Overview

Developed jointly by Takayama State Electronics and Soyuz Aeronautics, the TS-3 Griffon is intended to take over the roles performed by the MiG-31M and the MiG-25RB in the Republic Air Forces. The TS-3 adopts the revolutionary "double-delta" wing form first used on the Saab 210 and J-35 "Draken" aircraft, and mates this wing (which confers both high speed and high low-speed agility) to a modern engine system and a highly advanced electronics suite. The result is an aircraft which is amply superior to its excellent predecessors and will provide the Air Forces with a highly capable combat aircraft for the foreseeable future.

Max. range (Normal fuel load, unarmed): 2,220Km
Max. range (Full armament, normal fuel): 1,490Km
Max. ferry range: 2,800Km
Max. cruise range (Normal fuel and armament): 1,890Km

Powerplant

Thrust (Dry): 50,645kN
Thrust (Wet): 79,720kN

Armament

Cannon:One Soyuz/Brown 30mm automatic cannon in starboard 2nd wingroot, 250 rounds (normal mix 100 HE, 100 API, 50 AP)

Weapons bay: May accommodate up to four R-37B1 missiles, 2 FAB-500 bombs, 4 FAB-250 bombs, or 4 canisters of bomblets; can also carry WMDs including up to 100Kt nuclear warheads.

Pylons: Ten pylons including two semi-recessed beneath 1st wing area and two wingtip (can also mount ECM pods).

Electronics

Radar: One Takayama TK-12 phased-array electronically-scanned Look-Down-Shoot-Down radar in nose (main emitter) and tail (tail warning emitter). Optimum range 250mi against bombers size of B-52, 200 miles against fighters size of MiG-21. Anti-stealth capabilities include cycle/random mode, cycle variation capability, terrain reference computers and low-signature classification systems. Can be used for terrain-avoiding (but not terrain-following) guidance. Able to track 30 targets, engage 14 simultaneously.

LADAR: One TKL-2 LADAR in port outer wingroot, range 20Km under best conditions.

IRST: One S/TK-16 IRSR probe on starboard side of nose.

ECM: Soyuz Defender ECM module, covers bands from H to X, frequency-agile and microprocessor controlled. Additional ECM pods can be mounted on wingtip pylons.

Countermeasures: Chaff and flare launchers mounted below tail.

Communications: UHF directional and VHF radio, satellite uplink system and Markham-Takayama dedicated satellite/aircraft/ground datalink system.

Miscellaneous

Stealth features: Aircraft covered in layer of RAM where possible. Maintenance doors, landing gear doors and other fairings have serrated edges where possible. Baffles can be lowered into engine air intakes to low speeds to reduce radar signature.

Cockpit design: Full "glass" cockpit with analogue backups for major instruments.

Variants

TS-3S - Shipborne variant of basic TS-3. Undercarriage strengthened, arrester hook and catapult spool added in lower fuselage aft.

Sales

Both the TS-3 and the TS-3S have an export variant (these being the TS-3E and the TS-3SE respectively) retailing for $20,000,000 apiece. In this state they are supplied with electronics specified by the user nation.
