. We still have pockets of resistance to the North, but the numbers of insurgents are shrinking.

Gen. Smith: What about insurgent leadership, do we have any intel on them?

General's Aide: Sir, the main leaders name is Henry Yansko. From the material we have gathered he served in the Foreign Legions of Tehoma before he was reprimanded for "extra" curricular activities. He has training in counter-terrorism tactics, and CQB. From the file we gathered he also has explosive expertise.

General Smith: Once you cut the head of a snake, the rest of the body goes limp and dies.

General's Aide: Sir?

Gen. Smith: Nevermind, an old adage. Do we have his wereabouts pinpointed?

General's Aide: Sir, it appears Yansko was in Stockholm as recently as two days ago. He apparently vacated when the bombing in the Quarters started. We have reason to believe he has moved operations to Rattvik.

Gen. Smith: I want a team assembled for RECON of Rattvik. I want a quiet insert. We need some eyes there to let us know how to tackle our objective.

General's Aide: Sir, what is our objective?

Gen. Smith: To eliminate the resistance by removing the glue that holds it together. Get me a RECON team in here ASAP, we need them on the ground now!

The aide ran from the office, to contact the only RECON team leader he knew could pull off this mission, GSGT. Raze.

We would like to thank you for your offer of assistance. At this time we have the resistance all but wiped out. Within the next 48 hours, we expect to eliminate the leader of the enemy force. We also are reinforcing our troops on the ground with two MEF's that were embedded with our naval fleet for the invasion of The WIck. 9pm Marsta AirBase

The meeting was brief on the tarmac MSGT. Raze had assembled his Fire Team as requested and as Commander Wink approached Raze new something was up. As the rotor-wash of the UH-60 made conversation difficult.

Commander Wink: Raze, is that you?

GSGT. Raze: Yes, sir.

Commander Wink: Good, I planned to meet with you earlier in the HQ, but we haven't swept the facility for bugs and I didn't want this mission compromised. You are to be airlifted to a location outside of Rattvik. Your job is to observe and record said information on the following target: Henry Yansko. He is touted as the leader of the formal resistance and we need intel on his armaments, manpower, and layout of his HQ for a SF strike.

Commander Wink pulled a photograph from a manilla folder and gave the picture to GSGT. Raze.

Commander Wink: You are not to engage the target unless absolutely necessary. Stealth will be your only ally. We have air support in the area, but they will only be available for a precision strike.

GSGT. Raze: I see, well we better get going sir.

Commander Wink: We will bomb the National Guard Armory in Rattvik as a diversion for your insert. This should draw attention away from your team.

As the UH-60 took off GSGT. Raze briefed his team. The cool and calm attitude was evident in the Helicopter ride to Rattvik. Most members of his team had previously fought with him in Sicily and never were afraid of a challenge. As legends go, this team stayed was the best RECON unit available and had proven themselves many times in very difficult situations. This would be no walk in the park, but GSGT. Raze had a nack for solving the unsolvable.

Outside of Rattvik.........

As the UH-60 pulled up in a hover in all dark mode, the men fast-roped down to the ground and quickly scurried into the woodline. Commander Wink was true to his word, the airstrike had happened minutes before the hover. The fire could be seen on the edge of town. The glow lit up the night sky with a milky-orange glow.

Gunny took his team through the evergreen trees following the ridge-line that would lead them to the SW corner of town. A small bridge lay between them and a great observation point that gave them a commanding view of this end of town. As they neared the bridge, the rumblings of armor could be heard. Fearing a Mechanized Airborne attack, the resistance had dispatched a tank to this bottle-neck to seal access to this corner of town. The old Russian T-80 grinded to a halt directly in the center of the bridge and the 2-ton truck following stopped as 12 men spilled out of the back. They hurriedly spread wire across the bridge buttress and set up a defensive position. The gunny turns to his men and gives the all stop hand signal.

GSGT. Raze: (whisper) Hold, lets study this situation a bit and see if we can find an easier way across. All this activity means somebody important has to be here.
Hawdawg
26-03-2005, 06:03
GSGT. Raze carefully used his spotting scope to scour the creekbed to locate a safe crossing point to avoid the Bridgehead. At last he spied an old elevated waterline that crossed the creek 700 yards downstream. This would be the teams access point. He gave hand signals to his fire team and they slowly methodically moved towards the crossing. What seemed like hours (really only minutes) passed as one by one the team crossed the pipeline headed for the observation point.

With the team safely across and away from the Bridgehead the GSGT. took a reading from his GPS unit. This would come in handy when an airstrike needed to be called in. An exploding tank on a bridge would definitely draw attention away from the fire team if they needed to make a hasty exit from town. As the open ground gave way to suburban streets the Gunny kept his men in the back alleys behind the buildings. Many people had once lived on this end of Rattvik, but when the local "Communist Party" seized control of the town, most of the native Risha living on the South End fled fearing retaliation for years of hardships they inflicted on the Communist sympathizers. Only a few proud families remained in the two highrise apartment buildings they approached and they wouldn't be sending out messages to the Resistance foreign troops were around.

The team stopped outside Tower II and discussed the protocol for the mission.

GSGT. Raze: Ok, men. We are to secure the top floor of this abandoned complex and set up RECON on our favorite bad guy, Henry Yansko. We have intel that he moves troops and equipment nightly down this main corridor strengthening his perimeter as he sees fit. We are to establish patterns, weapons lists, manpower, etc. We have strict orders not to engage. We are supported only by limited air strikes and will most likely not have a helo extract. Any questions?

Fire Team: No Sir

The team moved to the 28th floor and set up shop. To the South the Main Route through town could easily be seen. The team assembled there spotting scopes, digital equipment, and satellite linkage. As they watched the resistance force moved heavy trucks, and material throughout the night all across town. Now if only Yansko would show himself.

_________________________________________________________________

Two Days Later.....................

As time worn on the Rebel Force seemed to have an urgency about there preparations for the impending battle for Rattvik. So much so they had abandoned night only movement of troops and supplies. Under constant harassment from OA-10 Warthog's the Insurgents tried to fortify there defensive positions.

Right at dusk, a figure came into view that got the Gunny's attention. A small formation of men had formed outside the makeshift Rebel "HQ". As GSGT. Raze adjusted his spotter scope he couldn't believe what he saw. Yansko was standing in front of these men giving some sort of pep talk. It was now or never. He signaled his team to get into position. The distance to target was 1700 meters.

GSGT. Raze grabbed the Satellite COM and sent a flash message to Commander Wink.

GSGT. Raze: Target acquired, optimum range, ideal opportunity, please advise.

A stratchy voice could be heard on the reciever. It was Wink.

Commander Wink: Green light, Evac Plan Delta for extract ETA 15 minutes Rooftop, over.

GSGT. Raze: Roger, out.

Gunny tapped his shooters, they knew what to do. Both men dialed in there M82A1 .50 caliber rifles on the target. At a precise moment, both would fire. They had to make it count another opportunity like this would not present itself to them. Three...Two...One....

The echo was deafening dust was kicked up off the floor as both rifles discharged at the same instant. What seemed like minutes later GSGT. Raze watched a horrified group of rebels scatter as there leader was literally torn into two halves from the AP Rounds. What was a proud leader was now a pile of unrecognizable flesh. The chaos that developed from this would be the cover needed for the EVAC.

As a chopper came in fast and low to Tower II, GSGT. Raze had his men hustle to the roof top. Just as the Helicopter settled into a hover the inbound Airstrike on the Bridge took out the old T-80 Tank and the Defensive Position the Gunny and his Fire Team had avoided several nights before. As the men climbed into the UH-60 small arms fire started to hit the Helicopter. Two of the men were hit, but the UH-60 managed to lift off and make its return leg to Stockholm.

_________________________________________________________________

1 Week after the Yansko Asassination

With the death of the Leader of the Insurgency, the Militia went the way of the Do Do Bird. Many fighters simply laid down there arms and returned home to saddened to carry on. An envoy from the North arrived in Stockholm to ask for pardons for the fighters still not willing to surrender. Commander Wink and his staff took interest in this meeting.

Envoy: We ask that all war crimes against the freedom fighters be null and void and at that time all fighters will lay down arms and return to there homes.

Commander Wink: Okay, so our men die the men you represent have their blood on their hands and we are supposed to turn the other cheek?

Envoy: I realize this is difficult but perhaps a good will jesture will ease the tension.

Commander Wink: Obviously you don't know our people. We are a peaceful bunch. We only came here to offer stability something this land hasn't seen in quite some time now. We will allow for the rebels to surrender however they will have to plead there case to their peers not us, in the court system.

Envoy: I think this would be agreeable on there part I will contact them and send you a response.

Commander Wink: You have 24 hours, after that no quarter will be given.

As the envoy left Commander Wink gathered his most trusted of the staff and shut the door:

Commander Wink: When these men surrender and turn over there weapons, we will grant them a jury of peers. Only the jury will be Hawdawg Military. For combatants should judge combatants. This plan doesn't leave the room.

And so it came to pass. A total of 2500 men surrendered to Hawdawg forces within the preceding month. Huge caches of weapons, explosives, and ammunition were seized. In the end most of the Insurgents were granted "extended" stays in the Hawdawg Prison System, but not before the Military Court gave them a fair and fully legal trial by jury. Peace was now at hand in Sweden.
