I'm currently running out of ideas for Marimaia; Burma and Malaysia are puppet states, Vietnam is an ally, relations with the Chinas are improving, and Marimaia's network of allies is pretty tight. As a result, I'm in a good position but it's difficult to RP in that situation because there's no real reason to do anything to endanger it.

So, I came up with something a little different. The NeoSuunists fall. Ethnic tensions exploding, successful invasion, economic collapse, I haven't decided yet. Anyway, the majority of the leadership are caught/killed/whatever, but Suun escapes with Tian and a few others. In Malaysia, Jamil panics at the fall of his patron and abdicates after an emboldened legislature tries arresting him for corruption. Jamil may publicly call Kalla a power-hungry opportunist, but that is because Jamil is trying to deflect attention from his growing fortune.

Jamil meets up with Suun, while Suun's old friends in the Kamisori Gumi and the Sky Dragon Triad help them reach South America, where they lay down new roots; it'll probably be either Argentina, Chile or Colombia. Using the vast fortune built up during his time in power, Suun becomes de facto ruler of their new home by bribing various government officials, military commanders, etc. He gets to like ruling from the shadows, and calls his old Asian syndicate friends to join him; eventually they join with Suun to create a new syndicate with him as its head.

This new syndicate would then either incorporate or go to war with the Colombian drug lords. Of course, with the Russian Mafia rearing its head, Suun's syndicate would end up either reaching an agreement with them or ending up in an international crime war.

Anyhoo, that's the basic idea. As a result of this change, the following countries would become free:

Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Burma, Malaysia

Vietnam would also be free of Marimaian influence. All I'd need for the new concept is one South American country.

So, what does everyone think? I'd like to get some feedback before I actually go through with it or not.

No objections here.

The potential for a crime war is interesting. It really depends on how you would handle the Columbian drug supply. If you cut it off, the Mafia is going to be none to pleased. And with the French funding a significant portion of them, they are going to be a force to be reckoned with. That would be interesting wouldn't it? A shadow war that is fought illegaly across the entire world...

AC, that's what I was thinking. Conventional war is all well and good, but a secret war between criminal organisations would be great fun to RP. Contract hits, merchandise interceptions, competition for political allies and the like would all be pieces of a much larger conflict that the nations of the world could try wading into if they wanted to.

With the restoration of Roman-style governance in Italy, the Italian Mafia would probably be either non-existent or would have transferred elsewhere; that means that they're probably not as entrenched in the areas where they are in RL, so there's quite a lot of opportunity for those who dare to try.

Interesting... accursed crime lords...

Excellent. WW4 is not going to come from the Lavragerian conflict or the Chinese struggles. It'll be a battle of drive-bys, poisoned pastrami, bribed officials, and drug smuggling! Now, all we need is for some country to re-institute the Prohibition.

[OOC: I may be assuming too much here, but I'm pretty sure that, under Kalla, Islamic Indonesia isnt particularly liberal in acceptance of alcohol. Not to mention most of AMW's Middle East...]

OCC: Hindustan will probably be difficult to get drugs out of, considering that all opium plantations are run by the government and very closely monitored. All in all, it probably would not be profitable to smuggle drugs out of Hindustan when Colombia and a wealth of other nations are probably covered in the stuff and a good deal more free when it comes to growing and selling.

Okay, I've located Suun's new home.

Peru.

The nation already has a fairly large Asian community, thus allowing the new arrivals to blend in quite well. It's also the second-largest RL producer of coca leaf, and apparently opium production is also starting to emerge, so the new syndicate will have access to 'merchandise'.

The only changes I'd have to make compared to RL Peru are a more corrupt government and a less successful economy; other than that, everything seems fine and dandy.

[ugh... looks like its time for Sujavan semi-secular Islamic socialism to try and beat Kalla's fundamentalism in influencing the Malay...]

OOC:... umm... well... Spyr, there won't be much of a race.

I've been trying to do this for the last month or so, ever since my university work piled up like Mount Everest on me.

I'm quitting NS shortly. I'm just trying to make a plausible excuse for Hudecia/Canada to go into an isolationist state.

Kalla will be handed over to Bonstock (should he want it).

There we go, it's done. A quick Soviet-style death for the NeoSuunist Prosperity Sphere of Marimaia in AMW. I didn't want it to last forever, so I thought it best to put it out of its misery. Besides, there have been quite a few shock regime ends in RL; I thought it was appropriate here.

[Question: Did the territories formerly held by Marimaia undergo their RL history as part of French Indochina?]

For the most part...everything happened as in RL until WWII.

The basic idea is that during WWII (or its AMW equivalent), Thailand was given authority over Laos and Cambodia by the Japanese, as Thailand was more cooperative with them in AMW than in RL. Eventually Thailand saw which way the wind was blowing and switched to the Allies.

After the war, the Thai government offered the Laotians and Cambodians an opportunity to become 'equal partners' in a federal-style entity rather than return to French colonial rule. With the backing of the Allied Powers, who preferred to see a free Asia rather than a colonial one, Marimaia was born. The new federal democracy proved rather inept, culminating in a total mismanagement of a famine which resulted in the Stalinist opposition, known as the Suunist Party, declaring the government's illegitimacy and starting a civil war.

The Suunists managed to hold the country together after winning, but only through harsh totalitarianism. When Premier Mikada Suun died (officially from pneumonia, unofficially from Tian killing him after he slapped Chiisu once too often), his son Chiisu Suun came to power and began relaxing everything. Chiisu then created NeoSuunism, and the rest I think everyone knows.

That's the story I always had in mind anyway. Exactly who the Allies and Axis were in AMW's WWII wasn't an issue back then.

[OOC: Indeed. I was just wondering about how relations with France would be affected with the collapse, as if I'm not mistaken His Most Christian Majesty was relying on Marimaian trade to replace the loss of more traditional economic partners.

France was never the nicest of the colonial powers, and I was wondering if, during an economic downturn, images of the Tiger King getting chummy with Louis might not have revived old ethnic resentment against France, and further against the NeoSuunists for the association.]
