Joint Layarteb-Pelepian Force Invades Ireland {Earth II}

The eyes of the empire had turned towards home. They turned across the sea to the Emerald
Isle. Their diaspora had dragged on long enough. When they'd left Ireland centuries ago they'd
had nothing. Out of this nothing they managed to somehow build one of the most powerful empires
in the world. But they still longed for their homeland, the rolling green hills and the music
of the countryside. It pained them to see it in the hands of someone else. It pained them that
it was not theirs. The spirit of Irish heroes lived on in them, the passion of their struggles
still burned in their hearts. They'd left Ireland but Ireland had never left them. So with a
heavy heart the decision was made to go to war to take back what once had been theirs.

General Seamus Fitzgerald turned an ice cube between his fingertips, dangling it precariously
above a glass of scotch whisky. The city of Brasilia was spread out before him. In the distance
he could see Paranao Lake, the light of the rising sun danced upon it surface sending shimmers
up into the city. He had not slept that night. He rarely slept when he had to make decisions
such as this. The whisky helped, he wasn't drunk because he could hold it well, but it cleared his head.
His decision hadn't been made public as of yet. It had been quite some time since they'd been
involved in any serious military conflict. There'd been skirmishes and minor rebellions
but their dominance over their territories was well established now. The heroes who'd helped
take the South American and African territories had long since hung up their boots. In his age
the romanticism of it all had faded. He'd seen too many people, too many friends, die. His ideals
had been replaced by cynicism. But he wanted to be remembered. Henry Connell would always be remembered
for his brilliant leadership during the great conquests. But he had not accomplished anything like
that. He'd kept his country safe but that didn't satisfy him. He wanted his place among the heroes.
A place in the verses of future generations. His death was fast approaching, he knew it, and he wouldn't
go quietly into the night. He would leave his stamp on the Empire and the World. He would be remembered.
The ice cube that he turned between his fingers slipped between them and splashed into the glass.

The meeting with the Layartebian diplomats had gone well. An agreement had been made to join their
militaries into one expeditionary force. They'd take Ireland as a whole and draw the borders after
the country was in their hands. They'd operate under two generals, Seamus Fitzgerald himself and a
general from Layarteb who had not yet been determined. They expected that Ireland would fall without
much trouble. The current communist regime was already losing control over the people and had all but
retreated to Dublin. They had not bothered to spend any money on their defense and the resistance would
be left up to the few people who supported the defunct administration. Also, he suspected they'd be more
then welcome with many of the people. Both Layarteb and Gnoolocopelep had origins in Ireland and both
simply wanted to go home. Seamus would begin determining what deployments would be appropriate. Whatever
he decided to send, they'd leave within two weeks.

Three Carrier Groups and approximately five-hundred thousand men left the island of Trinidade on the
morning of March Sixth. It was indeed possible that too much force was being used, but Seamus always
had felt too much force was better then not enough, that and it wasn't like they couldn't spare the
firepower. They travelled north, where they would join up with a Layartebian Fleet and make their way home.

The disarray on the Irish isle was enough to arouse the attention and suspicion of the Empire. When word of a Pelep invasion rang through, the Layartebian miltiary instantly moved to position. Elements of the 3rd Fleet were already in place for Operation Gray Storm in central Europe. With them was a large detachment of Army forces. But, it wasn't enough. While an emergency, quick-ready force got ready in Layarteb, they would have to do. The detachment consisted of about 9,000 soldiers but they were only going to send in 3,000. The former Dublin Commune government had spent no money on defense and had no military, therein what little resistance there would be would come from farmers and towns-folk.

On the decks of the many Layartebian ships, helicopters buzzed. Pelepian forces would be landing in the north and Layartebian forces in the south. For the Layartebians, it was Kerry and Dublin on the western and eastern coasts, respectively.

All at once, the armada of helicopters consisted of CH-53E Sea Stallions, MV-22A Ospreys, SH-60F Sea Hawks, and UH-95A Huey IIs. Fourteen landing zones were established in Kerry and Dublin, eight and six, respectively. As the armada of helicopters headed into the rising sun, their cabins were filled with the deafening roar of silence. The men didn't know what they were getting into and they didn't know what the situation was either.

When they touched down, they dropped immediately to the ground and hid as the helicopters took off. Air support would be available, if necessary, but for the most part, they were on their own. It had begun, the invasion of the Irish isle. Now whatever lay ahead awaited them.

The three Pelepian carrier groups arrived to the south of the Emerald Isle. They split up, one fleet travelling to Cork to blockade the River Lee and thus the city. The other two groups travelled north up the coast. One took up position in Galway Bay and the other travelled farther north to Donegal Bay. Total naval superiority was established within an hour of their arrival. Landing points were selected in Donegal City, Sligo City, Ballyshannon, Galway City, Enistimon, Cork City, and Youghal. If the cities fell, it was reasonably safe to assume the rest of the county would fall as well. Helicopters picked up off the decks of the massive carriers and amphibious assault vehicles sliced through the water, carrying Tuatha De Danaan Forces (Marines) and Red Branch Warriors (Army Special Forces) to the beaches. The helicopters hovered over the silent cities as the amphibious vehicles slammed beached themselves, with dozens of troops pouring out of their gaping mouths. They did not meet the staunch resistance that they might've met in other places. Instead, they were greeted by hundreds, if not thousands, of men and women pouring out of their homes to greet their liberators. The years of economic hardship under the communist regime was apparent. The streets were badly in need of paving, buildings were crumbling under their own weight, cars were a rare sight and piles of filth were located everywhere. The troops were soon made aware that the last and indeed few supporters of the previous regime had holed themselves up in the city halls of the various towns. It was there that all the fighting would occur.

In Cork, the City Hall was located on the bank of the river. Artillary positions were set up on the opposite bank on the street Lapps Quay. On the City Hall's side of the river a command center was set up on Copley Street and troops were dispersed strategically on the street and rooftops around City Hall. They moved into position quickly, setting up a six block perimeter around City Hall. The artillary guns launched shells through the windows and walls of City Hall. The explosions tore through the edifice, sending stone and plaster into the river below. Paper floated out the holes in the walls and danced upon the wind. The artillary guns continued their barrage, ripping through the building and doing untold damage to its interior. Then the barrage stopped. The helicopters that had been hovering above the scene descended into the smoke, scattering it across the river. Nearly the entire side of the building had been torn away by the shells and the pilots could see pretty much right into the building. Bodies littered the scene. There were dozens of them, hanging over the sides in agonized and twisted forms. Suddenly a single handgun unleashed its clip at the central helicopter the bullets embedded themselves in the helicopter's nose. The gunner, spotting a group of 15 people through the infrared, opened fire at a plaster wall. The rounds tore through plaster and the screams of the men rang out before they were instantly silenced. The Pelepian military machine had done its job. The choppers lifted and set down across the river. The Red Branch Warriors and the Tuatha De Danaan moved in to take care of whatever resistance still had the courage to stand up to them. The city was essentially theirs. Similar scenes ocurred all throughout the Emerald Isle as a new, foreign power once again imposed its will on the people. The coasts had fallen to them. They prepared for the push inland. They expected it to fall just as easily.

OOC: I was away for the weekend. I apologize for the delay.

3,000 men were on the ground in under half an hour. The men were sitting at fourteen landing zones. Then came the go code. They massed precisely and began the assault. The goal for the two groups was to take Kerry and Dublin within the day. They weren't far from the capitals of each county and they would be there by nightfall. Helicopters flew overhead, mostly UH-95A Huey IIs and AH-1W Super Cobras, armed with Miniguns, rockets, and TOW missiles. They scanned each path the forces would be using for armor or other resistance but nothing was coming up on their scopes. F-14E Super Tomcats flew over the isle providing CAP and F/A-18C Hornet and F/A-18E Super Hornets were loaded with weapons for CAS missions but there was just no possible targets. Something was wrong...

The 3,000 men in both Kerry and Dublin had advanced to the state capitals quickly. They met little to no resistance, some farmers with rifles and pitchforks protecting their land but that was about it. Lootting had taken place in some of the cities and for the most part, everyone was hunkered down protecting what was theirs. That was what anarchy brought to them, fear. But now, with the Layartebian soldiers on the ground there was light for them. Old city mayors and county governors that hadn't fled were there to greet the troops, though suspiciously.

They were well aware of the presence and of the might of the Layartebian military and they wanted security, they wanted an end to anarchy, even if it meant dealing with them. One mayor quoted as saying, "We'll deal with the devil for an end to anarchy but we'll look to God for the right path away from the guidance of the devil and alas he will speak and we will be free."

Within the first 6 days of the mission, some 10 counties were under Layartebian control. They included, in the west: Kerry and western Cork. In the east, they included: Dublin, Meath, Westmeath, Offaly, Laois, Killdare, Wicklow, and Wexford. They still needed the control and contain Carlow, Kilkenny, Tipperary, and Limerick. Waterford and eastern Cork would be under Pelepian control, for the time being...

Sporadic fighting from local warlords and militia groups, that armed themselves during the decline of the Dublin Communian government slowed down some of the Layartebians but not much. The available air support from the Hueys and Super Cobras allowed them to vanquish their enemies very fast. But, in the sixteen battles that they fought in, although they were minor, had seen 65 wounded Layartebian soldiers and 17 KIAs. A single UH-95A was downed by a militia surface-to-air missile but, in a sheer twist of irony, the carcass of the UH-95 landed directly on him.

With enough soldiers sitting in Dublin to repave all of the streets, the local rulling body, albeit a weakened and abandoned one, sought peace. "I am Jane Maculy, the governor of Dublin. I seek to speak with you." The governor screamed through a bullhorn from inside her barricaded office at City Hall. Outside there were three hundred soldiers and both helicopters and fighters were flying back and fourth.

"I am Major Hawdig, command leader here. I wish to speak to you in open air. I know not what you possess in there." The bullhorn returned.

"Meet me on the roof."

"Agreed." The major entered the City Hall with his immediate command staff, including six men, all armed heavily. They had encountered light resistance near a village about sixteen miles from the coast. They were definitely expecting far worse.

The major ascended to the roof with his bodyguards. They stood carefully, the ex-governor sitting on a chair. "You know this all used to be a peaceful place. But now it's chaos. The government fled because they were bankrupt." She wiped some tears from her eyes, her Irish accent conveying pure sadness. "Now you've come with your guns and your helicopters and how many hundreds are dead. All we want is peace."

"Well I am here to extend that. All we want is peace as well. If the nation of Ireland surrenders to us we will be prepared to grant it the status of autonomous republic, just as we've done with Kaliningrad. Do we want another Kaliningrad? No." The major spoke frankly.

"I'm the last one to be honest. Would I be granted position in the government?"

"Very much so. I have a full list of terms with me that I wish you to read over. I will order my men to stand down."

"Very well." She stood up and walked to him, as he held out the document. She would read it and agree and that was it. The minor operation that had taken place would be put to rest as the Layartebian forces seized full control over most of Ireland.

She looked over the document. "What's this about a Layartebian military force of determined size?" She looked around at the forces on the ground. "Is there a listing of just what you are deploying here?"

"Yes. I have that here as well." He picked out a piece of paper from his folder. "Here. I can trust you will keep this information quiet?"

"How dumb do I look when you are standing there with rifles and pistols and I have none." She took the paper.

She put the paper down. "Talk about a loaded list. You think that is sufficient to defend this place?"

"Yes ma'am. What do you suggest?"

"Well you'll need armor and vehicles for your border defenses. And what about the possibility of bombers?"

"That is being proposed but does not look good."

"Alright. Perhaps it is sufficient for the time being."

"Very well. What is left to iron out?"

"Me."

Layartebian News Network

"Today, in an astonishing development, Ireland has finally raised the flag of the Empire of Layarteb. We bring you to Dublin now, the capital of the new autonomous republic, to Jane Macaully, the president of the autonomous republic."

Jane Macaully was a 5'2" woman with long red hair and dark green eyes. She was pale, the standard Irish skin. Her gaze was one of history and one of intelligence. Tired and worn from the condition Ireland was left in, she stood at the podium straight and without remorse. "Good evening. My fellow citizens of Ireland. Today is the day that we can finally put an end to the fear and the uncertainty that is our lives. The Empire of Layarteb has annexed the following counties to the autonomous republic of Ireland. Those counties are Carlow, Dublin, Kerry, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Limerick, Meath, Offaly, Tipperary, Westmeath, Wexford, and Wicklow. Cork will be split into two areas, the western under Layartebian control. It is a good day for us as we return to our democracy and we return to our way of life but with the protection and superiority of the Empire of Layarteb. Thank you!" She stepped down and wiped her faced. Well that's over!

The news station returned to the news desk. "Well there you have it. The Autonomous Republic of Ireland. The Empire of Layarteb makes another population safer and freer than ever before."

Pelep, you still going with this because I think I'm done. I wish he had had a military or something...

Yeah, I pretty much figured that it was pointless to RP a war against someone who doesn't have an army.

Basically, we set up a temporary military government, quell the populace. Then we'd rebuild the stuff DC trashed while he was here and make Cork the capital of my empire.

You know with the history of Ireland we could eventually have lotsa trouble with Irish republicanism. But that's an RP for another day.
