Father One - The Absolute ruler of Zamyat, the One in his name is not intended to indicate his "firstness" but rather his unity, his epitomization of Zamyatin ideals. After frequent assassination attempts by an antiorder group, SHIVA, he has rarely - if ever - been seen by anyone outside the Benefactorium.

Benefactorium - A massive hierarchy of councils and committees, of unknown membership number and leadership. The highest of these is the aptly named Benefactorium Highest Council, which dictates ultimate policy. Benefactorium Foreign Council deals with international relation. The Council of Cleansing handles the policing of the state, and the Council of Administration handles day-to-day affairs such as the production of various products from food to entertainment. There is a separate Council of Administration for each District, as well as a small National Council of Administration which issues directives to the District Councils. Entry into the Benefactorium is determined by Civil Service Exam mandatory at age twenty.

Economy, Continued:

Zamyatin economy is self-contained, with production geared to match consumption in most areas and quotas for surpluses in areas deemed necessary for the survival or expansion of Zamyat by the Administrative Councils.

Private competition is not allowed. All production is state-directed. Failure to meet quota with sufficient quality will yield reprimand.

As has been previously stated, Surplus quotas are usually missed by approximately 31.2%, somewhat hindering national progress. Regardless, growth is fairly steady and the nation is heavily industrialized.

-----------------------------------

Infrastructure:

Electricity Production: 104 Billion kW/h
Electricity Consumption: 100 Billion kW/h
Electrical Production by Source:
Wind Farm - 32%, Solar - 20%, Petroleum - 18%, Geothermal - 10%, Nuclear - 10%, Natural Gas - 8%, Experimental Tokamak Fusion Reactor - 2%

Zamyat possesses a 100% urbanized population. Each administrative district possesses one major city of megalopolitan size, all operating on the same basic layout of subways and roadways. Factories and public facilities are located in the center of each city, while residential domes surround this central region. All buildings are constructed of a translucent green glasslike material, allowing for maximum police efficiency, except for those which require privacy - such as government buildings or those which could compromise national security if they were built of this translucent material.

Megalopoli are connected by the TraN (Transit Network), which connects all Administrative districts with all other Administrative districts, and serves primarily as a means for shuttling raw materials to areas of production.

Within an administrative district, areas outside the Megalopolis which possess valuable resources can also be reached by Tran, but are not permanently populated. Work crews are brought in by Tran, and exhausted work crews and raw materials are then brought out. Powerplants, which are kept outside of the cities, are operated much the same way.

Food production is not conducted on farms - vats of microbes produce a protein, carbohydrate, and fiber mixture that provides efficient nourishment for the body.

In order to maintain strict control of incoming information, Zamyat is ringed by radio distortion towers, to prevent incoming radio waves from the outside world from corrupting the purity of the Logic State.

-----------------------------------

Military:

The Zamyat Defense force is primarily defensive, and only possesses 200,000 soldiers, though they are well-trained and well-equipped. Military Authority is considering the expansion of Defense forces as a means of bringing Logical rule to all people of Earth, though this will require a breeding directive to inflate the population.

Zamyatin forces are at a modern level of technology

Misc...

The life of a Zamyatin is strictly regulated, with deviation from the designated schedules quickly and effectively reprimanded. Numbers showing resilience to disciplinary measures will be denumeralized - an x-ray operation which disables higher thought capabilities, relegating the patient to low-level menial duties in factory or mine work.

Every day includes two personal hours, which a number may use for whatever purpose it wishes. There are a variety of organizations which exist to suggest productive activities during these personal hours - such as the Street Hygienic Collective, which organizes numbers to spend personal hours cleaning streets and the translucent green glass, or the Logical Amateur Police Brigade, which trains amateur spies to root out unorthodoxy that Thinkpol may miss - and various public-minded groups in a similar vein.

Executions are rare, especially in the times when denumeralization can neutralize any threat to order or orthodoxy, but sometimes are conducted for the particularly violent or dangerous - these are public, conducted by electrocution.

All towns possess a Commonsector, which constantly displays propaganda and may be used for important announcements; in the latter case, numbers will first be summoned to the commonsector by PA.

Denumeralization is mandatory at age fifty, at which point the elderly are released into the wilds of Zamyat.

History:

Prior to Year 0, there was no love or happiness in the world. There was only fear, hatred, chaos, disarray, and violence. People would decry this state of affairs with one side of their mouth, but drink blood through the other. People loved chaos, except when it hurt them, resisting their natural impulses towards law and order in favor of suicidal hedonism. The human race flailed wildly, struck by a form of epilepsy called “Freedom,” which still plagues them today. The constantly verged on self-destruction of every kind, and finally one man rose against this parade of chaos and saved what small portion of society he could.

This man was Father One. He loved humanity very much, and it saddened Him to see them so hurt by their own hands. He envisioned a society where people would not hurt themselves anymore, a perfect society where people would live in harmony working for the good of each other. He came to this land, and founded the first city, which was called Center, as it was to be the Center of his new, perfect society. The day upon which the first million Zamyatins broke ground on their new city is the day by which we reckon the beginning of our calendar – Integration Day, Day One, Year Zero.

It was on this day that Father One presented the Guidance Equation to us, a complete system for living which would ensure prosperity through order. The day was regulated for maximum efficiency, and each citizen of the new society lived by a schedule which was rather lax by modern standards. The early Zamyatins still lived in “families,” and sexual relations were not yet regulated by breeding directives from the administrative council – no one could really predict how much food to produce, or how much available labor they could expect in the next year.

Yet despite its shortcomings, it was the foundation for a bright future. Father One refined the equation as his society continued to grow, until by Year 26, the first Protocol for Living Discipline was issued. Sexual relations were now restricted to a set number of nights per week, as determined necessary by the administrative councils.

It was this same year that the first Crime was committed in Zamyat. A man, whose name (numeric designations had not yet been introduced) was Adam Ivanovich – who copulated with his wife Yvonne every night, without the consent of the administrative council. Father One was very sad to see His perfect society corrupted by the desires they were supposed to have left behind in the old world. He knew He would have to punish Adam and Yvonne, if He wanted the society as a whole to survive. They were publicly flogged for the crime, and soon after repented, yet Father One knew that the problem has not ended merely because they had confessed, for now he knew that Chaos could still corrupt his microcosm.

Thus, in Year 27, he organized the foundation of Zamyatin Law: the Order of Cleansing, which we commonly call “Thinkpol” or “Sweepers,” and the Order of Reprimand, whose technicians sought to wrench chaos out of the hearts of the condemned, and preventing it from reentering. To their credit, Adam and Yvonne remained obedient for the remainder of their lives.

In Year 52, after a wave of crimes rebelling against the loving authority of Father One, it was decided that remnants of the Chaotic Old World, which were still spreading their sickening influence in the Dominion, should be purged out. Thus, the concept of the individual name, associating a person with an allegiance to family and themselves over society, was eliminated. By this time, families had largely been phased out, as Father One encouraged adults to increase their productivity by placing their children into the care of the Benefactorium’s nurseries. The name was the final holdover from this archaic institution, and now, it too was eradicated with the introduction of designation numbers.

Designation numbers were an extremely divisive issue, and a third of Zamyat refused to accept them, clinging to their names. Father One ordered them to be rounded up and Reprimanded, but they refused, and soon Civil War was loosed in Zamyat. The Rebel Leader, Louis Effir, became holed up in the southern portion of Center with four hundred heavily armed rebel soldiers. The warriors of Father One rose to his call to defend the State of Order with their very blood, flesh, and sweat, and took up arms in the name of Law.

The battle of Center took eleven days, and many noble warriors died in the brutal fighting at the hands of the rebels, and Effir escaped into the southern wilderness. Seven more years of fighting followed, with heavy losses on both sides. Finally, in Year 59, Effir was captured and tried before the entire State of Zamyat. Father One pronounced him guilty and he was sentenced to death. With his last breath, he proclaimed his love for Father One and his regret for betraying the rule of Logic. A monument now stands in Center portraying his final repentance and Father One’s ultimate forgiveness. With his death, Effir’s rebel movement soon collapsed.

In Year 63, Father One instituted a new revision to the Guidance Equation. It had been discovered that after the average age of fifty, individual productivity tended to decline steadily, while requirements of food and other amenities remained at the same levels or began to increase. To avoid further waste, all persons achieving the age of 51 were to be “denumeralized.” The ancient denumeralization procedure was not as effective as the modern medical process of the same name, and simply involved revoking a given person’s status as a citizen of the Dominion, and cutting them off from State support.

The new denumeralization procedure created additional problems however, as simply excluding the elderly from the Zamyatin equation did not prevent them continuing to hinder productivity. Some took to the streets, begging charity from still productive citizens, while others took to irrational acts of violence against the state. Father One found no alternative but to order the execution of all denumeralized persons. This, however, proved to be an incredible expenditure of resources, and much of the state’s energies were wasted terminating thousands of individuals each year who had outlived their productive lifespan.

In Year 80, the denumeralization problem boiled over, as a particularly large population bubble overstrained the State’s execution resources. Determined to eternally avoid their fate, some of the denumeralized chose to flee the State, and even took upon themselves names to replace their lost designations. Many older numerals soon joined them, fearing their own execution dates were quite near at hand. This became the Second Civil War. The names of these new traitors have been forever expunged from our histories, for their silly and illogical iniquities were so ridiculous that no moral lesson not already intuitively obvious could be extracted from the War. Much briefer than the first, the elderly numerals and denumerals were quickly subdued, with hundreds of captives taken.

Fortunately, the war had some advantages for the Logic State. Most of the 45-and-older age group had been eliminated, meaning that resources once slated entirely for eradicating inefficient persons were freed up for other endeavors. The captives were studied by Zamyatin neurologists, whose studies finally yielded a permanent solution that would quickly and cheaply denumeralize inefficient numbers.

They determined that a single clump of nerve cells controlled all higher thought-processes, and destroying them rendered a person utterly harmless – leaving merely an instinct-driven vessel, more monkey than man. The procedure they developed is still used today, where this clump is destroyed by three intersecting beams of X-Rays. Requiring little electricity and taking only a few seconds, X-Ray denumeralization drastically reduced the strains of denumeralization, and became not merely the State’s method of denumeralization, but also the final punishment used against irrationals resistant to all other methods of Reprimand.

By Year 90, Zamyat had reached the near-perfect state in which it still exists. Like a curve approaching an asymptote, so does our society slowly approach a perfectly regulated norm, with one exception – we shall one day intercept this asymptote.

Aiming to increase the potential population and productivity of Zamyat, Father One ordered the construction of the ten Administrative Districts surrounding Center in Year 112. Each as large as the original city, the Districts soon became thriving centers of production and commerce. In Year 113, in a final act of separating the perfect microcosm from the sick world, Father One ordered the construction of the radio barrier – a ring of radio stations pumping out electromagnetic noise, preventing any outside thoughts from entering. Society has continued much in this fashion to the present day.
