Automagfreek’s guide (http://forums2.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=367824) to story roles and angles is an excellent tool to describe the many permutations that NS alliances and rivalries take in roleplay. Since I’ve written posts about storefronts in the past, I wanted to add to it a little bit by applying some of the same terms to storefronts.
Rub: In AMF’s thread, a rub is when a popular player associates with a lesser-known player to increase the latter’s recognition in NationStates. I find that sometimes it also applies to storefronts. For instance, when the Portland Iron Works (http://forums2.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=345001) started out, it took about 27 hours before it received its first order. Just before that happened, Praetonia’s Imperial Praetonian Shipyards (http://forums2.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=332455) and PIW commissioned our Freedom-class superdreadnaught. Some time later, Granzi’s Hybalt Shipyards and PIW went live with the Calypso-class superdreadnaught he designed. In my opinion, PIW seemingly grew overnight in part because of the association with two already-established storefronts.
Push: In the thread, a “push” is when someone’s popularity increases as a result of a “job” (which is an intentional loss to increase someone’s stature). In the storefront business, I like to think of a “push” as being an attempt by an already-established storefront owner to help a newcomer get off the ground. This can be done by either working with the newcomer to design a ship (much like what Praetonia did) or by purchasing items from the newb’s storefront. As an example, I ICly used one of my puppets and purchased ships from Ranudon’s storefront even though PIW already had the ship I was buying to help him get off the ground. I’ve also purchased ships from other newcomers whose designs have been especially good.
I also have a theory that a respected RPer purchasing from a relative newcomer can help “push” or “rub” the newb’s storefront in a similar fashion. The better respected the player who buys from you, the more someone who is deciding whom to buy from is likely to say, “you know, if he buys ships from that guy, they must be good. I’d better place an order there.”
These are just a few theories from an NS diehard, I suppose…
