Wirraway

A hush fell over the crowded Command and Control center's media room as the Coordinator of the Concordiat strode to his podium. Photographers jostled in the aisles, craning and arching their bodies to get the best shot of the rarely seen leader of Wirraway. Crammed in beside them harried reporters whipped out their notepads and shifted on their feet, trying to remain comfortable after almost an hour of standing.
The room fell completely silent as the Coordinator reached the podium and firmly grasped both sides with his powerful hands. His rugged face looked out onto the assembled mass impassively, scanning the room with his dark brown eyes. He went over his speech in his head for a moment and then looking directly at the cameras beaming his visage to the nation, began to speak.
“I have called you here today to announce the dawning of a glorious new age in the Iron Concordiat. In our changing world a nation must function at its best to compete on the global stage. But what is a nation other than its people? Simply land, territory for which there is no use. It is you, the citizens of the Concordiat, who make our country great, who vanquish our foes and drive our economy. Although we are great as we stand now we have the capacity to be greater, to be a better people and therefore a better nation. You ask how can you be made better? Simply put, you can’t, but your offspring and their offspring and so on and so forth can be made better through the rapidly advancing science of genetics. The culmination of over 30 years of research and development in this area came in the beginning of this year and now we are ready to begin to make use of this valuable data.
Through painstaking research and a massive genotyping effort we have isolated and identified those traits which are most desirable in a Concordiat citizen, the ideal Wirrawayan. If we want to be a better nation we must strive to produce this citizen. I will now explain how we will go about doing this.
Shortly after this speech all citizens will be mailed a card, with the location of a clinic and time to report. At the clinic tests will be run on the DNA of citizens. Those who do not meet the requirements will be forbidden from reproducing be means of sterilization. Those who do meet the criteria may procreate as they wish. The aim here is the remove undesirable traits from the gene pool, to make us a stronger nation and a better people. The program will continue for many years until we have achieved our goal.
It is your patriotic duty to comply with this undertaking; those who resist will be viewed as traitors and dealt with as such. I hope you understand the importance of your voluntary participation and your duty to the Concordiat.”
The room was utterly silent, the throng still in shock from the Coordinators word. He took the opportunity and quickly left the podium. This movement seemed to break the spell and at once the room exploded in angry shouts yells. The reporters
In the hall outside the media room Achilles Brown, otherwise known as the Coordinator glanced at Arnold Von Gluck, his Army Chief of Staff and then spoke, “Arnie, everything is in place?” The General simply nodded his head.
Through the great glass window in the atrium below army units streamed into the streets readying for the coming violence, but such was the price of progress, no?
